If you don’t want to watch some of them but are still curious, Mista GG is an awesome creator who does reviews of disturbing movies in a lighthearted way that’s watchable but also doesn’t make it too light if that makes sense. From this list, he’s done The Sadness and Soft and Quiet, but he’s also done Nekromantik and Pink Flamingos for example. Really recommend his channel in general! ♥️
Another channel recommendation for disturbing movie reviews for those curious but not curious enough to watch the actual film ( I’m one of those ) is Couple of Creeps. They’re a small channel but they’re great and they review some of the deeper iceberg movies.
Also, Spooky Rice. Very helpful to me.
also love love zzzavid !
Yesss love these MistaGG and Spookyrice shout outs!
I ADORE Mista GG. I have an intense, reckless curiosity I have to control and Mista GG’s channels have allowed me to feed my curiosity about movies I probably shouldn’t watch on my own.
Having boundaries is SO important in media. A lot of people like to debate your authenticity as a horror fan if there are certain subjects you don't want to engage with and I think you putting this out there does so much good for the community.
It does not harm the horror community for individuals to have boundaries. I personally won’t watch pregnancy horror, but there’s thousands of people out there who will, so those movies will still be made. It’s not bad to have preferences lol
Yep. I don’t like classic slashers and get hate on all the time. I didn’t grow up watching horror so now, especially since saw was my first horror experience and now own and frequently watch the terrifier movies, i just get bored and the plot is so practical
I don't have boundaries when it comes to horror movies. If other people do, that's their business. I have certain friends I watch the crazy stuff with. Some I don't. There isn't a horror movie I won't watch and I've seen some of the craziest shit ever. But how it's presented is what makes the difference. I find movies like Schindler's List and especially Come and See (1985) far more disturbing.
So much this. I had to leave the Horror fan subreddit because I was getting harassed and attacked so often just for saying that stuff like Hostel isn't really my bag and that I watch horror movies for fun (not the bragging rights that come with having sat though something I personally find gross). It's pretty sad to see that this is what the horror fan community has degenerated into. It used to be a fertile ground for filmmakers and audiences to enjoy and experiment with new filmmaking techniques, plot devices, or cinematography styles. Now it seems like it's been taken over by the same asshole fanboys that gatekeep too many other genres. Ugh. As you said, having boundaries and protecting your mental well-being is VERY important and applies to what media we consume as much as anything else we take in.
@@ferox965 How nice for you. But having boundaries in the media we consume is actually healthy. It kind of says something though when it requires ever more increasingly graphic doses of gore to satisfy that urge. I'd venture to say that if things like Shindler's List are too disturbing for you, you might want to reasses your media consumption habits. Shindler's List is based on real events of tremendous consequence for all human beings and is far and away more critical viewing than Terrifier 3.
As an autistic woman, I do the exact same thing with every horror movie, looking up the plot to see if I can handle it. Children and animals are off limits, or I will have a very visceral reaction and it will be hard for me to shake. I also struggle with SA because of a previous abusive relationship. Nothing wrong with knowing your boundaries!
I won't watch a movie that has a dogs in it, because they alway die.
wow but humans fine. Dogpill is indeed brutal@@cmacdhon
Yeah same here, I look up trigger warnings for horror movies, if it has SA or sexual violence I pass
same here! i refuse to watch movies in which children and dogs are killed, ESPECIALLY if in gorey fashion.
as an argentinian horror fan i’m super excited to see how well “when evil lurks” is doing!!
here in argentina we have many talented film makers but horror has always been overlooked in some way or another, so it’s great to see how it grows!
i myself haven’t watched the movie yet because of how disturbing it seems but was waiting for you to talk about it since i love your channel so much and it prides me to see an argentinian film make it internationally.
great video as always, hope you’re doing well!
Me encantaría ver la película en el cine pero vivo en san martin, Buenos Aires, y no hay cine cerca. Lo más cerca es en capital. Un garrón.
tremenda pero es buenisima, si no me equivoco está en stremio
I can see both sides on When Evil Lurks. On one hand, I actually watched the movie and I thought it was very well made. It is an extremely graphic examination of how evil evil can be. Nothing is safe from it.
On the other hand, since it is so brutal and uncompromising in its vision, I can easily understand why there are people who wouldn’t want to see it. It’s not a film for everyone.
Argentinians really love horror! That's why there are many old germans there
Thanks for normalizing not having to watch every single horror movie to be a “true horror fan” ps your hair looks amazing 🖤
Yeah nobody has to watch anything, as long as we're having fun with what we watch it's all that matters.
Though personally I do really enjoy watching as many different films as I can, not to prove any childish horror fan validation thing. But just because I genuinely enjoy watching loads of stuff.
sorry you aren't a TRUE horror fan if you are too scared to watch certain movies
"oh no racial language" smh
@@MikeG82I get where you’re coming from, Horror is about testing the limits after all. But I mean, if you have certain traumas associated with specific situations (SA, suicide, etc) then I mean, why put yourself through that.
