I once saw a film about a prestigious dog show which was won by a shih-tzu (a tiny thing that looked very much like a mop). Immediately afterwards, the owner placed the dog on a huge block of ice and explained this was necessary because the dog was prone to overheating after exertion - the"exertion" in this case being strolling around the hall a few times before the judges. And this poor, basically unviable creature was awarded the main prize, setting an example for other breeders to follow.

There is actualy a reason for the Dachshunds shape:
It was suposed to crawl into rabbitholes and make the Baggers run out,
so that the hunter can kill them.
They’re actually German, their name means “badger dog”. Including rabbits, they were meant to climb into all sorts of places but mainly badger burrows. I have one, so I speak for all dachshund owners when I say they like to burrow in blankets.

Yeah this kinda seemed poorly researched. Some of the origins of the breeds had "reasons" outside of just looking appealing.
Tbh dogs aren't the only organisms that have been bred to incredibly unnatural standards. Corn, strawberries, apples, avocados, wheat, etc etc. Are all so different from their native ancestors. Our modern day forms are much bigger, have a higher sugar content, and tend to produce fleshier fruits.
Is it unnatural? Yes. Would they survive in nature? Most wouldn't or they'd began to adapt and change. Is it good? Not always. Some of these organisms will have a lower quality of life. But is it bad? Not always. Some of these species are more drought or disease tolerant.
Selective breeding isn't always a bad thing but it isnt inherently great either.
There's also a reason behind their big floppy ears, like all other big floppy-eared hounds (bloodhounds, basset hounds, beagles). Having bigger ears that hang down to their snout improves their focus and sense of smell to anything they're meant to track down.

I had one. She was a sweetheart, but was abused in a puppy mill and was terrified of men. It took me a year to get her to fully trust me, and from then on, we were inseparable.
The only person she ever attacked was a guy in cowboy boots messing with her. The poor dear broke her teeth on that tough leather, so the vet had to pull them all out.
For the rest of her life, her tongue hung out her mouth giving her this "hurr" look like Stimpy.
The only chihuahua I've ever properly encountered was a sweetheart. She wagged her tail and behaved like any other good dog. So, I believe you. Seeing people trashing the whole breed for their owners' faults sure makes me feel awful.
I remember when I was with a friend for a couple days and they had 3 dogs, one of which was a chihuahua. His name was Peanut, because he was the color of peanut butter. Peanut was abused by his previous owners, and was extremely shy because of this. Peanut was a very sweet guy, he just had a rough life.
Chihuahua's are usually only aggressive because they are constantly babied. Literally walking man children constantly afraid of anything bigger then them or that they don't know. But give them half an hour they'll relax.

I’ve never actually seen a chihuahua like the one he described. All of them I’ve seen are very well behaved and love to play. The one I know best though look like an arctic fox which is pretty cool looking and it’s extremely shy when it’s not in a playful mood.

Dachsunds were actually bred as rat hunting dogs, those short legs are so they can fit into very tight spaces, and their tail was bred to be strong enough that the owner could grab it and pull the dog out if it ever got stuck
Sort of, if you look at historical pictures they have short legs, but still long enough to be functional. Now that they're never used for their original purpose and are just pets laying around the house all day, they dialed the short leg thing all the way up to a ridiculous and unhealthy level.
They weren´t exactly "rat dogs", like some terriers, but dogs used for hunting animals in their dens. Their short legs and long body were useful in digging into fox burrow, for example. Of course, the OG dashunds had longer legs than those we see today.
Actually, no. They were created to hunt badgers in their burrows. Dachshund is German for "Badger Dog". The short legs are the same as they were historically, but modern Dachshunds have a much longer (and more fragile) back than their predecessors.
The irony is that both the dachshund and the chihuahua are examples of dogs that were bred for functionality. Dachshunds were bred for hunting animals that lived in tunnels (I forget which animal specifically) and chihuahuas were bred to be _living hot water bottles._
Of course, they're so neurotic that I can't imagine them actually working out well that way, but there was an attempt.

Dachshunds looked *very* different when they actually hunted badgers. Look up some historical photos. Now that they no longer do anything useful, the legs have got shorter, the backs longer, and the heads narrower and weaker.
Similarly, the land race breed that eventually became chihuahuas looked very different - they were much larger, had deer shaped heads (not the ridiculous "apple head" they now have) and longer snouts
@@giftofthewild6665 Yes, many working breed dogs that transformed into companion dogs have been bred to have their unique features exaggerated. My point was that those unique features were not created at random. Working dachshunds did still have stubby legs and long bodies. It's just that their legs were not _as_ stubby and their bodies not _as_ long.
To be clear, I'm not a fan of the direction that former working breeds have gone. Breed standards put forth by the AKC in particular are a disaster. I think they should maintain the working dog standards that they had and the focus should not be on exaggerating those standards, but rather on improving their health and lessening genetic illnesses. My point was merely to correct the misconception that certain breeds exist solely for the lulz.
As for the chihuahua, there are records of them going back at least two hundred years, as well as a description of small dogs being in Aztec markets from a letter from 1520. As for the "land race breed," if you're referring to the Xoloitzcuintle, the chihuahua is not descended from that. They're both descended from the small dog mentioned in that letter. Xoloitzcuintles were bred to be larger, while retaining the original breed's hairless trait while chihuahuas either kept the size or got smaller, but lost the hairless trait. Again, though, the fact that "deer head" chihuahuas are considered a fault is stupid. 99% sure the "apple head" comes with health issues and should be considered the fault.

