We all know the story by now; Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario saves her, yada yada yada. But what if I told you that the biggest threat to the world of Super Mario Odyssey wasn't a bunch of rabbit goons? Or even Bowser himself? No, what will bring about Mario's DESTRUCTION is bigger, rounder, and you've been collecting the evidence for it the entire game. THAT'S RIGHT! Look up, Theorists! The Moon is out to get you!

Matpat, I don't have the game, so I can't work this out myself, but if you assumed that using gravity to measure things was an okay method, you could take Mario somewhere high on the earth, and have him jump down from it, to get the longest fall possible( or you could just do it off the ground, but you would get a less exact answer). From there you would use pixel measurements to determine the distance that Mario fell, and you could time how long it took him. From there use the master physics distance and velocity equations to solve for acceleration. Once you know the gravitational acceleration of Mario on the planet, take an educated guess of Marios mass based on his height and build. Then use newtons 'gravitational equation set equal to your acceleration you found earlier, then plug in the mass of Mario, the universal gravitational constant, and the distance that Mario jumped from, and solve for the mass of the earth in the Mario universe ( your acc. = G* (mass of Mario * mass of earth)/ distance between them^2)) after that set up a similarity fraction you can cross multiply using our earth and Marios earth ( mass of real earth/ radius of real earth = mass of Mario earth/ radius of Mario earth. You could use that to solve for the radius of Marios earth, or you could use some sort of online resource that relates masses of planets to their radii. After you have done that, do the same thing on the moon, and once you know the radius of the moon you can use pixel measurements on the stage selection screen and from there solve for the distance between the earth and moon, and using the Newton gravity equation again you can solve for the force attracting the two celestial bodies. Thanks matpat, love your videos, and keep up the good work. If you can get the measurements for me I'd love to run the numbers for you, just email me at Locke2134@gmail.com.

while I'm not knowledgable in physics enough to know if your math is correct, thats assuming the earth and moon of mario odyssey are of similar density to our own, as well as assuming that weight of mario proportional to his body shape/size is the same as normal humans. While this kinda of thing would work in say a movie, this mario game makes mario's relation characteristic wise to regular humans even more uncertain. Theres just too many assumptions about mario world's similarity to our own without much solid basis

Mat, you probably won't read this comment. Considering you look for theorists on Reddit, and this comment was posted a year after this video. But, I've tried coming up with some scales.
There's no way to get a good sense of scale from the locations we visit in odyssey. If we measure their area, we'll have no idea how big they are compared to Mario's planet... But, we have an ace up our sleeve! Or in this case, an ace in the back of our closets. So dust off your GameCube, (or Wii) because we're going to Isle Delfino!
If we look at promotional material and other maps for odyssey, you might see a familiar island beside the Mushroom Kingdom. It has the signature, and bizarrely coincidental shape of a dolphin. Other people might see it as hints for a return to sunshine in odyssey DLC, but for now I'm seeing it as a perfect measuring tool.
Scaling the island has the same issue as odyssey's kingdoms; we don't know the size of visitable locations compared to each other, or the rest of the land. But there's one spot on sunshine's island that lets us scale all of Delfino, and maybe the rest of the planet. Delfino Airstrip. Looking at the in-game map of the island, we see that the airstrip is on a small piece of land, in an L shape. (Luigi approved) But rather than the airstrip being a small location on that L, that L is the entire airstrip. The L has the same basic shape, and scale of the airstrip.
If we use Mario as a ruler, we can find the area of the airstrip. It's completely flat plain, so we probably won't have too many issues. With the airstrip's area found, we can look at the island's map; and use the airstrip to find the area of Delfino. With Delfino's area, we can compare it to other kingdoms from odyssey; letting us find the surface area of the whole planet!
But of course, there will be some measuring issues; because of map inconsistencies. Take for example, Earth. If you make a 2D map of Earth, it won't be a completely reliable one. The Earth is a sphere, so creating a flat map of it is impossible to perfect. There will always be angle, and size inconsistencies. BUT, if you have a smaller map of something like a city or an island, the scale becomes consistent due to only slight curvature of the locations. So, the in-game map of Delfino is consistent to the actual island; both size and scale wise.
This measurement may be a bit crude, and kind of difficult to pull off, but you might be able to use this to measure Mario's planet!

