Scream Vs A Nightmare on Elm Street | Face Off

- Wes Craven, the Horror Maestro, launched some of the most terrifying killers in cinema history. Both of his horror classics feature an iconic villain who hunts down suburban teens in a variety of inventive and, of course, bloody methods. First, 1984’s A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET introduced audiences to the supernatural murderer that kills his victims within their own dreams - FREDDY KRUEGER. Later, Craven would follow up with the 1996 meta-horror film, SCREAM, which subverts the genre tropes in its own twisted way and reignited interest in studio horror films. Both movies changed the horror landscape forever in their own unique way, but which of these brilliant creations deserves the slasher crown? There’s only one way to find out: FACE OFF!

R.I.P Wes. He was a diamond in the genre.
I love them both as well but for me Freddy will always be scarier because with Ghostface they are only human so you can run, drive, or even fly away from them. With Freddy, it didn’t matter where you go. You have to sleep eventually.
gave me night terrors lol i blame my brother lol
I pick Freddy in this match-up and you bring up a good point too
I saw both of these on opening day at the theatre. The nightmare on elm street audience was like being at a rock concert and was buzzing even when the movie was over.
The fact that u can die in yours sleep is scary enough Freedy is the baddiest of them all
You just convinced me to get the Friday Nightmare series on dvd as an early Christmas present. I watched every episode back in 1989.
It’s not that much on Amazon I don’t think
NIcee
Pretty sure it was called Freddy's Nightmares..
I love both franchises, but Elm Street gets the vote by a whisker.
Without Nightmare, there is no SCREAM…
Doesn’t make it better, Scream is an improvement
@@p.taylor981 It does matter because without Nightmare, there would be no Scream “improvement”. Freddy will ALWAYS be the bigger horror icon, compared to Ghostface.
Actually if it wasn’t for New Nightmare there would be no Scream. Yes the fire was ignited by NoES first, but the “meta” aspect was solidified by New Nightmare
Exactly. That is why New Line Cinema is referred to as the house that Freddy built.
@@izzy3166 that is the main reason nightmare has to win this face off. Both are iconic franchises though.
Freddy would dispatch Ghostface without breaking a sweat.
Definitely Nightmare on elm Street
I agree
I also agree
Nightmare on Elm Street a complete sweep.
Drew Barrymore said it best the first one was good but the rest sucked.
@@ahahahaha496 Yeah but the 3rd one is good too. And the 2nd was isn’t nearly as bad as people say I feel like.
@@TheNuketendolike the 2nd. Love the third and fourth ANOES. This comment was supposed to be a cheeky comment about how I felt about the Scream franchise. Ended up in the wrong comment thread somehow. How embarrassing.
Today we're pitting the ultimate evil on earth; a child molester turned dream demon VS two kids in Halloween costumes!
Nah, Elm Street won this before it started.
Ghost face for me because the scary part of him is that Ghostface could be anyone you know and you’d have no idea the innocent person you always interacted with was a psychopath. Freddy is a dream demon who says a joke every kill.
You should a face off with Scream 2 vs Scream 4. I love how fair the rounds are.❤ I ❤
They have done a Scream 2 vs Scream 4
@@AbominableQueer Zach Cherry did one, but I couldn’t find one for JoBlo Original.
@@AbominableQueer There’s one for Scream 3 vs Scream 4.
I think the biggest advantage that the Nightmare franchise has over Scream is that Freddy is not just a face, but also an iconic character. With all Scream movies being whodunnits, we never are given too much time to delve into the twisted minds of any of the killers. We may see these characters throughout the movies, but we only get a few minutes with their "killer sides". Ghostface's repertoire of scary phone calls and quirks like wiping the blood off the knife with the glove are all shared between multiple characters. Which makes sense, with the franchise being so meta, but at the end of the day, the killers are mysteries for the first 90 minutes or so of each movie.
Freddy is only ever a mystery in the first movie, which was all about him anyway. From Part 2 onwards, we're already familiar with him and understand how dangerous and unhinged he is. That gave the filmmakers the opportunity to try out new things; just the fact that it's about dreams already opens up virtually infinite room for experimentation.
