    This reminded me of something that happened to me in college. I joined an anime club my freshman year, and was a member for my entire college career. It was my sophmore year there and a bunch of us were chatting in the dining hall. One of the guys asks me if I'd seen a certain anime (I don't remember the name). I said I hadn't. He asked me about another one. I hadn't seen that one either. So now he looks at me, with this stupid judgemental expression, and says "oh, I guess you don't watch anime much then?"
    ...
    Are you shitting me?
    I don't know 2 anime out of the thousands that exist, and that means I don't watch anime? Mind you, every weekend the club gets together to watch an anime and I rarely miss it, and we regularly discuss anime during club meetings, many of which I am vocal in. So, ignoring all of this, because I haven't seen these 2 anime, I must not watch anime.
    Then he made it worse, because when I expressed to him that I did watch anime, just not those 2, he then asked me to name 10 anime I had seen, like I had to prove myself before he would accept me as an anime fan. At that point, someone else in the club got on his case and he got all huffy and left. Even after that though, he'd make really snarky comments about me. If I was chatting with someone and they asked me if I had seen something, he'd jump in and say that I probably hadn't seen it "because I don't really watch anime". It got to the point where some newer club members treated me as though I had only just discovered anime and hadn't been watching since middle school. When I would make really in deoth comments, people would react with shock and express that they hadn't thought I had seen that anime. It was so frustrating.

      Ugh I hate people like that. I was the president for my school's anime club in my senior year as I was the only senior in the club at the time (and the teacher wanted the president to be a senior) and I have anxiety and depression so it made it hard for me to try and get people's attention during meetings and take charge of certain tasks and such, which resulted in 2 or 3 people (I don't remember the exact number) thinking I didn't know much about anime and that I shouldn't be president. Like, in the end I did do a decent job as president as I did think of fun games to play in the club and I did make a Kahoot game full of anime trivia so in the end they realized that I did know a lot about anime.

      I dived into action, fantasy, shounen, some shoujo, some slice of life, some drama and romance.
      And although I couldn't talk about stuff like Hyouka and corpse party we had some pretty good discussions about shows we both watched.

    What I find frustrating about the article is how hypocritical and contradictory many of his statements where , you just like pointed out .. I not apart of any community like messenger board or reddit . So I haven’t had any discussion about anime .I admit I used to be bit to sensitive in general to opinions . If somebody tell’s me that they don’t like some thing I like , I question myself “ do I have bad taste/judgement “? But I have also realized that having different opinions make for a great conversation like you stated in last part of the video. If everybody had the same opinion , then it would be boring . I admit I’m not very good at expressing my opinions and do that I would feel timid around people that argue “ what !! , you like this x anime !? Lol “. You made a good point in one video that just because someone doesn’t like the same anime , should’ be taken personally because it doesn’t mean that you have bad taste/ or that you are a terrible human being lol. I agree that also most people started out with main stream anime like Naruto , Attack Titian , Pokémon etc . It because it mostly accessible BECAUSE It is popular . Instead of making fun an person that hasn’t seen obscure anime , then INTRODUCE them to. I think Naruto and other know anime is nice way to get into anime. That’s how I got into anime ( okay the first anime was Chobits and Fruit Basket , but you get my point). Or at worse, they engage in violence to drive people away (I'm not even kidding) and then the same elitist complain that "everyone loves crap" or "I have no one to talk about the things I love" when they're the first to drive people away by being pedantic, toxic and assholes. so, yeah don't be an elitist love whatever you want, be open to other opinions and share the experience. I also don't think it hit me fully that Toonami was Japanese anime until I began to also watch anime on Adult Swim. Toonami's DBZ (the main show I watched on the program) stripped all the Japanese songs and replaced them with English ones which made it harder to realize it came from another country. Adult Swim though kept the original openings and closings, making it easier to finally come to terms that this glorious animation and storytelling...unfortunately belonged to a country "across the pond".

