It's a Blob VS. Blob showdown at "Cinemassacre Video 2" today. The Blob (1958) was a drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve (Steven McQueen) and his best girl, Jane (Aneta Corseaut), as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. 30 years later, in 1988, a remake was created. In that film, in a tiny California town, high school students discover a strange, gelatinous substance that melts the flesh of any living creatures in its path. So basically the same thing, just expanded. Get it? Expanded? Like THE BLOB???!

It’s kinda funny too, because I and many others were introduced to him through the persona of the Nerd, so while we associate his face with a rage-filled gamer in his game room, being cartoonishly angry at games and swearing profusely. Turns out in real life he’s just a really cool dude.
I wonder how he is when talking about animated classics, does he appear static?

I'm with James, why do so many Hollywood films seem to hate cats, to the point that they act like no one has them as beloved pets? Alien is like the only horror movie I can think of where not only does the cat survive, Ripely actually went out of her way to save him like the dad went back in the house of Amityville Horror to save the dog.
The 58's Blob is so smooth and terryfing, the monster and the movie itself. I love it.
The ending of the 80s blob is something that stuck in my mind for years. I'd honestly love to see a straight sequel with the jar with th blob getting broken open. Or let loose.
I hate to say this and not sound cliche. It has to be done with practical effects with little or subtle CGI.
@@sydneystroud4397 It can be CGI too, both Practical and CGI Effects are fantastic! CGI is hard to make along with Practical, it takes a very long time and is hard work to make both. CGI is just another tool to help make films just like Practical Effects. It's time to stop the "hate" for CGI, if people really love film as much as they say they do, then they should love and appreciate CGI just as much as Practical.

I love both versions of The Blob for different reasons. I like the 50's version for its cheesy appeal, groovy theme song, and Steve McQueen's performance.
I love the 88 version for its awesome gory and creature effects, its subversion of expectations, and Shawne Smith's performance.

They really did a good job on remakes back in the 70s and 80s. The blob, the thing, little shop of horrors and that amazing invasion of the body snatchers all did a great job. These days a lot of the remakes don’t do it for me

Oh I meant the one with Donald Sutherland! The 90s one on a military base was alright. And the 00s one with Nicole Kidman was alright too.. not super, but had nice scenes.

80s blob is a perfect remake, just like the thing and the Fly. The 80s solved the horror film.
Agreed. Exactly what I thought. The 80's is where horror and practical effects really started to gain traction.
The original Fly is an entirely different beast, more of a difference between them and the blobs. I personally prefer the original.

The Blob ‘88 was filmed in my hometown of Abbeville, Louisiana. Funny enough is the actors went eat at my grandparents restaurant and they have some great stories about it. I can confirm that we do not have Blobfest here. I would definitely love to go.

I will always have a soft spot for the original 1958 Blob. As a kid in the 1970's, I would see The Blob on television and get so scared that I would turn off the TV. Took a few broadcasts for me to see the whole film. The fact that the Blob could slide under doors and through air vents was plenty scary.

I vote for the 1950s Blob as my favorite because my dad was in it 😂(and did the commentary for the criterion collection dvd back in the day).
I like it a lot more than the overrated remake. It has genuine affection for its characters but I really hate the mean streak in the remake.

I remember when I was 7 years old visiting relatives in Malaysia in 1990 (I live in the UK) waiting for a train in the seating area of a train station. I kid you not, they had the blob (1988) showing on the telly. This was in the middle of the day! I remember thinking: what the hell am I watching here! 😁

I met a woman who was a teacher in my middle school who said she was there when they came up with the idea for the blob. For shooting certain lighting effects the crew would shine a spotlight through gelatin. She was on a movie set one day and some of the gel spilled onto the ground and it moved across the floor in such a way that it slid over and moved around objects like papers and books and rejoined with itself on the other side. Effects artists and producers saw this and thought it would be cool if there was a formless monster that could move like that.
You can feel James sheer passion with this stuff.
When I saw this in the colonial theater, Joel Hodgeson was there. Rad times.

I've always been preferential to the classics but i can appreciate good remakes.

The stuff had a great premise but made to much mistakes. Its tonally a mess...
One review I'd be interested to see, and in the same vein of this one, would be a full comparison between the original Invaders From Mars and the '86 version since you mentioned it in passing. Great stuff as always, guys.

I thought the remake was better because it had more character development for the leads, it had a tongue-in-cheek attitude about itself, it was entertaining, and the special effects are fantastic.

When I was four or five years old I found the 1988 version my father freshly recorded off the satellite. The movie was so damn intense I had to take breaks watching it. Afterwards I never wanted to go near Phone Booths or Garbage Disposals.

I saw The Blob just recently and was pleasantly surprised at the amazing practical effects, its like The Thing but even better. You will never see a movie with effects like this ever again

He (Tony) seemed rude and a bit brusk, but he had no context for how to fit that game into the imagery the middle guy (Justin) was trying to share with him, so he dismissed it. It was pretty uncool, but people do that type of stuff sometimes.

I saw the 1980s “The Blob” when I was a kid and it scared the ever living shit out of me!
I grew up only having seen the 1958 original when I was a kid in the 80s...But I'll never forget walking into my local Mom and Pop video store (Front Row Video) in 1988 and seeing the insanely creepy standee for The Blob remake, which was a full-size cardboard cut-out of a guy reaching out and screaming through the mass of slime. I didn't see the movie itself until watching AMC around Halloween in '02 and they were showing it as part of their horror marathons. I just watched it again tonight and it holds up pretty damn well.
I miss the old set, it looked a lot better :(

Both films are classics and each have made an immense amount of impact on the science fiction and horror genres. If nothing else, you must at least admit the historical value of the 1951 Thing. It did so much to jumpstart the sci-fi genre in film.
I gotta go with the 1958 original, maybe it's because I grew up in Chester County and thought it was the coolest thing ever that such a legendary movie was shot so close by

Stranger Things season 3 was clearly inspired by The Blob, with it's blob-like central villain. There's even a scene where the creature is in its blob form and squeezes through some vents.

I personally prefer the 80s version. I just remember I was like 10 or 11, went into the local video rental store, recognizing the title and rented The Blob (I didn't see the original until about a year later). At the time it was the bloodiest movie I had ever seen. Still love it, also Kevin Dillon is fantastic. Love, Love, Love the remake!!

when I was like 9 I saw the 88 version of The Blob with my granny in Mexico it was in English with Spanish subtitles I love this movie for so many reasons beside it being one of my favorite top 10 movies
