How to replace VALVE COVER GASKETS on a Chevy 350 Squarebody Truck video [Wrench At Home]

- Today I'm going to replace the old and leaky valve cover gaskets on the engine of my 1980 #GMC Sierra #Stepside #Squarebody truck. It has a Chevy 350 small-block under the hood thats a bit sweaty on both sides, with some oil running down the cylinder heads. I will also replace the crusty valve cover hold-down bolts with some shiny new ones.
The gaskets I'm going to use are re-usable blue Fel-pro performance gaskets. A bunch of people were recommending these online, so I'll give them a try. They are a combination of a molded silicone rubber with a steel core.
I got some chrome Y-wing valve cover bolts to replace the old ones on the truck. They are the same as the ones on the truck right now except I never got the top wing parts that you actually have to use to loosen them. I like the retro look of these and they make valve cover removal fast and easy, without having to use any tools whatsoever.

Also something to note around Wrench At Home: this channel is for my own entertainment and my videos are not meant as tutorials. My channel is just a documentation of me working on my own personal car(s) and I can't give any guarantees that the things I do will work for your particular car.
I am just a normal guy and by no means a trained mechanic (I design and build websites for a living). I try to do things myself while figuring out 'the how' with a little help from the internet. Please put any tips, pointers or extra info you can share with me in the comments of this video.
I hope you enjoy this video and if you do, please like the video and subscribe, it really helps out the channel. Thanks!

