Tub Talk Ep. 1: Substate Depth/Colonization/When & How To Initiate Fruiting Conditions

  • Hey Myco Family! In this video I go on somewhat of a rant / riff about a few key topics and factors that I consider for FULL and THICK first flushes. The three we are discussing today are; Substate Depth, Colonization, and How + When to initiate fruiting conditions. Considering there are quite a bit of variables and topics on this subject, I decided to dedicate a whole playlist and series to "TUB TALK" where we can really get into the fine details of maintaining proper tub/ growing conditions during the life cycle of your colonizing/ colonized/ fruiting substate.

    I’m glad that you mentioned that you should think like a mushroom. Being a person that fishes and hunts avidly I always tell people the best results are gonna come when you think the way of fish or your prey does. You’re truly a great instructor and if you’re not a professor or a teacher by trade, I think you missed your calling.

    My grains are almost 100% colonized. My substrate ingredients should be here in 4 days and just in time since my grain will be ready to go by then. This is my first round of growing mushrooms and I successfully inoculated and colonized my different grain spawn mediums used. I’m very excited to get to this part and hopefully have a harvest in a few weeks. Videos like this have helped me so much as a newbie. I appreciate your videos. ❤

  • @QuabmasM
    @QuabmasM Před rokem +121

    Ive found that more air exchange both in colonizing grain & substrate is helpful as long as its filtered. That exchange allows the mycelium to grow so much faster & tend to grow near the exchange vs the opposite areas if those areas are being suffocated. My inoculation ports on my bags seldom have the most mycelium but rather the area closest to the exchange.
    I think the mushroom community is full of many stoners who regurgitate & echo each other religiously w/o understanding jack & nor having eyes to see & make sense of truths that contradict the doctrines they swear by as to fit in. That said, Ive come to realize better air exchange = faster colonization however you still want to avoid free air doing as it pleases to avoid contamination.
    Ive also learned that slightly funky smells during colonization of the substrate are not such a bad thing as some people echo. So much air is allowed to remain in a bulk sized tote that its more likely to carry a slight funk as the mycelium is growing & pissing in a pasteurized substrate that isnt 100% sterile.
    Catching the slight wiff of it is usually ok & will vanish as the cake becomes even more mycelium filled THANKS to air exchange. Its actually a good idea to open the lid after 7 days & give it a chance to expel that funk & start fresh especially if you noticed the mycelium growing slower after about 4-5 days which is usually when that gas builds up. Its not mandatory but again, it speeds up the process.
    The biggest thing missing from the mush community is spore consciousness. People teach it but they teach it as a small subtitle in the 90% main theme of their messages & insights when it should really be the FIRST & MAJOR thing people learn(how invisible spores are floating everywhere & are the reason why we do ABC to avoid XYZ).
    So much of this growing has become a religion rather than an actual UNDERSTANDING of whats happens so that we can consciously "break the rules" safely rather than following them in vain due to complete ignorance of their purpose. Its like watching something at subway ring you up on the cash register using the same gloves theyre about to serve the next person w/...
    ....makes 0% sense & they are clearly too dumb to understand why theyre wearing gloves. Better they break the rule & make your food w/ clean hands than make your food w/ dirty gloves....your food being clean is the goal, not their hands....but what can you expect from typical stoner culture who migrate to mushroom culture? F-ck-ry, thats what. lol

      Brilliant observations! Makes sense. I will test out FAE idea on my spawn jars soon. Should be easy enough since all I have to do is add 1, 2, then 3 filtered holes into mason jar lid then for a 4th I can use a full filter top lid. Inoculate them all, then let the race begin!

    Dude, u literally saved my sanity, THANKYOU!! I started learning and giving it a go in late Feb. and my first tub I did didn’t do well surprisingly. I know, go figure right? J/k but I was able to grow some small mushrooms, maybe around 20 in all which equaled out to like 3 grams wet, so not a lot. Well, after my second go I got nothing, not even 1 mushroom. I didn’t know why they weren’t forming, my mycelium looked healthy with no contamination, so I thought to just give it time. I had that tub for almost 2 months trying to keep it going without it ever seeing a single pin form. I was lost, but then I watched your video. I wasn’t making my substrate cake thick enough or using enough spawn. Before it was maybe 1 inch thick so that’s why I had no mushrooms. Sorry for going on about it but your video helped me understand a lot of how everything has to be in harmony to create the right kind of “atmosphere”? for fruits to grow. Thanks a lot bro, Peace.

This caused some contamination in my cake that I cut out. Pins are starting to come out but the cake was fighting to do it’s thing. Still going to produce some but by no means a high yield. Good leaning experience on what not to do and on my next grow after watching this video should be a heck of a lot better!

    I was worried that the condensation from my humidifier was too much. I think I’m good. Thanks. 👍🏽

    Thanks it's very informative. There are so many methods out there I got confused sometimes. I've got a tub and a bucket, drill bucket with holes at the side and the base. but then I realized that two many holes gave me more pins but less flushes. There are enough substrates in my 10L bucket, and I put bucket into bigger tub for a better environment. just left a tiny gap on top for air exchange since I don't want to damage my beautiful tub with big holes. So far I only got 3-4 small flushes, rests are small pins, will see

    Hey man just wanted to let you know .... GREAT WORK 👍 and thank you for allowing us all to learn and colonize together to be a great community/first timers/medical patients also a question of course... here it is Can you have too much colonized grainspawn in your substrate to cause issues like they can suck all the water and cause it to not initiate pinning or something

    Loved your comment remember when you introduce FAE you lower temperature of surface because evaporation cools.
