Great video! Thank you! Just a little bag anatomy: (a) the white rectangle is the air filter, (b) a gusset is the fold in the side of a bag. Some bags don't have gussets.
Glad I seen this before I tried to do my first batch. Nobody else on CZcams that I watched did this method. Great information.
👍
Thank you for making these videos. Yours have been the best I've come across. Thank you so much !!
I am really happy how you explained every step and the products you use.
Here in the netherlands I started with mycelium cakes from the store but I plan on experimenting my next step in spring.
awesome vids dude, really valuable info. I found your channel only recently and will be combing through your whole library in the next few days :D
Great video, great vibration, very informative. I'm a newby to mycology. I have stapped up my game recently with a lab/laminar flow, and a 120x120 grow room. I'm very excited. 8)
that tray with the holes in it (and bolts too) on the bottom of your PC is called a "Trivet"
please always put a dinner plate or another trivet on the top of your towel, that can become a huge bomb
I’ve been using pressure cookers my whole life and I’ve never once heard of putting a trivet on top and bottom to avoid “a bomb”. The trivet is there to protect the product/food being pressure cook/pasteurized from being scalded by the heat source underneath.
Maybe what you are referring to is if a towel is not used you must protect the pressure release pin on the lid from the bags sticking to them. This indeed would create said bomb. A piece of foil would work for this or the towel is fine too.
Love it! Keep up the great work man!
thanks bro!
Best video on Grain Bag preparation yet. Simple and straight to the point.
Towel is brilliant. Exactly what I was looking for
👏 👏 Bravo!! Great video buddy!
One thing to note as well. If you seal those bags up right away after pressure cooking you are insuring 100% sterilization as it will cool down just fine by pressure exchange through the .2 micron filter. Heck Mycolabs, you could make a video of you sealing the bag up properly.
You just saved me a lot of time and frustration ✌🏻
Thank you mate, great info, easy tek!
Get it boiiiiii 🔥
Learned from you and passing on the knowledge! Thanks brother!
Additional safety precaution, place another metal tray on top of the towel. This assures if there is any towel movement, it cannot block anything.
Clean AF
that how i do it!
Bro.....I'm definitely gonna b repeat watching every video you make
Hi mate great vid, thank you. what size and brand pressure cooker do you use?
I like that bolt mod to your insert. Call me Copycat, I’m throwing bolts on mine today 🤙Thanks🤙
Such an upgrade from using jar lid rings! Happy you took that golden nugget home with you!
Any issues with rust? After one run adding bolts it was completely rusted. I want to soak in transmission oil first an wipe clean before next run. Should soak into the metal to kick the rust out some
@@dressedanddepressed2301 use zinc or galvanized bolts
What diameter?
You got a new subscriber brotha!
Gonna try this no boil tek. 😊😊❤❤🥰 thank youu
have fun!
Would love to see one on millet.
You can do millet the same way
Are you using any vinegar in the water to prevent any films or scale on the bags?
Can you do another Tub Talk about how to / the reasons for using liners ! 🙏🏽
yes for sure! ill add it tot my video list!
Thank You this Video.
I love the channel man, big appreciation for it! I wanna ask why do you have tape on your weight for the PC and where did you get your Flow Hood? do u leave it on 24/7 like recommended?
I’ve seen something about a vent and a jiggler on reddit for how to make your Pc quieter but I don’t remember any specifics at all, got any tips for making it quiet? Also I think my gauge may he bunk bc I can’t hit 15psi without my pc beings insanely loud or by putting a skateboard wheel in addition to the 15lb weight
@@jonnychhon1881 its a quarter, weighs it down a bit. flow hood is envirco mac 10 fan filter unit, turn it on for 15 mins before use
The reason for adding a quarter is to bring the psi up because 15 psi for 90 minutes is only recommended at sea level, you need to go up in psi or up in time depending on altitude, from experience I can tell you the quarter makes sure the 15psi for 90 minutes will work at 5,700 feet. My pressure guage reads at about 17-18psi, be careful weighing down your weight with anything else like a skateboard wheel, you need to release pressure or you’ll blow your cooker, I would not worry about making pressure cooker noises lol , If you’re neighbors are ridiculous enough to ask why or what you’re doing you’re cooking beans....
Great video man. Aka trivets
You don't need the towel. If you face the filter patches out, then steam flows out of the bags between the bag and the wall of the PC the same way it would through the towel.
24:59 over and over is funny lmaooo
Information on point ☝️
Lesson learned…I have been filling my bags of substrate to 5 -10 pounds which cut the number that will fill in my pressure cooker to two…I just ran a load in my cooker and would suggest you wait another 2-3 hours before unloading
You seal the bags after you let them sit and cool right?
