Norman Bates was ripe for another sequel following the release of Psycho in 1960, but it wasn't until 1983 that Richard Franklin delivered Psycho II, a sequel 23 years in the making. So, let's flip on that No Vacancy sign as we check back into the Bates Motel with Psycho II. Psycho III was released three years after the surprise success of Psycho II, with Anthony Perkins making his directorial debut in hopes of achieving another hit. Unfortunately, it bombed, derailing Perkins' plans for further entries and becoming the lowest-grossing theatrical film of the Psycho series. However, it's not nearly as bad as its reputation suggests. In fact, besides being inevitably compared to the legendary original film, Psycho III is an amazing and underrated sequel.

Psycho 2 is a rare case of a unnecessary sequel to a masterpiece that far exceeded expectations and is a worthy follow-up
I was blown away when I first saw it at 16 (prob around 2001) even though I grew up with psycho references in movies and TV I didn't even know the sequels existed.. And then it turned out not only to be good but to be a great companion to the first movie... And then the next two sequels where also at least decent.. I was amazed that the movie I didn't think have sequels turn out to have some of the best in the horror genre
@@mullaoslo by every measure just proposing a sequel should have been laughed at. a well written sequel with the acting to match. Perkins gave you a character that we shouldn’t find sympathy with but made the audience not just feel for but root for st the end. I was skeptical going into 3 but Perkins once again added a dynamic most other actors couldn’t which made 3, while not as good, still enjoyable.
Psycho 2 is genuinely great in its own right
@@PCat2385 i was even enough of a horror virgin when I saw t
It that the fact that normal doesn't kill anyone in the movie (except at the end) actually came off as orginal to me. All the characters killing each while Norman walks around thinking mother is back was hillarous
@@richmlvcable absolutely
I enjoyed Psycho 2 quite a bit, it wasn’t as good as the first one but it was shockingly better than I expected.
I remember there being a trailer that was just a figure with his back to the camera. An old woman's voice said "Norman, is that you?" and he turned around and said "Yes, mother. It's me"
It was a chilling, effective trailer that got me so excited to see the movie... but I cannot find it online.
First off, YOU MET ANTHONY PERKINS??? DUDE!!! THAT IS AWESOME!!!! ❤
Now that I got that out of the way, I loved all of the Psycho sequels from 2 to 4. I bought the 3 sequels in a DVD set, and I had a marathon watch. I loved the psychological journey in each of the movies, and Perkins was not only good in each of them as Norman, but he was a great director for Psycho III. You could tell that he deeply understood the duality of the character, how in spite of his psychosis, there was a sense of good in him that was conflicted with all of it. Also, Henry Thomas made a great young Norman in Psycho IV. Seeing Elliot from E.T. in a psychological thriller with Olivia Hussey as his mother was a trip.
Psycho II is one of the best movie sequels of all time
Yes Psycho 2 is severely underrated.
Exactly, it has aged so well.
Don’t know how old you are…. But the Psycho Sequels were staples in 90s movie channel programming …..
Part 2 is definitely a underrated gem.
"Underrated". Another trendclown has learned the term....
@@johnaustin209 The words 'overrated', & 'underrated' & 'masterpiece' no longer have value for me 😂 people use them with whatever the f**k they want 😂😂😂😂😂
I love all of them, even part 4
I love 4, the kid from ET is soooooo creepy as 'mother'
It's the lesser film of the 3 sequels but is for me the only one that actually scared me, which is a rarity for me
4 was good until 'Bates Motel'.
@@deadseagull-xf3lk the Olsen twins join 90 Day Fiancee??
That was so cool you got to meet him.
Psycho 2 is one of the best sequels ever. This whole franchise is pretty consistent actually.
I love all the sequels. Jeff Fahey was awesome 🤘😍🤘
Part 2 was very good. I was pleasantly surprised. Anthony Perkins was a good actor.
Psycho 2 is a gem , and the musical score is about as creepy as hell , it is just a crying shame that the late Roger Ebert just could not see this !!!
My son and I experienced the tour train being chased by Norman at Universal last year. It was as memorable as the Super Mario World we went to visit.
That happened? wtf I was there and didn’t get that experience 😂
GLAD YOU ACKNOWLEDGED Norman Bates as a Slasher villain. Psycho IS a slasher after all .
I hadn't caught Psycho 2 or 3 since the theater until I saw some kind of retrospective on some CZcams channel several years back. I gave them another shot and was amazed at how good Psycho 2 was. The direction, Dean Cundy's cinematography, Tony Perkins acting. And part 3 was fun in a cheesy, sort of over the top way. I went out and bought the collection on blu and rewatch them at least every October. (not part 4)
Yeah, I never understood the $ hit the sequels got, as I personally enjoyed them all. 2, 3 & 4.
Meg Tilly....UUUUUHH-YEAHH!
