A channel for all those "do it-yourselfers" out there!
My dad called me up one day and said "Son, I got to move my car out of my mom's house, if you want it you can have it, if not I'm just going to sell it."
So of course I said yes I'll take it!
So with so much work to do, I thought I would document my improvements and fixes with my Oldsmobiles and perhaps other vehicles my wife and I own. So you will probably see a lot of my 1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme, the W-Machine, and my wife's 79 El Camino a.k.a Thunderbucket, and her 71 Buick Riviera. Taking after my dad, i just had to have an Oldsmobile as my first car which I still have today. Recently, my dad passed down his modified 1972 Olds Cutlass to me I thought i would document the process of bringing it back to life. This page is about posting helpful videos for those taking care of and restoring classic vehicles and hopefully give a bolt of inspiration as well, as we all work hard to keeping these time machines running.....

I have to put one Of these on tomorrow 66 cutlass
Doing an intake manifold gasket this weekend on my 307 - previous owner put the fuel filter in backwards and the part that holds it was loose (not even finger tight). Not sure how it even ran and didnt leak haha.
I did this and it was successful but now my car won't go in reverse do yk what I could've did to cause that??
Just did this on a 1990 Cadillac broham, nightmare job. I didn't use a punch or silicone, I tucked the gasket in with my fingers after setting the gasket on the head then putting the valve cover over top of it. Also used a pick to align the holes. Anytime I've used silicone on rubber gaskets they leak. Learned that as an independent/dealer tech.
So did the No silicone job work? I’m asking because after 3 attempts with permatex my cover is still leaking and I’m about over it
@@lauedbeatz5655 yes it did. just a nightmare to do, I laid the gasket on the head. then slipped the valve cover it, worked it with my fingers and a pick to line up the holes. you may have to buff down the surface of the head some to get it super clean .
@@justinyoungstown ok I’m gonna try this after I scrape a .25” of gasket maker off the cover lol I’m also using rubber gaskets just fyi. I think it may be possible that the bottom middle bolt hole on the cover may be uneven too. Hope this works though. Glad my passenger cover isn’t leaking atleast
@@lauedbeatz5655 u sure it is not old oil leaking/ burning off? ur taking where the slinky looking things attaches to the exhaust? could be old excess oil. I've learned over the years to never use silicone on rubber. had a few good leaks from doing so. even a master gm tech I work with now and these cars where in his prime said don't as well. but to each his own.
@@justinyoungstown i don’t think so. It was leaking from the bottom middle area for a couple days then I tried it again and it was only leaking from the rear bottom. Just redid again a few moments ago and now it’s back leaking from the middle again(after wiping the area off). Of course it gets to smoking after a few mins too
Very nice work, it came out beautiful.
Lost me at "pepsi".
Funny, I saw the Pepsi in his hand and thought "this guy knows what he's doing"
I havent saw this video and I’m already super happy that I find this channel!!!
So who was driving 😂
I put my starter on and when I turn key I only hear starter going and it not engaging with the flywheel do you know why
First make sure you are using correct size and fit as old starter. Did the old one have shims? Second check the power wire coming from battery and make sure you are getting 12v. If you are, it’s probably a bad solenoid. Remove starter and bench test or take it to auto parts store so they can check it. If bad get another and have them test it before taking it home
Yeah it aint goin nowhere with a nice heavy duty chain on it. Get a threaded link lock and try to get 6 but at least 5 of the coils making an a X with the chain. While you lift the car up by the control arm and compress the coil fully. Obviously make sure you have another jack under the car as when you tie the chains and start to slowly lower the jack underneath the control arm it will need to come down on the second jack. I have removed countrless coils this way doing suspension repairs and replacements as a collision tech. Dont use flimsy chqins though. Heavy duty chain from home depot can withstand far more pressure than that coil can exert. So fear not just make sure you tie it properly.
Jus bought a 1982 4 door Malibu this is hella motivation to hook her up
Id say so too!! LOL
10 flushes ? I hope not. My coolant in the 77 Eldo looks like 5 right now and the car sat 22 years. I drove it home with heat on, not knowing heater core might be shot. After I got it home, I found out, The radiator took 2 gallons of coolant ! Total system holds 6 gallons. Radiator has heavy scale on the tubes. Vinegar ? CLR, IDK yet. Doing the bumper fillers and paint. If it looks better, it will fit in better with my neighbors.
Good luck!
just FYI the guys said old rad. was no good some one put stop leak in the system that was the goope he was pulling out
Interesting . . .
@@oldsguysgarage when the "stop leak" coolant dried, was there any white residue ? Had a subaru that blew the radiator (son was driving so information is sparse), but it splashed all over the engine bay and when it dried, there was this white crystalline powder. Tow guy said that was stop leak.
Liquid glass
@@DanTheManIOM I wouldnt know. As far as I know stop leak was never used on the old radiator in the 72 cutlass. There was what appeared calcium buildup of sorts in coolant passages of intake manifold before system was flushed. Could a stop leak have contributed to the buildup perhaps, but It was put in by me and the car sat for so long I dont really know what it was.
@@oldsguysgarage from sitting and tap water, I think we get calcium carbonate deposits. They were super hard in the eldo radiator (car sat 22 years), but I put vinegar in and they were soft, and gooey, like that teflon paste thread sealant. I don't care, it;s flush it out, brownish coolant and rusty bits, vinegar sitting in there now, in the radiator. I'll let it sit as I work on other things on teh car maybe in a few days, start it up and let it circulate to clean it, drop it out, and refill and test it, that is the plan, FWIW.
You have the plunger in up side down ,the head of plunger installs down, trim as needed
Thanks!!! It still working but ill go ahead and reverse it!
