- There have been prevailing rumors over the years that Kevin Williamson had to completely rewrite the ending of Scream 2 after a script leak, early into production. This mythical story is easy to get lost in, as the idea of different killers in a Scream movie is just about as exciting as can be. So let's take a look at who would have been the killers and what would have been different as we look at the alternate version of Scream 2.

I just realised Gale is "taken out of action" in every movie. First she's left for dead in the car/collapsed on Dewey on the porch, this one she's shot and lying in the orchestra pit, third she's tied to the chair, fourth she's in hospital, fifth she's again shot and lying in the garden.
She just spends the finales lying around and hanging out 😂 Though to be fair in Scream 5 she helps out with Amber’s demise.
yeah but in scream 5 gale actually had a hand in killing one of the killers this time, the closest she’s gotten to helping take down the killers was the original where she actually saved sidney’s ass by shooting billy. something you don’t see in these movies since she’s usually there to distract or confuse the killers so the main final girl can escape or plot how to take the killers down

There could've been a really interesting plot point in Cotton having people constantly accuse him of being a killer and him just going, "ok, fine, I guess I am!"
I always felt bad for Cotton. It's gotta be rough being accused of being a killer. Even after you're cleared people would still see you as one. Then, when things are finally going good for him he ends up dying in the 3rd.
Except i don't think a person would become a killer just because people said he was - i like where scream 3 went with him taking advantage of the situation to get famous because that seems the most likely
@@jakkudemoff3043 I mean... a lot of the killers in most of these movies don't have great reasons beyond, "I'm crazy and I like horror movies!" It doesn't feel THAT out of place in the Scream world lol

Yeah but he was just way too obvious and the reveal wouldn't have been very surprising. The most shocking Ghostface reveal is definitely Jill Robert's in Scream 4...I was shocked but kind of pissed at the same time when it turned out to be Jill because I thought she was going to be the new Sidney...I feel like that was Cravens original plan but it got scrapped.
You can't blame Sidney for being paranoid about Derek possibly being the killer, after everything that happened with Billy. Alas, Derek was the real deal.

The scenes with Dewey and Gale make me smile so much. Especially the ones in which he recites parts of her book to her. I grew up on Friends and seeing them interact is good for my soul.
Scream and Scream 2 were just simply AMAZING horror films to me. Written so brilliantly.
I wish I was old enough at the time to see them in theaters.

Yeah the ending of Scream 5 is what dragged it down for me. If not for that, I'd call it very good
I liked the plot twist killer in scream 3 (Roman), i actually felt a sliver of sympathy for him.
Funny u should mention Halle because so far we haven't had any black ghostface killers and Wes Craven RIP originally decided to have Derrick and Halle be the 2 killers for Scream 2 and that idea was eventually scrapped and he went with Mickey and Mrs. Loomis instead. Cotton was way too obvious to be a killer and if he was it wouldn't have been surprising at all.

Hallie as the killer would have been a perfect twist to the movie. Kind of playing off the black characters dying first in horror films trope.

I never liked this ending honestly mainly because I love Derek as a character. I mean Syd had a shit boyfriend who tried to kill her and now in college she finally finds a good well-rounded guy and he dies in front of her eyes and will now never know what could have been. She even wears the necklace he gave her in 3. That honestly above all makes Scream 2 a great movie to me.
I always hated how Sydney just walks off at the end of the film all by herself, all her friends dead.
What did you hate about it? And what else would she have done? At that point, there’s not much else to do. Except maybe lie down for a nap after that whole circus of a night.

Enjoyed this. I personally liked Cotton never being the killer. I think Scream two as it was was fine but I guess you could argue didn't take enough risks therefore in meta works naturally being the slightly lesser sequel. I like the making the best sequel of all time idea. Maybe that couldve made it more special. Would have obviously impacted later films.
I'd like you to talk about Wes craven s new nightmare. I this this is criminally under acknowledged and lead onto scream. In my view a better film too.
It would’ve been interesting if Cotton did eventually lose it after he spent all that time in jail. A little too silly though and the rewrite did a better trick with him
My theory is that the original script did indeed leak, and Williamson cobbled together the decoyHallie&Derek-script after that. They made sure that it spread faster than the original script, and then he wrote a third script, the one that became the actual theatrical version. It would explain why Craven complained that he got some pages only minutes before shooting a scene. And it would explain why characters (like those played by Marisol Nichols, Portia de Rossi and Rebecca Gayheart) just disappeared out of nowhere, and why whole subplots (like the killers murdering people in the order that their namesakes got killed by Billy and Stu) were dropped mid-movie. In the final ending, there is no reason for Maureen and Phil to die in the opening scene.
The concept of Ghostface making his own movie actually came in Scream 4; I mean, they legit tried film all of their murders to make a movie, lol.
Weird because for the first half of Scream 2, I thought the killers were going to be Dewey and Hallie.