      Yeah, low key the anime man (and many anitubers in general) get very hypocritical. For example, in his video where he roasted people on their anime list (MAL), at the beginning of that video he literally said “You’re allowed to like and dislike whatever you want.” One minute in, he sees someone give Fairy Tail a 10 and says “Aw, bro your taste is shit.”
      What!? Didn’t you literally just fucking say that we’re allowed to like and dislike whatever we want, only for you to then completely turn around and insult people for genuinely enjoying an anime that you think is not good, and label those people’s taste as “shit?” That’s almost exhibiting a superiority complex among your audience and exposing your bigotry.
      The problem isn’t him liking or disliking the anime. The problem is his hypocrisy and behavior in which he expresses how he feels about those people’s opinions. That right there is why I can’t truly respect his opinions and just respect him as a person, when he’s going to be a hypocrite and insult other people’s opinions.
      And you could only imagine how that’s going to influence the people that are watching him (considering the fact that he’s basically the most popular anituber), and how they’re now going to think *Oh, well if the anime man and all these anitubers say the same thing about this anime, then I guess it’s true.* It’s very immature and downright hypocritical in my opinion.

    The coolest type of enthusiast is one that is inviting. Especially to people who are new to it who show some interest but only know the entry level most popular stuff. They have no idea what the medium has to offer and it's the nicest thing ever when someone more experienced chooses to show them the way in an unassuming, welcoming fashion.
    When you try to shut someone down for liking something they enjoy, that will never convince them they are wrong, or that you are cool or smart. All it might do, if it influences the other person at all, is keep them from wanting to further engage in the community or the topic at hand in any capacity because it's unwelcoming and toxic to share their honest opinions.
    Thinking that you're better than anyone else for your own preferences is a sign of insecurity and overinflated ego, and in general a complete lack of understanding of the subjectivity of personal opinion. Being inviting and enthusiastic about your interests is a great way to make friends who you can nerd out with about your favorite stuff. Everyone wins when we include each other instead of being snarky elitist.
    Anime isn't "your" thing. It's for everyone who is willing to give it a try. Be happy you're not alone and that there is a community to engage with in the first place.

      @Internal Monster Because you'll end up having to watch at least 1 episode of a series which you won't like at all for many different reasons. You might not even like the genre and click on it. How I find new anime is usually through anime recommendations of my friends, youtubers and through MyAnimeList, just searching the top 1000 for series I might like.
      So far there has been like 1 to 6 animes I didn't like using this method (I say 1 to 6 because one was absolute garbage (School Days) while the others just didn't fit my tastes) out of about 130 animes watched.
      I really don't think that clicking random is a good option like 80% of the time unless you enjoy pretty much anything.

      First: I love your username.
      & Second.... Did you hear any opening intros while *IN* the womb? That's pretty hardcore. Sadly, I only discovered anime around 11 or 12. (I'm 26 years old now.) But my -overprotective- *paranoid* parents were against Pokemon when it first came out... Cause "OMGZ POCKETDEMONS!" -__-
      I find it ironic though that my first two anime were Vandread & Ai Yori Aoshi. Two very fanservice-y, funny but inappropriate faceplant-in-boobs with-dramatic-sexual-tension, harem anime.
      Vandread = ALL THE BEWBS. Cause men haven't seen women in 100's of years and think "Women are monsters. And men were once used as their playthings" (Cause history books apparently never happened and men and women had their own planets.) But three guys get taken prisoner by lady pirates. Main character being a hilarious yet unfortunate-timed-moments type, and more than often faceplants in boobs, or is too curious upon first seeing scantily clad lady's butt: "What IS this?" and poking said lady's butt only to be slapped in return.
      The irony on Vandread is that my MOM found it and said it looked interesting. So I had all the fanservice, drama and _totally age appropriate_ humor, but ... *"NO POKEMON IT"S EVIL"*
      I'm watching Indigo League now since I've seen some of the newer ones, but wanted to see Pikachu and Ash first meeting and Pikachu being a dick to Ash. But yeah. I got the rated Teen to Mature level fanservice when I was 12, but no Pokemon. Seems appropriate, am I right?
      ..Apologies for the wall of text. But that's my anime story. xD
      I love a bunch of genres and varieties of anime now. I have collected a bunch of series throughout the years. I both finished and loved Ai Yori Aoshi & Fan... _ahem_ Vandread. And bought the DVD box sets when the only video rental store with anime was closed down.

