What's the best Indiana Jones movie? Raiders of the Lost Ark or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. They're basically the same film beat for beat, one's just more shiny and the other more classic. Tough decision, but the goons at Cinemassacre Video are here to answer it in this Rental Review!

I always saw the 'let it go' scene in Crusade as symbolic of Indy and his father's relationship. Indy was trying to garner his father's respect by retrieving the the object of his life-long obsession. His father telling him to let it go showed that Indy was always more important to him, he just never showed him in traditional ways.

The reason Henry Jones Sr telling Indy to let the grail go is so important is because this is a man who spent his entire life obsessing over this cup, to the point that he never had time for his child or wife (though according to him, Indy's mom understood that so well that she didn't tell him she was sick). And yet he's the one saying that in the end, it's not worth it. What's important isn't that Indy is being told to let go, it's the context behind it.

Also I feel that the "let it go " scene was lost on mike , the whole movie Indies dad was obsessed with finding the grail, to the point he had neglected indie .
This was adressed in the blimp scene ,when indie pointed this out at which point Indies dad called him out and said well I'm here?
What do you want to talk about then?
Indies dad also scallded him and dismissed him threw out the movie , is this what you call archeology?
Also senior called him junior threw out the movie ,belittling him...."his name is junior" dad!! " well that's his name Henry Jones junior we named the dog Indian " I have fond memories of that dog.
When the blond falls to her death after she was obsessed with the grail and indie dives to grab it.
    Indies dad yells junior!
But when Indies dad grabs his sons hand he see indie is trying to reach for the grail wanting to grab it " I can grab it" Indies dad says "Indiana let it go ".
Of all people that would know about being obsessed about getting the grail Indies dad would know ,regardless Indies dad doesn't want to lose his son over the grail even though most of his life he has been looking for it .
So Indies dad says "Indiana let it go" he didn't say "junior" he said Indiana...because he knew his son liked to be called that to get his attention and the he said let it go .
As in ,it's not worth losing you over .

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 Před 5 lety +21

@@reeses58 exactly. That's the point of that scene. That he finally let's go of his lifelong quest that's caused him to ignore his family, he knows its time to let go. He doesn't need this, he's been proved correct and that's enough. His quest is over.
Also Indiana Jones is an archeologist and a historian, and its a theme throughout the third movie that Indy wants to preserve these things for historic purposes. The opening scene of young indy has him repeating "this belongs in a museum". That scene sets up that Indy wants these things, not for himself or any other selfish reasons but for their historical preservation. He's reaching for the Grail to preserve it, so it exists for future generations. His father, on the other hand, has not only repeatedly warned about the power of the grail throughout the film, but he's also not a field archaeologist, he's an academic. So that scene isn't just father and son, it's field and theory, it's youth and experience meeting and so on.
For his father, having his theory work proved correct was enough. For Indy, theory is only part of it, the preservation of the object is his main objective. It's symbolic, being the last crusade, of Indy letting go of field work and moving into bookish academia as he ages (and aging/time is a big theme of the movie, tying into the eternal youth of the grail)
A lot is said in that scene, and I disagree with Mike that it makes him a weaker character.

This is a tough one. It's by far my favorite film franchise. Between Raiders and Last Crusade, It has to be a draw for me as well. Both are masterpieces in their own right. I do have one humble opinion on the ending of Crusade that people seem to be debating here. Indy’s reaching for the grail and can almost reach it. The temptation is overwhelming. It doesn’t make him weak; it makes him human. The film isn’t just about a treasure hunt. I’d argue that it’s primarily a father/son re-connection story and that moment (along with the look on Indy’s face during the hug after Henry thought he’d gone over the cliff) was the pinnacle. The grail. Their acrimony. They “Let it go” and it was a beautiful moment. The boy needed his father and his father finally came through.

I think Mike made the best arguments here. RAIDERS pretty much established everything about the franchise that made it iconic. When you just think of "Indiana Jones," everything you think of is right there in the first movie. None of the other films ever really added anything to the series; LAST CRUSADE added a little bit with the father dynamic, which was okay, but it really wasn't much.

The making "Indy a weaker character" when it comes to the grail is something i disagree with.
We have to remember the beginning of Crusade with Young Indy.Even as a kid his ethos of " IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!" is strong and clearly something Henry had drilled into him.
The ending Juxtaposes their roles, with Henry, who had spent his entire life chasing it being the one to give it up,influenced in part by his son and with Indy essentially becoming his father who obsessed with it but not for the selfish reason of the blonde chick but for the noble reason of wanting to see it in a museum as his father did and in the end both deciding that family is whats more important.
There is a great bit of character play in that scene and feels like it went full circle.

They're thematically linked, with the biblical plot device and the Nazi's as antagonists. Temple Of Doom is more of a stand-alone adventure. Understandable, since the series started out as an hommage to adventure serials, but on the long run it's just a lesser accomplished episode within the whole series. Still, the bad/inferior rep it gets is undeserved. It just wasn't as good as Raiders and Crusade.
