It’s less of those moms not being angels, and more of FASD being easier to cause. Recent research has shown that it can occur simply by drink during the time period that someone didn’t even know they were pregnant. That’s also why the percentage he gave seems so high, because recent studies have found that it’s much more common than originally thought. It’s also why it’s considered a spectrum disorder because the severity ranges so much.

Which is just more proof to me that alcohol isn't really that great for anyone. Backs up the results by the Lancet study, a multi decade long conclusion that no amount of alcohol is good for you, relative to heavy, ight and non-drinkers. It should be treated like junk food and respected for what it is, a neurotoxin. Society takes alcohol way too lightly. Not say they can't have it, just saying that the amount considered "responsible" is way too high.

@@vixxcelacea2778 that's very true. I love booze but it's an awful drug, with both chronic and acute toxic effects and the risks should be respected more and taken more seriously within wider culture. Its probably one of the most destructive widely used drugs, in no small part due to how socially acceptable it is. It's so much fun, but that's what makes it so insidious
But the first few weeks and months of pregnancy are vital to development and even seemingly insignificant things can cause big problems. For example, folic acid is extremely important for the formation of DNA within the first few weeks of development. If an adult woman is deficient in folic acid for a few weeks or months she might not even notice, but if she happens to get pregnant while deficient in folic acid during those critical weeks, likely before she even knows unless she was trying to conceive, it can have a devastating effect on the fetus. There's many other seemingly innocuous or low to mid risk things that can have severe effects if the fetus is exposed to it during a certain time frame, again often before one would be aware of an unplanned pregnancy (but of course not always), or have a far worse affect the earlier in the pregnancy the exposure was
I know this thanks to a doctor DRILLING into me how important folic acid supplements were for me while taking a medication that can cause folic acid deficiency despite my repeated reassurance I do not want children any time soon 😑 he almost seemed more concerned about that than anything else... totally not salty lol

Aberrant obturator arteries are another favorite of mine. It's basically where one of the arteries in your pelvis branches off of a place it doesn't normally branch off of. Doesn't cause any issues and you'd never know you had one unless you had surgery on the area. A couple of the cadavers in my anatomy lab back in med school had them so it ended up being a bonus question on our practical exam.
Situs inversus is also a fun one. I took care of an 8 year old boy that had it once. The first time his mom brought him to the doctor, they took a chest x-ray and everything was backwards, so the x-ray tech assumed she had made some kind of error and just went into the x-ray software and flipped the image horizontally to correct the "error". This may sound stupid, but it isn't when you consider that the statistical likelihood of making an error like that is actually much higher than the likelihood of having a patient with situs inversus. So the kid walked out of the doctor's office still without ever having any idea that all his organs were backwards, lol.

Fun addition to this list! A Bifid nose. It's reasonably common but it affects so little of someone's day to day life that most people don't ever notice. It's where the cartilage in the nose isn't fused together, and is instead split down the middle. This can create a vertical dent in the ball of someone's nose, but in my case it's so mild that you only notice if you press a finger to my nose and feel the two halves bend separately.

I had Bell Clapper Deformity. I found out when i had a massive testicular tortion when i was 18 or 19. They managed to twist it back in its original position by hand (just in the nick of time), but they wanted to perform minor surgery to make sure there wasn't any minor tortion still in place. They found out that the bindings between the nuts and the sack were absent, and they had to manually stitch them together to prevent me from suffering future tortions.
Also, someone who has never suffered one can not comprehend how much it hurts. I would describe it as getting kicked in the nards by a muscular army guy, at full power, with steel boots, every time your heart beats. It's a pain you need to experience to understand, but i wouldn't wish it upon any man.

I sadly have the third one and yes, i lost my left testicle at age 16, I woke up one day in agony not knowing why so we ofc went to a hospital, the doctors looked at my testicle which was very clearly rotated 180 degrees and said "that's not normal" gave me anti-biotics and said it'd be fine, a week later......everything was not fine, the pain got worse and there was even more swelling so we went back, after a quick MRI scan they informed me that if the scan was done immediately (which is was supposed to have been) there would have been a chance of recovering it, but sadly there was no chance of my left testicle being saved so i woke up an hour later feeling an odd lopsided-ness. (as a side note they have attached my remaining testicle securely so that this wont happen again)
Please if you ever feel lasting pain/discomfort in your body, consider getting it scanned just in case, last thing you want is to walk out with part of your body missing a week later.

I know an even rarer deformity but it's actually a syndrome. About six months ago I was diagnosed with this thing called KSS that started because I had a foot that was completely numb and painful after a back surgery. The obvious idea was that somehow the back surgery had touched a nerve or something that had damaged the situation in my foot. I ended up having two biopsies and turns out I had a genetic syndrome that's known as a mitochondrial myopathy where my brain is deleting its mtdna. This is really funny stuff. So within a couple years I'm going to go blind, have to have a pacemaker put in, lose my hearing and have my muscles deplete to the point where I am pretty much helpless. Lol😊. The strongest odds are that I'll have a cardio block and be forced to leave this planet earlier than I had arranged for. Early check out kind of thing.😅. I forgot about the rareness of it. It's either 10 people or 100 people in a million. Because of that not much has been done to try to find a cure so all they can do is try to fix each symptom as it shows up. Normally that's a pacemaker and an eye surgery in the first year or so. It's a fun time for all! By the way I'm wearing a cardiac monitor at this very moment. 😁

I'm a teacher. I have one child in my class that clearly has FAS. I went to my principal about this... Because I discovered that my student's siblings (all 4 of them) ALSO have FAS, meaning their mother has drank enough during each of her pregnancies to cause FAS to be present in all of her children. I went to my principal about possibly hotlining, but apparently we can't do anything. All of these poor kids have learning difficulties. The younger brother is pretty low developmentally. Needless to say, I was and still am pretty upset over it.
Edit: To those saying the report should have been made to DFS regardless, it already was done some time prior to me being hired there. That's why nothing could be done- there was an investigation that already took place for the reason stated above and the children were found to be in a loving home with no abuse/neglect. It's frustrating, I know, that their actual conception/development in utero was not monitored better, but the kids are cared for with mom after birth, so there's no reason for them to be removed from the home. Mom's done having kids now, too, so I'm sure DFS made it a none-issue to focus on other, more intense cases. This one is certainly not the worst I've seen during my, now, 4 years...

Can't say that I have any, aside from the fact that I'm flat footed and need orthotics in my shoes. Not that rare I'm sure but I can barely walk without them, a problem that my mam, who is also flat footed, doesn't have. When we went on holidays once, I brought the wrong shoes, which didn't have my orthotics. After only a day of walking around, I had huge cuts and blisters down the sides of my whole feet because of how they were rubbing against the inside of my shoe, plus, my ankles were in pieces. Luckily, my brother was arriving the next day and he brought them with him. Two years later and I still have huge, thick calluses down the whole sides of my feet.

I was born with two teeth and proceeded to have too many teeth up to my current age. One particular tooth location had to have its tooth removed like two or three times before it finally realised I wasn't a shark and therefore should have that many extra teeth. My teeth were the trick question for dentists-in-training. I wish I was kidding. The extra tooth still on my lower jaw is really well hidden, so they had to count my teeth to realise I had one too many to be normal.