She would always turn her nose up at anime that I found entertaining and enjoyed and wouldn't let me have my opinion on who I preferred who in the series. It had to be her way or the high way and that's why I would get so pissed off at her and at one point I wanted to stop being friends with her because of her shitty personality when it came to the shows that I liked (yes, I'm a fujoshi when I shipped two guys instead of her favorite girl character and one of the guys from my ship, she would get pissed and try to force her opinion on me, it was extremely irritating and made me want to slap her since I never dissed anything she liked. She just didn't like the fact that I didn't agree with her)

    Joey and fellow anime fans, I would like to share a thought about objective reviews and elitism.
    If you really think about it, and I mean actually think about it, "objective" reviews are really just well thought out opinions, meaning they are still subjective and personal pertaining to the one person posting and it might be shared by others. Simply put, "objective" is code for a complicated subjective opinion and there's no reason to believe anything that is said by any critic to be true. So with this mindset, any kind of elitism is now a dead and meaningless spot on the Internet.

    • @Mani_Katti
      @Mani_Katti Před 6 lety +10

      A good reviewer/critique tries to stay neutral in the actual judgement department.
      They will also give their own opinion at the end usually.
      Because there are definitely aspects which can be judged "objectively". In other words where everyone would agree on.
      An example would be that an battle OST in Bleach wouldn't fit a sad death of a major character.
      Plus reviews are obviously more focused on the overall quality. Many don't include the entertainment factor which is why I have to agree with you on this part:
      Reviews aren't there to tell you if you should watch/like something but to get a general idea of the overall quality of a product.
      I was dead tired as I wrote this, so if I didn't make sense somwhere feel free to insult me.

    • @zackdevro5192
      @zackdevro5192 Před 6 lety +2

      Tetsu Baer It's a yes from me on the first part in saying that if for instance an aggressive music track that sounds like it belongs in a fight scene doesn't belong at someone's death scene is totally right. It should definitely be critiqued by a reviewer, but on the off chance that that particular moment was liked by someone, then it shouldn't be judged too harshly in the review and be kept in a neutral state. Being neutral is really hard though when it comes to anime, since there are older anime out there or maybe some of the more unpopular and hated choices to stay ultimately neutral on.

    • @silviag3798
      @silviag3798 Před 6 lety +3

      'objective' implies that it's based on observable fact or can be compared to a generally accepted reference value, to borrow some science jargon. Basically it means that any observer looking at the anime would see the same thing. 'subjective' implies that what you see changes depending on factors not based on tangibles. So it would be objective to say that a series uses such- and- such style of animation. But it would be subjective to say that using said style makes the anime more popular/enjoyable/romantic/whatever. So 'objective' implies something more than just a complicated subjective opinion.

    • @zackdevro5192
      @zackdevro5192 Před 6 lety

      SGN gmail Yes, I totally agree. My original comment was more about objectivity being brought together with the elites who have "superior" opinions and them acting like we should listen to what they have to say. They twist the definition of objective and make it seem like their opinion is something we should put on a pedestal and study, like a work of art in a museum. Granted, there are definitely things you can grade objectively, but for the most part I view them as systematic subjective opinions since you can put personal in-depth analysis into it. (Meaning that it is you who holds this view on a certain point) An example: One person can say "This anime's story is phenomenal, I love it." in a very well written objective analysis and a reader who saw this post and the anime that they are mentioning might disagree with the post and write their own objective analysis stating, "This one moment is great and all, but there seems to be an overlooked plot hole." Or something along those lines.
      (So you can see that objective is sometimes blurred with subjective opinions, meaning people mix up the definition and it messes with what a reader might be looking for)
      To conclude, I believe that opinions that hold objective value are welcomed, but it's also great to read about someone else's view on the wide spectrum of opinions a certain topic could have.

    • @zackdevro5192
      @zackdevro5192 Před 6 lety

      SGN gmail "a generally accepted reference value"
      So if I am not mistaken, part of the definition of "objective" implies something subjective has to be determined in order for it to work. In the scale of things, subjectivity is the more important opinion; whether we're talking about a whole community or one person, the people make it count the most. And since there are so many people in the world, we can all have different tastes and opinions.

I found an elitist in an top 10 something anime list that said the fruit of grisaia should be on that list and anyonme who hasn't seen the show isn't a real anime fan. Thanks to this vid i remembered it and can say for certain that I actually came across an anime elitist and survived.