@@tristensingh7830 And here I thought watching horror movies was about having fun. If you enjoy testing your limits, then great (I do, too), but not everyone does, and no one is "not a 'true' horror fan" just because they want to watch movies they know they'll enjoy, and avoid movies there pretty sure they won't.
@MikeG82 it’s not about being too scared. Not all horror sub-genre’s are for everyone. For example I find exorcism movies kinda boring and I never jumped on the Terrifier train 🤷🏻♀️. If something doesn’t interest you it’s ok not to watch it
I have to say...when evil lurks has set the bar really high for me from here on out. Not just with the gore and shocking scenes but with the atmosphere, the slow burns, not having jump scares every 5 seconds, you really feel helpless watching it. It is the best horror I've seen since the original exorcist when I was a teenager.
the fact that the horror starts right away (in every movie i see you have to watch at least 30 min to get SOMETHING) and everything has a meaning, it's really really good as a movie in general, not just horror. i'm argentinian and i'm very proud of this movie, also it represents us sooo well (i don't know how they manage to translate it lol) ❤
I loved it and hated the main character. But the most horrific movies are foreign.
she is missing out big time.
It ain't THAT great wow havent see much horror I assume? Way better slow burns and all else you mentioned out there.
@@torillanos9837damn EVERY horror movie starts 30min in? Again you haven't watched much to claim that....
When Evil lurks is like Hereditary just a little gorier. It's not the gore that's disturbing, it's the atmosphere and anxiety of everything you thought was going happen to totally do a 180.
When Evil Lurks is a lot closer to the Evil Dead 2013 and The Sadness ( minus the ...ya know..) than it would be Hereditary.
Yes. Just more infuriating
I love how open you are about your boundaries and why you won’t watch certain movies. I wish there were more people like you in the horror community.
Me (not a parent) am so excited about Terrifier 3 but it’s super valid for anyone to not watch a movie for whatever the reason. You’re not a bad person for enjoying a movie someone else finds uncomfortable and you’re a bad person for shaming someone for refusing to watch a movie
Yeah but Terrifier is like the saturday morning cartoons of horror. Its so like not scary at all and the kid violence is all like super fake. I dont know seems dumb if you actually watch it.
@@Digglerism to you
I watched the first one and have been so afraid to watch the second one 😅 and I saw the first one back when it first released. the gore is just so over the top and definitely too much for me but I wanna try watching the second one at some point!
Yea it's totally super valid
Same and a mom of 3 I concur
Can’t get enough of these ❤ let’s all embrace our boundaries in watching movies. I just watched the sadness yesterday and I regret it. I knew I would, but I still watched it. And now I know why it’s called the sadness. Cause it made me really sad.
dude yeah i remember blind watching this and literally started crying bc it was so gnarly. didn’t think it was particularly amazing either
As in the Taiwanese horror film? Then be aware of the Crossed comic series because that film was loosely based off that comic
Yeah that movie is specifically for horror fans that love gore and wish that more movies had more gore.
@@nrgbunni. i love gore it was the sexual aspects i couldn’t handle
@@gracex3217exactly. All the gore was fine… The eye scene though.. made me sick
Boundaries are so important, especially with the media we choose to consume. You aren’t “more of a fan” because you are willing to watch/read everything. People have triggers and that’s okay. Let’s all respect that.
Freaky was absolutely amazing. One of my very fave horror films of the last decade. I am also not a huge fan of horror comedy but Freaky was a total blast.
even as a 20-something non-parent, i still find it hard to watch movies where children are hurt/murdered. i'm in the same
boat as you as to where I don't think it should be off-limits for children to die in horror, but I do think it has to be intergral to the story and not extremely graphic. hereditary is a good example of this (although pretty graphic).
also i personally dont think cabin in the woods is a horror comedy, i think its s horror movie with comedic relief lol esp in comparison to freaky and happy death day
I would say a quiet place is a better example because it happens off screen and you Don’t see anything, it’s just heavily implied and leads the plot from there.
@@ml8452 what a boring take. That scene was barely impactful imo - lets not put movies in boxes.
@@kbucket okay? Your opinion, I stand by mine. No need to be rude.
I appreciate how respectful you are when discussing these movies and how you've started the conversation about boundaries in horror. Not enough people in the community talk about it.
For me as a Terrifier fan, my opinion on the whole discourse is simply people are allowed to want to watch the film it doesn't make them bad people and people are allowed to not want to watch the film as long as you aren't judging people for their choice who cares. I don't particularily want Art to kill the kid but without sounding like a freak I personally will still be seeing the film regardless.