I saw Psycho for the first time in the early 80's when it was broadcast on a Saturday afternoon on WPIX (Channel 11, home of the infamous SHOCKTOBER, where are my Shocktober homies at?)- I was only about 6, but my dad did that divorced dad thing where I was allowed to watch movies my mom wouldn't, albeit with his hand over my eyes (didn't work). At the end of every weekend, he would deliver me back to my mom, complaining that I never wanted to take a shower at his house (which really only had a shower)...and my mom would tell him that she didn't know why, because I loved taking baths, and she couldn't keep me out of the bathtub...huh...they just could never figure it out...
All 3 sequels are great for entirely different reasons. I saw all these flicks when I was around 14 (including the remake cuz it was released in theaters that year) and even though they varied in tone, I was fascinated with Norman Bates' history and descent into madness. 4 is an underrated gem, IMO. Olivia Hussey "kills it" as one of the worst mothers in movie history and you actually feel sorry for young Norman and almost understand why he ends up killing her (as well as what he plans to do to his wife in the present day).
The grandfather of horror? We've had horror films since the 20s
My family and me took a Vacation to LA in 86. We took the Universal studios tour. Huge billboards of movies coming out that weekend Legal Eagles and Psycho 3.
I've seen Psycho probably too many times to count, but when I saw part two sometime back in the 90's, I wasn't impressed. Then a couple of months back, I gave it another chance, still not as good as the first one, but as far as horror sequels go, it's up there with the best of them. The mystery of what's going on keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Part three and four, I've seen both of them and don't remember them fondly, and barely at all, but I'll certainly be giving them another chance in the very near future.
Mornin' JoBlo ✌️ thanks
Psycho (1960) Rulez✊🏻!
Psycho II (1983) Rulez✊🏻!
Psycho III 1986) Is Ok But It's Not For Me.
Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) Rulez✊🏻!
I'm really enjoying your channel 👍
I hadn’t watched the sequels, but wow. I really got to set up a night to watch them all
The word “digress” doesn’t mean what you think it means.
Can we just go back to the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and just stay in limbo? Best music and movies and tv shows.
I desperately want to see all five of the Psycho films to get remastered as a box set!
i had a crush on Meg Tilly as well...I saw one dark night because of her (well I own the dvd)
It took me a number of years to find out the mystery that it was the sweet old lady Ms. Spoole doing all the murders actually I read the summary on Wikipedia of all places. I think both movies are terrific and I always tend to watch them back to back as part 3 continues where part 2 left off in a way, this brings back memories as my family would go rent movies over the weekend for some unknown reason we picked Psycho 2 despite not having any knowledge that it was a sequel because I was born in 1976 and not having seen or heard what Psycho was.
"Ya looney!"
That Revenge of the Jedi shirt…. I want it!
Psycho 2 is so freaking good!! Watched it on a whim for the first time last year & couldn’t believe how good it was! 3 has its merits but the studio, of course, had to fuck it up bc they wanted Norman to be a killer again. Anthony Perkins is fantastic
I Saw Psycho 2 On Fawesome Horror Channel On Roku Last Halloween And I Loved It And I Have The Original Psycho On DVD And I Remember Seeing Psycho 4 On Sci-fi Channel When I Younger.
I’ve been saying this for years! The second one is a worthy follow-up to the first and, as a lover of hokey horror, the third and fourth are stellar. So enjoyable, so slept on! ❤❤
2 and 4 are amazing, interesting, and so overlooked. 3 is okay
Viva la Vera!! Still alive at 94!! 😊
2 was reasonably good. My aunt took me to see it in the theater.
Thanks. Call me weird, but like many, I actually didn't like the original, but LOVE psycho 2; there were many twists and creepy moments. ❤❤❤
Psycho 4 was a good one.
Shovel head scene in part 2 still makes me laugh. 😅
Psycho is my favourite film ever!
I remember watching the 4th movie when it came on Showtime. I really enjoyed it.
Psycho 2 rules this is an awesome video
So funny….. since the early 90s I’ve always LOVED these movies….. as a child in the 80s I saw the TV movie…. My brain “fused” the TV Movie Series Pilot with Part 2….. and I always said “where’s the chicken costume?”….it wasn’t until recently that I discovered there was a “tv pilot/tv movie”
Psycho II now on CZcams movies.
I saw the part 2 & 3 on TV in the 80s a good 10 years before I got round to watching the original . So I acknowledge the original is a landmark in cinema but personally I prefer the sequels.
I do highly recommend The Bates Motel series from a few years back. I got round to watching it earlier this year and was blown away at how good it was.
Psycho is a masterpiece but psycho 3 is my all time favorite and top 5 slashers of all time the score is amazing as fuck
I actually loved Psycho IV the first time I watched it I genuinely thought it was excellent the second time wasn't as good but It's still an overlooked sequel I also like Psycho III which in my opinion is better than IV.
