Jaws 3-D: Has It Gotten Better With Time?

- Jaws 3D gets lost in both its franchise and the resurgence of 3D movies in the early 80s. It made a ton of money in theaters but was critically derided, something that it hasn't been able to shake. Does Jaws 3D deserve the hate, or are there morsels of good amongst the chum? Sometimes even a bad movie has merit in watching, and Jaws 3D skirts that line well!

I know its terrible . But I love this film . Easily the one I've watched the most out of all of them .
It's such cheesy , easy watching fun
Ikr! 😅
Sure is. A total guilty pleasure. Used to watch it all the time as a kid.
@@rodtaylor5476 same ! I used to have this on VHS and let it play over and over when I was a kid . So there is so much nostalgia for me with this flick.
I might have to watch it today now if I've got the time .
Jaws 3: "I'm the worst movie ever"
Jaws 4: "Hold my beer"
yeah
i didnt like jaws 4 due to what they did to the younger Brody son, not cool
This movie will always be special for me being the first movie I saw in theaters with my mom who died not much later
I remember this movie fondly because my mum gave me the day of school to go and see it because she knew I loved Jaws and she thought 3D was important life experience. I was 10 and I loved it. I seem to remember reading that the famous shark through the window scene the wanted to do differently but then were told to just get it done on the cheap and had to throw that shit together. I feel bad for all the people who planned for it to be better. But I have a soft spot for it.
Even though the actual shark effect is awful (and yes the original effect was much better you can see it in the HBO the making of Jaws 3, it’s on CZcams) the flooding of water into the control room is very well done and looks totally real, which of course, in a way, it is.
My dad took me to see this at the theater when I was 4-5 years old. I still remember how great it was. Haven't seen it since
For me it's one of those "so bad it's good" movies. I still enjoy watching it. And i miss the dodgy effects and vhs quality lol 80s and 90s movies were so good
RiffTrax riffed it pretty funny
Honestly this was actually my favourite Jaws movie as a kid. Even though I know the original is better I just have fonder memories of 3.
My Aunt took me to see this movie in the theaters when it came out and I may have been to young to watch it but I enjoyed every minute of it and still do till this day so you can say it had a huge impact on me.
I'm firmly in the 'Love It' camp. Louis Gossett Jnr, Dennis Quaid, dolphins, a practical AND a 3D shark!! Nostalgic maybe.
I used to be in denial about this film because of its reputation, but now I can proudly say that I love it and actually prefer watching it to Jaws 2. The concept is great, personally I don’t find the action that dull, the score is phenomenal and the overall vibe is just sort of comfy, it’s a nostalgic trip for me on every viewing.
Yes the effects are terrible, yes they could have done so much more with the concept, and yes it’s really cheesy, but I still love it and find enough good in it to recommend it. In terms of a quality, Jaws 2 is much better, but I like this one more. Sue me. If they ever reboot Jaws, remake this film instead of tarnishing the original.
This holds a special place in my heart. My dad took me and a buddy and a relative to see it in 3-D. It’s fun and goofy at the same time.❤
This is the ONE Jaws movie that deserves a remake.
Wait... Yes. Yes YES!
Definitely deserves a Remake.
Preferably As A Full Blown Comedy.
Yep agreed or maybe just touch up some scenes
@@edgerriceburroughs1477 I would take a horror comedy. Kind of like what Cocaine Bear is looking to be.
I would like the "JAWS III" remake to be based upon Richard Mathe-son's initial story where a pair of great white sharks gets trapped in a saltwater lake and causing terror at a fishing community.
Next to some of the Italian Jaws ripoffs, Jaws 3D (and Jaws The Revenge) looks like an Oscar contender.
Loved this as a kid..my fav part is the tunnel..Lil kid says dad look at the fish, dad looks and says Holy Sht! Lol
The shorts are short enough!
I always had such a crush on Lea Thompson, loved all her movies in the '80s
12/6/22
I remember this movie really well and loved it as a kid. My dad recorded it for my sister and I off the TV and my sister and spent all summer watching it.
Honestly, I feel like Jaws 3 is way better than people give it credit for. If the stupid 3D effects weren’t there, it would probably be much better received. The story is not bad and I thought the tense scenes were done very well. The shots of big mama shark in the dark were intense as hell. I actually held my breath seeing the giant shark most of the time. Now when the stupid 3D effect happens at the end, it is really bad, but imagine that same scene with the giant shark model they used in normal shots coming right at the screen, while shrouded in the dark. Could’ve been one of the most iconic Jaws scenes ever, unironically, if it had been done well.