I also liked the Terrifier movies. The extremity of how gory they are feels so ridiculous and over the top to me that it makes it entertaining. Hardly remember the lore and storyline, though. I remember being confused about it by the end of Terrifier 2. I was just along for the ride. I get that it’s not for everyone and nobody *has* to watch them. Nobody has to watch anything they don’t want to.
Also I’m loving your american mary pfp 😎
I’m interested in the character of Art the Clown, but not at all in seeing the films. Like I’ll go as far as watching the (censored) Terrifier Kill Counts but I’ll never watch the actual films. Weirdly I feel like I’d be fine with all the Terrifier scenes if they were books. I know the gore is the selling point but I just can’t watch some of those scenes.
@@bunchoflemons that's fair, honestly the only reason I do watch the Terrifier movies is for Art, I'm not usually one for intense amounts of gore in horror films but I just love Art as a character.
Horror fans having a moral compass on what is acceptable and what isn’t in horror movies is always a weird take. As long as actors aren’t being abused on set I don’t see the difference between any kind of kills in a movie. Like how is an animal death worse or better than a human dead, same with children. Everyone can have their limits but anyone being killed should be a bad thing unless it’s in self defense.
Terrifier fans will watch women being brutally tortured and mutilated which is very weird because the men always get quick kills in comparison to the women, but a kid is where the line is drawn.
I love when you make these type of videos as it’s so validating for me! I often feel like I’m not ~actually~ a horror fan cause I don’t want to suffer but want to have a good time instead. But I love horror and just know what I don’t want to see!
I watched the remake of "I Spit on Your Grave" because of your last video, just out of sheer curiosity. I wish I didn't, I couldn't stop thinking about it for days no matter how much I wanted to. I understand it can be cathartic for some survivors, but good GRIEF I want to forget I ever watched it!!!
I rewatched that like 3 times, i rly enjoyed it & the 2nd one too
I hate movies of these premise. It's just unnecessary
The Nightingale is basically a PG 13 I Spit on Your Grave remake but it's set in colonial Australia. Her revenge gets sidelined so they can talk about the racism the Irish and Aborigione experienced.
The ISoUG remake does have an interesting sequel that explores her character after she move back to civilization but despite her revenge she cant escape what happened to her so it expands on her trauma without having to sit through THAT scene again.
even though i would watch some of the movies on this list, these vids are so comforting to me. i refuse to watch any movies with on screen sa or extreme and targeted violence against women, and i hate that theres a stigma in the horror community about having boundaries. thank you for making these vids!!
Yeah I used to be able to watch most disturbing things when I was younger and then I watched something really messed up and had a panic attack, and these days I'm a lot more sensitive and more selective about what I'll watch, I still like to watch horror movies sometimes though
I accidentally watched a clip of an indie movie (can't remember the title) where a woman was SA-ed and then shot in the head (twice!) and I felt so nauseous that I turned it off immediately. I just couldn't do it. The promotional pictures and trailers of Terrifier also just turned me off from the movies so I just never bothered watching it, I have a feeling I can't stomach those either. But I do love psychological horror/thrillers and folk horror.
For a horror fan, you're pretty tame and refuse to watch a lot of good movies. Also, When evil lurks is argentinian, not spanish. You should watch it!
I love these videos because it’s good to discuss boundaries in horror/in general, but also because they give me a lot of films to add to my watchlist 😅
Got about 40 minutes into Soft and Quiet without ever hearing about it before - was so shocked about what was going on...i stopped it and read the plot summary and was so happy with my decision to stop watching it
As a fellow Argentinian follower I appreciate you giving "When Evil Lurks" a shout-out because we're really trying to get Argentina to make more horror movies because they did an amazing job. This movie isn't AS bad as you would think but it does have..some disturbing images. They go by pretty quickly but they leave an impression. My dad doesn't do dead kids in movies it's a hard limit for him so I told him not to watch it, he was very grateful. however, it does have an AMAZING storyline, photography, sound design and score. Such a win for me I loved it. If any of you are on the fence about watching it, please consider seeing it and supporting Argentinean horror cinema
Loved it! I’m not Argentinian but as a Latina I kinda felt proud of the awesome job they did. It is now one of my faves and I’m looking forward to seeing more Argentinian horror
@@mabetgc i suggest “Aterrados” it’s the previous movie of this same director 😊
Definitely! Next one on my list 👌🏼
The Nightingale is about the nature of friendship. It is about how friendship and mutual trust can be forged between two people from two completely different worlds. So,do not rely on opinions and descriptions because you may overlook something really interesting and inspiring.
i can’t recommend the podcast “too scary; didn’t watch” enough for those of us that don’t like horror but are still morbidly curious or those of us with a low tolerance for certain things or strong boundaries!
