      I had a subframe swapped on a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica in 2019, I think the guy under charged on the job, whole thing was like 1300canadian. Was a father son shop. The son looked like that pos Chrysler caused the job to be not so straight forward, but paid the with a small stack of hundreds, then got about 2 years out of that car, then the timing belt went.
      Never again will I get a post purchase inspection, or a Chrysler product

      2010 Prius is selling for $5000 - $6000 . I have an 09 with 171,000 . The only things that has been replaced is a thermostat ,muffler and accessory battery(twice) They last about eight years . The brakes
      otors have been done twice. They last about 65,000 miles. It still has original struts\shocks that are still good but I plan on replacing them before they start leaking . The frame is solid . It has no rattles or clunks . I was getting 51 MPG until I put new tires on it, It dropped about 6 MPG. They are worth putting the money into them. I life a bit east or Erik and they put salt down if it might snow . One year I had a salt speed bump in front of my house

    PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE stop apologizing for using your torch, torqueing by experience, using crimp and seal connectors, welding stuff together, or any of the other methods you use. You are easily the best mechanic on CZcams. I've tried every other channel and none of them come close. Half of your repairs are fixing some other "mechanic's" mistakes or using your knowledge and experience to solve problems they couldn't. The vast majority of us are tuning in to watch you work, here your schtick, see a small part of your relationship with Mrs. O, and listen to you grouse about the lawnmower man and Dorman parts. We're here for the story, the camaraderie, the ups and downs. If ANY viewer thinks they're helping or contributing by criticizing your work, methods, relationships, etc. OR calling your shop?! WTF, they are completely missing the point. Most of us accept the terms of the deal, you make videos to share your knowledge and supplement your income and we get to watch and enjoy because you're a good mechanic, a decent human being, and good at making videos. You have absolutely nothing to explain or apologize for. I hope you keep making videos!

      I don't think he's going to stop making videos. And your comment sounds just like the ones I used to write back in the day.... Just about as long also! Lol. Eric is the best mechanic on y tube without a doubt, hands down, no exceptions. But you know I've noticed something. He's much happier when he's on the search for the green crusties or finding things that other shops couldn't. When he has to deal with Cold rusted, Northern steel, the Mr Hyde comes out of Dr Jekyll and he loses his patience, Rather quickly sometimes. Eric... You decide if you owe Mrs O a dinner and a movie night, because she didn't actually ruin the video like you told her she did. We see here as a nice humble lady, even though like most husbands say..... You don't have to live with her... Or boy does she got you fooled...... But all meant in Innocent Loving spousal commarodery of course. So be careful because you don't want to make Mrs O feel feel awkward about coming out during a video because after all..... She is the other half of South Point Auto! Even though she won't let up and give in on the icecream machine. Also yes you get millions of comments and many say your doing it wrong or I do it this way and you make that more than obvious to them when your ripping apart the northern rusties! What can I say.... We all have preferences on what we do and don't always get to choose our favs but that's life and we just have to work through what we get. If we always got to have our favorites then we would want cake with it and want to eat it too. Maybe that's the real reason she won't allow you to get an icecream machine.! Come on Eric.... First an ice cream machine then comes a cake machine. Easy Dr Jekyll! Lol I hope you took this comment in fun because it was factual but meant no harm. So take care for now... Your long time viewer J Poll!

    I dont blame anyone for keeping an older car on the road. Both of mine are 20 plus yrs old. In 2019, i had a head gasket blow (Durango 4.7 174k at the time) and i was about to have roughly $3000 worh of work done to keep it going for about 10 years and the difference in original repairs, new head gaskets and replacing the engine was $1500 so i had a Summit Racing OEM reman engine put in. 20k miles later and all is good. Down south our frams dont rust like this. You can read all the labels and still see the grease pen marks from the assembly line, upc codes too. I love not being tied to a monthly payment on depreciating planned obsolescence.

    I like how they put all those holes in the frame for “drainage” but just end up creating a spot for the rust to start. A little spray foam in the voids helps seal it from holding moisture and salt. Cars are not made for northern states that use salt on the roads.

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 Před 27 dny +1

      Paint tends to be thin at the edges of stuff. I think most of the holes are more for weight and saving cost on metal rather than for drainage.

    Fun to see you work on "my" car - same year, color, wheels. A lot less rust, though. Central Indiana uses salt, too, but I sprayed a can of CRC SP-400 Corrosion Inhibitor (aka cosmoline) on my subframe, just like the can I sent you a few years ago, and I've got zero rust. Nada. Fluid Film works too of course, but it's messy and has to reapplied every year. Cosmoline doesn't wash off and lasts several years, if not "forever". You didn't say how many miles on the Prius. I'm on my original battery, but only 100k, and fingers crossed it will give me a few more years.

    • @johndorrell1
      @johndorrell1 Před 29 dny +2

      @@efil4kizum Yup. The Navy has used it for many decades. It dries to a translucent amber color, or it's available in black. A cheaper version is Crown Corrosion Suppressant 101, or "6013" which is also on the can. I bought a case of 12 10.5 oz. cans. A cheap spray nozzle and hose can be found on Amazon that fits some spray cans. I use that to get into holes in the subframe. It could also be used to access inside doors, body panels, etc. A light spritz on wheel hubs and inside wheels prevents corrosion and ensures they'll always come off easily. I use it like I would Fluid Film, except for me it's "one and done". It can be reapplied, but I haven't found that to be necessary.

    They are cotter pins. 5:30 Here is why. In 1970 I worked as an inspector on the Final Assembly Line at the General Motors Oldsmobile factory. Attached to each car was a paper inspection card with a long list of items to be inspected. Each inspector had a uniquely shaped paper-punch. As I inspected the line-items I was responsible for I used my paper-punch to make a hole next to each if it was good. Some of the items I inspected were the "left upper A-frame front cotter pin", "left upper A-frame rear cotter pin", "left lower A-frame front cotter pin", "left lower A-frame rear cotter pin", and "left front axle nut cotter pin." I then passed the inspection card across the car to the right side inspector who inspected the "right upper A-frame front cotter pin", "right upper A-frame rear cotter pin", "right lower A-frame front cotter pin", "right lower A-frame rear cotter pin", and "right front axle nut cotter pin." TEN COTTER PINS, not one "split pin." The card also had line item for "trunk lid fitment" and "hood safety latch", not "boot" not "bonnet". So stop with the "correction" about those being "split pins". They are cotter pins in the United States of America, and have been to my _certain_ knowledge for at least 54 years.

    Starting from the left is so the input shaft does not get stressed, the other side is still free to move as the subframe compresses, and then your second one is aligned. Makes it so the shaft goes in correctly and not twisted. RHD versions exact opposite.
    Yes that whole underbody does need a nice corrosion treatment, really should have been painted correctly and undercoated from the beginning, as all the rust around gaps attests. But an annual recoat will help wonders, keeping it looking like it is for a long time now.