I was 15 when that movie came out and the trailer scared me more than the movie itself. Yes the 3D format was getting tired even back then.
The original electronic composite FXs should've been kept for *"JAWS 3-D".* Especially with the climatic finale with Mama Jaws breaking the glass (done with a different shark model) and water crashing into the camera. Parts of the original version can be seen in a short HBO BTS documentary and a VHS tape of the FX crew working in the film.
When I saw this as a kid two things stuck with me, 1 Jaws growls, and 2 Sea World in Orlando is land locked. There is no access to the ocean LOL. BUT as a kid just getting into his love of sharks I enjoyed the movie
Shark still looks fake. But he means business for real, this time
I was 8 when the movie came out, the exact perfect age to watch this. Young enough to think everything about it was cool, yet not old enough to understand all of the , uh hum, "issues" with the story and special effects.
We often hear about JAWS being remade. That’s an awful idea. If I had the cash, I would back a remake of this film. It’s a hot mess but the idea is a great one! A remake of JAWS 3-D by someone who knew what they were doing would be a lot of fun.
The one thing I’ve noticed the most about this particular jaws movie other than the cheap 3-D and stuff, is the fact that most of the time the shark stays underwater, and only breaches the surface ones in that scene where is attacks Kelly. It’s also the biggest of the sharks in the Jaws films.
I LOVE this film always been a favorite! Love the cast, music and everything about it. Let’s face it, the 80s were cheesy, corny gold and it definitely shows here - and also in Amityville 3D: The Demon as a matter of fact.. both of which were released in 1983. Love the trilogy.. that is all - and that goes for both. 👌💖
I actually saw this at the theater with my Dad . The theater is gone this might have been the last movie I saw there and my dad is on life support so even if it's bad I do have a memory with this movie
I’m one of the oddballs who really enjoys Jaws 2 and Jaws 3-D (in my mind, Jaws: The Revenge is poor fan fiction). But even I wish that the execution was a bit tighter on Jaws 3. It feels like a movie directed by an art director. It’s all a bit twee, but still a delight to watch.
Man, you nailed it. For some reason i remember this movie so much more vividly than so many other movies that i watched as a kid, and every scene that you pointed out is still seared into my memory as a fun/borderline-traumatic childhood experience lol.
I also went back and rewatched this one some recent summer, and yeah it's not a great movie lol, but it was a surprisingly fun way to reconnect to those memories.
3 was always my favorite of the series
Aww i also took my 8 year old to watch the rerelease and he LOVED IT.
I told him no at first and said it will make you scared of water. He goes not if i can see through the water and if i cant im scared anyways. I was like .....fair point kid lets get our tickets!
The effects are the thing that holds it back from actual being pretty good ngl
the effects aren't even that bad...the people who constantly cry about the bad effects can only ever point to the shark swimming at the window scene, which has been said 1000 times by the people who worked in it that there were problems with the animatronic and they were running out of time....
The worst thing that the movie does is how it lingers on shots for way too long. The arm looks fine, but they stay on the shot forever...The same thing with the fish head at the beginning, they linger on it forever.....None of those shots that had things coming at the camera were wanted by the director, they were studio mandates from Universal, Alves didn't want to treat it as a gimmick he actually wanted to make a movie
95% of the people who cry about the movie the most have never seen it in 3D and only ever seen it on television....I saw it in theaters one of the good theaters that actually had the polarized glasses and its a hell of alot more entertaining actually watching it in 3D.....Its still entertaining to watch with either a 3D tv or a PSVR headset, since the 3D version is on the blu-ray
To be fair, the cast isn't very good either. Not a single one of the characters are memorable at all. Not one. They got the "story" part OK in this movie. I can live with the SeaWorld thing. It's the characters and especially the cheap effects that make it laughable. I still think it's easily better than the 4th movie.