I watched Soft and Quiet without knowing anything about it and thinking it was going to be a slow burn horror movie… and as soon as I finished it I wished I could erase it from my mind. I had the worst time ever watching it, it’s one of those movies that leave you feeling nauseous and empty inside. I’d recommend you stay away from it.
On the other hand I also watched Titane without knowing what I was getting into and I loved it! It’s more of a drama with REALLY WEIRD parts but it’s definitely not a traumatic watch. It’s just super freaking weird.
Had the exact same experience with Soft and Quiet.
Seconding this, along with 'The Nightingale', that kind of horror where the only outcome is inflicted trauma through absolute battery just doesn't do it for me. I didn't learn anything new or different about the way humans can be irredeemably awful with no consequences. Wasted time, wasted energy.
Soft and Quiet was dumb. It's like that old movie I Hate Your Guts, except the filmmakers weren't in on the joke and employed no ironic distance whatsoever.
I watched a movie called “Bad Meat” has James Franco in it also. The movie was wild most people wouldn’t like it but I actually found myself intrigued by it. Idk if anyone has seen it though. I always enjoy b rated horror movies there either so stupid you laugh or there out of the box of what Hollywood would produce.
Your synopsis of When Evil Lurks is pretty accurate!! I super get why it would not be for you but I did not realize that I was getting into a VERY good and VERY disturbing film with it and I was super impressed by it since I didn’t have any expectations. Super recommend if it sounds interesting to a neutral party and it sounds like something they can handle! Definitely disturbing though so be well aware!
Just stumbled across your video here and I loved this video. You have earned a subscriber with your open talk on boundaries. So much love this attitude. We all have them, some people are just more clear on admitting them. Keep it up.
Nightingale was so freaking beautful!
as much as having boundaries is great, it's also important for people to remember that just because you watch something doesn't mean anything deeper than that, like you don't care any less about children just because you're willing to see a movie where something happens to a child. That's my fear whenever I see this topic come up because people DO take it there. Hence why I almost never talk about the kind of horror movies I might watch to just anyone.
Your vids are awesome. I love knowing what people's boundaries are and why they won't watch movies. I personally love TERRIFIER, but I totally get how it's not everyone's cup of tea.
I LOVED soft & quiet tho! It is one of the best movies guys and the camera was rolling from beggining to end with no cuts in between, they filmed it in one take!
I have a son, but it’s just a movie. I can separate from fiction and reality personally. I get how it’s not for everyone.
I think postpartum hormones just change everything 🥲
Great list! I was just thinking about how much child torture and death scenes there are in the Terrifier movies and that's just not something I am 100% comfortable with. Videos like yous make me feel better to know I am not alone with this mentality and that's okay to skip out!
Loving this new series!
Love the list! And completely understand what you mean about the "having a child changes you." After becoming a dad, some things i just can't anymore!
Great video! I would only like to point out that The Nightingale is not a horror movie, but a historical drama (a good one!). That being said, the scene you refer to is certainly disturbing
The Nightengale has a great monologue at the end that I think you would appreciate.
I will never get over how much I appreciate you for legitimizing those of us who don't like extreme gore and all that as "still real horror fans". I've always been more of a paranormal/psychological horror person and never liked the gore-fests. It's all horror, though - and it was always hard to hear people dismiss those of us who just like a different kind of horror. You're a real one, and I love your videos!
Love these videos. Boundaries are great. Everyone should have them; even if they vary quite a bit. Only psychopaths lack any boundaries. For me, I've never been okay with horror movies that show or dwell on the killing of the helpless. So that rules out kids, animals, and torture/snuff movies.
If you liked JAWS, then you voided your own rule.
I see your point, but "Bruce" was the killer, not the victim. And, as an apex predator, he wasn't helpless. It's a big difference for me, if the story had people avoiding a predatory animal vs. humans torturing or killing a captive animal.
people who do or have watched movies with those things in it aren't inherently depraved though - you're not some morally upstanding individual for having movie preferences.
Yeah, each person has different boundaries and it's okay to set them in different places.
As a mother, who also loves horror and now my kids love horror (they’re teens), I am 100% with you on Terrifier 3! With the Terrifier series, they seem to just try and mainly make “reaction” movies. So, I can see them having Art kill her because of the whole controversy. Art is just disgusting, I consider it more of a gross series vs horror. In all the classics, we never actually see the kid being ripped apart. I think it’s a giant pass for me.
YUPPPP THANK YOU!! i wasn’t a fan of the second, it just wasn’t good, there was no reason to watch it besides shock horror.
Some of us love gore. I hâte classic slashers because the deaths are so boring. Saw is my favorite series and anything gory and bloody has my attention. I find it fascinating how good the effects are and I’m veryyyy desensitized from my own trauma and nothing scares me anytmore, but extreme gore gives me sinethibg
I don’t mean to criticize but I find it very fascinating that people enjoy slashers that don’t actually show anything but are bothered by slashers that include actual slashing lol.
