  • It looks like another major retailer is taking a step back from physical media in stores. Microsoft appears to be turning in a big week in the PlayStation store leading them to surprisingly the top spot even over Sony.

    RE: The "Physical Phase Out", now is just about the *worst* time to be committing to this - just recently our national public broadcasting news service ran a report on the fact that people are getting fed up with too many streaming providers and the cycling libraries never having what they want to watch, and going back to discs for the simple reliability of it all.
    I've never stopped buying physical, myself, but signs really do point to something of a renaissance for physical movies and TV as people get fed up with the crowded and unsatisfactory streaming landscape.

    • @AcidDotDrop
      @AcidDotDrop Před 22 dny

      Well yeah, people finally start to realise how companies have taken away media ownership from consumers little by little. People have been blinded by the convenience of having everything readily available without the need of huge libraries, have been praising it as better ignoring all the time how companies nudged us where they wanted us. Just like the frog in the boiling pot, once realisation sets in, it's already too late.

      Most people don't buy physical games anymore, so them going away doesn't impact them. It's not really the end of the world, but it does suck. PC has been digital only for like 15 years now. On top of that, physical games are very quickly losing their benefit. Most games that release still require day 1 patches, so you don't really get the benefit of being able to always access your game. The main benefit is ownership/being able to transfer ownership, which is certainly a big deal and worth fighting for, but even that has been eroded by live services and games requiring you to have an account.

      5% off. Plus, they always have sales going on and coupons auto-applied. I mean, I've gotten a lot of movies cheap from the Buy One Get One 50% Off sales which stacks with the extra 5% off. That's the great thing about Target: coupons stack, and you can use them until they expire. When they have coupons for Spend $25 On Health Products Get A $10 Gift Card, I load up on stuff I use anyway and get a handful of $10 Gift Cards in the process, which I use on normal groceries. Its now that they are shocked about it (aside from some games like sea of thieves and some others that WERENT there) but the point is that since Microsoft couldnt beat them in console sales, they now just make a huge chunk of money on sonys game sales instead. And Sony still makes money from the third party license fees, and those Microsoft games only push more PS5 console sales. Really, the only thing that changed is Microsoft giving more people a reason not to own an Xbox, because their games are on PlayStation. Yes, Microsoft makes money selling games on PS5, but they lose Xbox console sales which also results in losing third party license fees and service subscriptions (such as Game Pass). In short, Microsoft's market share will continue to dwindle.

In otherwords people are giving them a try instead of just going "oh, its mocrosoft now, i dont want anything to do with it" and plenty of gamers are petty enough, i could see that being a genuine concern for mocrosoft.

    Yes to weekly tv episode drops. I’ve been saying for years that streaming services messed up by switching to whole season drops. It means that tv shows can’t stay in the public zeitgeist for nearly as long, which I believe leads to more show cancellations and ultimately to overall lower viewership.
    Also, there’s a difference in spending 8 hours watching characters in a series vs spending 8 weeks watching, discussing, and speculating about those characters/storylines. THATS what causes fandoms and long term emotional attachments to form. Now, we all collectively discuss a popular show for a few days before it’s on to the next.
    On top of that, it gives people a reason to stay subbed to a service for longer. Seems like common sense to me? Dropping whole seasons means you have to provide content at a quicker pace, and you end up in the position Netflix is in.
    Also-it’s lame. I miss having convos with my friends about the latest episode of the latest popular show. Now it seems like either we aren’t on the same episode, or the convo jumps immediately to the ending and it becomes more “next season speculation”.

      I grew up with weekly tv series. Once streaming allowed me to binge watch, I NEVER want to go back. It is distressing to me. So often I either wouldn’t remember what went on the week before, or would be gone that night a couple of times in the series and then your’e just clueless. I really hope they don’t do this with all series, if that happens, I guess I’ll just drop streaming and play games full time. LOL!

    I feel bad about physical media dying, but as someone who has been primarily a Steam user for the last 15 years I also understand the ease of digital, no discs and cases to take care of, not having to change a disc to start a new game. The real problem are these companies like Ubisoft who shut things down and take them from hour ubisoft account. Not to mention keeping a disc collection safe with kids is a whole thing by itself.

    I definitely prefer the week-to-week format for streaming shows. Look at X-Men 97, every week there's a new episode, and with it, renewed hype, more talk around it, more people being aware the show exists. While the Fallout show is really good, conversation around it has already slowed down.

    As much as I hate it it makes sense that Walmart and Target would do this. The video game sections of both stores are pretty large and I’m sure they are liking the idea of repurposing all that space if profits are falling. Hell maybe this will lead to the revitalization of video game stores when soon they’ll be the sole providers of physical media. Also one or two new episode per week system is better than binging. It’s not only superior storytelling it keeps the show in all discussions for longer. I guarantee if Shogun dumped all its episodes at once six weeks ago we probably wouldn’t still be talking about it at this point.

    What I find disheartening about physical media diminishing is that streaming services are becoming as expensive as cable used to be, unless you're someone who only subscribes to like 1 or 2 services, only to see these services push out physical media and put everything behind a paywall to get access to shows/movies that THEY allow you to watch at their choosing. Without physical media, there will be many movies/shows that will disappear forever only to hope that a service will provide it. Anyone is short sighted if no one sees how controlling that is. Streaming services will be glad physical media is gone so they can keep you from going anywhere else to access this stuff. I've said it before, there is plenty of media, whether music or movies that can only be acquired through physical means because streaming services either don't have the rights or don't care about acquiring any said movie/show. Anyone thinking you can get everything on the internet is a farce.

    All those games (Fallout) were on sale on Xbox for the last couple weeks. People were able to get the whole game, all DLC included, for about 10 bucks. So, that made buying them an easy decision. Especially after watching the show.
    Also, Fallout 3 was my favorite too. Like you said, walking out of the vault for the first time… almost gave me a hopeless feeling based on it looking so drab, and gritty. Then, after getting into it, I loved it. I didn’t pick up the last 2 DLC’s I didn’t own before the sale ended… and now I’m made of regret.