Thank you ❤️
In the packaging Industry a Gusset is something you would find in a plastic or paper bag. In Plastics bags you could have either a side gusset or a bottom gusset. The Gusset effectively is part of the bag folded back in on itself to give the bag greater carrying volume.
not the filter patch
Im just getting into growing so im gonna use this method my first go. What is your opinion on kits with like pre made bags ect
Premade bags are great to start. Then u can learn to make own bag injection port and filter and get even cheaper
So you heat seal the bags after they cool down ??
I am very curious how you create the supstrate you mix the mycelium in ?!
Nice job
thank you!
Hey MT,
Love your work brother!
Question;
Why 3lbs bags?
Have you considered a pillow case instead of a towel?
Have your grains ever came out too dry?
Can I still use a hot blade too cut thru agar?
Do you recommend rinsing grain before and after soak/boil?
Anyone use a pillow case or have any reason not to?
I never wash after boiling it helps evap the water off the surface of the grain u want the water inside the grain and pillowcases are my go to but I’ve burnt a couple cheap ones and burnt bags so def put a layer under bags
Can I just let the bags cool down inside the pressure cooker over night? Do I have to let them cool in front of hepa?
how long will grain spawn bags last? ive made one and its sat for a year.
So I just made too many grain jars and won’t be able to use them for another week or two , can I store them somehow so they’re still good to use ?
Are proportions and everything the same if I'm using rye?
So you don’t use a heavy plate or something on top of the towel to prevent the pressure release valve from becoming clogged by the towel or a bag as it swells?
Nope.
@@MycoTrophic yea, you know, that question was super dumb lol you obviously didn’t use one as seen in the video.
I think I don’t even need to rephrase as you most likely would have mentioned if you’d had any issues in the past with swelling and clogging the vent.
In any case I’ve been following your insta for some time now and have switched all my tubs over to the method and styles (filter placement and hole size and a couple other things) you use and so far I’m having a wonderful experience ;-)
My issue was always finding the proper balance between RH and FAE and I’d end up removing some or all micropore on the bottom holes (was using many 1/4th holes below and one 2” hole up top) which obviously lets in contambrahs. So I’ve been running em with all 2” holes and the difference in diameter I believed allows more air to pass through the filter efficiently and effectively..as opposed to the same surface area of holes in 1/4th holes...
I really hope that makes sense and I explained properly lol
Anyways thanks man. You’ve helped steer one more super happy myco enthusiast towards even better results!
Awesome video. Add links in the description below
Do you ever experience the bags getting a hole burning into them or getting stuck to the towel after the PC? anyone have advice for how to prevent that?
Is it normal for the rye grain jars to stink after pressure cooking?
So the 6 bags you did are equil to how many qt jars?
Also have you run enough no-simmer Oats through entire grows to feel comfortable with their hydration level? Have you tried no-soak no-simmer where you load the bags with grain and water and pc like that?
still experimenting with the so soak-so simmer method. A few other grower friends and I are refining it.
@@MycoTrophic OoOoh, can't wait! 😀
@@illmannered1 when i get it down ill post a video for sure!!
I do no soak/no simmer with whole oats. 2:1.5 ratio of oats to water by weight. For 32oz jars start with 8oz dry oats to 6 oz water and for bags I've been doing 2 lbs dry oats to 1.5 lb water. Works great. Moisture content is literally perfect. You do need to remove the jars/bags from the PC basically as soon as the cook time is over, and agitate them. You need to redistribute the remaining moisture content. For jars, you can shake then invert for 15 mins, then shake again and put back upright. And they will be perfect. With bags, you need to open them in front of a flow hood (SAB) will not work.
So they self seal , no need to seal them after they finish sterilization?
Can I use a instapot for sterilizing bags?
Can you use the same method for brown rice?
I follow these same process and I've had nothing but success, I actually do millet, oat and sorgham in equal parts and it works great, I make 5 pound bags and it ends up costing me around 3$per 5lb bag
Hey brother, where do you get your bags?
So many options on bags. U can get pre.ade bags with injection port and filter for easy
no issues with the bags expanding and unfolding inside the cooker? I feel like that happens when I put flat underneath like in the video?
@@sadhu7191 only rookies use pre made bags, it’s too easy and a way higher success to do it yourself.
@@andyfromtoystory7426I’m a rookie and still in the process of trying to grow my first batch. Prob I found so far is I put a grow tent out in garage and temps this week are all in the upper 90s. Looks like I’m gonna have to take it all down and move down in basement. Not looking forward to this.
Do the bags seal on their own while they are cooking?
