    Step aside bob omb. Keep on flying Bullet Bill. There is a new weapon causing damage in the mushroom kingdom, and this one is fuzzy, round, and squishy. One of Mario Tennis Aces coolest features is allowing you to break a players racket. But just how fast would you have to hit the ball in order to do so? And what other consequences would arise from that much force? Well that is what we're about to find out.

    So, basically what you're saying is that the Mario Tennis rackets have a severe design flaw where the handles are manufactured separately from the rest of the racket and rather than being properly anchored together, they have a simple weak adhesive attaching them.
    Alternatively, there's a tennis-racket conspiracy that intentionally introduces defects into the handle...
    Essentially, any entrepreneur-engineer Toad could make a fortune by revolutionizing the racket manufacturing process, unless the conspiracy exists .

      +linkolek
      I'm not sure exactly what glues would work, but there definitely are adhesives that can delaminate under those forces, and there's likely to be more between carbon fiber and wood (because usually the same adhesives work for both of those)
      (Thanks, class on fracture mechanics! Now I can look at a video game and tell what's happening in the game when an object breaks even though the game designers likely never thought of it.)

      @mollie.28.15 Před 5 lety +35

    • @anonymous-el7rl
      @anonymous-el7rl Před 4 lety +28

      @@mollie.28.15 Yes it would; air resistance would slow the tennis ball down, so MORE force is being applied to your own tennis racket than the opponents. I guess the game isn't as realistic as matpat thought.

    • @MasumiSeike
      @MasumiSeike Před 4 lety +17

      Not nessescarly, if your opponents racket is already damaged, it don't need more force.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 Před 4 lety +20

      anony mous No, because the initial momentum of the ball when you hit it is 0, not a negative quantity, thus the change in momentum is less, thus the force is less. Also, air resistance has extremely neglegible effect in these calculations. This is basic physics.

    • @stove3517
      @stove3517 Před 4 lety +5

      Think of it as this:
      Say the gorce needed to break the opponent's racket on a serve is 150.
      You hit it from going 0 towards the right, to 100 to the right. If you return it, with 100 force(A.K.A. -100), it will STOP in the game. You need to hit with DOUBLE the force the server hit it towards you(A.K.A. -200). So, they could over-compensate and hit it with too much force.

    As somebody who's worked with 3d models I know it's much easier to animate the racket coming apart at a segmented piece such as near the handle. So in your joke about being too hard to implement in the game is somewhat true as it happens so quick so wouldn't have to be as precise looking in-game and is only shown to represent it happening compared to promo photos which use higher quality models that are pre-rendered and don't have to worry about causing lag as they're just photos. It's like claiming the balls used to represent Mario's hands in 64 are what his actual hands look like and not just a representation do to limitation. This just shows despite rapidly advancing hardware, cuts like these made to only represent something and not it's exact physical properties in their world are still being made today, whether it be time constraints, memory, stylistic, or just not wanting to spend hours of modeling individual pieces and keeping a low poly count on the base model to improve stability. Long story short it's more likely promo images are more trustworthy to go on as it's more likely to better represent what's actually supposed to be happing as the modelers have a lot more control and less restraints on properly portraying what's actually happening in them. (However not all promo pics and renders are perfect since cloth generators, alpha channels, etc can act a little goofy and when you're rendering an extremely high resolution model it takes a long time and a lot of money so if something small messes up the company may just chose to use the image anyways rather than go back into the model, try to edit the issue and not make it worse and then hope it's fixed for the next render attempt.) Of course I'm no professional but going off my own experiences I really believe that's what's actually happening here.

    Looking at the pictures of the rackets breaking apart and at their shape, I think it is more likely that the Rackets are made from wood. A little research shows that Ash is a fairly common wood that is used to make wooden rackets, it has a shear Strength of 10 MPa.
    Secondly, the racket acts as a lever. In this case I would treat it as a Cantilever. I don't have the expertise to count pixels and compare, but for sake of argument lets say the racket is 72 cm, this falls in regulation size and judging from the screen shots the racket is about 1/2 the size of Mario, it also makes for easier math. The "sweet spot" for a tennis racket can vary, how ever, if we assume that it is 1/4 of the way from the top of the racket and that the top of Mario's hand is 1/4 from the bottom that would mean we have a cantilever with a length of 360mm.
    To find the force exerted on the racket at the top of Mario's hand we use (Force*lengthFromOrgin)/CrossSection = (65N*360mm)/740mm^2 = 31.622N/mm^2 = 31.622 MPa
    Meaning the 65N the ball generates is about 3 times the force needed to break a racket made of Ash wood. Of course an actual racket would be made of laminated wood, for which I could not find a shear strength of and would vary greatly anyway depending on the adhesives used. Then again, it is 3am, I may be wrong about all of that.

      Thirdly, the player swinging the racket is also applying force to swing the racket toward the ball, which also gets amplified at the breaking point via above mentioned lever effect, further reducing the required speed for the ball to break the racket.

    I like how the point at the end was to find how fast the ball would have to move to break the racket, but he said the ball would kill everyone and cause havoc. So you'd need to set off an nuclear reaction explosion to break a racket. I know you wouldn't need to do that, I just find it funny that to get a tennis ball to break a racket there, would need enough force to set off an explosion.

    Reminder that it actually takes multiple hits to break a racket in Tennis Aces, so the force would actually be less as the racket is damaged over time rather than breaking in one hit.
    Also, it probably would have been better to calculate it as if the rackets had broken at a hollow neck, as the official art shows, rather than basing it off of the cheap graphical trick used to split the rackets cleanly in half in-game.
