WHAT IS THIS?
The psychological drama television series 'Bates Motel' has been set as a prequel to Hitchcock's 1960 film 'Psycho'. However, during season 5 (the last one announced), it actually remakes the movie itself. It contains many scenes and even particular shots that recreate the ones used by Hitchcock. However, it is not a mere remake: the series give a similar but alternative story and ending to the plot.
In this audiovisual essay, I'm putting together all the scenes from season 5 of Bates Motel that have something to do with the plot of Psycho, and I'm also playing at the same time the scenes and shots from Psycho that they make reference to.

I'm here because I'm still obsessed with Bates Motel after it ended
me too!
@@Marina3m it was so sad :'(
To this day i am
The
It's a great show
Wow, I never noticed this the first time I saw the season but Rihanna's Marion says that she wants Janet's job. Janet Leigh is the actress who played the original Marion. Kinda clever, haha.
Good point! I didn't notice!
Hulavuta I got immediately cuz I'm in a 'psycho phase'
Nice man, Psycho is one of my top 10 films, I recently rewatched it this week too :D
And even more clever her boss doesn't give it to her! Kind of foreshadowing that she wasn't going to die in a way
Series is full of that kind of references. One I remember right now is when Norman is about to die, he says "I guess this is how it ends."
The way in which Freddie Highmore was chewing while tilting his head to look at the registry was almost mirrored to that of Anthony Perkins. He probably did, but I wonder if Freddie took a look at that scene prior to the take. Excellent actor!
For sure, was most definitely intended that way. I’m sure they gave him the reference footage.
Obviously he did
Freddie was incredible
Bates Motel never got the recognition it deserved.
Let's just have a moment of silence for how *incredible* Vera and Freddie were in this series! This is acting genius!
I laugh every time Rihanna whips open the shower curtain and says "Screw this shit" 😂
Great job on putting them side by side!
thank you!
The years was 1992, Freddie Highmore's birth and Anthony Perkins' death, They were the two Norman Bates. Freddie Highmore in Bates Motel and Anthony Perkin in Psycho.
For exactly 50 days, there were two
Fate works in funny ways. There are things that can never be explained or make sense.
Anthony Perkins was much better
Spooky
@@markodelic6017 how can he be so much better?altho it's a classic the acting back then was terrible and cheap..
For 5 seasons Freddy gave it all in his performance...compared to him Anthony looked like a schoolplay amateur
I liked the shower scene twist! glad he let Marion go,& killed the unlikeable Sam, instead.
Gloria Marie Ortner in the original Marion was killed off, because "Mother" was jealous....so, yeah...
good riddance. sam was an asshole!
no name and it made more sense, psychologically. He had multiple personality disorder which is an actual mental illness.
Gloria Marie Ortner "Screw this shit!" lol I wasn't expecting that
I agree
What actually impresses me is how Norman's vision of Norma talks in a same kind of tone and tempo the way Norman would. It's kind of creepy.
It's so sweet how as soon as he feels the "Mother" influence imminent, as Marion lays her head on his shoulder, he does all he can to get her safely away from him. He's aware by this time that that other personality is homicidal, and is so scared for this girl after all that happened to the other girls.
What was great about Freddie is he made the character his own. Anthony Perkins and Freddie Highmore did such terrific portrayals. Similarities of course but differences that each actor brought.
I love this, great job! what an excellent job, the young,Freddie Highmore did! Bates Motel was a totally addictive show, with excellent cast, writers,& directors. sharing.
thank you, I'm glad you liked my comparison!! Yes, it was an addictive show, I'm sad that it's over... Very good show and I love what they did with Psycho's story: similar but different
Gloria Marie Ortner I totally agree. Vera Farmiga did an amazing job too. They had wonderful chemistry as mother and son
I always flip the movies watching just minutes of them but when I saw this started watching this I couldn't stop. Freddy Highmore did an excellent job. I watched every episode on Netflix and the end when he kept thinking his mom was there I felt sad for him. He really brought his Character to life.