It's a Scream , baby 🔪
I wish this was done as a franchise vs franchise format, there's so many different characters and plots to go over with both Scream and ANOES. Especially given that Scream has different killers every movie, it would be interesting to compare the different iterations of Ghostface against Freddy's changing personality.
Though I love Nancy to death, her character essentially stays the same through the franchise. There's never a serious shift in her character, she's been strong and stubborn from the get-go and nothing changes through Parts 1, 3 or 7 if you count it. I think it's criminal that Alice Johnson from parts 4 and 5 is not given her due. To me, she's the only character in the franchise next to Freddy himself that exhibits any form of character development. For Freddy, it's merely a change to letting his sick mind go ballistic but for Alice it's a 180 degree shift from a quiet and meek girl to a badass by the series' standards. Plus, she's the only final girl to survive Freddy in multiple films. (Again, unless you count New Nightmare).
Overall this was a great watch. I think Scream got a little more favor by way of it's entire franchise while ANOES was kind of left to the parameters of it's own film for most of the segments. Despite this, it was fun as always! ////
Alice only survival movies because Freddy had to keep her alive that's the way he got to people and then her baby in part five
That draw felt like a copout
That was really good! I agree with you on most of it except for the sequels part. I would have given that to Scream. One they all got good reviews accept for 3 and the fact that the three main cast members came back for every one is amazing! However, I could never put the original scream over the original Nightmare even the though they are both great! Two of the best not just slasher but best horror movies ever!
Freddy’s Dead instantly catapults the Scream sequels to the top. That movie was purely awful. Nightmare 5 was meh and Nightmare 2 wasn’t very good either, despite slyly being an LGBTQ film way ahead of its time
@@danielprekopa7005 nightmare 2 had some good scenes and it had a good scary tone but, it was kind of all over the place with the plot. I liked Freddy's Dead better than most people. I liked the flashback scenes about Freddy's life. Nightmare 5 was the worst in the series, Super Freddy pretty much says it all!😝
I always thought all the scream movies were just as cheesy as the parodies were
Drew Barrymore said it best the first one was good but the rest sucked.
I don’t feel like these are comparable. Yes they’re both horrors but one is centered in reality with high school boys as the killers vs supernatural killer.
This is great content!!! Just subscribed! What about The Hills Have Eyes old vs new or The Hills Have Eyes vs the hillbillies from Just Before Dawn, just thinking. Awesome work Thank You and keep it up!!
Nightmare for me is the best, simply because it was something new and inventive, Scream is a love letter to all the slashers that came before it, whilst Scream 1 was EXCELLENT, the sequels where basically a re write and of Scream and got very messy and predictable.
When was the article written? Since mentioning the soon to be released 5th movie?
I love Scream, but Nightmare Elm Street takes the cake❤️❤️❤️. I felt Scream had to reference “A Nightmare Elm Street” and other landmark slasher film to be relevant. If it wasn’t meta, it wouldn’t have stood out and be considered as a landmark film the 90s.
When I saw her get pulled through that small window as a small child, it scared the absolute shit out of me.
I'm honored to be this early.. Top 10 ❤️👍
I am more likely to watch Scream or its sequels, but you supported your argument very well!
NOES EVERY DAY and twice on Sunday
FREDDY is the ultimate villain to me because everyone sleeps
18:29 how long has this video been in the pipeline? 🥴
I like them both, Wes was a legend, but I think ANOES just edges it, so agree with the 6/5 results ... I would say the ANOES has Freddy, which is an actual villain ... Scream has ghost-face which is a Scooby type different villain for each movie, so in that way it kills it ...
Love them both
Bonus round for their tv series spin offs
I never like Scream but Freddy has always been my favorite horror icon.
Scream 1. Other than that Nightmare on elm Street dominates.
My two favourite Slasher films. No others come close for me.
