DUEL (1971) It's Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," but with a Truck - Rental Reviews

  • Duel was one of Steven Spielberg's earliest films. It came out in 1971 and is definitely a precursor to Jaws. The chase scenes anyway. It's basically Jaws, if it was about a truck instead of a shark. David Mann (Dennis Weaver), a mild mannered electronics salesman, is driving cross-country on a two-lane highway when he encounters an old oil tanker driven by an unseen driver who seems to enjoy annoying him with dangerous antics on the road. Unable to escape the demonic big rig, David finds himself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the monstrous truck. When the pursuit escalates to deadly levels, David must summon his inner warrior and turn the tables on his tormentor.

    What I really enjoy about this film is careful vehicle choices and visuals of them. Spielberg specifically chose the truck model due to a more isolated cab to look more animal-like and like wise when the crew was choosing a car they carefully chose what would be considered the most "mild mannered" of automobiles, the Plymouth Valiant. Spielberg demanded it to be red and it kind of hammers home this Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad wolf or Jason with his red cape against the Kholkikos .

They wound up trading them in around the 1990s. At least the Plymouths my parents owned at the time were easy to repair, unlike most modern-day vehicles.

    Spielberg's tradition is actually that he goes on vacation whenever his film premieres, so he doesn't have to look at reviews. The story he doesn't film on the last day was actually that he directed the final shot of JAWS from a motorboat and when picture wrapped, he speed away because he was sure the crew was going to try and drown him from all the stresses and overscheduling that had gone on.

    Duel is one of the all-time great films, regardless of genre. As a kid in the late 1970s and early 1980s, my mom and I used to watch it every year when it would be shown on TV on (I think) the Labor Day weekend. It must have been the extended version on TV by then because I bought the DVD the month it came out in the 2000s and I remembered every scene.

    • @cornbredx
      @cornbredx Před 4 lety +1

      The Terminator was actually much more influenced by Westworld- almost ripping scenes directly from it.
      Maybe Duel was influential in some small way, but I find that slightly unlikely since Duel was a TV movie and it's actually a mostly forgotten film by all but the most film savvy. That's not to undermine it's achievements, but it was not as lauded in the 70s and 80s, or even 90s. People just didn't really talk much about TV movies- and mostly still don't. If it was influential at all I don't think it would have been consciously so.
      Edit: Although I can see how you'd think that with the truck scene in T2. So, I suppose anything is possible.

      Yes... it's weird when you think about it actually; they both have a very similar premise of a mysterious stranger stalking somebody and terrorizing them for seemingly no real reason, but whereas Duel keeps the stranger's identity and appearance a secret, The Hitcher has him casually go straight up to his victim and speak with him multiple times throughout while being very prominently on-screen.
      Still has an air of mystery and horror, but done by very different means... they must have obviously been inspired by Duel but I wonder if they purposefully decided to make a film based on flipping that core aspect of Duel around and seeing if it would still work?

    Happy to see the Nerd and Friends doing this movie. I saw it as a kid in the 80s and it really stuck with me over the years. The premise is pretty simple and the way Spielberg creates suspense throughout the film is great. Another thing I love is how he never shows the driver which almost makes you think the truck is alive (something he did throughout most of JAWS). The diner scene is fantastic and the film shows what can be done on a small budget and with heavy time constraints.

It definitely holds up as an early masterpiece from Spielberg. I've just not spent enough time re-watching it countless times like I have Jaws, Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, and Raiders. That needs to change. Rental Reviews...you've inspired me to watch it again after 15 years.

    Great video - I LOVE Duel. I'm a little older than you guys (b. 1965), so I can confirm that it was normal for trucks to have multiple license plates from different states back then.
    There's a great video here on CZcams where the owner of the last existing Duel truck actually lets the youtuber drive it around in a big field, teaches him the basics of shifting, etc.
    Totally agree about older chase movies feeling more real and having more soul. I just recently saw the chase from "The Seven-Ups" with Roy Scheider and it's incredibly gritty and organic, watching the two cars plow through the city streets and then getting out onto the highway; the way they interact with other drivers (the bus driver who warns Scheider, then the truck driver at the end) - they're not just pinging around like it's a video game.
