  • Round 2 of my 2023 Beta 300 Race Edition vs 2023 KTM 300XC back to back on a short woods loop! Back to Back rides are a great way to get a feel for the unique characteristics of different bikes. This time the KTM 300XC were within about 0.2 secs of each other...so evenly matched in lap time yet so different in ride feeling when ridden back to back. Comments for each bike....
2023 Beta 300 Race Edition: Lap Time 2:33.76
The Beta 300 engine has softer initial throttle response with a smoother build of power...what I call a "full flywheel" feeling to the engine which is a slower RPM build that finds traction. This engine feels made for technical off road riding and runs clean with stock jetting from 45F~72F temperatures I have experienced so far. The Beta 300RE front end feels a bit more precise and quick turning and loves to dive into the tight corners on the trail. The KYB suspension is plush and absorbing and moves through the stoke to absorb the bumps. The Beta has an overall smaller feeling to the bike (especially from seat forward) yet does not feel cramped for my 6'2" 190 body. The standing riding position is natural feeling with the footpegs feeling low and back.
    2023 KTM 300XC: Lap Time 2:33.53
My current favorite overall 2-stroke dirt bike. The all new throttle body fuel injected and electronic power valve engine sets a new bar for quick revving big power with amazingly linear and strong partial throttle torque. The counter balanced engine has almost not vibration at the footpegs and very little at the handlebars. The updated chassis has traded some steering quickness for a more planted weighty feel up front with better stability at speed. The overall firmness of the new frame felt on the 350/450SXF 4-stroke models is gone with the 300 TBI engine in the chassis. This 300XC has WP Cone Valve spring forks which I prefer over the stock AER forks. The stock rear shock works well. The KTM has a bigger overall feel with a taller seat height and taller feel in the corners.
    Summary:
The lap times are 0.23 secs apart over this short loop!!! These bikes are so evenly matched lap time wise and so close in terms of overall performance yet feel so different when ridden back to back. The KTM is about big power with amazing controllability. The new chassis is more stable at speed with a planted more weighty feel up front. The Beta is about smooth power in a quick handling chassis and amazing KYB suspension that combine to make a very effective off road bike. Both bikes are very fun to ride yet have very different characteristics. What do you like in a 2-stroke dirt bike? Let me know in the comments. More of these back to back rides soon!

Nice job with the comparison. I recently grabbed two 2023 Beta 200 RRs, one for me and one for my kid. Watching how easy the front end comes up from your other comparison on these 300s, even the Beta which is smoother, I am glad I grabbed the 200. We trail ride at a decent pace (all relative probably slow for others), but being 55 and just getting back into trail riding, the 200 is perfect. That 300 power is impressive, and more than I could use at this point, would be easy to get in trouble. I really like fuel injection though, as I was able to ride some friends 22 250 XC-Ws, really love those KTMs. Other plus to the Beta though was it is easy to plate in NY, amazingly. No worries when connecting the trails and having to do a mile or two on the street. Thanks for posting.

Glad you like the channel! The Beta 200 is a great bike with an impressive engine - I had a 2019 Beta 200RR so I can understand why you like yours so much!

The super smooth power and precise front end feel and KYB suspension all combine to make the Beta and easy and fun bike to ride.

Hauling butt through there buddy, good job! Curious to see the Beta compared to the W, especially suspension plushness.

Thanks Scott! The new Beta 300 Race Edition is fun! I did the '23 300XC vs the '21 Erzberg last fall - very close in terms of lap times. The KYB setting on the '23 Beta 300 Race Edition is very good with a little better progressive damping compared to the KTM 300 XPLOR forks.

I ended up getting the 24 Ktm 300xcw thinking it was going to be in-between these two bikes. I'm disapointed in the power and wishing I got the Beta or kept my 23 XC 😐

I’m in Hilliard how close are you? Love my 21 Beta 350 race but those 300’s keep tempting me. Picked mine up from Pony as well.

I really appreciate that you say that you're in Ohio so the viewers don't wonder where you are or stuck here in California All we have is freeways and crowded

You shaved some time off the KTMs lap from yesterday! I was thinking you would need to get your hands on a 300 XC W, looks like KTM got the gears ratios i correct with semi tight trails with the XC..

Yes I pushed harder on both bikes. Yes I really like the new lower and closer 1st~5th gear ratios on the new '23 300XC and 6th still there for open trails or fireroads. Here is my '21 KTM 300XCW Erzberg back to back with my '23 300XC from earlier this year....close lap times czcams.com/video/Lst9xTJSP5c/video.html

You hear the rear suspension on the ktm at braking, stamping ? Even cone valve fork and real tyres does not bring the ktm in front. Your driving seems more “clumsy” on the ktm, but that may be misleading just looking at the video

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  Před rokem +1

For me the Beta turns into the tight corners better with more precision and less effort up front - feels a bit more responsive. The KTM feels "bigger" and takes a bit more effort in the tight corners. Very close in lap times (less than 1-sec difference) and sometimes the KTM wins and sometimes the Beta wins.