Gloria Marie Ortner agreed
I was worried about having a pop star play such an iconic role but Rihanna was decent. It's a modern take on the Marion character and I think she's more sympathetic than the original.
Bates Motel is infinitely better than the 1998 remake, it has its own merits while keeping the focus on psychosis.
I agree. Trying to do the same as Psycho would have been definitely inferior than the original. While Bates Motel decided to add something new, give a new perspective, update the story, which is a much better choice IMO
@Unseen but Well Heard I don't think so...Freddy Highmore's portrayal of this mentally ill guy is unbeatable!!It really makes you believe he's actually troubled...Not many actors can give you such a deep character...And I bet is hard AF to get it right on point...It's just the same in "The good doctor"...
You just believe he's actually an autistic boy
@Unseen but Well Heard why do you think that? is it because You're a more intellectual aware being?
Anything in the Psycho/Bates mythos (sequels included) is better than the 1998 remake.
SgCy That rubbish by Vince Vaughn? That was a pure insult. They might as well have casted Adam Sandler.
I never noticed that the cop who pulls Marion over is also the guy who says “previously on bates Motel”!!
He’s also the producer
Anyone else think Anthony Perkins looks quite a bit like the guy who plays sheriff Romero?
Thick eye brows... similar jaw. Just a thought.
The Romero dude actually mentioned that lol
I. Thought exactly the same thing.
Katie Wood he was on lost
Yes! Only Nestor is really hot!
Peter Cho yeah but Anthony Perkins died
What’s cool to me is in Charlie in the chocolate factory with Freddy there was a scen where they showed the stabbing scene from psycho, and maybe ten years later he’s staring in a show based on psycho. It’s like Tim burton predicted the future
yeah I hadn't realized that!
Yupppp I’ve always thought this
Both films were perfectly made, down to the tiniest detail. Psycho is a true masterpiece but Bates Motel is just a continuation of that and brings so much more thorough information of what both films share, Mental health.
Psycho was the introduction to mental health the world so desperately needed, but didn’t know it did. Especially since physiology was so undermined and was labeled as just one thing, crazy. When in reality mental health is a world of many faces. A lot of viewers found themselves making a connection with the film because its a film that spoke of the unspoken and finally gave mental health the attention it needed. But that was it, an introduction.
Notice how we weren’t introduced to Marion till the last season rather than the beginning, Like in Psycho? That’s because Bates motel walks us through the roots Psychology strongly holds by letting us get to know Norman & his mental state from beginning to end. It explains everything that led up to Normas mental state in the beginning of Psycho. In Bates motel it shows us all Norman endured, witnessing domestic violence & then being controlled by his mother. A long the way majority of the characters play a role that also shows the many faces of mental health some were even a factor to Norman state
Both are great pieces of work but I seriously feel like Bates motel should have come before Psycho i feel like it would’ve made more sense BUT thats just my opinion 😉
Mental health isn’t a switch that can turn on or off whenever you please. Regardless of what type of mental health you or someone you know are suffering never ignore it. Get help.
Just finished binge watching this and it's absolutely brilliant, and omg the lead actors breathe so much life into the Psycho world. So well done, damn.
Wow! This is very good. You've succeeded excellently in setting the two videos side by side and matching up their timing to compare and contrast the two. While I had some serious Hitchcock-Psycho-fandom moments watching the Bates Motel series, this video essay exposes just how great the show's homage and its departure were.
I'm very glad that you liked it so much! It makes it worth the effort
I love this. I watched this instead of doing like five different homework assignments but it gave me sO MUCH JOY! I love how parallel but updated the shower scene is! So good!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And good luck with your assignments :)
During 13:52, the cop scene in original movie was intended to make audience feel nervous cuz the police were wearing sunglasses and look through the camera which gives the feeling that he’s looking through you. But in the series the police doesn’t stare at the camera like that but Rihanna’s acting is great to make us nervous I wish the filmmaker in bate motel notice this little detail and add up to it
It makes me sad he's not dressed as mother when he kills Sam
Jesse M its because it's him this time and not her
Well he dressed up as mother to kill her in the first film so he thought he would dress up this time as well
@@jadotucker9810 wtf are you on about
@@jadotucker9810 why would they get backlash??
