Despite the fact that all the characters are very well made and fleshed out, some ultra realistic anime are still trash. The cool thing, though, is that not only do you get to be the protagonist, you're also the writer.

Honestly, the anime version of Japanese high schools are more similar to American public schools (Well, most) in terms of dressing how you want, died hair and piercings, crazy ass clubs, student council having a lot of power, and etc. Shoot, some even have unofficial clubs based around fighting (when people catch hands in the cafeteria lol)

There are some American schools where they do wear uniforms. My town never required them before until they built this new school. The only uniform we would wear are for PE.

I haven't encountered anyone here in America who wants to be in the school building when they don't have to be.
And yes, that includes those who actually enjoy academics.
In Japan people often stay in class for some time after the lessons cuz, in particular in big cities, they often live far one from each other, so thy can enjoy one other company while doing things like playing on their phone or so. They also stay there before club activies.
In America and Europe we don't have much clubs and people usually hae most of their friends outside of school so they just leave class as soon as they can. The image of "school = prison" is really strong in Europa and America.

Back win chat rooms were a thing I talked to this girl from another country who thought all americans did was have sex and shoot everything. She figured that's how it was because the only American culture she was ever exposed to was movies. I had to explain to her that movies and tv shows are American fantasy, not American reality.
I won't deny that here in America, gun culture is quite a real thing. As for sex, I don't know how it compares to other countries but people is definitely fairly open about the subject. But that stuff is over exaggerated in entertainment.
I also see a lot of fairly accurate portrayal of Asian culture in anime although exaggerated and dramatized. I am born in Asia so a lot of the stuff I see in anime is unrealistic but not as what some people say they are. But it still have its roots in the culture.

I've always heard that watching Anime is not really a good way to practice listening to Japanese, but other than overly hammy performances I can't determine exactly why.
Dude in every media you have it and the reasons are:
1. to make it simple for translation for most of the world
2. to make the character sound smart/ dramatic while being tied up by the first and third reason.
3. flow of dialogue to keep the viewerd entertained.

the roof top being locked in real life makes even more sense. Like the "protagonist" found a way to get there or something and that explains why he is the only student there
This is a plot point in Watamote when Tomoko finds a key to the roof that someone has dropped.
In many animes they sometimes mention that the rooftop is off limits and only the guys that can't give two fucks about rules are up there.
Even if the rooftop *was* open, you'd never be alone up there.

As a person with that has issues with test anxiety when I learned early on with Sailor Moon how test oriented schools were in Japan I was like grateful to not be going to school in Japan. I think manga/anime creators do make high school more exciting because of the dull reality. It also makes sense that a lot of anime take place in middle school/high school if the main demographic is teenagers.
Also, thanks for pointing out that the students having access to the roof is just an anime thing, I always found it odd that students would actually be allowed up there with no supervision. It just must be an ideal place for creators to have characters off on their own for characters to be to themselves.

in showa era rooftops was open for student for a few school, but after the number of suicide on rooftops make rooftops are directly close from student in heisei era until now

So, what i see is that Anime High schools are more like High schools in the West (Europe) then actually japanese high schools...huh
-we had no rooftops which were built... you probably leave if you had lunch and went to the next supermarket lol but we had a few discussions if we should make the rooftops nice and all that... yeah no, everybody wants them but nobody wants to work on them ;)
-I had by graduation somebody who skipped 3 classes and was 15... also i knew someone who went with 17 to university for studying...so its more common in the west
-We had an actual student councils with a lot authority who raise money, were the first person to talk to if problems accured, organized (like really with budget and stuff and money raising) events and then we had our "political" student council which went to discussions (in parlaments) with other schools to debate with politicians what they want for school (no bs) :I and other issues (example: we included the hours a student misses classes (also noted if pardoned and dont) in his final school diplom for various reasons)
-You probably live in the west and know that everybody dresses like he/she wants and can wear everything so... idk, Punks who have like rainbow hair and discuss the falling middle class in politic classes are nothing special
-never got a love letter :/ only from people who wants my money :(
-you could have an after school club about anything... but literally nobody would join you or if, they would say "lets meet after school somewhere and do...x"
