    TBI vs TPI! Riding my 2023 KTM 300XC with Throttle Body Injection (TBI) and my 2021 KTM 300XCW Erzberg with Transfer Port Injection (TPI) back to back to talk about the differences between TBI and TPI and what stands out.
    2021 KTM 300 Erzberg:
    The 300 TPI engine on my 2021 KTM 300 Erzberg has smooth linear power that has run perfectly for me from 11F to 95F temperatures. I like oil injection for the gas and go simplicity. The TPI 300 engine has very smooth roll on torque (which some riders complain is too smooth) with less peak power and a little flatter feel up top compared to TBI. The PDS chassis feels smaller and has quicker steering than the newer linkage chassis on the '23 300XC. Still a very fun bike on the trails.
    2023 KTM 300XC:
    The '23 300XC TBI engine is powerful! The low to mid partial throttle roll on torque feels much stronger on the TBI engine with a more classic carb like meaty power feel. There is also a noticeable difference between Map 1 and Map 2 on the 300XC. Map 1 (stock) is a little smoother response while Map 2 (aggressive) has stronger throttle response with a little longer pull way up top. The chassis on the '23 300XC feels firmer and bigger (better ergos for taller riders...I am 6' 2" 190 lbs).
    While both engines are 300cc fuel injected 2-strokes they feel different. The 300 TPI is less powerful overall with a smoother roll on power feel. Perhaps better for the off road woods riders. The 300 TBI feels like it makes 3~4 more peak HP and has more meaty and stronger low to mid throttle torque feel and Map 2 is very responsive. Perhaps better for more open style off road and moto riding. Both are very good engines. Nice to have choices!

    Thanks for the video. I’m having trouble deciding on which one to get. They both have their positives and negatives. In the end, I really don’t think I gab go wrong with either one.

      You are 100% correct - both are very fun bikes! Did some frozen trail rides on both this week and still fun to ride them 24F on the trails. I forgot how smooth the 300 TPI engine runs and also the slightly smaller and more compact feeling chassis. Nice to have choices!

    Riding flat land like you're doing, of course you're going to want to ride and feel the crazy power. But when you ride in super technical trails like we do in AZ, Col, CA and in Ut...you want linear power even when you're coming out into the open space for a while. Still love that TBI though.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem

      Yes smooth power makes technical trails easier. The throttle hand to rear wheel connectivity of the TBI engine is very good and even in the aggressive green map even playing on some hills in the woods.... czcams.com/video/dUpHM7r94kY/video.html

      I have a 2020 TPI 300 with Coober ECU, high comp head, FMF factory pipe with a turbincore and its been a great bike for 295 hours. I just got a new 2023 TBI 300 and bone stock it has more power and better throttle response everywhere in the RPM range. I was planning on keeping the 2020 but now I just don't see myself ever riding it unless the 23 is broke.

    Sweet…. I’m also 6’2 at 205. Easier to ride the tbi as the foot pegs are lower?
    Also, is that tbi a special addition? Looks like a factory Ed, but don’t see that as an option…

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem +2

      The '23 chassis and ergos feel a little better for me (seems like a little bit more room and XC-W footpegs are 5mm higher so shorter distance to the seat). I moved some plastic over from my 22.5 KTM 450 Factory Edition to my '23 300XC...I like more orange!

    Hey, I got a ktm 2023 XCW and I want the new radiator shrouds that are on the 2023 XCs, do they fit on the 2023 XCW tanks or would I need to get a new tank seat and subframe to do that?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem

      The 2023 SXF/XC shrouds are from the all new KTM chassis and will not fit the old chassis and I am pretty sure you cannot bolt on the new seat/tank/subframe...very different layout (for example the rear shock is shorter). KTM should be announcing the 2024 XCW models shortly and they will have the all new chassis and plastic. Question l just purchased the 2024 husky heritage tx 300 that has the frame that covers the grab holes that elso let air into the air box does the tx feel like it's restricted in the amount of air flow it need I'll be picking up the husky in about 3 weeks there doing some mods on the bike. Great channel l always look forward to a new down load happy trails

      Congratulations on your new TX300! Did Husky make a Heritage Edition for 2024 model year!!?? I've ridden my '23 TX300 back to back with my '23 300XC (when I still owned it) and my buddy Dave's 23 300SX and do not notice any difference in power. I do notice less intake noise on the TX300. Also the TX300 comes with a vented airbox cover if you feel more air flow is needed. Let me know your thoughts on the 24 TX300...Brembo brakes and spring forks...nice upgrades over the 23 model!

      @robrozek9265 Před 10 měsíci

      It's a left over tx 2023 haritage that had a very nice rebate so it will have the air forks and most likely the Brake Text components but every once and awhile they put Brembos on a bike because of supply chain issues I'll now when l pick it up. I watched your tx 300 down loads and if it has Break Teck I'll be all right with it . Thank you for your quick response happy trails

    It’ll be interesting when the aftermarket comes up with something to address the gas pickup to from the lower left side of the tank instead if just relying on splashing around gas on the new tbi. 😎

      With the fuel pump located at the low point on the tank (previous design) I could run until about 25~30mm's of fuel was showing. Have not tried that yet on the new '23 300XC fuel tank though I often run with about 50~60mm of fuel showing

    The forks must’ve been terrible if you’ve already installed cone valves?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem +1

      Not at all - the AER forks on the 2023 KTM 300XC work very well and are tunable with clickers and pressure. I used them about 10 hours to get a feel for how they work in all conditions. I have a set of WP Cone Valve spring forks that I've used on my previous Husky TX300 and also on my Erzberg 300. This set of CV forks have worked great for me and I wanted to try them on the all new '23 300XC...still my favorite forks on an Austrian 300.

    How the transmission compare on the xc vs xcw? Ive heard the 23 xc now use the wide ratio tranny!

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem

      Yes the '23 300XC has a gearbox similar to the XCW but actually all the gears a little lower and closer together - sounds strange but it works. The gears are a little closer together (XC style). 1st is super low for trials kind of stuff but 2nd/3rd are the working gears on the trails. 3rd/4th work great on the MX track. I like it!

    • @RC.56
      @RC.56 Před rokem

      I see that they sell both a 300xc and an xcw. Just the xc is now geared like a previous xcw, and the new xcw has even lower gearing? Thanks.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem +1

      @@RC.56 The new 300XC gearbox has lower and closer ratios than the current 300XC-W gearbox. I prefer the new 300XC ratios...nice low 1st gear for super slow stuff and no gap between 2nd and 3rd (usual complaint on the XC-W gearbox).

  • @nightrider4370
    @nightrider4370 Před rokem

    If it has more roll on power at 14/49 compared to 13/50 can u imagine how it would feel with the 13/50 like the TPI?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem +1

      KTM changed the primary ratios also so when I looked at a gear chart comparing the previous 300XC/XCW to the new '23 300XC I could see 1st thru 4th gears were lower and closer together while 5th was close to the same and 6th was about the same. So the 300XC actually already has a slightly lower ratio compared to the TPI. Motocross Action magazine test on the '23 KTM 300SX shows 55hp and aroud 35ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheel - that is a LOT of power and torque!