@@jadotucker9810 can you link it? If not, you aren't very reliable and are probably making this up - I don't see why a *remake* would get backlash for being like the original when that's the point of the show
Great side-by-side comparison of the movie's scenes with the Bates Motel show's scenes. I think another scene that was similar to Psycho was in Season 3 when Norma switches cars after running away, which can be compared to Marion switching cars in the movie before coming to the motel.
Yes, good point! I only focused on the last season though, but you're right, it would have been good to add scenes from other seasons as well!
And there was scene where after Norman kills bradly he dumps the car underneath water and in psycho as well
In season 4 where Norma locks Norman in his room it's a reference to psycho 2 where Norman is locked in the attic by Mary
Brooke Smith played Catherine Martin in Silence of the Lambs. Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill were based off the killer Ed Gein.
Excellent work. I LOVED how Bates Motel subverted the original and turned it on it's head.
Incredibly well made! A big thank you from a Psycho/Bates fanatic who needed some help with her media project :)
Freddie Highmore is a very good actor. He basically "resurrected" Anthony Perkins' classic portrayal of Norman Bates BUT Freddie didn't make it look mechanical. He looked natural and believable in portraying Norman in "Bates Motel". He put his own stamp on the character while, , at the same time, remaining true to the original character created by Anthony Perkins. Takes an extraordinary actor to do that.
I really enjoyed spotting the remade parts and how they changed them a little. I wish they had kept Arboghast as a private Dic though.
Wow I’ve watched all of the movies and even saw the show when it used to air on tv but never realized they straight up recreated entire scenes. I remember watching that shower scene and I was like “hey that’s a neat call back to the original movie”
I LOVED Bates Motel. I was a bit sceptical at first but a couple of episodes in and I was hooked. The biggest issue I had was the modern day setting but that was obviously the right thing to do. I think the writing is phenomenal and alot has gone into developing the characters further. Great series! Beautiful, darkly amusing, chilling. It's a shame Freddie Highmore didn't get a chance to meet the late great Anthony Perkins. He would have been proud of him.
Nobody would have dared to replace Norman Bates as long as Perkins was still alive.
@@DarthRushy I don't think so...Freddy Highmore's portrayal of this mentally ill guy is unbeatable!!It really makes you believe he's actually troubled...Not many actors can give you such a deep character...And I bet is hard AF to get it right on point...It's just the same in "The good doctor"...
You just believe he's actually an autistic boy
I'm sure Highmore's interpretation was fine, but if Perkins was still alive, I doubt they'd have recast Norman, he's so iconic in cinema history.
(at least after he played the part in the sequels - apparently Christopher Walken nearly got the role)
@@DarthRushy Sorry...but Highmore convinced me he was actually mentally ill in the series...Perkins didn't...SIMPLE AS THAT!!
That's when you notice a great interpretation!!
I suppose it's a matter of taste. Did you see the Perkins sequels to the original film?
25:53 I hate how they ended that scene. I really wanted to see Freddy do that speech, but then the phone cuts him off.
I never noticed the lady cop was the lady who played Dr.Hahn in Grey's
THIS is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to make this!
I'm so glad you like it!
I started watching BATES MOTEL because A.) I've seen every other thing on Psycho and Hitchcock that I could find, and B.) because I thought it was such a bad unnecessary idea that I wanted to see how horrible it was. This is me eating my words. This series was SO DAMN GOOD in so many ways by all parties involved. Smart decisions made clear across the board; writers, directors, scenery, wardrobe, props, cinematography, casting, acting and everything else. MASTERFUL!
