  • Sometimes binging a whole franchise just isn't feasible as there are only so many hours in the day. And you're often left with a lot of questions like: What was that sequel you liked again? When did the series start getting bad? Which is the most fun? We wanted to make it a little easier for those who wanted to either revisit or get into some horror franchises for the very first time. So join us as we tell you WTF You Need To Know about various popular horror movie franchises.
For our first episode, there's really no better franchise to look at than New Line's baby. With its extremely influential slasher at the lead with Freddy Krueger, to some of the most recognizable Scream Queens in the entire genre, there are few series as influential as this one. So if you haven't seen them, or you're just wanting a recap, let's dive into the Nightmare On Elm Street series.

But those people weren't in Black Christmas, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Enter the Dragon and John Saxon was.
    So John Saxon wins!

    • @fitnessabcvideo
      @fitnessabcvideo Před 2 lety +3

I mostly choose those for the following reasons:
The first is a classic and sets the lore and the rules up for what's to come, Nancy is also the first to defeat him so she's the female alpha of the series.
The second is great but still the dark tone that the first has so nothing that pushes the boundaries.
The third film is when the franchise steps into a new direction, music is on point, the group are amazing to follow and we get teenagers that can band together to fight freddy on his plane. It's also when Freddy develops the sarcasm and slightly comedic tone.
The fourth and 5th are good films and the kills are incredibly creative but I find it more of the same of part three. Part 6 is weak, even though some good moments it's easily the weakest of the series, I won't even bother going into detail on that one.
And a new nightmare was super fresh at the time with the meta take on the series bringing it into our world, again this is heather's character coming back to seal the demon of Freddy off and so it sounds up what I call the NANCY trilogy.
1st is a dark Freddy film
      3rd a fun Freddy film
New nightmare, a meta commentary on horror.

It's just a dull, lifeless remake with no imagination and failed to capture the magic and tone of the original movie. It doesn't try to do it's own thing and whenever it does something, it's too different that wouldn't fit in Freddy's character. And HELLO, it was a movie nobody asked for.

i truly feel like if you watch Freddy’s Dead as a spoof comedy instead of a serious horror, you can get QUITE a lot of entertainment out of it! that map scene alone is pretty fuckin hilarious, and that roseanne and tom arnold cameo just cements the fact that it’s meant to be a comedy!

Even if you looked at it as a comedy, it's not a funny one. Besides the map scene as you mentioned. But Freddy playing the power glove isn't funny, it's just eyebrow raising. I feel like it could've worked if Sam Raimi would've directed it since he is the master of balance comedy with horror. Even the movies before like Dream Warriors and Dream Master had scenes of Freddy being comedic but they were actually funny lines and moments he would do.

It's so funny when you think about this franchise and then you watch the first film which is much more horror focused. And then you get the part three and somebody realized, " oh, they are dreaming! We could do some crazy shit!"
The Dream Warriors really started the whole focus on Freddy as the main character with wonderful quips and kills.
I wasn't allowed to see R-rated films but a lot of my friends were so I would just go over their house when they would rent something and watch it there.
I had read in fangoria that part 6 the Final Nightmare was going to be in 3D!
They did not mention that somehow they were going to tie the 3D glasses in the film as some type of device to catch Freddy lol.
"Put these on! It's the only way you can see Freddy's head explode!"/
I remember lying to my mom and getting her to take my friend and I to the movie theater to see Hot Shots.
But we lied and got into see Freddy's Dead. And we would have gotten away with it had I hid my 3D glasses Somewhere In My Room rather than leaving them on top of my dresser for her to see them.
I was such a bad liar when I was a kid but that sure is kit didn't stop me from trying. I tried to tell her that somebody else had given me the glasses when we were at the theater LOL.