Ryan Rhodes because as we know it, the universe and its laws follow mathematical properties, therefore, you wouldn't even exist without math. From another aspect, There would be slim chances for you still being alive if it wasn't for the medical and technological advancements only possible through our understanding of math. Even if you or your parents or anyone previously in your ancestry wasn't saved by medicine before having children, therefore advancing their genes to the next generation, it would not be possible to support current population levels without modern agricultural technologies (as controversial as some might be).None of the technology you rely on to live would be possible without human understanding of math.

    • @riteflyer7793
      @riteflyer7793 Před 6 lety

Ryan Rhodes Well, the universe follows the mathematical properties that we use to explain how it works. It's the same thing. We came up with a way to interpret and explain those properties, but they follow math. When our mathematical system is what the universe follow, it's kind of impossible to really understand/explain. It's like the chicken or egg problem. Do mathematical properties really exist, or is it more coincidental that we have a system that perfectly predicts and explain those very properties. Also, you are then admitting that current population numbers are not sustainable without math, therefore, you would likely not exist, or at least in order for you to exist, many around you (me perhaps) would then not be. The whole problem of discussing this hypothetical comes down to what I just said. I really don't have a better explanation, but it's a fun little thought experiment to discuss.

Have you tried finding an iconic landmark in any of the levels that are also on the level select screen? If you could all you’d need to do is measure Mario’s height, compare it to the landmark and then compare the landmark to the general size of the globe, using the landmark to measure the continent and then using the globes in new donk city to double check!

I got it! If you look closely at the globe on the Odyssey, there's a very tiny island. It was removed from the planet for the rest of the game, but you wanna know what island it was? Well, if you look at old promotional works and removed content, you can easily see that, when lining up the position of the island on the Odyssey globe with that old map, it's none other than Isle Delfino. That's right, there's a tiny remnant of a reference to Super Mario Sunshine. Even though it doesn't exist in the game, it still exists on the Odyssey's globe, and thus, it's valid for use. Which means that, if you can calculate the scale of Isle Delfino using Mario's height in Super Mario Sunshine, you can use that measurement to measure the size of the entire planet while relying on the relative size of Isle Delfino, and that will help you get a more accurate measurement of the moon.

This would make a good new mario galaxy game lol.
But I was also thinking about this in the game itself. The moon and the "earth" in the games are a lot closer looking than you'd usually see them. Looking at the pictures of earth from our moon, then comparing it to the ones in odyssey, earth is SO much more closer. It's also interesting to note that our moon does not, of course, have an atmosphere or an active core. It means it's dead. The only way it could have an atmosphere or active core is if it was way bigger, big enough to have gravity to contain such an atmosphere. Look at mars for example. Pretty thin atmosphere and a little sister to earth. If mario's moon has an active core, that must mean that pressure and gravity exist enough to make it such, and like i said, gravity enough to hold an atmosphere. I mean, we see people breathing on the moon, the flag on the ship waving from what seems like air, you can even hear the bells and noises from the wedding area, and keep in mind that sound would need a medium to travel through. An active core could also happen by the moon being ripped apart, creating lots of pressure and heat, but with an atmosphere existing it would make sense for the moon to be maybe more than twice the size it is. Putting into consideration that the moon is maybe the size of our modern earth, this would make plenty sense to have an active core and atmosphere. Maybe someone pointed this out already but i thought it was interesting.

