Who plays competitive poker? Tournament style? It's more luck based than skill based.
There's no real time limit in Poker. You can take your time to strategize through the randomness. What people are complaining about is randomness in a fighting game.
Poker is only luck based if you don't understand numbers.

Well, technically, one of the options for Timed in Ultimate is infinity, so really Smash Bros Ultimate is just flat out impossible to even beat even if the universe lasted forever.
Not to mention custom stages, introduced back in Brawl. Basically another Marioplex in those things.
You should come back to this now that the game has been out for so long and has SO MANY characters. You could cover spirits too and get some REALLY big numbers.

Suggestion. Since you mentioned revisiting this theory and number in the future. Now that Smash Ultimate is getting what is confirmed to be the final character in the title -- whoever is released following Kazuya -- now may be the time, with some revisions. Yes, I will happily help you stretch this to make the Sakurai number.
=76 base-game fighters + 12 DLC = 88 total fighters
=2-8 possible players, CPU and Amiibo options both, with CPUs being set between levels 1-9 and Amiibos being set between levels 1-50
=The Stage Builder option could use the same math & logic as what you presented in Mario Maker which could add an astronomical amount by itself
=Being able to set the BGM to any one of several specified tracks per stage
=Everything that you mentioned 20:09 -- Smashdown, Tourney mode, etc
There's probably more variations that I forgot to mention, but yeah, if you're determined to create a new number to name after Mr. Sakurai, I think I have the theory idea for you.

Well, if you include different skins for each character, than I’m pretty sure that the number would be unknown.

^ this, adds at lest 8 color variants per-character in the 3ds version (which is just a different Wii-U version with less max players count, 4 instead of 8). if they add even just that skin number it will add x8 to the character count list... which is small but oh nelly lets not get into the "gear" possiblities u could get into when it came to "Customizing" fighters... cause each charater had 3 versions for each abilitly button & could wear 4 peices of gear that manipilated their base stats &/or added sub-perks... or u can just play with that setting turned off for all generic characters, but not fully for the 3 Mii characters (gear can be but not ability options as their fully custom made) which btw are in the new Smash, I mean he counted them as a character for the 75 but I'm draging on.

I personally think that if Waluigi is in the game, they shouldn't announce him. They should let people play the game and have him be the last person you unlock. People should just flip out (angrily or happily) when they see his silhouette.
Yeah I agree it would be a cool surprise but the problem is it would be all over the Internet probably even before the end of launch day

You forgot all the pokemon and assist trophy combos. That will add at least 100 more things in the items.
The pokeball/assist trophy are still only one item by themselves each.
He also forgot alternate skins / costumes
Maybe he will add in the different variations of the characters in the next video too. Like Green Kirby, Blue Kirby.
Pokeballs can spawn any pokemon on any given toss so all the pokemon are one item. Counting the different pokemon would be like counting the different places a bobomb could spawn or what a party ball could contain. @Cuttlefish Man smash ultimate has no custome moves.
You forgot that a lot of stages can't be used for 8-Player Smash in SSB4.

The reason MatPat hasn't made Part 2 is because he has still been making it. There was the 11 Fighter's Pass 1 and 2 fighters, the different Pokémon and Assist Fighters in the Pokéballs, Masterballs, and Assist Trophies, Mii Costumes... and the dreaded STAGE BUILDER!! Stage Builder adds infinite possible stages, so I don't think we should be expecting part 2 anytime soon 🥺

Here's a more accurate number for smash ultimate, please note that this calculation does not include different Mii Fighter movesets & customisation options or DLC. And it goes based on the character roster given in the video (which does seemingly include Mii Fighters as part of the roster, but I did not include waluigi): 1.594268941×10^47
The reason competitive smash uses so few items is because no one should be able to win a match because an item happened to spawn on there side. And many stages are banned because the blast zones are to small like wario ware, they have walls which can make it possible to do infinites where your opponents can’t escape, or there so big that the best way to win is to run away for 7 min.

There actually is no coin option in ultimate, there is only Stock, Time and Stamina. Even though he didn't mention Stamina mode he'll still get the same answer because it would fill in the 3rd slot.

A bit of a pet peeve of mine, but I'd like to bring attention to the rest of the SSB dev team who is also working incredibly hard alongside Sakurai to make SSBU the best game it can be. I love Sakurai and the memes surrounding him, but it's not *just* his game.

If you consider it his because he created it, then yeah you're right. And he certainly has a big, if not the biggest, hand in designing the game.
I'm not saying it's wrong to consider Smash to be Sakurai's game, he is the one who created it, indeed. By saying it's not "just his game" I was trying to say that he has an entire team under him who are also putting in a lot of hard work.

If we played every possible match variation of Smash Ultimate once, we would be well into the universe's "Degenerate Era" where there are no stars and no galaxies, just remnants of the last generations of stars and black holes.
13 new characters(Pyra and Mythra are separate), around 9 stages without hazards, 11 new stages, custom moves for miis, mixing game modes, more stages to morph and omega and battlefield, small and big battlefield, spirits, something tells me with all these factored in and more, this might be bigger than the marioplex