I wish I knew there was spoilers for the scream 2022. I didn't get to see it yet sadly. But to be fair they were doing comparisons so I can't be mad.

If this was the original script, then they made the right call in doing a rewrite. Then again, it's a very good tactic that has been used for decades now, to have multiple versions of the script available, that way if there are leaks, those versions are obsolete and don't result in too many spoilers.

Randy was the third killer in scream and faked his death in Scream 2. He has been behind everything this whole time.

The story about the leak and eleventh hour rewrite all being a myth makes sense to me, as the final product of Scream 2 feels very cohesive with what we got. The twists and turns are natural, with hints and red herrings well placed throughout. This would suggest that what we got was what was planned, unless the "leak" happened prior to filming altogether, and Williamson wrote a brand new script outright. Williamson is the Aaron Sorkin of witty teen suspense/horror. I don't think his stuff could be very easily cut and pasted by editors, secondary writers, or even himself. His story sequences are methodical and Scream 2 is simply too good to have been a lucky break. Scream 3 - and I like Scream 3 - is another story. The script by Ehren Kruger, based on a treatment by Williamson, feels edited and altered throughout. Part of this is simply due to Williamson not being the helm, but there were also issues with scheduling conflicts and the media pressure in the wake of the Columbine tragedy. The twists and turns, clues and red herrings are not are clear. They're very uneven. Scream and Scream 2 are not like this.
The whole commit murder and getting executed as a means to get famous was done first and best by John Waters in Female Trouble. Divine's unhinged monolog a she's strapped to the electric chair is Oscar worthy!

One thing that you kept going on and on about is that if Derek and Haley were the killers and they met on a message board yes it would’ve been like scream 2022 but that means scream 2022 couldn’t go down like that it would’ve been completely different.

No way cotton wasn't the original killer. He would have made a perfect villain, and his character was connected to the original. Sydney says in the first one she saw him leaving her house. Plus, he was too high profile an actor to take a minor role in the first one. They had to have pitched him on the villain in the second. You never really see Mrs Loomis in the second, which is why it made sense they on look y shot her scenes after rewrites, which is why she was only in a couple of them. Won't believe it until Kevin Williamson says it isn't true.

I like the ending as is. I mean, the boyfriend thing had kinda been done in the first one. So for the second movie to change it up, made sense for me. However, I do think scream 2022 and scream season 3 2019, evenly divided up parts of the original script for 2 and used them in their own way. I know people shit on the tv series often, but season 3 had a huge fall in the ending too.

As much as I enjoyed Scream 2 (aside from that horrible opening scene), the series should’ve ended with the original. The sequels just became more and more contrived.

I was such a MEGA fan of Scream that I absolutely did not like S2 at all. Couldn't stand the new characters, hated they killed Randy, thought the acting sucked and besides the humor it's almost as bad as 3.

I think the Derek and Haille script is 100 percent fake. I just don’t see KW doing the boyfriend thing right away in the next movie. It would have been really stupid. After all Sidney went through, I would assume she went around with her guard up for a long time and it was hard for people to earn her trust. Then when she finally put trust into 2 people and they both would’ve been the killers, would have said a lot about Sidney’s character. Any ending would have been better than that. I also agree making Cotton the killer at some point was a missed opportunity, especially since it was Ehren Krugers script that killed him, who knows what direction KW would of went with that character moving forward
Kevin is lying. Wes Craven has said many times that he himself, not Kevin, had to rewrite the movie, as Kevin left to work on Dawson's Creek.
Kevin Also denies working on Scream 3, yet people have said he was there. He's even credited as producer
I actually read that for Scream 3 Craven himself was going to play the John Milton character which would've been amazing to see but he decided to stick with only directing instead and Lance Henrickson took the role.
I always felt like the "leaked" ending actually made more sense than the ending we got. Timothy Olyphant is barely a character, and has maybe three or four lines before the reveal, so him being one of the killers is just really anticlimactic for me. The boyfriend and roommate being killers would have been retreading the first movie, but at least those are actual characters with a connection to Syd.

Not only that, he was link to both murders, CIci and Randy, both were part of the cinema class, that will be a big red flag, even for the professor of the class, that created a big plot hole, if we saw this in retrospective.

From what I understand it was an intentional (and fake) leak to keep the real ending off the internet. The cast members didn't even know the real ending till they shot it.

I believe it was a dummy script/purposefully leaked fake script mostly because the movie makes too much sense to be a rush job, and we have all seen what happens when you ACTUALLY have to rewrite a Scream script in the middle of filming. They did their best with Scream 3, but Roman could not have done everything alone. 🤷 It's my head canon that Angelina isn't dead and that she was the second killer. I could see her talking him into "letting her stay dead," and they'd love happily ever after in some glamorous city or something. How did I get into Scream 3? I'm done. I'm done.