Hindsight comment: don’t use steelwool to clean and/or polish your chrome valve covers, but use aluminium foil instead! It’s way softer, gives a great shine and won’t scratch your covers.
O and have a blessed day or night and thank yuns
Great video, I just installed these same gaskets on my 63 Chevy. They finally stopped my sweaty valve covers😎👍🏽
Happy it helped you, thanks for watching!
I like how you accented your emblems on the fenders. real cool truck
Awesome video bro
Beautiful square body I love it!
Thanks man!
Nice just what I need
Nice job...I wonder how many people paid attention to how you mounted the power steering pump to the block....so many people with c10s with headers make some sort of a mount running off the driver side header. Nice fabrication you did to make your mount.
I can't really take credit any for that, it was already on the truck when I bought it :-) but thank you for watching and noticing these details!
I own a 78 C10 I'll be replacing the valve cover gaskets in the near future, this video sure will help. Thank you for this.
You’re very welcome, good luck with replacing yours!
@@WrenchAtHome I was considering selling after I do a bit of touch up work to it but everytime I drive it I reconsider, I absolutely love having no computers telling the vehicle what to do or not. Plus I was born in 75 and always have had older vehicles, I'm torn on what to do lol
Yeah I get what you mean, driving an older truck definitely has it's charms! I would only sell mine if I desperately needed the money, but that's me lol
@@WrenchAtHome that's what happens, I see all the work I'd need to do to get it where I would like it to be. After that I think if selling it to a good home to someone that would appreciate it. Then I take it for a ride and love it's old school feel I get torn. Nothing beats the 350ci 4bbl with true dual exhaust and no catalytic converters lol
How the gaskets so far?
Thanks for the video I'm going to do same thing to my 1969 Chevrolet Elcamino Malibu
Awesome car, good luck and thank you for watching!
Got a 1984 3500 dually and she's got a 1995 350 engine but it's leaking from tge left valve cover gasket pretty bad oil all over that side and the rear main seal. I'll definitely give this a try to stop tge valve cover leak
Sounds like an awesome machine, good luck!
Did you use any sealer on any part of the new gasket? Ive never used these but im curious. Ive also got a valve cover leak on cork gaskets
No, I didn’t, you shouldn’t need to use any extra sealant with this type of gaskets. You could use sealant of course, I don’t think it would hurt, but it is not necessary.
Steel wool works great on any metal, next time spray some of the foam window cleaner all over what your cleaning first. And get the 0000 steel wool it's soft.
*Trys to remove valve cover* **MUSIC INTENIFIES!!!!**
When I install my felpro gasket’s will I have to put silicone on the gasket or should I just slap them on and run them?
No silicone application needed, just slap them on. These gaskets already have a molded silicone layer installed from factory.
Is there anyway you could give me the part number to these gaskets? Every set I get does not fit correctly and these look like they would fit perfectly
Sure, the part/model number is 1628, I got them on Amazon. There is also a link to the Amazon listing in the video description. Good luck!
Old vid i know. But do i have to use any sealants on them? I have a 76 with a 350.
On the ones I used in the video you don’t need any sealant.
What is the brand name on the valve gaskets? Thanks.
They are Fel-Pro 1628 Valve Cover Gaskets. You can find a link to the Amazon page of these gaskets in the video description!
My edelbrock oil cap keep spinning, solution?
Do you mean it’s spinning loose over time because of engine vibrations, or that it’s not coming off at all because it keeps spinning? If it’s the latter, your oil cap needs to be replaced. You can try drilling through both ‘layers’ of the oil cap with a small drill bit - be careful that you don’t go too deep and damage other components on the oil filler neck or engine block. Adding a small piece of tape to the drill bit can help you see how deep you can go. You should drill in the top side, near the outer edge of the oil cap, where you can drill through both layers of the cap. Then loosen and remove the drill but leave the drill bit sitting in the oil cap. This locks both parts of the cap together. Now you should be able to remove the cap. Let me know if this was of any help to you!
Did you use sealant or no sealant??
I did not use sealant. These type of gaskets don’t need it - although it probably wouldn’t hurt.
I just installed my new covers with those gaskets and passenger side is leaking in the rear not crazy but it does have a small leak.
Hey man, that should not be happening, these are high quality and pretty expensive gaskets. Did you try tightening them a little bit more on the leaky side? Because of the thick rubber layer on these type of gaskets they can be tightened pretty good. I see you used new covers and I assume they aren't bent or warped. Did you clean the surface on the engine side and removed any leftover silicone before installing? You could try to add some sealant to get rid of the leak, but that shouldn't be necessary with these gaskets.. There is of course a very small change the gasket itself is leaking, in that case you could try to get a replacement at the store you bought these. Good luck and let me know if and how you fixed it!
What are the things you took screws off with
Those are "valve cover wing bolts". There is an Amazon link in the video description!
I got some air pushing outwhat sealant can i iuse
I didn’t use sealant on my gaskets (not needed). I imagine you could use any type of gasket sealant, personally I would go for some sort of Permatex RTV. You might want to check your gasket material (cork, silicone, etc) so you can choose the right sealant for your application.
@@WrenchAtHome Its a pink red silicone gasket, thanks ill try some rtv.does a valve cover that leaks air really that big of a deal? On another question i put in a new feul pump n filter distributor ignition module , new battery when i crank it does a revolution then stops so i mash the gas pedal to fire it up, what could the problem be, thanks
I don't think a leaky valve cover gasket is that big of a deal, if you don't mind the oil leaking out.. as long as you keep a close eye on your engine oil level you'll probably be fine. As soon as the oil level drops too low you're risking some serious engine damage though. Good luck!
Your other question sounds to me like a bad starter, starter relais/solenoid or a bad electrical connection from starter to battery? I see you already got a new battery so the battery itself is probably not causing this issue.. make sure the battery voltage is at least 12 volts for a proper crank. I don't think the fuel pump has anything to do with it, the engine should still turn over even with a bad pump. Did you check all your ground connections? Most of the time electrical issues with these trucks are ground related.
@@sirjohnahayfalcon not to high jack your thread but check your engines timing if its between 20-12 it should be fine but might want to back it down a bit and see if it works more consistently for you if your timing is to advanced itll cause that issue had that myself on my iroc
@@AcidJurassic u mean 20 to 12 degree btdc?
Should the words "pushrod side" be facing up?
Yes, although I don’t think it matters that much because they’re pretty symmetrical.
Do bolts need to be torqued?
Header bolts yes, if you can fit a torque wrench in between the headers that is. Valve cover bolts I don't know, if you have normal bolts with a hexagon pattern I'd say probably yes, but the wing nuts I used won't fit a torque or socket wrench so I had to do it by hand. I regularly check if they're still tight (and they are).
@@WrenchAtHome hell yeah! I watched this yesterday and went into work to pick up my thick cork gaskets and the same style of hold down bolts with the wing.
That's awesome, good luck replacing them!
@@elcaminodraco so heard the rubber ones Would work a little better, how did the cork ones do ?!
Do I have to drain the oil before?
No, you do not need to drain the oil. As long as you’re working on a cold engine, all the oil will be sitting in the oil pan/sump at the bottom of the engine.
Whats the make and part number?
Check the video description, it’s all in there!
Why does this have so little views?
Lol, we all have to start somewhere! But thank you for watching!
thank, you for you're video. [RANDOM VANNERS. EAST COAST VA. 2%]
