  • NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5 - The Black Sheep
In the latest episode of The Black Sheep, we take a look back at Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. Starring Robert Englund, Lisa Wilcox, and Kelly Jo Minter, and is directed by the legendary Stephen Hopkins (director of Predator 2, Ghost and the Darkness, and Judgement Night). Released less than a year after The Dream Master, this under-performed at the box office compared to previous entries.
Many fans consider this the beginning of the downfall of the Nightmare series but with an energetic directing style, bizarre kills, and bright ‘80s color palette, Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child holds up better than most remember and fits right along with visual dreamscapes of the later sequels. Is Dream Child the Black Sheep of the series? Let’s nap on it!
THE BLACK SHEEP is an ongoing video series giving the horror underdog a fair shot i.e. putting the spotlight on films that the masses loathed but that we on AITH esteemed on varied levels. And sometimes we do the opposite - rip a beloved film a new one! Watch

Alice's evolution through 4 and 5 is great character development. And it doesn't hurt that Lisa Wilcox was, and still is, gorgeous.

Part 5 aint all that bad, I saw it and I genuinely had fun. The only bad thing is that the MPAA butchered the kills, that still bugs me to this day.

I always considered 3 through 5 a connected bridge of continuity. Going from Nancy and Kristin to Alice as the trio of protagonists for Freddy. I can enjoy New Nightmare as sort of its own thing. A conclusion for Craven and Leggencamp outside the boundaries of fiction into reality. And then Jason/Freddy is kind of this alternate dimension story of horror franchises existing in the same plane.

Part 5 is my favourite of the franchise and I agree that there is no unwatchable Freddy movie. I love all 9

Nightmare 4 and 5 are the peak of the fantasy of the series and horror genre in the late 80s imo, and 5 really upped the game with the fantasy elements, the visuals and soundtrack are simply outstanding. I also feel the new characters are very likable despite not having as many deaths as in 3 and 4, their deaths are more creative and Mark's death is actually quite sad IMO. By bringing Amanda Krueger back it brought closure to the series. I think more people should give this film a chance and notice its beauty. Criminally underrated.

I can forgive calling Freddy’s Dead watchable, but I cannot forgive calling H20 unwatchable

I absolutely wasn't a fan of Dream Child but I can't fully blame Stephen Hopkins as he had a RIDICULOUSLY short amount of time to get this film done. New Line rushed the hell out of him and the film. It's definitely well shot and visually it's one of the best in the series but overall the movie itself just wasn't good. After this Stephen went on to direct Predator 2 which I thought he did an awesome job.

I'm of the opinion that there's only two major horror franchises, and they're Friday The 13th, and Nightmare On Elm Street.

@JoBlo, as the actor who plays Freddy's mom, the nun Amanda Krueger in this film (NOES 5- the Dream Child), I appreciate 🙏your thoughtful and courageous review of our super rushed, lower budget little sequel, that, yes, came out on the heels of the success of #3 & #4, and suffered from the upset that was obviously felt by the Dream Warriors fans, who would, of course, miss the characters they had grown to love. Plus, with all the big block busters that came out that year, Dream Child had so many strikes against it from the start. But I am grateful that you saw the beauty of strength of the movie, despite all the haters out there. And many Elm St. fans who put #5 as their least fave, often feel different if they watch it again, as an adult, and, without comparing it to 3 & 4, but as its own story in its own right. If anyone reading this is a huge Elm Street fan, I would recommend reading the pre-quel/back story I wrote: The Krueger Curse - Nightmare Before Elm Street. It's written by myself, in the voice of Amanda Krueger, and it delves into Freddy's childhood and growing up, right until he is killed by the mob of parents, setting us up for the very first Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It answers a lot of the unanswered questions that fans might have.

Dream Child had the bad luck of being released in the summer of '89, when Batman, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, and even Freddy's rival, Jason, Went To Manhattan that summer. Hard to make a profit in a field of competitors such as that.

Dream Child is one of my favorites for sure! Love the creativity of the story, Lisa Wilcox's performance, the gothic imagery and the ending. I also love the kids. Dan, Yvonne, Greta and Mark have fun and relatable personalities which is more than most horror franchises.

Till this day the death of Dan still disturbs me the fusion of him and the motorcycle.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. This is definitely in the minority when I say this, but this is in my top 3 for my favorites in the franchise. It's frankly part of my child-hood. That dream-like, unbalanced, off-kilter atmosphere is what I live and breathe for. JoBlo forever!

Ive seen this series a ton of times. On my last viewing, my rankings of the films really moved around. I grew a new appreciation for 5 and 6. I agree that 2 is the best make up job by far. Freddy looks so creepy. 2 is very underrated.