Maybe the difference is that your brain doesn’t automatically fill in the visual of what the scene must logically include, so for you there’s just…a mental void where the gore hypothetically would be?
For me, that would be like watching a nature documentary on birds that never actually shows any birds on screen. If you’re gonna make a slasher, slash! But I’m a fan of practical effects in general so maybe that’s it.
@@youtubename7819 i completely get what you’re saying!! i am a practical effects junkie myself, i love watching them and seeing the work behind them and how cool it is, its a profession ive dreamed of working in. however i just find terrifier 2 to be a poor use of it, the effects were fantastic and looked disgusting in a good way, but it was backed by the absolute worst story possible for this character. art is genuinley so scary, he has no rhyme or reason to his attacks, he just sees you and you’re instantly a target. the story could’ve been so much better, but it’s just a loose story tied loosely together by extreme gore, which is so disappointing. the saw franchise is a good example, it has a very long, intricate and sometimes dumb convoluted story that always leaves you wanting more, and the first terrifier seems like it could’ve lead into that, but then they just made the absolute most bland story to ever go with it. while i was amazed by the gore, this movie would’ve been more impactful with a good story
@@int3rn3tg1rl7 yeah I didn’t like the plot of terrifier 2. It’s dumb how he’s obviously her dad or whatever and the way they tried to foil her against the terrifier is dumb. It would be better if it was just like the first one - nothin but slash.
So I thought the practical effects were good and were the only thing that made the movie enjoyable. There’s also something so silly and enjoyable about how the pandemic happened when they were filming the “bleach” kill and so they just…kept making that one longer and worse and worse cus they couldn’t get more people on set lol.
Like I gotta appreciate how their limitations led them to push the practical effects to their farthest limit and create something not even I was expecting lol.
Honestly The nightingale’s opening sa is brutal but it kinda turns into a beautiful movie, which I didn’t expect
You are right.I agree with a lot of your points. Thanks for your video! Regards from Iceland.
Sarah, you mentioned Lars Von Trier... Have you ever seen "Dancer in the Dark"? It's not a horror movie, but it's directed by him. It stars Bjork (yes, the Icelandic singer) as a factory worker who's losing her eyesight, and her attempts to get money so her son can have an operation to prevent the same thing happening to him. It's really good, but pretty depressing.
Such a powerful movie, great you remembered and recommended! :) I would include Dogville also, unique!
This is one of my all time favourite movies . What a heartbreaking movie
I've watched so many disturbing movies but after watching The Sadness in the movie theater for the first time ever I was genuinely so scared to go to sleep because I was scared of dreaming about the movie. after watching it I felt kinda depressed for couple days as well that never happens I'm like numb to horror lol.
the part that got me probably is how the zombies were always like smiling and being so happy while doing the most horrifying things to people
Agreed so disturbing the smiling made it worse
That movie was so over the top with the gore and violence its become goofy.
I hate zombie movies so I stayed away from it. Is it really good?
@@cyberspace7208 I don’t like zombie movies that much either but I did like this one even though it was so disturbing
just be prepared that there is so much gore like as soon as the movie starts and then almost nonstop for the rest of the movie but I did find the plot interesting still
For me, I am a huge horror fan. I will never watch the mega extreme or torture films. I did watch Martyrs, and I found it to be a masterpiece. But will never watch again.
"When Evil Lurks" though, is in my opinion one of the best horror films in a while. Its nasty and disturbing but not depressing like some orher films. Its worth watching!
Thanks for talking about When Evil Lurks! Totally get your POV
God I actually watched The Nightingale despite everything I heard about the premier. I regretted it, I felt sick in the beginning where the movie is obviously at its worst. And even when skipping through it the rest was just a lot. I felt so depressed for a while after. Make sure you watch out for your mental health!
Yup. It's a fantastic, important movie due to the setting and subject matter, but I don't recommend it to anyone who isn't in a good place mentally. It's a LOT.
I don't blame you for skipping through it
@@sVieira151 Nightingale is one of my favourites, but I also will not recommend it to people unless they're in a very healthy mental space and/or have not dealt with the themes in the film.
Started "Soft and Quiet" and promptly stopped it. A lot of other movies you mentioned are on my No Watchlist too. Thanks for doing videos on the important subject of boundaries in horror.
Me too lmfao like why was this movie even made. I’ve watched messed up movies but this one feels like a pointless watch
@@missebonie7169 The point was to show how hate and group think can go from "harmless" meetings, jokes, etc to escalation of full on violence. The one take style illustrates the growing tension perfectly. It's a depiction of people who are seemingly "normal" towns people... business owners, teachers, soccer moms, etc. That's what makes it even more disturbing because it's reality. The scene where the teacher casually brags to the group about sabotaging her black student... That's real racism hiding in plain site.