I had my own pitch for a Nightmare on Elm Street movie would be more psychological and more of a homage to part 3 and 4. The simple idea is that What if Freddy stalked a psychiatrist and fucked with her mind? What unique idea for a demon who plays with our minds messes with a woman who tries to help others. Fancasting for the counselor: Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She's a very talented, intelligent actress who's always the light to any movie even if they're bad and has very powerful eyes and a sweet voice that makes her feel like an innocent but vulnerable person that makes you feel sorry for het when she's in danger.
My idea would have her meet a patient who's a surviving victim who has tons of cuts across her face and body and believe it was a suicidal attempt. They bond as friends and her patient named Shyanne Santmyer shows her she has the power to control her dreams and keep Freddy away and we would see the good dreams these characters have and not nightmares. We also learn that Springwood does a Jason Lives move: They renamed Elm Street to "Cherry Street" and demolished the original 1428 house to cover up evidence that Freddy ever existed. But since then, Freddy is stalking the psychiatrist (named Bridget) who is revealed to be one of the original Elm Street children attacked by Freddy just before he was arrested. Bridget has had a trauma on Freddy and lives in NYC but decides to move back to help children with their dreams and she learned to dream about good and positive things in her dreams and haven't dreamt anything on Freddy until early on in the movie.
We would also explore Freddy's childhood that he was obsessed with dreams himself and learned to get in contact with it. He also was in contacts with a ancient demon who traveled through many dimensions and appears in dreams before Freddy. (Basically I'm trying to connect New Nightmare's lore with the original. Ignoring the sperm Demons from part 6 since I didn't like that one.) Which gives him the power to go to other people's dreams and can kill them in their sleep with this demon, so when he died, the two bonded to one entity of it's own. And the glove was inspired by the demon's chainmail glove he used to kill villagers centuries ago. Now Freddy's the modern version of the demon.
Present day, Freddy learns he can't hurt Bridget because her Shyanne successfully scares him away with fire. She controls her dreams and she wants to teach her doctor the same with her gift of dreaming positive ones. It's here we learned that Shyanne loved to nap everyday at a certain time to explore a Wonderland or Oz world of dreams, it's not just her own dreams, it's a planet of worlds of dreams kids imagine of and explore to but one days, she accidentally encountered the bad side of dreams where she met Freddy who is jealous she leans to control her dreams and since then, he has tried to wear her powers down enough to make her variable to reach her considering she is now depressed and bitter in her personal life. And Shyanne thinks because of her cut scars, she thinks she doesn't have enough time to live so that's why she wants to teach Bridget to have the same skills she has. And she gives Bridget her old dreamcatcher and calls her The Dream Walker - "A lucid dreamer (person able to take control of or actively determine the path of their own dreams). - Or a Person who appears frequently in or who vividly haunts your dreams, usually in a positive way."
But because the hospital is full of ignorant doctors, they feel Bridget is not good to Shyanne, wishing to replace Hypnocile with different pills and replace her with someone else, this stress causes Freddy to barely slip in Shyanne's head and cuts her wrists deep, making it look like a morbid suicide. This causes Bridget to slowly loose her mind now that she lost her best friend and begins having nightmares of Freddy more than before with Freddy believing he's now the Dream Walker instead of Shyanne and acts like he's her doctor in her dreams. Which causes her to have therapy herself in a bit of irony. He also explains he doesn't just want to kill people in Elm Street since he's gotten used to the new name and wants to kill anybody, anywhere in the world since everyone sleeps besides Springwood. Even worse that Bridget's boyfriend gets in a accident and is how in a coma where Freddy can forever mess with.
The final effort to stop Freddy and save more people is to find what makes Freddy afraid when he was alive and discovers it was his abusive foster father Mr. Underwood. She turns Shyanne's dreamcatcher into a necklace and goes to the Freddy house in the nightmare world. She frees her boyfriend and she uses her powers she learned from Shyanne and turns herself into Mr. Underwood which Freddy is horrified of that he screams and tries to run away. Successfully weakening him. She/he punches his chest open which causes his souls to fly out and his house begins to burn down.
Huge fire burns through the skull of his eyes and his body dissolves to slimy muck before beginning to grow a black cloud that continues to expand. Bridget and her boyfriend flees the house just before it explodes, destroying everything. The growing black cloud punches through as the debris rains down. The dark cloud then turns white as the souls fly to the sky. The nightmare is over and Freddy is dead. We see her Shyanne as a spirit hug her as Bridget fails to hold her tears and she tells her it's time to wake up. (A la the ending of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.) Bridget wakes up and hurries to the hospital to see her husband who successfully awakens.
We then cut to a couple months later and we see Bridget's own therapy is better and she still has her job as a therapist, she mentions she would like to thank someone in her life who helped her guide her dreams steadily and always dream positive. She decides to move away from Springwood Incase she has to deal with Freddy again and because she's still alive, Freddy can't leave Springwood if god-for-bid he comes back and she safely returns back to New York City. The story ends with Bridget sitting next to a healed Shyanne on a bence in a glowing, beautiful park, nothing dark or any sign of Freddy. Maybe a few kids running around like T2's alternate ending. Despite not being in Springwood, she takes Shyanne wherever she goes in her dreams. They smile and look into the beautiful sky in a quiet, somber way. We pull back to see everything is better in Bridget's dream and reality. Fading to white. The end.

