- As a former teacher, working 1-on-1 with kids has always been something I love to do. In this video, I'll model how to teach your 4 year old to read and demonstrate some teacher moves that you can use when working with your little ones.

not only is he teaching us how to teach our kids how to read but also how to deal with our attitude and behavior with the children. man so appreciated!!!!
YES! I am so grateful. I know my attitude has made things worse at times. I want to do this right for my grandson. He is so smart, and capable, he can do this, when he has success he can hardly believe it. If I get my part right, he will soar, beyond me, beyond all expectations. The public school is failing to do their job, demanding he do better, take the responsibility.
So beautiful
Super proud our black men and dads.
Exactly!! Thank you so much ❤
I love the fact that you explicitly stated your high expectations for ALL kids. We take away a child’s self-confidence when we don’t give them an opportunity to experience reach goals that they never believed they could do. That’s the natural high of being an educator🤗 Thank you for your ministry👏🏽👏🏽
CZcams randomly recommended this channel and I'm very thankful for that😊😊
Sped preschool teacher of 20 years here. Thank you for putting words to what I'm doing and why it works! Sharing your content with my families and staff. Thank you so much for the way you model and your passion for supporting kiddos and families. You're an excellent teacher.
I teach The Big 6 to small groups (Oral language, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension). I have been using these techniques you describe for 15 years, with great success.
I love watching the students' literacy learning journeys. Sometimes, I see' light bulb' moments. At other times it's a slow dimmer switch turning on. For some students, I need to provide them with an extension cord for the plug to stay in the socket! My dad was a sparky, can you tell?😂
EVERY child, even those with learning disorders, has the capacity to learn. That capacity is dependant upon my teaching and realistic expectations. However, parent involvement in a child's learning journey is absolutely the most critical aspect of success.
It breaks my heart, as well as makes me angry, how many people have such negative perceptions of teachers, externalising the job and forgetting the important role as teacher in the home.
This young man is Awesome
My 4 year old is starting to read because of your videos ❤ Thank you so much!
Thank you for being a fabulous example for us all on how to be a positive influence on our precious children. Thank you for caring!
This was so helpful to see some of the ways you've adjusted to help him focus, reward in the process, and keep him engaged. I am looking forward to trying this out
Thank you- so glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this, how i wish i knew sooner. I have a terrible parenting experience with my 9 year old. Now my 3year old is experiencing this bad time as well. I always struggle to get them to do what i want them to do i get mad and end up hitting and yelling and i swear it breaks my hearts to see them so scared of me.. when i come close to them they run for their lives and hide. I really feel bad. I've always wanted to get help with this, I've been praying asking God to help but it just never stops, im so afraid that my kids will believe that i never loved them or cared about their feelings. I really wish to change my behavior and raise them with the warmest love they deserve 😢💔
Thanks for showing a real lesson with the child, it was very helpful to see you in action. And thanks for all the tips. I have a master's in Music Education, but learned so much from you regarding engaging little ones.
Your approach to teaching is beautiful! I wish all teachers would watch your approach! It’s so impressive how you build the student’s confidence to try. You’re creating a safe place to make errors and guide them to the correct response without tearing down their self esteem! ❤❤❤
You’re a phenomenal teacher. Thank you for sharing with us!
Very helpful! Thank you, I’m a first time mom so this is so valuable

Amazing, planning to try this with my 5 year old, thank you so much 🙏🏾
My son started reading at the age of 3 without being taught. He still goes about his normal life like any other kid.
How old was he when he began taking and was he engaged in lots of conversation perhaps even before this time?
I also do the same with my kid I mean some parts. 😂but i literally try to connect with her in every possible way.so nice job keep going.
I'm a high school graduate and I have a bro who's not 4 yet. Our mom told me it's my job to educate him now- so for someone as clueless as me, this is beautiful.
...your job to educate him?
That is very concerning…
It's not your "job". It's something really nice and appreciated for you to help your sibling, but it's not something that you should feel pressured into doing.
@@walqqr1 I appreciate it, Thanks
@@AJ-hc2jj not exactly my job it's just that I'll be helping him
soooooo helpful, not just for teaching reading. for life.
I learned a lot.❤ Thank you so much
wonderful lesson!!! appreciate it
Such good info. I've learned I need to have my lessons prepped to work right through without me getting distracted by other things or flipping through my lesson books
It’s so helpful! Thank you very much !

Thank you. My son is 4 and I want to teach him to read even if he doesnt go to first grade until he is 6. :)
This is great!! My daughter is 6 in the first grade. She is struggling so very much! Your approach is great. Should I master how to teach her before I introduce her to this? I pray and strongly feel this will work for her.
My free training is a great place to start to help you learn so you can teach her. I also have 3 online courses. Link for free training if you're interested-- www.toddlersread.com/free-workshop