Psycho II is an underrated sequel. They should have stopped with the ending of it and left it open as to whether Miss Spool was really Norman's mother or not. Never cared much for the rest of the movies after that.
Nothing like a great love story!
Which one was it where the actress that was Juliet in the 60's Romeo and Juliet and Bill's Wife in 1990 IT miniseries? I think it was 4. I saw it at about 8 or 9 and wow. It stayed with me a long long time. So wild.
Edit: haven't been able to find it/see it since
Psycho 4 The Beginning
Olivia Hussey. She was also in the amazing Black Christmas (the original-not the crappy remakes).

Goddammit, I hate When documenters dont DOCUMENT for accuracy: Psycho 2 came out in 1982 (the tagline even states its 22 years later). Also, how does anyone not know Ed Gein's last name is pronounced "Geen"?
I don't think movies existed yet, in the year 192.
@@user-ly9wr8wj5s ughhhh, 1982, lol. Thank you for raising my attention. Fixed it!
You met Anthony Perkins while working at the video store? Crazy…considering he died in 1992 and based off of your Instagram pics you were a child in the 90’s 🤔
Part III is better than II in my opinion. III is far similar in tone to the original Bloch novel. It has a sleazy, neon-lit vibe. Almost punk-noir. It's the first time we see Norman's double life from the perspective of a knowing audience, which makes it far darker and scarier. We see that Norman in 80's terms is nothing more than a full blown serial killer and a severely damaged pervert who should never have even been considered for parole. There's no mystique as to what he is and it's extremely disturbing. Perkins direction and handling of iconic imagery is brilliant. The man knew Norman Bates better than anyone. And, c'mon, Duke is a legend.
I was genuinely the second like there 🤣 never been so early
Controversial opinion, but III is better than II and almost as good as the first. Tony was King. He directed (imo) one of the best slasher films of the 80s off his ass on LSD and according to Jeff Fahey was in full smashing rooms rock star mode when he made it. Tony was a troubled man at that point. He caused such a ruckus making Psycho III that Lew Wasserman, the KING of Universal appeared on set with Sid Sheinberg and Tony told them to 'get back in your fking office I MADE this company' lol the chick who played 'Patsy' in Psycho III (the bathroom victim) said he was sexy as hell. Fascinating man. A true wild card.
Psycho 3 also rules I love the actress from Friday the 13th Part 7 and Slumber Party Massacre 2
I❤the psychos movies classics. Also I haven't forgotten lol...never will tru horror fans never 4get😎.
Psycho 2 was fucking awesome and it had the actress that played Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest
She’s the nun in part 3….. part 2 has Chucky’s Sister in Law…..
😎
@alejandromolinac yeah I just realized that too late thanks for the correction
No biggie…. For the longest time I had “blended” part 2 and that TV Pilot Turned TV Movie…. I’d watch part 2 and say……”Where’s the chicken outfit?”
😎
I only liked 2 and 4.
Part 3 has really great make up effects
Psycho II is king.
Psycho 2 was unnecessary but it was better than it had any right to be. Psycho 3 was okay. But again, it was not bad and hold up a solid standard. Psycho 4 gave us the story we didn’t need. But the whole set up worked surprisingly well. Bates Motel, the series because we don’t talk about the movie, was excellent.
Firstly, how in the hell is the Psycho franchise overly long? Or extremely long? Whatever you said in the video. There are four movies in total, not counting the shot for shot remake. How was that an extremely long series? Also, what about Psycho IV?
Psycho IV wasn't a theatrical release but made for the Showtime cable channel which is why it probably gets ignored in the franchise, sort of in the way Friday the 13th part 5 is.
Anyone instantly leave the video and jump to the police music video🧙♂️
Sean s Cunningham is NOT a master of horror. He hates jason, the hockey mask and that Fri 13th is his biggest film. He hasnt done a single decent movie.
Why is it so hard for you youtubers to pronounce Ed's last name correctly? He's only had like 5 movies made about him.
Psycho 2 is a very good and worthy sequel ...Now 3 was terrible and anything that follows. Best part of 3 is where Norman throws the ashtray at Duke and hitting him over the head after Duke tells him ..Watch the guitar🤣😂🤣😂
Yeah - the psycho sequels were actually not that bad. They werent just slapdash cash ins.
I bet you a million bucks that if they redo Psycho, Norman will be played by an LGBTQ woman of color.
Oh no! I am so sorry you feel threatened 😂
Psycho 3 is wack. 2 & 4 are good sequels/ prequel
Oh good lord. So now it's "hip" to champion the Psycho sequels??? These are dark times we've living in. Yes, Psycho 2 is OKAY. But it still can't hold a candle to the original. The rest? Unwatchable. Period.