No. You have to take them out in front of a flow hood and seal them. If you want to seal the bags before going into the PC, you need to use 0.5micron filters so the steam can escape without exploding the bags.
Thanks 🔥🌲🔥🍄✌🔥
How did you seal them? I understand every part except that. Did you use a vacuum sealer? Thanks
They have bag sealers online
Just use sealer function of a vacuum sealer if you have one.
Question: do you seal the bags before or after pressure cooking?
after
I did not see you put any water in the pressure cooker. How much water do you put in your pressure cooker to sterilize the substrates?
Instrad of bolts cant i just use mason jar lids at bottom then sit metal divider
Very similar to how I run my oats. Only difference is the prep. I put 9.5 jars of dry grain in a bucket, add boiling water, soak for 45min then strain and bag. My strainer is a mono with tiny holes drilled in the bottom 😂 But perfect amount for six 3lb bags
I like your method!
so did you ever seal your bags?
Hey quick question! Do you do one grain bag per mono tub? If so what volume tub?
I use 3 lb of spawn per 10lb of substrate in a 70qt tub
2 1 pound grain bags can fill regular Walmart tote. 64 quarts or something
I used least amount to be cost effective. 2 pounds substrate and fill rest with pasteurized coco
Wouldn't recommend setting open end of bag down on bottom layer, when they cool they will make a vacuum pres in the bag and suck up water, obviously there would then be too much water in those bags and the mycelium wouldn't grow as perfectly as it could. Other than that great video 👏👍
what are the bucket screens u use called ?
I wonder if you shaped the bags into a triangle (looking from the top down) you might be able to fit more bags.
Pyramids
Do you depressurize immediately after hitting that 2 hour mark, or let it depressurize on its own over several hours? I've been immediately depressurizing, but it's quite an event. I an using no soak/no simmer tek which is working great, but I need to get the bags out immediately, and shake them up to more evenly distribute moisture.
Because a pressure cooker is under pressure water boils at temperatures higher then the normal 212 degrees F. When you release pressure while its still hot from cooking it exposes grain that is well above above 212 degrees to atmospheric pressure. This will flash boil the grain. You do not want this. Its necessary to wait for the pressure cooker to cool down before opening. If your gauge falls to 0 while naturally cooling then you are good to open.
@@danfromcarniculture943 I have done this both ways, and now actually take the PC outside, and take the weight off it. Letting it depressurize rapidly. Now, I also have spacers under my trivet so the grains never directly contact the boiling water. I found the moisture content to come out better doing it this way.
“this is to basically lock out the pressure.” 🤣
That mechanism is to prevent you from opening the pressure cooker while it’s under pressure. Doing so would be a life changing event. You can force it up to speed things along. Once you see it bouncing and bubbling you can lift it and it should stick. It might save you 10 minutes overall.
You don't want to lift it because then you're trapping a bunch of air (which displaces steam) which will take HOURS to leak out through the weight vent.
What psi do I pressure cook on
Do you think the towel adds to your cook time? I missed how long you said you let it run for, if you did say it
I mentioned a 2 hour PC :) and the towel is primarily for maintaining a clean bag seal and to prevent the bags from warping.
@@MycoTrophic ok 2 hrs is what I do. I just thought the towel might slow down the heat getting to the center of the bags but I suppose with it being wet that extra time is negligible
@@MycoTrophic hell yeah..about a few months ago I started cooking tn jars for 2-215 and my bags for 3-315 hours.
@@killerkennyas Three hours is a long pressure cook! Super sterile though LOL. Thanks for the feedback!
@@MycoTrophic yeah i started ed watching gourmet farms cook times and before was getting intermittent contamination..plus I have 4.5 pound bags,4 per 23quart..now out of 100 bags I might get 1 contaminate..bit that's probably from me being sloppy
I wish the description just had the deets.. I watched it and cut back around... Im half asleep so could you just clarify. 9 quarts of oats into how much water does it even matter? And do you use gypsum and how much. Other then that where's your injection ports.
My bags expand massively in the cooker? I rolled them tight once but the bags exploded
What is the lining bag made of ?
Anyone have a link for the mesh bags? He mentioned he would link. But I don’t see it
paint strainer bags, amazon affiliates deleted my page smh
Have you ever had problems with those oats being non-organic? I thought they could be sprayed with things that killed funguses
I know Oster mushrooms loves car oil
What are those bags called and where can I buy them ?
Amazon. Grain spawn bags
hey man have you done a video of you injecting these?
Did they bags seal from pressure cooking or did I miss a step?