You should be a Teacher 😊
Just came across your channel. This is awesome! Could you share how this works with a classroom? What are the other students doing and how long would you work with them one on one?
Thank you for your response.
Hey there, my focus is helping parents teach their little ones so I don't focus on whole group instruction, sorry!
Do you have a strategy or advice on teaching children who confuse letters like d&b m&w p&q s&z etc.?
I wish i had this years ago for my oldest daughter. Because i think i traumatized her. I had to learn this just last year she is ,8 mow. I had alot of unlearning to do with my daughter. But im glad i did because now i have 2 young ones
Should we teach names of letters first or soundsof letters? Or how to write the letter? Any specific order of those steps?
Sounds first. This helps with how they pronounce words which means they can start practicing it outside of sessions right away. It also helps of you teach them using lowercase letters. This will give them more opportunity to practice, since most letters in our every day lives are lowercase.
Letter names second. This is done with uppercase letters.
Lastly, writing the letters. You don’t want to push writing too early, it is simply not beneficial to the development of our little one’s hands. Have them play rough and use their hands to do more “natural” things that strengthen their hands for as long as possible before starting handwriting exercises.
OMG, Im understanding how deal with my toddler
Skvěle to umí
Is there someplace i can get these phonics cards?
Thank you so much!!! I will use this on my little one… he 3 weeeks+
This guy just saved me..
does this strategy work for older children 8 years old who is easily distracted in all his activities.
Are you related to the Instagram famous librarian Mychal Threets? You two talk very similarly and have similar features.
Hi 👋 I'm indian mom I don't know how to teach him he is 4yr old. I don't want to force because I'm afraid of it'll get mental pressure on him 😒 I don't know what to do
same there
You can use the same method that is showing in the video because he is not putting any pressure on little toddler …..it’s just that u have to learn his direction, statement and question methodology. I know it takes time to learn and apply but with regular practice it can be done…. My son is also 4 years old and facing difficulty in teaching phonics but this video boost my confidence and I have given it a try just after watching it’s first half and I am amazed with the result that it really works man….. thanks a ton to @toddlerscanread
You are my saviour man🙏🏻
I used to teach my daughter to read at 14 months! Make everything a play, add fun and a lot of encouragement and they will ask for the reading sessions!
I have a child whose writing is making me cry what will I do to help him
Is like you have thought him to pronounce the sounds before because I was expecting him to still say the normal alphabet sound like AA=A-eee, not Aaaa, PPP - Piii not pua😅😅😅😅, Z=Zeee, even W he pronounced it so well with will .
Am really amazed please did you get him to pronounce the sounds perfectly like that? Help a Caring mother please 🙏
You can start teaching them to read before they can speak.
I tried to set up markers and my toddler couldn't differentiate when it was time to play versus take a break....any tips for this?
Gotcha; if you're just starting to introduce learning time, they might genuinely just be confused; once the routine is consistent the problem might resolve itself. I recommend starting with only a couple minutes at a time, maybe finding a space that isn't associated with play time. I have a video on here about what to do if your child doesn't want to do the learning time and parts of it might be helpful in this case
When we first started working with our toddler he was only allowed to have the learning things when he was in his high chair. We did learning time after meals usually after breakfest. He always looked forward to his special time in his chair after meals. Now he know the diffefence between playtime and learning time.
I think one of those Pp card may be turned upside down
I can appreciate that you're dedicated to early childhood literacy, and that you have an appropriate that works. However, you don't have to couple that with talking down on other professionals and individuals who are also working with kids. I guess this comment should go on the video you posted about your "story", but I came here because I wanted to see your approach.
In which video did I "talk down on other professionals and individuals who are also working with kids" and what did I say?
My daughter learned to read and spell by the age of 2 and knew the solar system in order at the age 21 months, and knew the powers of ten all the way to a googolplex at the age of 8. We started teaching her as an infant.
men who teach are soooooooo attractive.
Ummmmm, do you do countries?
We need you for world affairs.
Bless you.
Is he learning the color of the card or is he learning the shape?
ABSOLUTELY!!! EVERY CHILD I TAUGHT TO READ WAS READING INDEPENDENTLY BY AGE 3. ACTUALLY, HOLDING A BOOK AND READING OUT LOUD INDEPENDENTLY. THE TIME OF BEGINNING IS WHEN THE CHILD CAN SIT UP IN A CHAIR EVEN AT AGE 8 MONTHS AND BEHOND. THEN THE I USED THE JEANIE ELLER!!! LOVE THIS STRATEGY YOU ARE USING...IT IS AFFECTIVE.
I'm really bad in teaching my 4 year old, also he doesn't listen to me, when I ask him question he screens, laugh, throw him self on fool makes strange noises 😢😢 and sometimes by punching him I ask what number is this he does know the number but tells me something else 😔😔 at that point i had it, I stop, other wise I loose my temper and say you know what number this is don't be smart Alex. So I think it's better if I don't teach him. I have no patience
So instead of asking questions give a command and make sure it is conducive to his learning. For example, if you want to ask 'What is this?' (showing card etc) then perhaps show in 'real form' by pointing at the object. Then you can make connections with the written representation.
Aa😂xx😅is
Children are not dogs. They do not need training! The big question is.. What is the PURPOSE to learn to read at 3 or 4 or 5?? What is it for? REALLY, I wonder. Is it To say that My child is the best, the smartest? Children learn to talk first. With 3, 4 and 5 children are still learning to talk and elaborate Their expressive language.
This may works...
But its TOTALLY unecessary and in my opinion disrespectfull !!! There are a lot more important things to learn that actually kids WANNA learn!! Not "make them do what a adult wants them to do in any means" !!!!
