    I appreciate the ethical analysis of why you’re declining service on this vehicle.
    There’s a point in any vehicle’s life where the cost of keeping it going vastly exceeds the resources that its owner has, and the “value” of the vehicle. That one looks like it’s reaching that point. Not only are there DTCs indicating moderately expensive repairs, but the scope of the oil leaks suggests that it would take a “gasket-and-seals” job to clean up the engine (and if you’re doing the transmission replacement, you might as well replace the rear main seal on the engine, since you’re already in there), and then there’s the suspension work it needs.
    At a guess, I’d wager that the owner can buy a whole new set of problems (er … vehicle) for that money.
    Sorry to hear about there being family drama in your life. It’s not fun to have to deal with that stuff, and yeah, it’s painful as well.

      I remember working for UPS and finding out that they have a hard math for when to stop repairing their fleet of vehicles.
      Something to do with the annual cost of repairs versus the current value of the vehicle.

    • @michelleshaw337
      @michelleshaw337 Před 7 měsíci +12

      @@MonkeyJedi99 in a fleet environment like UPS, that's a very reasonable approach to things - basically you amortize the cost of the vehicle over time, which provides a fairly concrete sense of it's "value today", and then when you are evaluating repairs, it's a matter of a ratio between the cost of repair and the book value of the vehicle.
      When we are talking about personal vehicles, it's a bit of a different calculation because personal factors ranging from emotional attachment to the vehicle to the "market value" can come into play.
      Car Wizard (another channel) has a late 80s Ford F150 that the owner is sinking some $4K or more into repairs simply because while it's more than the truck is "worth", there aren't any options out there right now that get a similar vehicle for that money - so it's "worth it" to repair the 80s truck even though it's only in mediocre shape.

      Not long ago that was true. But not any more. Acceptable new cars are no longer available at any price. They are super expensive, extremely poor quality, and they have all that self driving trash technology. You couldn't give me one. They are not safe to drive. I would rather spend $20,000 completely rebuilding an older vehicle than spending $50,000 on a new piece of trash. I was a government fleet mechanic for41 years. I quickly noticed that there was one vehicle that was way more reliable than anything else in the fleet. That was the 4.6L 2V Ford Crown Vic. I have been driving them for the past 30 years. They used to be everywhere, but many of them have been trashed. Finding decent ones is hard to do. I have a 2006 and 2007 Grand Marquis. The '06 has 381,000 miles, the 07 only has 36,000 miles. They are both worth new engines and transmissions when they wear out. So many of them were made that 4.6L 2V engines and AOD transmissions practically grow on trees. I plan on driving these cars for the rest of my life. As new vehicles get more expensive and continue to become more computer than car, the value of used vehicles and parts will continue to go up. New vehicles are simply no longer an option for a great many people, and likely never will be again.

    • @michelleshaw337
      @michelleshaw337 Před 7 měsíci

      Every generation has a “favourite” vehicle, and that’s often the car that’s nearly 20 years old (Panther platform is far older than that, having come out in 1979). Often, their proponents will point to how much simpler they are compared to modern vehicles, they’re easier to repair, etc. All of which is valid for some people. I imagine as a former technician, you probably feel more comfortable doing repairs yourself, or having someone do them for you - as long as they can explain what they’re doing to you.
      A lot of people simply aren’t inclined that way. I know enough to understand the gist of what my mechanic tells me, but frankly for most of what my cars need, I rely on the skills of others - I have to. If my mechanic comes to me and says “yeah - your car needs a boatload of work and it’s going to cost way more than the car is worth”, it’s time to replace it. That typically means I replace my cars somewhere around 10-12 years old. I currently have a 2015 Honda CRV - I’ll probably drive it another 4-5 years before it starts needing major repairs. I’ll decide then whether or not I put the money into it, or replace it. (So far, it’s been robust and reliable - is it “lower quality” than previous Hondas? Not to me)

    I appreciate a mechanic with integrity. Given that some mechanics will sell their customers on unneeded repairs, this car would be a gold mine, given all the needed repairs this has. They wouldn't care that the repair bill would exceed the value of the car. Glad to see you are putting your customer first. By the way, it is nice to see that you seem to be rather busy. I guess people are pleased with the quality of your work.