Dennis Quaid’s masterpiece
Poor Jaws 3-D, I'm a true Jaws maniac, I was there opening night, and albeit we all knew this should have been the death of this story, we were having fun with the 3-D, The floating arm, The flying jawbone thru the screen..Yes, its not great by any means, but I suggest this falls under the "There's something about Mary" factor. Best enjoyed with a bunch of people in a theatre setting as opposed to watching it home alone...preferably inebriated.. Viewing only the 3D version..You'll have fun. IMO, there was one small shudder I got from watching it. When seeing the flashlight under the water just suddenly go black, that was a good touch. There just wasn't enough of them. In closing, The true victim of this movie is poor Joe. Alves the production designer from the previous two...He's the reason the Orca looked so good and using a beach with a large area of a sandy bottom going only 30 ft down to shoot the second half of Jaws....He gets a deck stacked against him with his first directorial gig....and was totally chewed up and discarded by Hollywood in such a savage way that would make Chrissie blush...lol...That's just not right.....Maybe Universal should have listened to Zanuck/Brown and did "National Lampoon's Jaws 3 Humans 0".... After the success of Airplane, the market was ripe....In the end though, we can guess all we want, but the truth is that's not something you can accurately predict. No matter who you are.
In +\- 25 years, even the worst, most hated movies will become beloved misunderstood gems or some such nonsense. Such is the power of the Member Berries
I remember seeing this in the theater. I would go with my mom to her bowling league night and walk across the street to the theater. Even at 12 I thought it was cheesy. But hey, I got to see a movie, eat popcorn with way to much salt and butter flavored shortening, and a soda. I will sit through 3D before Revenge any day of the week.
last month i saw 35mm prints of Jaws, FRIDAY THE 13TH and Amityville 3D in traditional 3D at the Colonial theater home of the blob
ok that shark slow-mo-ing into the glass is cracking me up big time lmao
I have the Jaws 3D blu-ray, and still have my LG C6, which means I can still watch this masterpiece in 3D.
Also, if Universal wants to bring back the Jaws franchise, a Jaws 3 remake would be a good start, especially since no one would be outraged.
You don't even need to have a 3D tv to watch it in 3D.....I have the PSVR and you can watch 3D blu-rays using the headset, so I can actually watch Jaws 3D and Friday the 13th 3D in 3D......Alot of people seem to forget or not know that the PSVR can play 3D movies.
I saw the original Jaws in theaters 3D this past summer. Dope af!
I remember watching this at my Grandma's house on a Saturday afternoon when I was a little kid. Loved it then, and still do now.
I'm gonna start adding "shark goes boom" into more conversations.
I remember going to the theatre with my dad, and I wanted to see Return of the Jedi for the like the 4th or 5th time. My dad was clearly sick of Ewoks, so he insisted we see this. I was upset at first, but had a good time because of the 3-D. Before this movie, I had only see the red/blue anaglyph kind of 3D. But this was polarized 3D, so no red/blue. It was very clear and much improved in comparison. It looked really awesome for its day in that theatre that Sunday afternoon in 1983. f I had never seen it this way, I know I would not have the fond memories I do.
I have never figured out why we needed a bunch of sequels to Jaws in the first place. The movies got worse and worse as the sequels kept coming. [And no, I don't understand why we had to get The Meg either.]
Gene Siskel said it straight in the guys' review of Jaws The Revenge: What happened to the shark in the first movie? Dead. What happened to the shark in the second movie? Dead. And the third? Blown to kingdom come. Same old, same old. And, despite what we are told in Jaws 4, sharks don't exactly have the intelligence - or the capacity - to seek revenge for three dead sharks, let alone follow the Brodys around the world FOR that revenge.
I've just hit play but I feel like this will be even better if I take a shot every time the clip of Jaws coming at the screen plays. LOL
Godspeed!
The effects ruin this movie, however I still love the idea of this man made lagoon accidentally housing a great white, and when they discovered the shark they try to make money off of it. This movie has some Jurassic Park or King Kong vibes with the exploitation of a dangerous creature that we know little to nothing about. It always reminds me of the several real life attempts to care for a great white in an aquarium, which obviously resulted in disaster. They even include a similar experience in this movie with the juvenile shark's complications being in the aquarium.
The 70’s, 80’s and 90’s all had a defining (for better or worse) “horror loose in a resort” film.
In 1973 we had Westworld, in 1983 we had Jaws 3D, and in 1993 we had Jurassic Park. It’s a neat coincidence.
As a child Jaws 3 was my favourite as it was the only one of the three (at the time) that didn't scare me!
Obviously I now recognise the original as the masterpiece it is. Still have a soft spot for 3, maybe it was because of Lea Thompson....
While no 80's image is as iconic as Princess Leia in the gold bikini, Lea Thompson in a blue bikini is right up there.
