I respect gamespots review over the ridiculous 8.4 IGN gave it. This game is extremely limited. Budget title with 6 to 8 starting characters. No a lot of stages and no single player or story mode currently. All you can go is go online in ranked or player matches. No way the game should get anything over 6.5 or 7 just based on those facts.
it depends whether you're reviewing it as a game or as a fighter. if the fighting mechanics are good and you review it as a fighter you give it a higher rating.
jackalackb17 Fighter or not the lack of content brings the score down automatically. How do you think these reviews are done or I should say suppose to be done. When you factor in every component, not just one aspect. It might be a great fighter, but still lacking.
The the price of the game, isn't the same has a full game. So i think in this case the game should be score by its mechanics and how the game work, and not by its content.
i would rather have 8 balanced and unique characters than 30 characters where a quater of them are almost the same and 3/5 are competitively useless
Raymond Williams Stand for something or you will fall for anything. A game being released in this fashion should be unacceptable by all gamers. People do what you allow them to do. You know the game is lacking and you would love for it to have more content. Don't try to damage control. You will learn the movements of the 6 characters they have within 2 weeks making the guessing game less of a challenge. It is always good to have variety in a video game.
Microsoft ruined Rare and its IPs. It saddens me that KI has been stripped down to a budget title.
I heard Rare was already doing bad before MS bought them. They needed the money so they took MS' offer. After 15 years they needed to be sure KI was relevant again, so I guess they wanted to go the safe road and thus making KI a budget title was easier to save money with rather than risk high development money on a game that could be a hit or miss. The decision was unfortunate for us as KI fans, but understandable from a business standpoint.

Just because it's a 'budget' title, it doesn't make it any less fun to play. If anything, it makes it more affordable and accessible to those curious about the game.
No doubt. I'm sure if I owned an Xbox ONE (which is probably never gonna happen), I'd be downloading and playing the crap out of this game.

blowing 500 bucks on a system for one game is an incredible waste of money, especially one as half-assed as this one. i love KI too and appreciate the remake but its obvious the team didn't have a passionate approach considering aesthetically it looks like SF4 and control-wise it plays similar to Tekken. I mean, if you're going to recreate a game, throw some originality into it so it pops out from the other carbon copies. sadly, this looks like a generic fighter clone, but interesting nonetheless.. eh, ill play it, because i have a great love for KI. btw, they should remake jago not to look so much like an overly buff anime ninja.

Passionate approach my ass. This thing is quite the marvel considering its less than 1 year production time. I agree to some extent to your comment about people who buy a console for a game (which is counter-argued to the fact that a console like this can't just have one-fucking-only-game in them, so those people aren't that stupid), but I can't say that what they've done is half-assed. I mean look at Skullgirls, it's not on par with the usual fighting-game kings, but it still is pretty fucking good non-the-less.

Look, all I'm saying is that sure it's a stupid reason to buy a console based on one single game, but in the end consoles like XBOXONE won't be that bad. I mean, it's still like a console we know, especially with most if-not all of the DRM policies removed. Added, maybe there are going to be games that will surprise us and make the console really worth it. I mean who could guess that Uncharted and Heavy Rain would come from PS3? And some people do buy more than just those exclusives alone to enjoy the product. As a whole, I'm just trying to say that the game isn't that bad in my first comment, and in this one to justify that buying a console just for a game at first isn't as brain-cell-destroying stupid as it seems to be.
Eckskalibur Funny that you mention Uncharted and Heavy Rain, Which act as a limited story that lasts only a specific length. *nothing wrong with that!!, Just making sure you know I'm not bashing that type of game!* Especially when I'm getting games that will last a couple of years. Being Destiny, KI, Sunset Overdrive, and Fable Legends. I personally miss the days of Halo 2 and 3. I played those games almost exclusively, and Halo 3 for me lasted a good 5 years of happy gaming. That to me justifies the console. 100% so.
The reviewer seems a bit under informed. The story mode won't be released until after season 1's characters are all released. The game you pay for comes under a few different price models, and should be explained for obvious reasons. Maximillian's coverage of the title is more informed, and any who are interested should look into it.
So it is a free game that will be getting roster and apparel updates on a regular basis.... why does this get a 7 exactly, GS gave no reason? I can not wait to play this game!

Played this in the arcades, I think if this game was meh I'd be satisfied to play it again with beautiful graphics and free flowing modern fighting combat! Seems like most of the reviews don't know how to score a dynamically priced video game. Cccccoommmbboooo BBbrreeaaakkkkeerrrr!!!!!!

Hmm.. imagine if any other game released with the very little amount of content that this KI has. They can say "we will add more characters and modes later on" but that's every game now n days. Update here, dlc there soo... Yeah. 7. Maybe 6.5 idk but I'm glad this review seems more real than igns review. I feel like Ign got paid off by Microsoft.

you do know that in the 90's KI had ports exclusive to the snes and n64 right? AND in concept Killer Instinct was in the same situation as Bayonetta 2?
Zagardal They say its f2p but you only get 1 character which is a joke (even demos have more than 1) and you need to pay a shit ton of money to get all... which is not the way fighting game should work.

