    I appreciate this video so much. I completed my driver side first because I knew that's where my leak was. Just looking at that passenger side which isn't leaking, makes me want to throw in the towel.😅😅

    Good video. Good to see a visual to see just what a real PITA it is to change the valve cover gaskets on a G-body Cutlass with a 307.

    Just did this on a 1990 Cadillac broham, nightmare job. I didn't use a punch or silicone, I tucked the gasket in with my fingers after setting the gasket on the head then putting the valve cover over top of it. Also used a pick to align the holes. Anytime I've used silicone on rubber gaskets they leak. Learned that as an independent/dealer tech.

      So did the No silicone job work? I’m asking because after 3 attempts with permatex my cover is still leaking and I’m about over it

      @@lauedbeatz5655 yes it did. just a nightmare to do, I laid the gasket on the head. then slipped the valve cover it, worked it with my fingers and a pick to line up the holes. you may have to buff down the surface of the head some to get it super clean .

      @@justinyoungstown ok I’m gonna try this after I scrape a .25” of gasket maker off the cover lol I’m also using rubber gaskets just fyi. @@lauedbeatz5655 u sure it is not old oil leaking/ burning off? ur taking where the slinky looking things attaches to the exhaust? could be old excess oil. I've learned over the years to never use silicone on rubber. had a few good leaks from doing so. even a master gm tech I work with now and these cars where in his prime said don't as well. but to each his own.

      @@justinyoungstown i don’t think so. It was leaking from the bottom middle area for a couple days then I tried it again and it was only leaking from the rear bottom. Just redid again a few moments ago and now it’s back leaking from the middle again(after wiping the area off). Of course it gets to smoking after a few mins too

    With the old school V8 engines your better off using cork valve cover gaskets in most cases. The main reason being that the sheetmetal valve covers bend and deform so easily and if the valve cover isn't 100% flat then the rubber gaskets will almost certainly leak, some engines like small block Chevys also have a rough cast valve cover sealing rail and the rubber gaskets never work on those, the Oldsmobile engines aren't as bad because they have a machined valve cover surface but I always opt for the cork gaskets, put them on dry and do not overtighen and they will usually not leak.

    • @oldsguysgarage
      @oldsguysgarage  Před 2 lety

      Note taken! Rubber was on them originally and havent had any issues. I like the rubber because its reusable if you have to remove the valve cover such as on a project car. Yes its certainly important to flatten the valve cover if necessary.

    • @beavisaurus
      @beavisaurus Před 8 měsíci +1

      On the Olds 307s, they were white stampings, round stamps with the "timing ok" with the test stand letter. They often smeared them and some are harder to read. Once the timing was checked at the engine plant and was correct, the stamp went on.

      There is a ground wire that goes on top that comes out of the wiring harness that contains wires for cruise control module and other items. There is a red wire that comes from the battery that connects to the back of the alternator.

    How many bolts are on each valve cover? 5 or 10? My daily is a 87 Brougham with the 307 Vin Y. Im having a hard time finding new covers. Im on the 3rd set of valve cover gsskets in 3 years wich means almost 2k in shop repair. Next pair i get i want to install new covers also.

    • @oldsguysgarage
      @oldsguysgarage  Před 2 lety +1

      5 on these 307's. replacement valve covers for these 307s with only 5 holes are a tough find for sure. Try cork if rubber didnt work. You can also find some rubber gaskets on ebay that have a metal core which helps from over tightening. I glue them on with permatix black to the valve cover and then after glue sets up put the valve cover on the head. Flattening existing valve cover helps too. These are a bear for sure. i wish they had 10 bolts like on the older olds motors.

Its just not reasonable. The Brougham was 1500$ and im about to have the 4th set of valve cover gaskets installed. Other than that the 307 is a great engine. It never let me down. I drove it up and down the eastcoast. Right now im in the Highlands of NC,steep hills,super curvey roads but shes doing great if you dont pay attention to the gasmileage. Im from Germany and for me gas is still cheap here,over there i would pay almost 12$/gallon and could never afford a Classic Cadillac. So god bless America.👌👌👌

Write that code down and search the web for Olds FAQS.com, commonly found under oldsjunction.com and look up what size motor you have. my guess is a 350 if its original but it worth checking for sure!
