      I'm wondering why Ray used the engine cleaner on a unit that only had 30 grand on the odometer...do you know why? What caused the valve cover gasket to fail? Im thinking maintenance was an issue on this Civic. The engine getting really hot will cause the gasket to fail...not changing the oil will do it.

      @deplorablelibertarian The valve cover gasket leaking is a really common leak on those engines. It's not maintenance related. I've had them in before with like 10k km / 6k miles with leaks starting to develop. Heat could be a possibility I suppose, they do run a bit on the hotter side. Personally, though, I think it's because of insufficient clamping force since the torque spec is something like 60 inch-pounds 💁‍♂️

    10:10 You know what else is crazy? This is pretty common with those exact engines from Honda. If the issue is not addressed, it ends up burning the starter solenoid out. Replacing a starter is kind of a pain in the ass and have to pull it out the passenger side wheel well. After finding oil all over the back side like you did, cleaned it up and tightened the valve cover bolts because a couple seemed pretty loose for my expectations. Never had that problem again after words. That gasket is not entirely flat, there are corners and bends etc. these covers leak easily if the bolts are not torqued to spec or 1nm harder.

    The two options for transmissions for that car in 2019 were 6 spd manual or CVT. Looks like this one has the CVT. That transmission needs to be serviced every 30K to decrease the chance of early (before 100K) failure. Funny coincidence, the amount it saves you in fuel costs over 100K miles (about $5K) is exactly what it will cost to replace when it fails. Factory rebuild is only option. Thanks Honda.

      As far as I’m concerned, I know motor flush helps with that, but if you’re running additives and such, they will need to be added again with the fresh oil change. Motor flushes usually quickly reveal failing gaskets and seals, especially if they were only partially sealed or “fixed”.

    Ray, It is not white balance. It is the exposure setting. You can force it to one setting if you choose but only do that if the lighting doesn't change. A light meter available as an app can help determine correct ISO and f stop. You probably can help your camera out by limiting the ISO range and f stop. Always aim for under exposure as this can be fixed in post. An over exposed image is not recoverable(The super bright areas)
    The white balance as you keep referring to has only to do with the warmness of the picture. Aka a blue or orange tint. A light meter can determine this setting and is usually best to set this to one value. And fix it in post if it is off.
    If you limit your new camera to only the shop and keep the go pro for the driving scenes would work best has action cameras excel at dynamic lighting conditions where a prosumer product is best left to static conditions that you can control.

      An underexposed image can be unrecoverable, too, especially if you have a lot of shadows. Instead of a bunch of pixels being at a 255 brightness level, you've got a bunch of pixels at a 0 brightness level. Either way, you can't resolve detail. But I would also recommend manually setting everything including focus, especially when the camera is up close. I shoot some of my hobby stuff, and when my hands come into frame my phone tends to change focus. It thinks it should have my hands in focus not the piece. Having the camera do auto anything can be annoying in the final product.

    • @Ryan-wb1zu
      @Ryan-wb1zu Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@major__kong Generally everything has enough light for the sensor to pick up unless you're shooting at night. The problem with dark areas / using a high ISO with a fast shutter speed to compensate for poor lighting is noise. You can see this pretty well in cheap cameras and action cameras. They don't have the exposure range of a prosumer product. Over exposure on the other hand is the sensor physically not being able to process any detail which makes it unrecoverable. One detail most consumers overlook is the exposure range of the camera sensor. It is usually listed in the tech specs in number of stops.
      You are correct tho because of the physical limitations of sensor technology. The cameraman needs to determine what exposure setting best suits the scene as post can only fix so much. Auto usually does get you close enough for you to fix but the camera Ray is using seems to be behind the 8 ball. Maybe a firmware update for the camera might fix it. Or there is an exposure reaction speed adjustment/sensitivity setting that can be tweaked.

    Noticing some frame droppage on the new camera compared to the GoPro, and there could be 2 factors affecting it:
    1) auto settings. Instead of just capturing images, it's also automatically adjusting white balance, ISO, focus, exposure, etc., all based on stimuli. Or
    2) not lit enough/exposure too long.
    All in all (I haven't watched the other videos featuring the new camera), the footage isn't bad, and there's DEFINITELY a noticeable heightened ceiling in production quality. Seeing individual grains of dirt on bolts and being able to zoom in close to what you're working on in high def when there was typically only the wide angle available to you and cropping in after is a huge upgrade! Hey Ray! Do you ever get any feedback on how things worked, ex FJ Toyota sludge and if it corrected its issues, and any other for that matter? Be great to get some of those difficult repairs feedback…just a suggestion. Thanks man!

    Surprised you don't have an xacto set for gasket scraping. With the interchangeable heads for getting into tight spaces, that makes it so much easier than a bare razor blade. Plus, they're super easy to resharpen quickly on a flat stone(have the same set since the late '70s!)

      I use the disposable Harbor Freight razors that are about four inches long with break off blades. $.60 each and they last a long time. Extend the blade for a nice long and flexible razor blade. Clears flat surfaces very well.

    This video came out exactly at the right time! I was checking over my daughter’s 2018 LX Honda CRV, with the exact same engine as this Civic, 2.4L, i-VTEC. I also noticed upon inspection, that there was minor oil seeping and leaking around the valve cover gasket, just like the Civic that you worked on, weird right? Since I am visiting my daughter, who lives in Oahu, Hawaii, and I live in Japan, I don’t have any access to my tools which are in Japan. Bottom line, because the Honda type valve cover gasket, from the dealer, is better quality than after market gaskets, I will have a local Honda dealer/mechanic replace the gasket. Good news though, I purchased an extended maintenance warranty when I purchased this used CRV. What’s even weirder, my daughter’s 2018 Honda LX CRV, only has 50,000 miles on it, just like the low 30,000 miles on the Civic you worked on. Must be an engineering flaw in either the type of gasket material used or the size of the gasket-weird right? This type of extended warranty, covers (except a minimal $100.00 deductible) the valve cover gasket replacement and labor charge, so kind of inexpensive. Just thought that both the Civic and the CRV, both with low miles, both need a valve cover gasket, is somehow kind of unusual! Great video, keep them coming. I personally like your new camera, will just take some time to work all the kinks out.

      You could have low miles, but I've seen people with these cars idle for the longest. That's bad for the car. Your basically cooking the engine and gaskets with heat. You need to drive let the air flow through front grill. It happen to my old civic 2003.

    Wow. They used way too much Hondabond, and it obviously didn't help to use that much (it still leaked). I've found that the easiest way to remove it is with your fingers, and rubbing with a towel. Yes, you did good to use the oem gasket. You, and Eric O. are my favorite techs to watch.

      Very well could have leaked due to improper torque to each of the bolts also....as this is not a normal problem..

    • @deplorablelibertarian
      @deplorablelibertarian Před 6 měsíci

      @@djsi38t...so the valve cover gasket failing was because of manufacturing, and not because the vehicle wasn't properly maintained? Not changing the oil can cause excess heat in the engine, and that will cause the gasket failures. He used the engine cleaner on an engine with only 30 grand on the odometer. Maintenance issues?