@@palaceofwisdom9448 Almost as good as her kissing a Duck in her smalls! LOL
This movie could've been so much better if they didn't try to use 3D
It's better than 4. And Leah Thompson is looking choice
this movie comfortably sits at my top 10
why?
*window scene, also part of the submarine dissapears*
10:10 very valid, sir. I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Next Generation with a buncha friends after smoking (we're recreational out here) and now we quote Wilmer on a regular basis. "Allllllllllllriiiiiiiiiiiight raaaaacing faaaannnnnnnnnnnnnssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.. start your enginnnnesss"
“Shark still looks fake.” - MJF 😂
I like this movie. And I like the fourth Jaws too. They’re not perfect masterpieces but I find them to be fun
If nothing else, Jaws 4 heavily inspired the underrated NES game, so I'm grateful for it.
This is one of the so-bad-it's-good movies...I'd love to see it reworked with today's 3D technology...don't remake it, just update the 3D...I'd love that...this movie is comedy gold!
The real 3-D effects (as seen on the Blu-Ray) are the best I've ever seen! I am not kidding! The depth perception is outstanding. The overall sharpness and the model work of the movie is not that good, but the 3-D is the highlight!
The cameras used to film Jaws 3D are the same cameras that were used to film Friday the 13th 3D.
Studio would have been way better going with National Lampoon's Jaws - 3, People - 0.
Also Matheson wrote The Incredible Shrinking Man. That film deserves a review.
I used to watch this one all the time. I liked that it was filmed at nearby Sea World and the whole underwater tunnels thing was so cool to me. The effects are pretty bad, but I didn't care. It did have some pretty tense moments and I loved the dolphins!
Fond memories for this one. It was the 1st movie I ever saw Dennis Quaid in. This one came with 3D glasses at the entrance I think. The best actor in this is the boss of SeaWorld, just love his ultra capitalist take on this. Camp, cheesy beyond words but I thought it was God's gift back in '82..or was it '83 ?
MacCorkindale is involved. That makes it good. LGJ's participation makes it great.
I caught the last hour on tv a couple of weeks ago. I remember thinkin that it wasn't all that bad. And then the shark reversed. Twice.
I always enjoyed Jaws 3. Lea Thompson in a bikini was a treat! Dennis Quaid and Bess Armstrong were also strong. And I always liked Lou Gossett Jr. My only complaint is the final scene where the shark breaks thru the glass. It is the single worst special effect ever put on film. Embarassing.
It may be a terrible film, but it is one of my guilty pleasures in this life. I have such a great time watching Jaws three but I’ve actually never seen it in 3-D since I saw it in the theater. I would love to see it in 3-D again.
Stephen King on Maximum Overdrive has become the gold standard for coked up! Lol lets not forget Gary Busey's cokeness in Silver Bullet! LMAO
Yeah it looks cheesy AF but I saw this in the cinema wayyy back when I was 14 and I loved it, we thought the 3-D was great at the time hahah.
Also I saw the first one back in the summer of 76 (In the UK, films came out later than the US back then). It's still my second favourite film ever.
Loved the little story about you and your son, not the movie though! 💙 Thanx for the vid!
I still have no idea what that hand push game is that Jeff Bridges and Leah Thomson are playing. I've never heard of it before or since this movie.
Shark looks sick 💥
I like the idea of this movie more than the final product, still it's a bit of a guilty pleasure to watch.
I loved this as a kid. I even had the 3-d trading cards! They were super cool! I was a weird kid.
I happened to see Robocop 3 for the first time yesterday. That seemingly deliberate abomination would be perfect for one of these.
Love Robocop never could make myself watch part 3.
It's awful, no Peter Weller and a PG13 flying RoboCop
When I was a little kid, I loved this movie. Back then the effects weren't that bad. Yeah but now they are terrible.🤣🤣
I had to defend Jar-Jar Binks once at Comic-Con so I understand
I absolutely appreciate what each one of you strive to defend in these films at Jo Blo.
My name's Ryan and I'm a Pet Sematary 1-2 fan, Screamers, Jaws 1-3, Alien 3, And many a film mentioned on the journey into darkness trilogy just to name a few. I'm a shitty filmaholic as well.
this was one of my top B movie watches as a kid
The guy getting eaten scene, when he is inside Jaws mouth completely, sticks to me this day 35 years later. As bad as the movie is
Same here. That scene is real Horror.
And then the later scene, when his friend realizes he didn't make it... it gets me every time.
