    Hey DanDan, saw a few comments on your previous videos about the way you talk, if you are too commanding / pressuring / whatever. A lot of them were over the top but I wanted to quickly voice something.
    It's refreshing to see that you'v become less "do this do that" but you still are able to deliver your sense of care and wanting her to be safe, you're allowing her to learn for herself some more. It shows you are considerate and mature, and it's cool you found the balance. Good on you, it made me enjoy the video more.
    On a normal note, you've become one of my favourites to watch because you have a nice enthusiasm and charisma to you in the way you choose to talk. Keep it up.

Afterwards, been practicing on a school’s parking lot and referred to what I’ve learned and a few hours ago, I went on my first 5 mile ride! Thank you for creating these videos! Thank you!

    I really commend Dan Dan for the way you are handling teaching Nikki taking one level of experience at a time... I am a second time rider after 47 years of not having a bike... took the basic rider's training course to get my license, however, I am a lone rider... I have no partner so getting out on the road I have had to learn as I go... These video vlogs are such a great help in sharpening my awareness I can't say enough for how much good you are doing for the riding community... you are a blessing and Nikki is so awesome how she is coming along... Thanks for being a blessing and sharing... Appreciate what you do...

  • @clbaker24
    @clbaker24 Před 5 lety +1

    The reason she was having problems with the clutch and couldn't shift down is because she wasn't downshifting fully, motorcycles need to be moving in order to shift multiple gears. for example, if you're in 3rd and then pull the clutch and breaks instead of downshifting once you come to a stop you won't be able to get to 1st the bike will go to neutral then if you release the clutch and pull it you can shift to 1st. Like @DanDanTheFireman said not an issue, however, its better rider safety and for the bike to downshift. I only know this because I'm a new rider myself... to the street that is. Traded for an EN500 09 Love your videos @DanDanTheFireman huge inspiration to us new riders... please keep it up!!

    See the comments already, Classic! All the critic's will begin surfacing now like a lake of lost bobber's released from the debris below, and all at once. Nikki is doing great. No sense in throwing her into rush hour traffic like your Dad taught you to swim at the pond. Throw them in and see if they sink or not. You have a lot of good advice. I hope that people will get out of their own way long enough to learn something to help themselves some sunny day. Great job highlighting the hazards.

    Watch this video I noticed there was no buffering much by Nikki. I am studying for my learners licence and my book says keep a buffer and ride single file. Nikki should be riding on your side or in the middle not close to the double lines and oncoming cars. Your rules in the states are probably different to Australia. Got to say you've given some great advice about keeping well back from the car in front at the lights in case they wanted to reverse. I didn't consider that and it wasn't mentioned in my book. Love your videos.

  • @Scampcam
    @Scampcam Před 5 lety +8

    In the UK, we have the '2 second rule', where you should be able to see a driver go past something, count to 2 and you shouldn't pass the same thing before your 2 count. This is for decent braking distance. 4 for rain, 10 for snow/ice/fog. etc.

    • @generalgrevious815
      @generalgrevious815 Před 5 lety +1

      The US has the same rule.

    • @gamesforbelgium
      @gamesforbelgium Před 5 lety

      In Belgium there was a campaign about the distance rule recently. You should be able to sing "Last night a DJ saved my live" in dry condition (2 sec) and "Last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart" in wet conditions (3 sec) and you shouldn't have passed the reference point before the end of your singing.

    • @maxlutz3674
      @maxlutz3674 Před 5 lety

      Germany has a similar rule however tailgating is very common. So I try to keep at least 2 seconds to the car in front of me and about 4 seconds to the car in front of that. Usually I end up with about 3 or more seconds to the vehicle in front of me.

    Sometimes bikes will have a hard time downshifting back into first gear if you are doing it once you're at a full stop. Either try rolling the bike forward as you are attempting to downshift (if you're in a higher gear while stopped), or downshift before coming to a full stop. This might've been the issue Nikki was having.

    • @aesyrasongwood2844
      @aesyrasongwood2844 Před 5 lety +5

      I started riding this year on a Rebel 500. I find the best way to get into first when it does that "catch" is to apply a little pressure down on the shifter and gently ease out the clutch. As you tickle the beginning of the friction zone the gear reliably pops down to first for me. Careful not to let it out too quick, of course.
      Rolling the bike a little does the same job, but is a little slower from a standstill, I find.

    I dont know how this is in the US...but here in germany we have a traffic rule that says you have to use the right lane as much as possible. If there are 2 or more lanes, you have to pass another vehicle at least every 20 seconds and if you dont, move over to the right lane. So the middle lane is for those who want to pass those in the right lane and the left lane is for those who want to go even faster than those who are in the middle lane. But all of them have to switch to the right as soon as there is no one left to overtake. Also its forbidden to pass someone from the right.

    Hey Nikki I got to tell you you have such a great attitude awesome to see and Dan you're a great calm teacher. Only thing I would comment on is for Nikki to apply a little back brake for the final few feet when stopping and reduce front brake or none at all (so front suspension doesn't dip which make bike hard to control) and when stopped keep pressure on back brake and balance bike with left foot so you won't roll forward or backwards then when taking off again use clutch friction zone then slowly let go of back brake. Love watch your videos I'm always feel like I'm riding with you's lol..

GJ thoo!! :D Have to add that the cars around me was the thing who made me nervous even if I wasn't a pro on MC, you never know what the cars (driver) will and can do without looking for Bikes!

    I've allways wanted to ride a bike but allways been nervous because of the good old "they're death traps" comment from other people and I get it but these videos are so helpful and reassuring.

    I start taking my classes today to start riding. I know with seat time I'll get more confident but I think riding in traffic for the first time will get me a little nervous.

    First time I rode in traffic is right after I bought my first bike. Dude cut me off then hopped the curb in front of me. Scared me into really paying attention to road strategy.

    DDFM ... love your instructional videos and how you explain what you do and your advice to Nikki. Like her, I recently purchased my own Honda Rebel 500 and am enjoying the roadways as a new rider. One request for yet one more instructional video would be a downhill negative camber turn from a stop or very slow speed? We have these in several areas in the Monterey Peninsula areas of California and they are the devil to negotiate. Riding these corners is something they didn't mention in the MTC Basic course and I haven't found information on any of the websites nor in publications. Thanks in advance and keep the video's coming.

      And my husband rides behind me like you've done with Nikki. Using the two-way Cardo systems, we can communicate with each other and he offers tips and encouragement telling me what I can improve on and am doing correctly. Each ride gets better and better with my confidence and abilities. Thanks to you both for this ...

    1st gear ? It's easiest to go down to 1st while still moving at like 2 mph right before you stop and any bike will always down shift. Even Hondas will be glitchy if ur not moving and go for 1st. There is nothing wrong usually and that is just part of a manual transmission. You get the same thing in cars sometimes. Push back at stop lights with right foot and shift to 1st it always works.

  • @GaryLordsWayMinistry

    Safety courses always instruct us to head for the rear of any car that is turning in front of you, you are much likelier to not hit it by going behind the car instead of swerving left into its path, as they have already committed to hitting the gas and going for the turn. So swerve to the right and go behind them, and aim for wear they already have been, instead of heading for where they are going to drive through the turn. If I am in doubt of the driver on the side street and coming into an intersection I turn my lights to bright to get their attention so they are more likely to see me coming at them.

    She will have to rev up the engine to downshift into first if she is going faster than that gear will allow her to go and she will skid the tire if she lets out the clutch too fast going to fast. Sometimes it doesn't even want to go due to the clutches trying to come up to speed of the bike. So where were your gloves?