    I agree there is an awful lot wrong with the van. That being said, the prices of good used vehicles are still very high. The owner will need to see if it is cheaper to repair, using good parts, or to get a replacement. Years ago replacing a worn out vehicle with a newer one was a no-brainer but not now. I wish the owner luck with what he decides.

    My ex boss had a 2013 WITH A 6 CYL. She bought it new and ran the living crap out of it.(TAXI SERVICE) When she took it out of service it had the jittery-toyota-transmission-syndrome. But she decided to "junk" it because it needed 2 new Catalytic converters to the tune of about $5k. She didn't think it was worth it, and she sold it to an employee for $300. It had 350,000 miles on it. He took it, had the cats done, gave it a tune up, and sold it for.. Get this... $11,000!!!!!! No joke. The Toyota mini vans, even super high mileage and broken sliding door motors and cables, are GOLD.

A few years ago the ratchet broke internally, I didn't want to throw it away so I bought one on Ebay and swapped out the internals. I still use it often, despite having many other ratchets, mostly S-K at my disposal. Channel is always trying to clean up negative impacts to it’s fan base and since it’s a family show of sorts (Ray’s children are occasionally seen and heard), I know Ray and family (including myself) would appreciate less vulgarity and more restraint shown from those who demonstrate that their brains are contained in a damp, dark body orifice!

      @@nashvillecop1well some fucking times you just look to vet on social media. And this guy seems pretty fucking decent to me. Oh well, I guess some assholes can't handle the fact that some of us woke up in world of planned obsolescence, and deal with that fucking headache every day of our lives, due to the planned fuckery forced upon us. I was born in the late 90's and I don't even want to own a car from the 90's due to complexity. I want a 60's vehicle. Easy to work on and cheap parts. Not even a possibility on new or any late model transportation.

    I have a same model since new. Trans is very sensitive to low fluid level. Half a quart low and it will slip. Same valve cover leaks. But not as bad. Was well maintained. Some gasket conditioner helps a lot with leaks. Issue I had with similar drive issues was bad cv axel assembly. No clicks or typical symptoms but replacement solved similar odd drive issues

    I really appreciate your candidness when you mention that you recently had a cathartic moment. Whether that was a determining factor to declining service or not on the Sienna I don't know. But I do get it when you explain that with it being 17 years old spending at least a couple of thousand dollars on a transmission (whether used or rebuilt) and having additional issues with the steering makes it debatable for restoration. I think you're making a good call for a recommendation to the owner. Thanks for the video.

    I’m thinking seeing how many miles are on the car that maybe the transmission was never really serviced and just recently got serviced seeing that the fluid looks clean and new and now the transmission is having issues shifting. The old dirty fluid is probably what was keeping the transmission going.

He was trying to prove to everyone what a good deal it was and the gearshift fell off in his hand, this was the first day he bought it, lol. Her family have been the worst with us, telling her she needs to leave me, but she has stood strong through it all and she has stood beside me no matter what they say, im so proud of her for her belief in me. Take solace in ur immediate family, your kids and your wife are of the most importance. Family is family, but your kids and your wife should be your sole focus.

    with cars being so much $$$ a rebuilt trans at $2500 to $3000 might be the way..
    My 08 Ford escape v6 is on its 3rd trans first was Warranty as it blew up within a month of me buying it.
    Sec was $2,1000 with new CV shafts
    Then the 2/4 gear band broke, and that was covered so far running good

    A customer should appreciate your advice on cost versus value on a vehicle like this. As you outlined in the video of the options for a used good versus a cheap one and and a remanufactured or new transmission. Then also the other items on the vehicle that would need addressing. Whatever is going on with the suspension is also another item that could be very expensive. I really like your narrations on your videos, both the during repair and explanations of repair options/costs. Thanks for being the tech you are. A bright shining light in the sometimes dim arena of car repair.

    I've changed a couple of Transmissions' fluid by pumping it out through the cooling connections by running the engine then replacing what came out and repeat until I see clean fluid coming out and quickly shut down the engine. This gets the old dirty fluid out of the torque converter and leaves only good stuff in there.