Lea Thompson in a bikini is worth the watch in itself!
Has there ever been a time in movie history where studio interference didn't spell trouble? Not that I can recall.
This movie is too bad.
Maybe if it was called "Shark Attack at Sea World in 3-D!" or something.
Really like the part at the end when the guy's in the shark's mouth holding the hand grenade and they pull the pin and the shark blows up!
That's some great bad movie craziness!
Saw it in the cinema when I was 4.
Loved it back then just as I loved all the jaws films. Well except revenge but I probably would have if it had come out sooner. This was definitely the worst of the first 3 but I always loved the idea of it being set in a sea world.
I saw this in the theater at release. The movie was really bad. It has a following like a lot of so bad they're good films. The 3d did actually pop off the screen. The problem was the fake looking body parts and shark. The compositing was unbelievably bad. Even for the time. It used the 3d tech that Friday the 13th part 3 and Amityville 3d used. Which was fairly new at that point. More or less the same as today's "Real3d", at least in how it works. The best 3d I ever saw in a horror was the remake of Valentine's Day.
I knew this movie was bad when I was like 7 and it was on TV and I was watching it and decided I'd rather do the actual dishes. Real story.
Deep Blue Sea did everything this film was trying to do but did it far better.
A great white swimming backwards. Hmmm
Deep Blue Sea they swam backwards and tread water lol
Plotwise, there's a massive built-in flaw to doing a Jaws series - why on Earth would the same people keep getting back in the water after so many near misses? Michael Brody must have a deathwish.
I loved this movie as a kid and still do to this day
As a sea world kid, I loved this movie
I dimly remember seeing this in the cinema as a child. I never remembered much of it, but I always thought the underwater tunnels were pretty cool.
Lol I recently bought that same sequel set! I was disappointed that it didn't have all 4.
It seems incredulous that Sea World would participate, but it must be remembered that, at the time this film was made, Sea World was owned by Harcourt, Brace & Javonovich, the school textbook publisher.
It's a terrible film, of course. And the 3D tech reduces the film to basically 16mm resolution. But I admit that the concept could have worked under better writing. Bringing the Brody sons in sounds more like studio meddling than creativity.
I was 8 when the first Jaws came out, and I was lucky that my dad owned a movie theatre where I practically lived. Even as a kid, I enjoyed audience reactions and sharing in them. And the original Jaws was a great example of that. Beyond giggling at the cheap 3D tricks, the audience reaction to this film was totally muted. They did not care. And I was embarrassed for us to be playing it.
And this time is truly is "A" shark not "THE" shark which Brody blew to kingdom-come with a pot-shot at the air tank. "Good shot kid...that was one in a million!" (oops...wrong franchise...but strangely approriate..)
Part 3 & 4 seem to get a lot of criticism, but I've watched them a million times over the years. They're just too fun not to enjoy.
4 is just dog shit.....There is absolutely nothing good or watchable about Jaws The Revenge.....Jaws 3D on the other hand is highly watchable and highly entertaining especially if you have either a 3D tv or a PSVR headset. Jaws 3D isn't anywhere close to awful if your actually watching it in 3D
@@lutherheggs451 Wasn't the movie finally released in 3-D on Blu-Ray several years back?
I’m not going to lie and say Jaws 3 has gotten better with time. But, I will lie and say it hasn’t gotten any worse.
I wish that you had mentioned, that EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Kate kisses someone she makes a “MUAH” Sound. It is beyond hilarious.
Yes!!!
Oh absolutely lol. Love this movie
Jaws 3-D & Maximum Overdrive show how bad a movie can be but yet how great a bad movie can become while on cocaine. Jaws 3-D is vastly superior than 99% of most movies nowadays as is the case of most 80s movies.
It's sooooo bad it's good. Still better than part 4 though. That needs to be redone
10:26 I wonder if it was the idea of Seaworld to agree to have it's park promoted in a shark movie?
This is the one with Dennis Quaid screaming around sea world right?
Subscribing to this channel is that regret. The guy who ACTUALLY knows what he's talking about is RARELY on here.
I don’t hate the movie, I just know it’s not very good.
As a big early Lea Thompson fan I’m happy to watch it.
I like the basic concept of an animal attacking people in a park.
It’s something that may have been better for a film outside the jaws franchise.
Yes. Yes, it has. But that's mainly because of the Jack Daniels.
7:13 off-brand Billy Dee Williams