Thanks for another great video!
Your hair look so pretty sarah! Love your videos ✨️
I think Tucker and Dale Vs Evil has such a deep sincerity that’s hard to replicate, which makes it so good
Girl I can’t wait to watch this later lol you’ve been on fire with this series😅
Having a baby absolutely changes you!! Haha. My husband and I watched Pet Cemetery and it hit SOO different when we had our first child. My husband and I were screaming at the TV! 😂😭
The Nightingale was a beautifully shot movie. The SCENE that is known is mild than a lot of mainstream horror deaths.
Love your honesty
You don’t have to watch movies that are too disturbing for you!❤
Long time subscriber, first time commenting. I love these lists and agree with your views.
I was curious if you’ve done a video on non gory (or less graphic than usual) horror movies. I love horror but I don’t love the SA, R***, anything dealing with sweet babies, etc. But I LOVE psychological horror. I’d love a list of recommendations.
She has a 10 movies w no gore video!!
Can I just say I’ve been watching you for years. I wish I had you as a best friend because you have shown nothing but your golden light. Which is amazing because we are talking about horror 😊😊
I'm in the same boat as you being a "picky" horror movie fan who has boundaries on certain things.
Love u for helping to normalize that cuz all my friends just look at me funny when I try to explain it to them
I think the Terrifier 3 thing will be a bait and switch and he doesn't harm the child and the blood we do see is someone else's blood (like the parents as you were suggesting) as both scenes are out of context
i think this, too.
Or at most it will be implied rather than explicitly seen
I think the Nightingale is incredible personally but absolutely cannot recommend it. 'That' scene is one of multiple disturbing scenes and it is one of the more graphic moments I've seen- very hard to watch. Same with the House that Jack Built, definitely one of my favourite 'extreme' horror films but it is intense. Also I'm glad we agree on Melancholia, literal masterpiece
Agreed. I recommend it only to people who are mentally in a good place and feel capable of handling such heavy topics.
I think the film is harrowing yet truly beautiful. It's an important film, but it's not for everyone.
I respect you for having boundaries and normalizing it
happy death day and freaky was really what got me into horror - especially as someone who's easily startled - but i completely understand if that style of horror comedy sets you off. chris landon and michael kennedy have a very specific style of both comedy and horror and its really different strokes for different folks. totally respect your decision!
The house that Jack built is one of the strangest things I’ve ever watched. It’s so surreal. There are a couple of scenes I avoided. I usually can handle a lot … but not interested in animal harm. But then it takes such a weird turn. I can’t even explain what the hell happened at the end. It was quite an experience.
I saw the uncut/unrated version and my god..never again
Just watched, When Evil Lurks, and it was really very good.
There's some disturbing scenes, but they serve the film and are there to illustrate
the idea that when Evil is in front of you, it does not care if you are man, woman, child, old or young.
The scenes were done well, but it wasn't "over the top gore" like Terrifier (and i also love Terrifier).
Very haunting, atmospheric film, with some well placed gore.
I love both terrifier snd when evil lurks and I agree. When evil lurks is shocking and, at times, gruesome but it is not extremely gory and disgusting. But maybe I’m just desensitized to gore given i didn’t even look away once during terrifier 2 haha! But I do agree horror can be very gâté keepy. Tbh I don’t like classic slashers. I find them boring, predictable, and just never got into them
to me, it's an excellent movie in general, not just horror. but i'm argentinian so maybe i'm not being bias hahaha
@@_SunscreenQueen_ I grew up in the 80's, so i kinda love the genre.
Check out "Just before Dawn," and "The Burning."
Those are some decent slashers, though both films are quite different in their approach.
I really loved the original Terrifier more than the sequel, because the sequel alluded to a back story
involving the girl's Dad and some Sci Fi elements, that struck me as odd.
I liked the idea of Art, in his raw form, just stalking the streets because he was some lunatic.
I hope the story doesn't evolve into some, "I am your father...and i was murdered by a clown,
who later possessed me...."
i watched the house that jack built for the first time a couple years ago and loved it. i thought it was sick and twisted and demented and beautifully done.... i watched it again and only got half way through before having to turn it off. boundaries change and that's okay!!