I was wondering that too
Im still wondering that hopefully replys
@@neinname8500 I found out recently that no it doesn’t seal it it only pulls the air out once cooled down. You need impulse sealer to do that, but luckily their no to expensive.
@@lysergicaciddiethylamide6127 Thanks for reply, theres bags with not only air filters but also injection ports, are these ports needed for injecting with spore syringes ?
@@neinname8500 I’ve never used the injection ports bags I just put two pieces of micropore tape over my injection spots with good success. Just make sure your flame sterilizing and spraying the bags with iso before.
Where do you get the bags??
did you explain why you use the towel?
You can get rye berries from a farmer for 15 bucks a bushel here in Canada
It's been 4 days and I'm not seeing any white stuff growing. What do I do. Keep waiting?
Could you also apply this method to rye berries? The strictly soak & no boil specifically
yes of course, although it may require different soak times for rye berries, they do seem to expand more during the soak.
Do the grains contain the hull or just the kernal?
With Hull, full grain.
So where do you inject the bag with the spore syringes?
Anywhere you want. Tape after injection. OR put a bump of RTV on side as a self sealing port.
Was it at 15 psi?
Hey! Thanks for all the great tutorials:) I’m not seeing the link for those straining bags you use to drain the water from the grains. Sorry if I missed it:/
Be well:)
YT took my links down:/
5 gal Paint strainer bags u can find em at almost any hardware store! :)
The towel isn’t necessary. The towel prevents the bags from swelling up and opening or blocking the pressure cooker release. A secondary plate on top, the same as the bottom plate with a weight on top will sandwich the bags and prevent this same problem. The plastic bags shouldn’t melt touching the side of the pressure cooker, I’ve never had this happen ever. However the filter will melt so placing the filter towards the Center is correct.
You are opening your cooker in front of the flow hood which is great, however if this isn’t practical (flow hood too small), then you will have another problem. The bags will suck air into them as they cool down. This will pull in contam. Three solutions are, open in front of flow hood. Or wait 24 hours until bags are completely cool, this is worst option. Or place a piece of roughly 6x4” tyvek into the mouth of the bag blocking the opening before wrapping the the bags. This will filter out any contam during the cool down period while transferring the bags from cooker to in front of the flow hood. The tyvek should extend the opening of the bag with a tongue sticking out and about 6” into the bag. And across the bag from the gusset to gusset(the part where the plastic is doubled up along each side.) The plastic gussets down the sides of the bag will seal and the tyvek will give air the path of least resistance while filtering out contam. However simply opening the pressure cooker in front of the flow hood solves all these issues if you have a large enough flow hood.
Awesome videos man best content creator I’ve seen
Have you hear of using an iso soaked towel over inlet hole? I remove my bags immediately because I'm using no soak/no simmer tek, but I had heard of this towel approach. Wondered if anyone used it.
How do you make homemade spore syringe without agar,is it possible
Yes it is.
What size pressure cooker is that?
its a 23 quart. Presto makes one thats pretty inexpensive
Where do you get your grain?
Tractor supply co
Where are the product links you spoke of?

I use the same oats bro
they work wonders!
@@MycoTrophic I did popcorn and the mycelium seems to love the popcorn

Me too!! Tractor Supply.. Lol
Only melted 6 grain bags before I found this video 🎉
How do you seal them after they pressure cook? I've read so many different approaches, a sealer, an iron, a hair straightener, tape, a safety pin lol. How should I seal them and when?
Will this process work for rye berries? I’ve always boiled them and would love to eliminate it, if possible. EDIT: I see this question has already been asked & answered!
I’d say always do the last minute boil after a 12-14 hour soak. That soaking window allows bad spores to have time to germinate so then you hit them with that final boil to kill most of them off before you pressure cook. Then that finishes the job 😎🤙🏼🖤
Going to bed to 😆
Thanks awesome video. Next time I make a tub I'm gonna try making my own grain and substrate. I watched the substrate video also 👌
Don’t skip the bolts on the canning rack. Very important. If you don’t, you won’t be able to get enough water in to steam for 2 hours and you’ll burn the bag.
Hi! I have been wanting to do this method for my presto as well but I’m wondering if the sizing he mentions is just for the length or the diameter? Can anyone specify which size work best for the modification?
@@isabellamuller6326 personally I use 1/4 diameter bolts with a length of about 1 3/4 inch.
Cant you just put lids or something else to raise it though
@@the__grow__life8211 yes you can.
You can't just stick pieces of metal into a pressure cooker willy-nilly. The heat and pressure causes different kinds of metal to interact chemically in very bad ways. That's why you see people putting canning lids in the cooker to keep things separated, whatever metal they're made out of is safe.
You didn’t link the bag you used?