Aullah If you're really into fighting games, you're gonna buy the whole thing and not play f2p, and it's 40 bucks (and I think 20 for just the first season), hardly a shit ton of money. And for casual players, the supposed plan is to rotate the free character every couple of weeks, so you can get some play time with every char and you can still play anybody online, so you can get a feel for the matchups. I don't think that's a bad f2p system.
I'm gonna play this game in my Xbox One as well as Guilty Gear Xrd on my PS4 and Super Smash Bros. 4 on my WiiU!

Does this game still have an active player base? I recently bought an xbox one s (my first non pc gaming machine) and I'm currently looking for a 2d fighter to sink my teeth into since there are literally no fighting games on pc with active player bases.
I'm looking at killer instinct rather then mkx because it is much cheaper and because of its has a much smaller roster, with being in university I don't always have a lot of spare time so the small roster is appealing to me.

It's probably just better to wait until the devs add in storylines, endings, new characters and more gameplay modes, via future DLCs to "Killer Instinct." I know it's free-to-play now, but it's so stripped down & lacking in it's current form.
I'm still having a lot of fun with my SNES KI with my brothers, this game is the only reason I'm thinking on geting an XBOX ONE, maybe for christmas next year.

I glad to play this early and wait for the other characters plus new ones in season 2. I say at the end of season 1 with the story modes and hopefully a lobby system 8.5

I totally agree it needs a reboot i totally want this but a flash back in this game would be amazing.
So overall, and I'm sure someone else pointed this out, this was semi-rushed for the Xbox One launch. At least they put their focus into the gameplay, which seems to be getting great feedback. However, the lack of extras, or even a proper story mode, definitely knocks this down a few pegs. At least this relieves some of the pain of not playing this anytime soon due to having no major desire for an Xbox One... hell, I'm not even getting a PS4 for at least a year or two. But hey, maybe if I get an Xbox One somehow, there'll be a complete version of this game on disc.

This game will never be what the first ones were on the nintendo. I get sad when I remember when MS bought Rareware the original founding brothers left. MS killed Rare.
Microsoft, EA, Activision, Capcom; just a few of the most notoriously greedy conglomerates in the gaming industry, practicing unfair trades such as paying DLC to purchase what is essentially an entire game (colors, outfits, characters, etc..), or turning legitimately loved titles/franchises into carbon copy mockeries that hold little to no inspiration. Hiding in a pretty guise of talented artists, programmers and developers, they use this polished shell to create gorgeous games with no sense of passion or originality. Cut and Paste Ultra 2.0 Deluxe w/ Pre-loaded bonus weapons, updated graphics, and more quest lines that including gathering 1000 things to feed a thing which turns into a thing of which you help the thing then eventually lead the thing to another thing which gives the thing thing strength and you're forced to turn on thing lest watch the thing destroy the world! It's getting old... zzzzzz

No. The Combo Breaker pack is $20 and nets you all season 1 characters. The Ultra pack which is the $40 one nets you the combo breaker pack along with all season 1 accessories/costumes (current and later dlc) as well as KI classic with extras for that game.
And nowhere mentioned is the fact that you have to pay for the whole roster separately.
A whole $20. Gosh that's gonna make people go into bankruptcy.

I'd rather have trial method A where I can get a taste for a few of the fighters rather than trial method B where I'm stuck with one. It would be like if Valve made a demo for Counter Strike but did in the style of Shadowrun's demo.
giguyjoe2nd . When Injustice came out with its demo, they had Wondy, Bats, and Lex. I played Bats exclusively in that watered down arcade mode with only 4 stages. I really enjoyed it just trying to learn the mechanics and all. The KI 'demo' is actually a much better value imho. I also have DoA 5 Ultimate's 'demo', but I don't enjoy it much since I don't enjoy DoA's gameplay even though they have like 4 characters off the bat, but I know I enjoy the new KI's since I have tried it once.

They rotate the free character so it's not always the same character. This way you can get a feel for all the characters.

This is a full on vortex fighting game. Looks good. One of the few titles on XB1 I want to play.
Why are people whining about the pricing? You only buy the characters you want. Sounds like a good idea as long as all characters added up don't go over 60$.

How do you give a full review on a unfinished game. The story mode, additional characters and features are comming down the road. Maybe this a new thing in the industry? Will they re review the game after season 2?
I think they will do another review. They probably did a review now just cause people are eager to know how it is and also cause other companies are doing reviews now as well.
There's no way I could ever get into fighting games. Some people are already 30-40 years ahead of me.

"Leagues ahead", "AAA Titles". You're dreaming! Forza is fun to have a few games with mates and what not, but not remotely close to an AAA title. In fact, there has been no recent racing game that has "blown" anyone away (generally). And some of the games you've listed most people probably have never even heard of. You are incredibly biased. Xbone is no where near "leagues ahead". Console wars aside, its a decent console but a review coming from your biased ass is nothing but comedy as you are pretty much opening up your tender rectum for Microsoft to ram into.

Everyone seems to leave out just how much they didn't bring back from the old games that were great... Danger finishers, Ultimate combos, Humiliations, Stage ringouts, and not to mention the endings are abysmal... It's the xbox one... Your reward? A slideshow... Snes had cinematic endings...

No "Story Mode" is fine with me, but not even an Arcade Mode? And you have to pay to get other characters? I was thinking about getting an Xbox One to play this, but I didn't realize how it...just is.

I honestly don't like the way the game looks, definitely a step back as far as the art direction goes. However, the gameplay looks pretty darn awesome!
