    You have a "vin 9" 307 the one to have is the "vin Y" with the rolling cam. You can take the 5A heads and swap them with the 7A heads the "vin Y" olds had but youll have to swap the intake too cause the 5A heads use conventional style intake ports. then you got a good 307.
    The oldsmobile 307 was introduced in 81 and used flat tappet cam until 85 then went to roller cam in 86 then ceased production in 1990.

      @myrtistaylor5759 Před 2 lety +1

      @@garythegear they got the roller and 7A heads in 86. The 307 i believe was introduced in 81 after the olds 350 rocket ceased production in 1980 and the smaller bored blocks took its place. The United states government started cracking down on emission laws in the late 70s so these "smog" engines took their place.

      @@garythegear I built quite a few engines and the last one I made was 307 olds, i wanted to build something unique so i chose the olds 307 Not alot of people build those because they were viewed a throw away engine be the cost to make power was expensive and simply putting in a 350 was alot cheaper. My first car i bought was an 89 Buick electra estate wagon and that had a 307 olds and so did my fathers station wagon when i was a kid. i loved that car so the 307 holds a special sentimental feeling in me.

      or any what they call small block olds motor a 350 rocket would do very nicely in that and probably be a better choice than the 403 in my opinion actually the 403 was ah ok but kinda doggish where an older 4 barrel rocket 350 from an old cutlass or vista cruiser or somsthing would be a screamer bet or you can always go the easy way because im sure the holes are drilled in the frame for the mounts a small block Chevy will bolt right in as well just as easy and much cheaper also could be hopped up cheaper too w even exhaust manifolds and just dual exhaust flilowmarwers or somsthing it would sound right and be a really nice cruiser for the cheap if you did it right

The carbs were set set on the lean side at the factory and sealed so you couldnt adjust it , I guess it was for emissions and fuel economy.I heard you could tap or drill out those mixture screws so you could adjust for more power response. I had a chevy 307 in a 1968 Impala it had 200 hp! with a power glide tranny.That 307 replaced the 283 engine. People make fun of the olds 307 I happen to like it. I am a G Car Guy! I had a 85 cutlass my first car as well with a 307 I got it with horrible blow bye but still drove it for 5 years and it only let me down once and needed a trans and the motor rebuilt and I just ended up selling it I always wanted to restore it but wasn’t ecomical

      The 307 was last FOUR barrel carburated engine. The 5.8 ford had a 2 barrel.

    I think you got that the wrong way around ! The roller cam version is so much better , anything with roller cams is smother, lasts longer and more power . Every V8 today is roller cam

    Those and the 305 Chevy were idiot proof practically due to the heads not flowing enough to let it over rev and blow itself uo

      Ya I think the plan in the day was to provide a fuel efficient and reliable engine , not much one can do to modify them unfortunately but they were certainly bullet proof thanks for watching 👍

      I've seen some rather stout 305 chevys but thats only because they are in the small block Chevy family and things fit from one engine to another cams heads etc unfortunately the same.is not.so true w the 307 olds motor there is way less aftermarket support for the poor girl hence making upgrades performance wise not as easy or common the heads as I said are the biggest issue shrouded valves due to small cylinders one of the biggest issues people have found ways around that issue of course and although not as desirable as a 350.the 305 has found its way into the engine bays of a lot of decent performing cars it has more limitations than its big brother the 350 but with some finessing can make some really really good power at a low cost compared to an olds motor due to as I said the aftermarket supply and the interchangeability of parts

      I’ve seen quite a few 307s start knocking after 3 seconds of valve float, also heard people claim that they’re a tough motor, not really sure what to think of them

    • @garythegear
      @garythegear  Před rokem

      Well valve float on anything is not good, I personally have always been into the hot rod or hot rod able engines like big blocks or the 350 however there seems to be a big following for these little engines and I won't argue with anyone about their reliability, each to their own I guess

    Why is the earlier 307 better? You kept saying but never explained why

    • @garythegear
      @garythegear  Před 2 lety +1

      The earlier one was the higher horse power version, nothing wrong with the newer version just down on power

      No worries I never expected the interest in this little engine we basically went over to Carl's to help him out as you saw in the video and I thought it would make for boring content if I didn't arm myself with a little information on these engines and then to my surprise there appears to be alot of interest in them , anyway thank you for watching I appreciate it

    I won a $100 bet on the ole 307. My drunken uncle (who worked at Olds for over 30yrs) told me a 307 was a Chevy engine. I said, I'll be you $100. Oldsmobile had made a book just around that time on a lot of Olds history, and given them to it's employees. I told my uncle go grab that book. I opened right up to the 307...give me my $100! Chevy guy betting an Olds guy about Olds engines. 🤣