Really interesting how they take the subtle acts and recreate them. Such as the chewing in the first scene here
This was pretty cool to watch..never saw the show but all the Anthony Perkins ones, can't believe Rianna played Marion lol bravo on this edit!💯📺

What a wonderful job on your video. As a longtime fan of the original who actually became a fan of the Bates Motel series, I loved seeing the side by side comparison. Thank you for the hard work.
you're welcome Tina, I'm so glad you like it
yes, thank you for making this side by side with the pauses when needed. it was very satisfying for a lifelong fan of the original movie. ive missed a season or 2 of the tv show and would have never seen this scene if not for here probably for a long time and yes the twists were amazing
Thank you, I'm happy that you like it
thanks for early release, Bates Motel and all these famous actors is top of the top. Love all those characters simply amazing.
First of all you did an amazing job with the side by side, I missed so many of these references watching the 5th season so thank you! And Freddie Highmore is absolutely fantastic as Norman! At many scenes he acts and sounds excactly Anthony Perkins
Wow, you're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
What kind of baffles me is the fact that Marion was able to hold off Norman longer than Sam could during the shower scene
He really looks like the guy in Psycho!
Freddie is a great actor!
Anothny Perkins
His name was Anthony Perkins.
THIS FILM ESSAY IS BRILLIANT! you should do more of this with other movies
Wonderful job. I need/want to watch the last season over again...Mother said so!!!
Thank you!
I’m truly obsessed with this Bates motel 🏨 old house is so beautiful love to visit there thank you so much for sharing 🙏🌹🥰
Great series 👏 fantastic acting by Freddie & Vera great chemistry, great ending was hooked from start to finish 👏
This is amazing oh my goodness thank you for taking the time to make this it’s perfect
Thank you! I'm glad you like it :)
Finally! This is proof that if they do a remake of Psycho and it can be modernized!
I agree! It's a great story so it can be set in different places or times and yet be still great
SuperTomServo its a prequel
And it's still shit! Yay!!!! -_-
The 1998 remakes failed because it was a straight rip
John Lennon the 5th season is a remake of Psycho
I love Bates Motel, I cosplay Norman and that being said it is a complex character and sometimes you have to take a break from in character cosplaying. take a break and laugh and sometimes just relax. lol
Thank you for making this, it's really well done!
I'm glad you like it!
Its so amazing to see how similiar Freddie and Anthony Perkins mannerisms are they even look the same. And the scene with the sheriff that was directed by Max so kudos to him for giving a nod to the movie.
thanks for putting this together. I have been looking for a video exactly like this since the show ended.
you're so welcome :)
This is fantastic!
Thanks for putting it together n sharing, great job!
thank you for liking it!
incredible work to put this together
I'm so glad you like it :)
Thank you so much for sharing the best shows very addictive 👍🥰🌹
Never watched the TV series before, but this was an awesome episode. Thank you, and nicely done.
I'm glad you like my video! I encourage you to watch the TV series, I really enjoyed it
👀Enjoyed.
Fantastic, amazing job 👏👏👏👍👍
Freddie Highmore is so goddamn good in this show, I almost WISH he had played Norman in a proper film remake of Psycho. But this show and its characters are so good that I'm totally fine that they won't.. No one can touch Anthony Perkins.
Psycho is a masterclass in suspense and direction, but Bates Motel is easily the 2nd best thing this franchise has ever done.
Yea but maybe tied with psycho 2
My goodness what an amazing show, I enjoyed it heaps.
And I think I also fell in love with Norma, she was like an angel!
Awesome!! As a fan of the original Movies ( Anthony Perkins as Norman Psycho movies ) I am a 46 year old fart lol. I loved the A&E series. Great Job A+ On your Essay. You obviously took some time on this and got it right. I hated to see the show go
thank you so much! I watched Psycho little before Bates Motel started. I mean, Hitchcock is Hitchcock haha, but I like a lot what the TV series did to the story. I'm sad that it's over now too
Robert Rogers pertaining to Bates Motel, I'm older than you and that show was excellent and I got hooked after the 1st show, 1st season. So it certainly wasn't a kiddy type show, hey I bought the DVD set because I just had to have it!
the actor who played norman bates on the psycho movie kinda looks like sheriff romero lmao
Wow this was great, this is what the remake should have been. You can see Mr. Highmore did his homework. Thank you.