    @wisdombeyondyears Před 6 lety +190

Mario Odyssey’s World should be around 11.7 times smaller than Earth.
Now, give me a moment as I’m doing this during a break from studying for finals and the only thing moving me is caffeine.
    First let’s make some assumptions.
    1. The planet’s air density is 15kg/m3 as compared to Earth’s as referenced by Austin’s SCIENCE video.
    2. The planet has equivalent atmospheric composition such as particulates, molecular composition, and atmospheric layers.
    3. It’s Sun is the same temperature as our own.
    4. It’s inhabitants have eyes that view the same visible spectrum as us.
The linchpin of my assumption is Rayleigh Scattering.
Rayleigh scattering is the elastic scattering of electromagnetic radiation by particles smaller than their wavelength. Scattering is heavily wavelength dependent, so shorter wavelengths(blues) are scattered more strongly than longer wavelengths(reds).
It is also heavily dependent on air density and thickness of the atmosphere. The thickness of Earth’s the atmosphere is roughly 100 km or 62 miles as defined by the Kármán Line, about 1.57% of the earths radius. At noon and through most of the day our sky is blue because it is traveling through the 62 miles of 1.275 kg/m3 atmosphere but at sunrise/sunset the light from the sun must travel through more of the total atmosphere and specifically more atmosphere closer to earth where the air density is higher, increasing the scattering further, reddening the light.
Now there are several variables that influence the color of the sky, which is why I made assumptions of the planet’s atmosphere being as our own.
So, including all assumptions and basing my conclusion principally on the atmospheric effects of Rayleigh scattering I start throwing down the digits.
Earths Kármán Line is 100km equaling 1.57% of its radius. Its air density is 1.275 kg/m3. It’s shape is roughly a sphere.
Assuming the Mario planet has an air density of 15, it is 11.76 times denser than earth’s. Assuming density and atmospheric thickness have an inverse relationship to Rayleigh scattering effects we divide our 100km Kármán like of earth to the Mario planet’s times greater density of 11.76 to get a Kármán line of 8.5 km assuming it has proportional layers to earth and if dividing that 8.5 km K-Line by the Earths proportionate K-Line fraction of 1.67% we get a total radius of,
Drumroll please, 541.4 km or a circumference of 3,399.203 km. For reference the Earth’s moon is around 10,921 km. Now, that is not truly feasible as a the planet would not be able to exist. It doesn’t have enough gravity at earth’s density to sustain an atmosphere. Hmmm, coffee break.
Screw it, let’s increase it’s density.
Density is mass/volume. So by increasing mass but keeping volume constant, we can increase the gravity of an object. For earths normal gravity on the Mario planet we’d multiply earth’s density of 5.51g/cm3 to the 11.76 proportionate atmosphere thickness number earlier(Skipping all the conversion explanations) to give us a density of 64.80 g/cm3 would give a planet with suitable mass be habitable.
With as much gold in the games it’s not that hard to believe that the planet has such a high density.
So massive portions of the planet would be Gold and other heavy matter, even Star matter.
If the density is not uniform then it could even explain small differences in gravity throughout the games.

Matpat, I believe I have found the solution to this problem. The real moon is 238,900 miles away from earth. Turning that into feet it is 1,261,392,000 feet away. In the game the earth's area is 230,400 pixels. Taking back to Mario's oringinal pixels he has an area of 208. In former videos you stated that Mario is 5'1. This resulting him to be 48 pixels per foot as of today. Using this number we can find each foot to be 48 pixels. Which means compared with real life the moon is 60,546,816,000 feet away from the earth. My theory is that the Super Mario Odyssey moon is... Drum roll please. 11,467,200 pixel miles away from the Super Mario Odyssey earth. That's my theory. P.s also according to this theory the moons area is 69,818.181818 with the 18's going on forever

I think a good majority of your audience loves the math so we’d love to delve deeper into it. Whether that is a separate video is up to you. I’m personally really curious as to how you did that calculation. Keep up the great content!

I'd love to see the trig work to find the distance of the moon from the earth!
I personally also never really cared much for trigonometry either, but it'd be really interesting to see the numbers in action.

To everyone who doesnt get SOHCAHTOA:
It's an acronym for the formulas.
    *S* in = *O* pposite / *H* ypotenuse.
    *C* osine = *A* djacent / *H* ypotenuse
    *T* angent = *O* pposite / *A* djacent
    Right triangles only.

This is funny cause I already thought about the moon rocks like that! Especially after you’re escaping with Bowser. It literally shows the moon falling apart. Also if Mario’s planet has more gravity than ours, does that mean it is a super earth. Super earths are thought to be more common so...

But couldn't he use the height of the mountain at the beginning and the angle of depression to measure the distance to the horizon using tangent

If assuming the mountain is making a 90 degree angle or you could just measure from the air. I don't have Mario odyssey so someone else could do it.