Is there a part number for those O-rings?
Best i can do is refer you to quadrajetpower.com and im sure they can help!!
@oldsguysgarage I appreciate it. Thank you very much.
@@Weazel615 Youre welcome! I hope you find what you need.
GOD BLESS THE HEAVENS A VIDEO ON MY ENGINE?!?
LOL!! Yes!
Hi, is there an advantage using the gaskets including rtv?
Its just the way my wife wanted to do it at the time. I believe the rtv also help hold gaskets in place.
doesn't the end with the pig tail go up and the flat side go down
Where did you get your brake kit?
Summit racing. I bought the brake booster off ebay. Summit has it as well. Good luck!
What’s going on with your tach🤔
I need to fix it, some days it works some days it reads too high.
Can't wait to do this job today. 😢
My 66 cutlass stoped running this weekend. It’s not getting gas. So looks like I’m going to be replacing my pump. Question on my car between the carb and pump is one of them big metal filters. I see your is just a gas line straight to carb. Should I eliminate the filter?
I later put a filter in line for sure. I believe this video was made weeks before I turned motor over for first time.
I appreciate this video so much. I completed my driver side first because I knew that's where my leak was. Just looking at that passenger side which isn't leaking, makes me want to throw in the towel.😅😅
Passenger side is quite a task for sure!
Thank you for the information and part#
Youre welcome!
Hey. Thanks for the video. Is there a reason why you decided not to use the supplied plastic strips for lining up the pilot holes? Thanks.
Hey did you ever do a smog delete? If so I need your assistance
Your video was very informative! Thanks!! At the end though, it would've been nice to see and learn what you actually did to make the horn work!
Oops! I bend a tab on the back of the center cap a little more so it would make contact with the plunger. I thought i showed that. I know i have the video somewhere.
Easier and SAFER way of doing it - attach the spindle and DO NOT attach the lower arm back bolts leaving the back FREE. Put the jack on the arm between the bushing holes and lift the back of the lower arm up to the holes and insert bolts. NO SPRING COMPRESSOR NECESSARY. Much safer because the spindle/brake shield will be there to protect it from coming out. This way too you can adjust the fully stretched spring into the correct position and THEN lift up the lower control arm. Been doing it that way for GM products for yrs. 1 more thing - use a block of wood on the jack cup and it will protect your paint job AND the part from being damaged. Just My 2cents...
I use jaxk to start crankin spring up jackin up Lower controlarm ..then i remove spring compressor and send a threaded rod through shoc tower ..screwing up steering knuckle to upper control arm lock it down .Remove threaded rod .boom I'm done ..Every1 has there way ..I'm going try yours got some springs to install this week on my old buick
I’m boutta try that
Just what I needed as I'm reassembling my 1972 Skylark. Thanks for making the detailed video.
Nice! Youre welcome!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you ....
Where did you find the drivers side small brake line? I snapped my hard line yesterday :/
I ordered a brake line kit. The lines where stainless. If I had to do it over again I would have bought regular glavanized brake lines and not stainless. Stainless turned out hard to cut and flare when needed.
Need to rebuild the front suspension on my 72 and 77 Nova. Looks pretty straight forward. Thanks
If i can do it anybody can do it! LOl. No really, I was really surprised how smooth everything went.
Hey I’m currently trying to replace my wheel spindles on my 70 cutlass and I can’t find a pair that has a place for the tie rods to connect. Where did you get yours?
My wheel spindles came with the front disc brake conversion kit I bought through summit racing.
That elec plug is you're ilde speed control module......
Thanks! Ill have to take a look!
Did you put the lower saddles on the seam of the radiator? I have the same radiator and they didn't fit it right during the swap so they left the top plate off. Original saddles will work on the core side of the seam but I dont think they want them there. I bought new 4 core radiator top plate because that is what is available. It seems to be too much of a gap from the mount holes. Radiator is not sitting up and down level.
Sorry to hear about the issue, hope it ends up working out. Yes, I put the seam of radiator on the stock saddles that are used with the larger core radiator. The radiator may have sat a little higher raising the top plate. Yes, I also used the 4 core radiator top plate. Let me know how it works out, i did not have a problem attaching top cap if that is the mount holes your are referring to.
Where can I get those attachments??
Attachments? What are you referring to?
Looks good great job, i need to do my nova's i bought all new control arms as well.
Thank you! Good luck and be safe around those springs!!
The chain was a great idea. I’m getting ready to do this for the first time on my 79 camaro and was worried about the safety of it all. This will give me a bit more peace of mind.
Good luck and be careful! Keep pressure from underneath on that spring and lower that jack slowwww.
Having the chain on there is smart. Even if it did try to fly out it would just make a loud noise..
Displacement displacing lack there of into the L lane.
💯🏅🏆
Thanks!
What brackets did you use. Im trying to find some and no dice
Hi there! Inline tube sells brackets for 4 core radiator. thats what i used. I think cold case now offers its own bracket as well.
66 chevelle
Not a Holden☠️
Good video. Good to see a visual to see just what a real PITA it is to change the valve cover gaskets on a G-body Cutlass with a 307.
Thanks!! Best to get it done right first time for sure.
Was this a contest???
The races were at the end of the one day rolling car tour that had four stops before finishing at a drag strip. Races were mostly for fun, although they did have a prize for fastest time.
Thanks for showing the dust cover going back on. Most videos don't.
You're welcome!
@@oldsguysgarage seems silly, but when I crawled under my car and saw a dust cover I wasn't sure exactly what it was since no videos showed one. Figured it was a cover but nice to have confirmation
Which year is that fox body??
What kind of hi temp or did you use hi temp paint?