Imagine if someone took all the most important scenes in season 5 and Re Created Psycho
Dude you maked a hard work
Whoo, that was intense! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
I wished A&E had played psycho original or 1998 version on tv before the series ended. That would have been a nice touch
It's on DVD, streaming and all the movie channels!
Thank god they did a proper remake and we could all forget about 1998.
genius for making this
Thank you so much!
That is actually really cool. On many levels
My many congrats and respect for your awesome work; you are very very talented. I am a fan of Psycho, and I really enjoyed your side by side. Precisely, it is much how Perkins and Highmore ended up, side by side.
He did it. He totally convinced me, and not only acting, but also writing, producing and directing several episodes. Cheers!!!
I'm glad you like it!
Sheeh Freddie this is a far cry from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
fabuluv right he was excellent in both!
Brava Marina... Ottimo lavoro 😊
Grazie mille :)
In loved how they did it. But I still would've loved if Marion was killed of and then Sam comes by suspecting Norman. Just to feel that I was watching a Psycho remake.
It would have been rather difficult to keep Rihannas rack off the screen while she was getting stabbed
Tony Perkins was SOOOO handsome!
No, Freddie Highmore is much better looking and far more handsome.
Come inside where it is nice and warm! How endearing and cute Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore). So funny 😊
Well done!
This is fantastic!
Thank you so much!
Good job!!!
Awesome job i luv it
thank you!!
You know, how can a 47 minute episode of a TV show be a better remake than the 1998 Psycho remake?
Freddie Highmore is the second Norman Bates next to Anthony Perkins!!!
Third if you include Vince Vaughn in 1998
Blasphemy!!
Thankyou so much for making this. As a huge fan of both psycho and bates motel, i rejoiced every time they paid subtle homage to it. Highmore did such an excellent job as norman bates and raised the bar to a whole new level. Oh one more thing i request you to include is the scene where the camera zooms out of sam loomis/marion crane's eye. I think u forgot to add that :)
Thank you, I'm happy that you like it. About your suggestion, thank so much, I did forget about that, but unfortunately I can't add that part now because the video is already uploaded :/
What I loved about the bates motel is meeting norman's mother.
Oh Charlie all that chocolate must have made you crazy 😮
lol 😂
INCREDIBLE
Anyone wanna come to mine for dinner? It's just...Sandwiches & Milk.
Be right over!
im still starstruck at rih's cameo thoo 🤩
Everything that the 1998 remake of PSYCHO should have been.
Really enjoyed this show. Not a fan of the twist they did, but YOU make up for it with this video!!! Nice job, really enjoyed this.
thank you so much! I think they made the twist because, if they had chosen to recreate exactly Psycho's plot, it would have never been as good as Hitchcock's, you know?
I agree, I am sure if they did it the same, it may not have been as good, and it was to be expected. Doing what they did gave it their Hitchcock twist.
I watched Bates Motel, but i never notice Rihanna was in it😳
John Gavin who played Sam in the original movie had a signed contract to play James Bond in 1971's Diamonds Are Forever. When Sean Connery was lured back Gavin was quietly paid off and sent on his way.
You. Are. Amazing.
Thank you so much!!!
I normally get irritated with callbacks and original sources because it feels like an inside joke. and I prefer the work to be its own thing. But the scene where they recreated the shot of Norman eating candy was spot on. And if I'm not mistaken the lady playing the Sherriff was in Silence Of The Lambs. Kind if fitting that after getting tossed in a pit of hell she would grow up to chase goons her self
Well done!!!
thank youuu!
Awesome job first I started to watch for the likeness of the movie and show and got all caught up in the soap opera boy when norman was stabbing up Sam I screamed give him another 😍 who didn't think that Sam deserved that
love this show
there no beating the classic
BRILLIANT
Norman Bates is the best character in the whole movie and t.v. show