If they do another nightmare, I would like to see Robert as Freddy in some compacity. Maybe not the whole movie if he doesn't want. But I feel like he needs a proper farewell. New nightmare was great. But it wasn't the real Freddy that died in the end. He was last decapitated by a 7ft tall mommas boy. Robert is a great actor. A great guy. And Freddy is great character and villain.

Although it has been confirmed that FvJ isn't canon either. It's supposed to be in it's own timeline like Alien vs. Predator was. Even Robert Englund doesn't consider it a NOES movie because it's a crossover, not a sequel.

@@brandonspain12345 fair point. In that case tho, I'd still like to see him in a proper death. Getting blown up by a daughter that we just found out he had, and never hinted at, while destroying those 3 sperm looking "dream demons" that also just showed up in one of his sillier later movies in that cgi explosion kinda felt like all his other deaths. Like he's just gonna come back. Even if that's not a good reason, I just want one more outing with Mr. Englund as freddy

If they wanted to do an actual remake of Nightmare on elm street. (or perhaps even a last chapter to pass the torch I suppose.) They could open up with the iconic glove making scene in silence and just the unnerving sounds of the glove being made. Then cut to a frightening dream sequence with one of the kids (probably Tina or the Tina stand in if they go passing of the torch.) Then she’s saved by waking up and of course the parent not taking her seriously. She talks about her frightening dreams with her friends. Hint at the other children having scary dreams too. The children all have a sleepover After a second dream sequence the first of the children die. (Probably the Tina character unless you are going passing of the torch.) at the funeral of the first child the others notice strange pictures of their friend as an infant with an older child holding them or the family together with both children. One of the other children (our Nancy stand in or just one of the kids if it’s passing of the torch) looks through their families boxes of old pictures in an old attic and finds pictures of their parents with an older sibling too. They then find a picture of a bunch of kids from town together with the older sibling at the preschool Freddy worked at. (Including Freddy in the picture.) they ask their parents about the photo and get nowhere because the parents refuse to acknowledge the child and photo. This child shows the photo to their remaining friends and pointe out that each of them share a last name with each of the kids in the photo. The smart boy of the group looks up the children’s names online and discover they were all murdered within the same year. Stumbling across the Freddy Kruger case. He also discovers that the children are their older siblings. the three or four other kids in the photo have dead younger siblings (their parents moved out of spring wood) who died in their sleep too. Another of the friends dies during the research introducing the idea of micro naps. (The smart kid gives the others his research on it after the death to show what happened.) The main girl confronts their parents with this information and the parent finally comes clean after being confronted with the other children’s deaths and the fact that they had an older sibling and know about it. The parents say that they didn’t tell them because it happened before they were born and wasn’t their cross to bear, the parents just wanted to forget about it and move on. Freddy can’t hurt them because the parents killed him where he murdered their siblings. The group gets back together and realize only one person of them isn’t having nightmares about Freddy (the skeptic this whole time.) and they’ve been taking a ptsd drug (most drugs used to treat ptsd and anxiety stop REM sleep.) when all is revealed they decide it’s time to take Freddy down. (If it’s a passing of the torch it’s revealed that the eldest kid on ptsd drugs is the child of Freddy who was adopted by one of the victims parents under the table. Why they are on the drugs.) the 2-3 kids left decide if anyone can pull Freddy out it’s the cynical one because they aren’t as exhausted as the other kids (and they are Freddy’s kid if it’s a passing of the torch) they boobie trap a selected location home alone style. Give doses of the ptsd med to the other kids and rest while they wait for it to wear off on the targeted kid. Now the ending depends on if it’s a remake or passing of the torch. If it’s a remake they pull Freddy out he attacks them and they ultimately all take his power away like Nancy did in the first one ending in them hugging it out in relief only to find themselves stumbling back into a nightmare. (It takes time for a ptsd medication to work. They didn’t know that.) if it’s a passing of the torch Freddy is running out of time and juice and wants his abused and resented kid to continue his revenge against the others ending in Freddy and his kid dying after his kid turns on the others and in death his child takes his place as a dream murderer.

My favorite horror franchise followed by Hellraiser (up until Hellworld). My favorite movie of the franchise is Dream Child and my favorite final girl is Alice. I also love that, contrary to most horror franchises, this one gave us an ending (as bad as it was), Plus, they gave us an "extra" placing back Freddy as a scary character with New Nightmare. And even beyond that we got Freddy vs Jason that I don´t count as an official sequel to the franchise (be it after Freddy´s Dead or New Nightmare). To me FvJ is its own thing.
