The Blob Vs The Thing | Face Off

  • As much as people complain today about Hollywood remaking their favorite movies, back in the ‘80s, it was all the rage! And it actually improved some old movies with cool concepts. In 1982, director John Carpenter took a famous Howard Hawks creature feature and transformed it into a paranoia-inducing, psychological monster movie with some of the best special effects that hold up to this very day with The Thing starring Kurt Russell. The titular Thing is able to duplicate any living organism to give itself the best chance of taking everything over. Every single cell of this being is dangerous. It could be any one of us. Yes, even you!
In 1988, Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont reintroduced us to the ultimate eating machine. No, not Jaws! He brought back the gelatinous force of The Blob. It doesn't matter how strong you are, how tough you are, or how great your mullet is, if you get the Blob on you… you're dead. This itty bitty snotball can very quickly turn into a giant bouncy house of death. If these two species were to meet up, who would walk away the victor? This might be a case of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, but let's find out! It’s a Monster Mash here on… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Bryan Wolford, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Ric Solomon. But don’t let us have the final word - tell us in the comments which monster movie is your choice - The Blob or The Thing?

I love both of these movies, and I do believe The Thing is a better film than The Blob. Having said that, if these two creatures were to face each other, the blob would win. If fire destroys the thing, then it's reasonable to assume that acid would have the same effect, and that's essentially what the blob is made of. If both of these creatures are fighting in the first place, then it's safe to assume that it's in an environment where both are active (i.e. not the arctic or any other frigid region). As far as weaknesses go, fire can destroy the thing, but the cold doesn't destroy the blob, it merely pauses it. As far as anyone knows, nothing destroys the blob.
Like I said, I love both of these movies, but not a single point to The Blob? Come on...

As far as a one on one rumble, The Blob wins easily as it is able to consume any organic material. However, if The Thing is capable of replicating The Blob's cells, that is definitely a different story. The Thing would also be able to figure out The Blob's weakness just like any intelligent being would, so if the "arena" is not enclosed and The Thing has tools to it's advantage, it would stand as good of a chance of stopping The Blob as the human beings in the movie did. Lots to think about and consider. Cool video and great topic!

I'd give most of those categories to the Blob, myself. Specifically, I'd argue that a weakness to fire is a much bigger liability than a weakeness to cold. The Blob is more averse to cold than the Thing, but they're equally weak to it in the sense that you can stop them if you freeze them solid. However, it's WAY easier (and more common) to weaponize fire than cold.

The entire time I watched this video, I tried to figure out which one I would choose if I absolutely had to pick a favorite out of the two and I just can't bring myself to do it. They're vastly different films. And they're both terrifying. I guess you could say the thing is a bit more terrifying because the nature of the creature is a bit more complex. You know when The blob is coming for you. You don't know when it's the thing. But both of these are absolutely amazing. I've got a bit more nostalgia with The blob as I grew up watching it a lot on TV and VHS as a kid. I never really got into the thing until I was in my teens. John Carpenter is my favorite director. And while both of these movies are remakes, the blob is my favorite remake next to evil Dead 2013. So, you could probably say these three films are my top three favorite remakes of all time. Anyway, I could go back and forth for hours about what I like about each film. This video has given me a great idea though. I think I just might double feature the two of these. Now that's a recipe for a good night! It's done all the time with the asylum and straight to video companies like that, but I would really love to see a big budget creature feature versus film. It wouldn't necessarily have to be the blob versus the thing, as I really don't see how that would work very well even as exciting as it sounds, but I sure would love to see a big budget film pitting two monsters like these against each other.

If it’s a 1v1, The Blob would win as it’s unlikely The Thing could assimilate The Blob with out being completely dissolved, destroying it at a cellular level. But if they were both dropped on earth then then The Thing would win as it could use the humans and their technology to defeat The Blob.

In an actual fight between the two I think the Blob would be the winner. The Thing needs living organic cells to consume, assimilate and mimic while the Blob just consumes all organic matter. In the event The Thing tried to assimilate the Blob, it may have a very hard time. Even if the Thing managed to defeat the Blob I see one interesting side effect possibly happening, the Thing forgets everything it ever learned or copied and gets stuck in the Blob form forever.

The Thing is one of the best movies ever made. The Blob is an excellent remake. Both are awesome.

Both are solid great remakes that outshine the originals. But my question is, who would win in a fight, The Blob or the Thing? Would the Thing be able to assimilate the Blob or would the Blob just dissolve the Thing’s cells. My money is on the Blob.

I love both of these movies, I think I love the thing a little more, but if these two were to fight, I feel like the blob would win just because I don’t see how the thing would be able to touch it or even fight it without getting absorbed or ate

Lol if darkcloud says it, it must be true. Hey bud the things whole game is if it touches another living organism, it can become it. They’d be one in the same either way. The thing can change gameplays based on what it’s fighting and earth is just one of its many conquests. It took out much more difficult and intelligent beings that could travel space so I think a fuckin dumb slime goop would be a walk in the park. Also it could just avoid it or freeze it and keep moving.

i doubt the thing could assimilate the blob, it would dissolve it before it could take over. i also don't see how freezing something is easier to do than setting it on fire, fire is everywhere and pretty darn easy to make.

If it came down to both creatures trying to absorb one another, I wonder which one would prove to be more dominant. My money is on the Blob because that thing just devours in order to add to its own mass, but maybe the Thing's doppelganger cells are so powerful that they would just devour the killer jello mold and then duplicate it.

If the thing won than it's all over. A creature without weakness, silent as predator, deadly as Xenomorph. No weakness to fire, ice water, earth the four elements. We only have bacteria from War of the worlds to win or else we are doomee.

    • @shawnoconnor8075
      @shawnoconnor8075 Před 9 měsíci

They’d just become one in the same, the thing wouldn’t have to do it’s whole transform to defend itself tactic because it has no more threats so it would just maintain blob form while it took over any species in front of it

The Blob is supposedly impervious to fire, but the fact is it's just a blob of organic stuff, so intense sustained heat will kill it just as it will kill any other organic life form. In the 1988 movie they use a flame thrower briefly, but they don't trap it and roast it in an oven. The cold simply slows it down, and freezes it. Cold doesn't even seem to kill it. The right kind of radiation or chemical or biological weapon could probably kill it. The story never goes there, so we don't find out. Speaking of going there, the 1982 version of The Thing was much closer to the original short story "Who Goes There?" on which the whole franchise was based than the fifties version was. And yeah, the Thing definitely wins against the Blob.

overall, yes The Thing is the better movie, but both are classic and worth the watch. But, in a head to head battle, I do not see how The Thing will have the ability to compete with the Blob. Its still organic, and the Blob eats/absorbs everything organic! Winner... The Blob!

Ps I think a predator was what took out E.T. glowing finger does not work to well against shoulder cannons.
