Reading To Your Child Does Not Teach Them How to Read

  • Don't get me wrong- reading to your child has SO many benefits, including supporting oral language development. One thing reading to your child will NOT do, however, is teach your little one how to read. The Science of Reading tells us that learning to read requires very intentional instruction and does not happen naturally (no matter what we've been told.)
I wrote more here about the reading research here on my blog, check it out! www.toddlersread.com/blog/rea...

His insight is phenomenal and we need more teachers like him who CLEARLY LOVES WHAT HE DOES!! Also he jumps right into the content and doesn't ever say "like and subscribe". He is focused on reaching people not soliciting them! Great job! New subby here.

Thank you! Unfortunately we have a group in academia that is against phonics, grammar, memorizing addition. subtraction, multiplication and division facts, fractions, measurement, sentence structure, penmanship and reading comprehension. These educators are apart of a deliberate plot to
de-educate Black, Brown and poor white kids. Thank you for telling parents about the SCIENCE of reading. I am a retired HS teacher. I had juniors and seniors that had poor reading skills and their writing was deplorable. It was heartbreaking!

I taught my son reading by 3 years of age. I didn’t learn letter sound myself when I learned English so I had no idea how to teach a kid reading through introducing them to the letter sounds. But what I did was I read to him every day for good two to three hours with a lot of demonstration. I acted, sang, dances, wrote, drew while reading. I saw he was enjoying these reading sessions but I didn’t know that he was actually learning how to read and how to write. He not only learned English he also learned how to read and write Bangla and Arabic because I followed the same method for those two languages too. He was reading books in those languages since he was 3. He’s now 6. My little one who is 2 now knows all the letters of those three languages. I’m doing the exact same thing I did with my older one. My plan was to make them love learning or teach them how to have fun while learning but I had no idea that it would help them in reading and writing. Now my older one is very focused in learning anything. He loves to learn anything which is great but I would like to get more information about whether the method I applied would work for different kids or not.

I’m currently studying to teach, my dream is to teach Kindergarten, and your videos help me so much with feeling more capable as my graduation draws closer. As you said, some parents rely on school to do all of this teaching, so it is really good for me to watch these.

THANK YOU so much for your helpful videos. I'm immensely grateful to have come across your channel. Teaching my 6yo to read has been quite the challenge as she rather memorize and/or make-up stories. She barely puts effort, gives up quickly and just doesnt seem to want to learn to read despite knowing her sounds. Often times she forgets sounds or gets them wrong (mostly intentionally). She hates blending and treats each sound individually. I'm just not sure how I can motivate her. She does better with teachers but they don't really push Kindergarteners to read much. They get read to.
Do you have any tips? Also, do you do online private sessions?

Hi there, way to go helping your daughter. I have 3 courses teaching parents how to teach their little ones, and one specifically on blending. A great place to start for free is my free workshop- I'm in the chat answering questions if you have them. www.toddlersread.com/free-workshop