    "judge anime by its synopsis, not by what other people think of it" is what i have found to be a more unbiased way of watching anime. If you look at other's opinions and base yours on that then you're subconsciously going into that anime without an open mind. At this rate, you start looking for flaws and over react every time you see something which was pointed out by the reviews you read earlier. You'll also start ignoring the positives of that series to some extent and usually not enjoy it as much. And to all anime fans out there, here are a few points of advice before you start shoving your opinion down other peoples' throats and telling them the classic "you're favourite anime is shit!" bs.
    1. It doesn't matter how many anime series you have watched, your love for anime should NEVER be measured by that.
    2. Each and every individual is entitled to their own opinion and you have absolutely no right to tell them otherwise. I'm not saying you can't voice your opinion, but trying to get above by pushing everyone else down is just downright wrong.
    3. People like what they like and you don't have to like what the majority of people like. Yo don't have to be a fan of Naruto, Bleach or One Piece but that doesn't mean that you look down upon those who do like those series. The same goes for anyone who doesn't like less well known series.
    I am sick of hearing people complain like 5 year olds about this kind of crap. I don't expect everyone to be friends but you ain't gotta be at each others' throats 24/7. (and no, my occupation is not that of a teacher).

      I didn't like the first episode of shingeki no kyojin but then one of my friends was gushing about it so I gave it a second chance. Still don't really like it but it's got some good points to it.
      So I mainly listen to someone's opinion in order to give an anime a second chance.

      thats true I won't hate an anime because a random asshole on the web raged about it I always watch a few parts of it on youtube and read the synopsis before watching and even after watching I ignore totally review I only read them or watch them when I'm bored and I think that "objectivity" for a review is a bullshit concept for me a review is just a random opinion nothing more but I hate elitism people that judge fans are the most annoying *cough* dxfan619 subscriber *cough*

      To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenevs Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

Seriously, from the musical theorists to the casual "I like Taylor Swift because she gets me" fans.....music elitism has been around before anime was even a fucking thing. Like.....ancient times.

    This Video is already kinda on the older side for taking part in comment discussions, but I want to leave my two cents anyways since I somehow overlooked it until now.
    I think most people would consider me a rather experienced person in the field considering the amount of novels,Manga and Anime
    I consumed ever since I grew up with Sailor Moon, Eva and so on. I'm binge watching all kinds of Anime every day to a degree where I have
    to admit that I really have a hard time remembering even the titles for more then two weeks at best unless it's something
    I really like, think has some outstanding trait or has more than 12 episodes to make it more memorable, keeping me busy.
    Therefore, you might be able to guess I really like Anime and all the stuff this "elitist or not guy" mentioned.....I watched all that stuff as well and I honestly believe that
    there are shows which have much more dept, better animation, better story telling, better character development, more complex and well thought out plots etc.
    than for example a show like Naruto. That's because Naruto had a certain budget for each episode and was created with the intention to be appealing to a certain audience.
    Of course that's no excuse for it's many weaknesses. However, despite knowing all that I still watch my favourite episodes now and then, simply because it's fun and because
    some fights still get me all pumped up, even though I've seen them probably a 100 times.
    What I want to say is that you can be totally addicted to battle shounen stuff without any requirements toward the audiences' intelligence, while also watching and appreciating
    shows like LOTGH. I'm always hyped for this battle&magic stuff, isekai? Count me in!
    Does it mean I don't know about the weaknesses these shows have? No........
    Does it mean I watch nothing else? Hell no......
    Just like many others I'm watching this stuff because it might look awesome or because the action heavy parts make it hard to even sit still
    due to the excitement and immersion in the show. That's something I would never get from a "seemingly higher quality show".
    Therefore, i think these shows are very valuable to me, while these "better shows" make me enjoy them on a totally different level.
    Besides, the "dumb casuals with their dumb shows" are making Anime popular all over the world, giving "us experienced superior elitists"
    the chance to get our "high quality niche stuff" because the industry makes enough money and reaches enough people to make it possible to
    produce such Anime in the first place.
    Well that comment got really longwinded, sry guys. Whatever.....just do everyone a favor and don't look down on ppl for their taste alone.
    Be nice, try to educate new people by introducing the "better" stuff to others but don't be a bitch. Even if they are fanboys who are unwilling
    to accept the weaknesses of "their" franchise, let them be. Tell them your opinion and don't hate cause that won't change their mind either. Rather promote other
    shows you might think are good and make them fanboys of your stuff. That makes for a bigger audience and gives you the chance to get more of the "good stuff" in the future.
    Ok that's it I guess. Hope I got my point across despite not being a native english speaker, really got a wall of text there. :D