My ex had a daschund (can’t remember how to spell it) and as cute as he was, lil man had some serious problems. He had back issues from falling off of the couch one time. When I was growing up my family had a boxer and me and him used to play “attack the quarterback” on the trampoline where we would line up on each side of the trampoline and jump at eachother for houes. He lived to be an old man and never had any problems

I got Rafeiro's myself. Livestock guardian dogs that are quite close to their ancestors. I read a couple days ago that a Rafeiro (do Alentejo) is the oldest dog that ever lived (30!) Not your typical family dog. It's not a real breed. It just means 'dog from Alentejo" and it's loosely a breed.
However, there is more than just deformities. Some normal looking dogs like for example the Bernese Mountain dog only lives up to 4 or 5 years on average because a lot of them get cancer when they're young. Breeds your be called inbreeds.
Another Fun Fact: The hanging ears are for cuteness too since it comes with a loss of hearing of around 70%

And I fear that the same fate will come to the French bulldog as well. They are still somewhat fine now, but with all the hype around them now that people realise that we've fucked up the English bulldog beyond repair I fear for their future in the next few decades
Bulging eyes are caused by a physiological size constraint to what the mammal eye needs in order to be an eye. So as the skull shrinks, the soft tissue is forced to form a very shitty enlarge sphincter instead of normal eyelids.
And that "apple dome" some chihuahuas have? That's their brain cavity reorienting itself as the skull does some genetic gymnastics in efforts to counter the eye socket and snout problems. Bonus points: the smell centers in the brain changes location in those domes! As in, if they weren't tilted backwards, it would still be a mutant.
And then theres the American Kennel (Klux) Klub. There's a time limit to register "thoroughbred bloodlines" once a new breed is recognised. "Missed the limit? Then throw that beast in the ocean because it's a worthless mutt. Better luck next time." Societies like the AKC have turned dog breeding into european noble blood lines. No one cares if you're second-degree cosanguinous (aunt-nephew), make puppies to continue the bloodline and keep it pure. Sounds pretty terrifying suddenly, right?

Hard agree on Chihuahuas… I had one, my Princess Maiya who was a real Mexican chihuahua and had long hair, healthy features and was really chill and adventurous. Every “purebred chihuahua” or the stupid flavors like teacup or apple head or whatever the fuck.. those are the monsters! They have all kinds of issues!
My princess had evolutionary reasons for all of her cuteness and that’s why I loved her. He had a furry tummy and paws to protect from hot sand, and her fur repelled sand and dirt like magic! She was the most chill homie I’ve ever had and everyone who owned a chihuahua would be like “She’s not a chihuahua, is she?!” and I’m like… yeah, just not a fucked up inbred one. She’s a dog from chihuahua Mexico, not some wolf midget with the rage virus! Damn…
My sister payed a ton for a special chihuahua to match her Rottweiler and that dog is fat, angry, refuses to ever listen, she’s missing half her teeth and going blind, she honks and spazzes out all the time, and her neck is fatter than her head so she slips out of her leash. No she’s not over fed or overweight, she’s just built like a furry snowman or football… she has a tiny head and big body.. lmao she’s so ugly and miserable but she’s my little buddy. She’s the family cockroach. Every other dog has passed away and she’s the last one standing, a grumpy old bitch who refuses to listen or move when told.
My Maiya was perfectly healthy until 15 and got sick and passed away within a day… it happened so fast and it was a rare occurrence.
My buster, Basset Beagle got cancer but lived a long happy and healthy life until the end.
Dolce (the old half dead one) is still around but her big brother Diesel the Rott had that stomach flip thing from choking on something and he died years ago…
Dolce had another brother Danny Doodle who was a beaten and abused mini pin my sister stole and he had brain damage and eventually he got outside and got hit by a car… :(
So yeah, Dolce and Me are the last ones standing. I have lung cancer so we just lay around miserable together and wait to see who dies first… haha I know it’s fucked up, but that’s life.

The life of a pug is simply a constant nightmare. They choke on air with every breath, are prone to infections because of the wrinkles on their faces and their eyes can just randomly pop out of their sockets at the slightest excess of effort or excitement.
And the worst part is that not only pugs suffer from this, all breeds with flat faces have pretty much the same issues.

ok 2 things (since i'm a total nerd about dogs lol)
1. dachshunds were bred with short legs to be able to fit into badger dens and hunt them
2. most of the time chihuahuas (and other small dogs) act like that because people constantly overstep their boundaries and treat them like toys because they're small
