    Got to love long warranties like that. Somewhat related: In 2004 I had my 1968 model year Beetle serviced at a VW dealership. When I got the car back, part of the bill read: Replaced crankcase ventilation, cost 0. I asked about it. Turned out, the mechanic they had working on my car, was close to retirement age and had worked at the dealership since before my car was built. So he knew these old aircooled cars in and out, and he'd noticed that the crankcase ventilation on my car was of a type they routinely replaced back in the day, free of cost, as it could cause a major oil leak. Thing was, he had an original rebuild kit lying around in his garage at home, and he gave it to me for free. He just loved getting to work on an old Beetle again.

      Not as deep a connection, but I used to have a parts guy at my local Ford mega dealer. I would come in for parts for my 15 year old Escort. He had a long history with those cars, so if he thought he could get away with it, he would just write off my regular maintenance parts as "courtesy items". We would just nod and smile at the cash. This brings back great memories. Roughly six years ago, I was driving my 2007 e350 down the highway when my sunroof glass flies off, and I see it in my rear view like a frisbee. Of course, I take it to my preferred shop and get it repaired right away. Later that year, after replacing the sunroof, a jeep hits me, and the car is totaled. I replaced that car with another w211- a 2007 e550. Years later, I received a letter in the mail from Mercedes-Benz about a recall on the sunroof. I went to the dealership, got my e550 inspected for free, and was reimbursed for the replacement sunroof for my e350, which was totaled years before.

Water pump, intake manifold gaskets (since mine was an early one it still had the factory plastic manifold spacers that were completely shot), valve cover gaskets, PCV breather pipe, etc. Also did spark wires and distributor caps/rotors, again, since it's an early M120. Mine needs motor mounts too but I haven't done them yet. I also did the upper timing cover seals while I was in there, they are known to leak and when it's already that far apart it's pretty easy to get the upper timing covers off. Literally 2 cars were found with the issue in the entire world, out of many that used this particular booster design, and they decided to issue an urgent recall telling people not to drive the affected cars and providing rentals until the repair is performed... However, there's a few million cars affected, and they are behind on replacement parts. Again... They found 2 cars with rusted out boosters, out of a few million, and they're replacing all of them.

    Though a bad water pump bearing could cause vibration and resuled in the fan's damage, I wonder if the fan went first, lost a blade due to fatigued/cracked aluminum and then when it became unbalanced as a result it put major stresses on the water pump shaft bearings and fan clutch. Chicken and egg I suppose :) (But to choose, I think the fan went first and took out the pump and clutch)

    • @BlagoP
      @BlagoP Před rokem +12

      There's nothing impressive about it, it's the exact opposite. The brake pump has a shit design and people fought for the warranty. The pump uses an electric motor to build pressure for the system to work. Problem is the electric motor wears out with time and once it does, you lose the brakes other than a slight force onto the front brakes just to get you home, driving at slow speeds. Originally there was no extra warranty on the pump other than the car's warranty. But with all the problems people started having and because it's the fucking brake system, the most important system in the car, Mercedes extended it to 10 years, followed by 15 years and then to 25 years. With the face-lift of the W211 E class, Mercedes got rid of the SBC system. They spent a billion dollars to develop it only to end up using it for a few years on 4 different models (E class, SL, SLR and Maybach). It was a failure for Mercedes.

    • @SturbokSensei
      @SturbokSensei Před rokem +12

      They did not do that out of the goodness of their heart. A lot of litigation had to happen and i believe a class action lawsuit also. People talk about the decline of Mercedes quality and THIS is the exact pinnacle moment it started to go down the drain. I mean if you design a brake by wire system, why in the hell would you make it have a BRUSHED electric motor on the pump meaning the lifespan is limited. On cars that were supposed to be "The Best or Nothing"!

    Sbc is an amazing, maybe the best brake system ever produces. Incredible stopping force. In an emergency the system knows, wheel speed, stering angle, g forces, how hard and quick you are pushing the pedal. If you are pushing the gas. And so on. When it works it is amazing in my opinion.