I never asked for it, and don't want to spoil it for those that haven't seen it yet, but a recent horror movie went the "child," route and I never expected it, and it was absolutely brilliant; But I totally agree, context is everything.
i’m so interested to hear your thoughts on the new horror parody “It’s a Wonderful Knife”.
i liked “Freaky” so i thought i’d like it, but i really didn’t vibe with this one. i’d love to hear your perspective as someone who doesn’t love the subgenre but i also don’t wanna subject you to a bad movie lol
i commented about the sadness before and im glad you looked into it! also im extremely sensitive to child death but the house that jack built weirdly didnt bother me, maybe it was too exaggerated? though there is EXTREMELY realistic animal violence, the only time ive ever been uhh.. made sick.. from a movie
also for a lot of these you could totally watch @MistaGG cover them, he makes it extremely funny and a lot easier to handle (especially soft and quiet, bc its actually very stupid)
Thank you for this comment!! Im one of those weird people where child deaths dont particularly bother me, though idk how id feel if it were super graphic as most child deaths in horror are still off screen or not that bad, but animal cruelty.. i HATE being bombarded with it in horror movies, whether it looks real or not, and dont even get me started on the sounds, i immediately have to cover my ears. I probably wouldve watched this movie if your comment hadnt also mentioned the animal violence.
@@cloudeia6894 you can easily skip the scene as its thankfully very short. its not extremely violent but just sadistic and realistic. the website does the dog die should have a lot of details about it as well! they r an extremely useful tool for watching any piece of media but especially darker/horror ones
I don't like this approach to horror or movies in general of trying to judge something without watching it. You do you, and I get it, you're protecting yourself.
I'm a parent and what has changed is that father/child stories hit harder for me. Luckily I enjoy horror just the same and When Evil Lurks was such a cool ride!
I think you can handle “disturbing“ scenes in When Evil Lurks because some of those scenes happened off-screen
Completely agree! The only part I think she'd not want to see is the part with the dog and the child.
But it wasn't as bad as I initially thought it was going to be. It didn't go the route I had expected. & the movie was a great movie.
The dog and child scene could be really hard on her being not even a year postpartum. My child is 3 and I still have trouble watching violence towards children in movies (which wasn’t as much of a problem before I had one).
There’s a few scenes and I feel in general the way kids are portrayed is a little heavier/darker than most movies even if it’s not kids getting harmed
I’d definitely disagree. THAT scene would cross a boundary for Sarah I think, it wasn’t ok for me as someone who would love to be a mother. I don’t usually get triggered by that kind of content either, but I felt totally separate from myself when that scene happened.
I think just skipping that scene would work
When Evil Lurks is from Argentina not Spain
and is phenomenal 😭
Yea I’ve been watching your videos for a while and although I love nightingale and the story is so beautiful and moving it will make you cry. And it does have ra p scene and baby murder scene that really is heart shattering but as a whole it’s an important story to tell.. but I totally get the trigger areas for u with this one
totally fine to put limits on yourself based on what you are comfortable with. I've been collecting horror films for about 20 years and every once and awhile I find that I need to pull a film off the shelf for good. If it doesn't represent you or your values, there is no point holding on to it.
I've seen THE NIGHTINGALE and honestly, it's not even really a horror film. Yes, there's SA near the beginning, but I wouldn't call that the focus on the movie. The majority of the film is a quest that deals with Australia's racial history.
i love these vids because i always want to watch the movies u list lmao. but i love that u are normalizing setting boundaries and taking care of yourself when watching horror!!!!
Everyone has their own tastes and should watch what is for them...... going outside your norm isn't a bad thing that's how you find hidden gems that you wouldn't have otherwise seen but i agree no one should shame another for personal preferences no matter the reason
I absolutely do use these videos as recommendations! I love disturbing films, and funnily enough it’s easier to find them through videos like these than the “top 10 disturbing films”. So thank you!
I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see a creator acknowledge their boundaries. I grew up in an extremely religious home (almost cult levels) and although I am not very religious anymore - I still cannot watch movies that focus on anything demonic. It sends me into full panic attacks and severe anxiety - which kind of sucks because horror is my favorite genre. Everyone always looks at me weird and never understands but I so appreciate a creator normalizing healthy boundaries for yourself! ❤
The when evil lurks section is completely understandable,, I watched it with my boyfriend only knowing about the first disturbing scene and the later scenes we both had our eyes closed because it was so intense
As a person who has similar boundaries im glad you point out these movies to me because sometimes i forget to look for trigger warnings before watching as i hope that we are past the point of using pointless sa in horror movies
THANK YOU for talking about The House That Jack Built! This is the first horror movie I was looking forward to based on others’ reviews and I could not finish it. I got half an hour in, felt like it was going nowhere and was so brutal towards women for no good reason. Made my skin crawl in the worst way.
Love these videos. I’m pretty squeamish, so this is very helpful to hear about movies I should be wary of. Your hair looks great, btw
Soft & Quiet was deeply disturbing... Every violence happened on-screen, it's not in-your-face violence but the mindset the people had was the one that disturbed me the most. I went into it blind and had a visceral reaction to a shot of a PIE....
