  • Unfortunately, I couldn't find any statistics on how long it takes a baby to drown. I'm sure I'm on a list now though, cause I certainly tried.

    The thing about babies being born with an inherent sense of right and wrong is so amazing to me, and it's also really tragic because most of the time when people lack empathy it wasn't because they were born that way, but because their environment killed the empathy inside of them :(

    • @MM-jf1me
      @MM-jf1me Před rokem +16

      Or maybe the people who lacked empathy were the babies who chose the "mean" toy? There's also a nonzero likelihood that some babies chose a toy arbitrarily or based on some other factor. Anyway, the point is that you can't look at this one example and conclude that all babies initially had empathy and some had their empathy destroyed by their environments. That's an idea worth exploring, but more research would need to be done to reach that conclusion.

    • @IanZWhite00
      @IanZWhite00 Před rokem +15

      @@MM-jf1me “There’s also a nonzero likelihood that some babies chose a toy arbitrarily or based on some other factor”
      This is actual, genuine scientific illiteracy here. Babies choosing toys arbitrarily or for reasons outside the study is literally the reason you have a control group and large sample size when you want to test for any scenario. No, they are never guaranteed, but they don’t need to be when you can quantify the room for error and include that in your assessment.

    • @MM-jf1me
      @MM-jf1me Před rokem +9

      @@IanZWhite00 The video showed differently colored toys. Looking back on it, this was probably to underline the idea visually of one toy being "good" and another being "bad" but if this were also done in the actual study to help the babies differentiate between the toy displaying kindness and the toy displaying meanness then that is a flaw in the study. The reason studies are peer reviewed is so others can check the methods used (and find any flaws, like if the researcher were to accidentally include variables outside those being tested) and so others can perform the same tests and either substantiate the author's conclusion or point out their own findings and where more research is needed. Not taking claims on faith and critical thinking are part of the scientific process.

Even the most amoral asshole would probably prefer to keep people around him who are nice to him. Imagine youre a mother and your baby reaches up, grabs your arm with the might of thor gripping his hammer, looks you in the eye and says:
    There's a school of thought today that rejects patriotism. People are made nervous by that intense allegiance to a country. They think it can only lead to war and bloodshed and that fights can be avoided if we all just compromise and get along. And, of course, compromise and getting along are great things as long as you're not sacrificing essential values. But I believe there's a line in the sand, some things that you have to be willing to stand up for, even if it means trouble. Charlie's patriotism is not blind, flag-waving jingoism: it's an intense allegiance to the American concept of liberty.
    And then proceeds to shit on you.
    Fucking wild man.

Their eyebrows are clearer, their nose bridge is not very accentuated, their lips are plumper, their checks are rounder and squishier, the general jawline form is softer...