I agree on every round but sequels because scream honestly has no bad movie when nightmare arguably has one of the worst sequels in all the franchises from the big 4 of nightmare, Halloween, Friday the 13th, and scream. So it think scream wins the sequel round. So in my book that would be a draw but I do agree nightmare n Freddy are the more iconic all around. For the sake of nightmare winning it works
Scream resurrected the slasher genre
Both good movies but screams opening scene alone wins it for me. Also drew wasn't recast because of a scheduling conflict. It was her idea and wes liked it
Damn u had this one sitting around for a min. I wonder wat other gems ya hiding 🤔
I agree with everything here except for the plot. The scream plot is way better than the Nightmare plot. Like, so much better. I think the main idea of the Freddy Krueger universe is more interesting and creative, due to the dream stuff, but I'd say the first Freddy movie's plot isn't nearly as exciting as Scream.
Nightmare on elm street could of been perfect if they never made Freddy so comedic & campy on parts 4-6 they should of just made him scary like the original in the whole entire franchise.
I await the day that a streaming service focused on horror movies emerges.
For now, it'd be enough if A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise was made available on Netflix, HBO or Disney+.
Shudder
@@harryparsons2750 Unfortunately not available in Europe, at least not yet. But yea :)
Scream is a better franchise overall. No bad sequels, no dumb story, returning characters, it’s realistic and could really happen to any of us. Scream is just superior to all other slashers
Freddy would dispatch ghost face as soon as he or she falls asleep
Scream all day, Freddy is an icon and all but just because it came out before nightmare doesn’t matter to me, I appreciate them both but I absolutely love ghostface
It’s a draw for me. I love both so much.
Scream for me. It's a film that still holds up to this day and I think because it could actually happen adds to it. Plus the twist of two killers is an all-time great. Plus it has so many little moments that you can rematch and catch on multiple viewings. Plus I think the characters and cast are leaps and bounds better.
Damn when did y’all decide to make this?
Round five was a bit unfair because this is supposed to be a face off between the original nightmare and elm Street in the original scream, not the franchises as a whole. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. At the end of the day if I had to pick between the two though I would probably pick nightmare on elm street. They just don't make horror films like that anymore.
The sad part is Jackie could have been an awesome Freddy
For Me I Love Both Movies No Contest.
Both movie's are classic's nightmare on elm Street is the best horror movie of the 80's and Scream is the best horror movie of the 90's but if I had to pick it's Nightmare on elm Street
A Nightmare On Elm Street is my favorite horror series. The first, third, and seventh are my Top 3 of the series. Also, when I gave my Like to this video, it brought the total to 666.
I agree 💯 with you're ratings nightmare on elm street is a clear winner
The Scream sequels are all way better than 80 percent of the Nightmare sequels
That's good
When was this filmed? Came out today but filmed in 2021?
Scream pacing is better, that’s the only thing that makes it bette
Wes Craven is THE ONLY winner here!!
All heil King Craven!
Wes Craven is an icon himself❤
Nightmare on elm street!!!!
It's hard to believe A Nightmare on Elm St. had a bigger effect on its audience than Scream did on mine.
I imagine actually seeing tinas nightmare and robert englunds reveal as freddy krueger was just that good in cinemas. I swear if they did screenings of the original NOES today its no doubt better than the scream
@@POOPGOD999 The first hour of Scream was genuinely scary, thinking "no way this girl's gonna live after what happened to the first girl"--then this bi!ch next to me says out loud to the bi!ch in the bathroom scene "oh yeah, and you have a big butt!" and it turned into a comedy
Did you forget to upload this last December? 😂
Scream for sure
Scream 1 saved the slasher genre
“A Nightmare on Elm Streeet” is more revolutionary because of its unique premise.
Nightmare over Scream all day long.
Scream, all the way.
I'll take nightmare. Scream overall has had better movies (3 arguably being the only "dud") but without nightmare, no scream...new nightmare if course being the prototype for scream
Even with 3 being the only dud, I give it some credit due to its quick turnaround because there was a whole other story that they cancelled due to Columbine
Scream
I think Nightmare on Elm Street is a better film than Scream, but Scream has much better sequels
I’m not mad at the final verdict but sequels being a draw is criminal, Scream takes that by far.
yee
Nightmare was never scary to me…I stand with Scream
Freddy will make you scream lol 😆😈
SCREAM IS THE BEST !