Not trying to convince you here but as a longtime fan i think youd really love the Nightingale! I'm happy to tell you the exact minutes to skip so you can enjoy cause ugh its so good 😂❤
I get why you don't want to watch Titane, but not only is it not that graphic, it's barely even a horror movie. It's just a really good sci-fi thriller/drama, one of my favorite movies of 2021
it’s tame AF. not enough graphic scene
Yess I was confused by that too. Everyone has their limits but I would not consider Titane an extreme movie at all. If she's thinking it's anywhere as graphic as the director's other movie, Raw, it's not at all.
I know you’ve been off the AHS train for years now, but I’m still loving it. NYC (last season) was BRILLIANT imo…one of the best seasons of the entire show. A TRUE American Horror Story! Great video, as always, Sarah.
Omg the AIDS crises was a horrible time and I lived in NYC in the 80s so I know first hand...but American Horror Story NYC was just a great big self indulgent mess that seemed to believe that it's subject matter granted it a free pass to make one of the darkest periods in recent history as boring as possible. I kept hoping it was going to be a progressive re-imagining of "Cruising" as a sort of French New Extremity Grand Guignol version of Diary of the Plague Year....and omg if they could have gotten Dennis Cooper to write the screenplay. Not even close.
Delicate is actually really really fun. Its just Rosemary's Baby rehashed but it's goofy gory schmaltz and you should just close your eyes when something overly fetus-y happens.
i was a little embarrassed to realize i was totally using this video for recommendations until she mentioned it at the end hahahah
Such an important point. I think trailers for films should have warnings as well, saw the one for “night swim” at the cinema today. Water, especially the ocean or dark water is one of my biggest fears and it took a lot of exposure therapy to get back into swimming pools, rivers with my dog, and walking along the coast at the beach. I don’t want to undo all that work (which it deffo will) even though it looks like a great film.
I’ve been a parent 17 years. Made no difference to my horror viewing. Like my late Mother said, “It’s just rubber and ketchup!” 🤷🏻♂️
Good for you? 😭 there’s also a clear difference between having a newborn child and a 17 year old - a new mother is already going to have a ton of anxiety surrounding her kid and some topics will only accelerate that insane amount of anxiety
I just watched When Evil Lurks yesterday and was looking for your review for it! But I totally understand why you wouldn't want to watch it ❤
I've watched your videos for a long time and I feel like we have really similar taste in what disturbs us and what we are okay with (Youre the only person I've seen as distubed by The Lodge as I was.)
I will say that when I watched When Evil Lurks I got extremely upset and went to go turn the TV off because I didn't feel I could finish it. I eventually did, but I've never had a movie affect me to the point where I literally went to turn it off. I watch a lot of horror - loved The Sadness oddly enough. But with W.E.L. all I could picture was my own daughter. Love that you know your own limits :)
I had my baby in April and feel the same way about children in horror films now. My threshold for stuff like that is significantly lower. If you know you know. Having a kid changes a lot, psychologically, physically, emotionally, all of it. I’ll always be a huge horror fan, but anything with children just hits different now no matter what genre. My husband and I rewatched LOOPER the other day and I burst into tears over the end this time. Just hits different when you’re a parent.
I totally can relate with my first born. I couldn’t watch game of thrones with a certain scene for awhile. I couldn’t finish that last few shit seasons for a while😂
pisces 😍
i just can't do any of the terrifier movies. i hate mean spirited horror movies that just have extreme gore for shock value. i don't mind extreme gore as long as it serves a purpose or is portrayed realistically like in a war movie. but the special effects in terrifier aren't even that great so 🤷🏼♂️
I’d love a big list of recommendations next ❤ i’m running short!
I just love the hair!!!❤❤❤
The house that Jack built is criminally underrated. While the movie is brutal, it’s a commentary on art and the human condition. Jack is eventually escorted through dantes inferno and the circles of hell as an allegory for his crimes. A very fascinating concept I suggest checking out.
I respect the fact that she has limits. However, the house that Jack built is a very unique movie. I don’t think the reviews and warning do it justice. Just because it’s presented in such a clever way. The end is pure art. I did skip the animal parts though. But yeah, the house that Jack built may be one of the movies that you can’t rely much on any warnings or reviews. It’s just such a crazy experience. I want to rewatch it purely to focus specifically in the ending.
How did you feel about the child murder in Dr. sleep? That one really disturbed me in the theater
This was a scene my husband and I were really affected by. We normally don't have issues with disturbing scenes but this one hit us.
Yes, same! I was shocked that they went that far, and although the scenario was unlikely (demons feeding off pain) it made me think of all the kids out there who are abused by parents/carers and it was just not enjoyable to watch.
i wish i had never watched soft & quiet... it was just so deeply upsetting for no reason tbh i think you're making the right choice there
i know you did it a few years ago but if you do have more, i would love another “christmas/holiday” horror movie recs!