Gotta go with Scream for how thrilling and timeless it is despite the films its satirizing. Nightmare has unfortunately had consistently less than stellar mains and acting aside from Robert where I never care for the characters or am on the edge of my seat watching because they’re such throwaways. Nancy is the only good and compelling main and shes in a fraction of the movies. the acting dates the franchise so much too unfortunately. You gotta respect how visually iconic it is tho but narratively almost all of them fall flat :(
Freddy rules
On the idea of comparing wes craven movies and picking which you like more for different reasons, sure this works as a comparison, but I think the movies are just so different to compare the two, just straight up as which one is "scarier" or "better" I don't think comparing these two works all that well.
I'm willing to bet %90 of us are just gonna default to
"Nightmares killing me is scarier than a pair of movie obsessed high schoolers. I can't avoid dreams, experts are always telling me "we'll never fully understand how dreams work" and again, scream is just 2 dudes that are perfectly avoidable(so much so that movie becomes parody if you re-watch it knowing the killer's identities, and that's assuming you didn't figure it out before it was revealed)"
Honestly the only shocking thing I recall catching me off guard in Scream was that there was 2 killers and.... that's.... not much to try and blow minds with lol
Fun video. I would argue that regarding the sequel round, Scream wins. There are no bad Scream movies (yes, even Scream 3), while plenty of shitty Freddie movies.
Craven vs craven.
Sweet 1st like and comment 😊🤟💀🤟💀
Whatcha talking about! Stu still lives Lmao
I always have to pick Scream, Ghostface will forever be my fav. I also love that it came out the year I was born. I have this poster with ghostface that says "Killin it since 1996" and it actually makes sense XD
Yeah I think Ghostface looks way cooler. Ghostface can blend in and get away by taking off his mask. Freddy's kind of stuck with his. I like Scream more than a Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy is too silly and I just can't get into silly old horror movies.
This is hard the edge goes to scream. The sequals have been great while scream 3 was not received that well it was still 100 times better than Freddy's Dead The Final Nightmare. Scream waa the reason why the slasher craze went nuts
I know What You Did Last Summer
Urban Legend
I still know
Plus scream.2
Scream 3
Urban legend final cut
The mediocre joey lawrence movie - Do you wanna know a secret?
Final stab (bootleg scream 4)
Halloween resurrection.
Jason x
I see none of this happening if Scream & scream 2 were not the success they were
Freddy is iconic but the slasher boom of the 80s was going to be strong with or without freddy. I mean that same year we got Friday the 13th 4 the final.chapter. so while i do love freddy i gotta go with scream.
IMO, The Nightmare cast was better than Scream’s.
Hello....
I think it really comes down to your generation and age I'm an older guy and grew up with elm street and scream came out when I was in high school and to me was in the same niche as other movies and TV shows from the 90s around the same time. I actually like the craft far better than scream. Plus scream is more thriller and not really ultimately a true horror. My opinion anyways
"Nightmare" wins.
Fatality. Wes Craven wins
A draw for sequels. Scream sequels are definitely better than the Nightmare sequels. Scream is better than Nightmare for me because the visual filmmaking is better and has a better story. Love both films though
Scream easily
Am I the only one that can't stand the Scream sequels? I mean the second was almost good until the Sliders guy started dancing and singing on tables. The 4th one was ridiculous with 2 kids that probably weigh about 100 pounds going on a killing spree because jealousy? I mean yep they have a knife but they're still wee little kids. I don't even remember the 5th, tuned out partway through. I don't get why the Scream sequels are remembered with such fondness when back when they were being released they were heavily mocked as being silly.
You're not alone. I can't stand the sequels, especially 2 for the exact reason that you stated. The only one I kind of liked was 4 but it wasn't necessary.
Ghostface is way more scary/realistic
Round 9 a draw? Bullshit. Easily should've gone to scream : More consistency and not one single film in the franchise universally hated.
Without Nightmare there definitely would be no Scream. But truth be told if it wasn’t for New Nightmare there would be no Scream. This is lopsided with a lean towards towards critic reviews that we all know are bogus.
I don’t know why you keep mentioning 2010. Nothing happened I’m 2010…
Classic v 2.0Classic?? Toure de force V Magnum opus??.
Both of these films are comedies. Scream is the better of the two. Neither are “scary” in the least.
