- This police van stopped in front of the pedestrian crossing to let an old man cross, but this driver decided to ignore the pedestrian and drove right into him. This action pushed the elderly man back and led to a fall. The most bizarre thing is that the whole incident happened right in front of the police officers, who first ensured the man was okay and then activated their sirens and went after the negligent driver.

People take advantage of such a law to abuse thier right. That pedestrian could have waited, yet just went out there. That law sucks. Where I live cars stop for pedestrians throught shopping crosswalks. I as well as other walkers stop and signal a driver to just go ahead. They politely wave thank you.
The reason I let them go is bc I have walking disability and am slow. If it's raining, they just tell me to go ahead.

It's Poland, trust me the BMW driver don't have license an 30 minutes after this event, they didn't rush because they already had the plates on dash cam, in my country it's so strict with this I wouldn't be shocked if he is in jail

It also informs you that if you see a car slowing down before a pedestrian crossing or stopping in front of it, you must also stop. Because for not stopping or overtaking another car before a pedestrian crossing or on a crossing, there is also a fine of 350 euros.
Anyway not all drivers in Poland respect this law. I felt by myself last summer. 🙁

In Germany you have to approach a zebra crossing with caution. When a pedestrian is seen with the intent to cross, drivers have to stop, but the pedestrian also has to give drivers time to react. So you can't just change direction and walk onto the road, you have to look also for cars.

I'm not usually one to argue with a german about safety or rules, but what is the actual point of painting a crossing on the road if it doesn't place the responsibility onto the driver.
It's the pedestrians job not to get run over literally all the time, i think it's fair enough to give them extra leeway at a marked crossing.

In Jamaica we have a saying "You will never see a car in the hospital". It does not matter who's fault it is if you are dead. I suggest waiting till all vehicles stop before walking infront of them. Remember, you cannot control crazies, you can only control your actions.
When I was a kid in the 70s/80s in the US, this was common…we were taught always double check and be responsible for ourselves. In todays world, people seem to just assume they are in the right and all drivers are aware, alert and looking out for them.

I agree. The car gave no indication that it was about to stop neither did the police. The police should've gotten out to show his intent to allow him to cross or had his lights on not just sit at the crosswalk.

To be fair, the pedestrian simply stepped out without checking, leaving the car with no chance to stop. While cars must remain vigilant, pedestrians also bear responsibility for their actions. I hope the old guy was ok.

What made it so wrong, was not getting out of the car to check if the man was ok instead left the scene. Which, I'm positive, that is what made the police mad and decide to chase him/her.
He did look. He was no longer looking when he walked forward. The car was going slow He probably thought he was going to stop, which he should have done which became a must have done once he stepped out.

The pedestrian also needs to wait for traffic to clear. You cant step out in front on moving traffic and expect cars to stop on a dime.
It's different for each country. In Germany for example, cars have to stop when pedestrians are trying to cross.
Pedestrians have the right of way on marked roads like this. If it comes to a collision, the colliding driver is 100% at fault. Avoiding this instance works by paying attention to the surroundings and see if pedestrians are about to cross the road. If a bicycle rider crosses the road, they have to walk. If they ride their bicycle over the markings without looking, the oncoming traffic has no time to react. If it comes to a collision here with evidence, it comes to either a 50%/50% chance of fault or the bicycle rider 100%. It would depend if you have a dash cam in this situation.

Witnessed something like this over here in the U.S, and it was a BMW driver too. He was on the left behind a car that had stopped for a pedestrian; on the right was also a car that was stopping for the pedestrian, at the same level as the BMW driver, leaving a gap of about a car length from the pedestrian.
The BMW driver floored it into the gap and peeled off as the pedestrian was starting to cross.
Almost ruined my day cuz it seemed so intentionally cruel and evil.

By law in Europe (as most EU countries have same mandated laws to make it easier for people to drive around, and this is Poland) if a vehicle is stopped on the roadway (even if it's coming the other way) you are supposed to stop as well before moving on, also if a pedestrian walks towards / has intention to cross the road at a crosswalk, you as a driver are required to stop for them, the signs protect the pedestrian.
But your thing is more about the actual logic of it, and everyone is supposed to do / taught to do as you said, you don't just walk into the path of a moving vehicle just because there's a sign saying there's a zebra crossing there, that is if you want to not get run over by a BMW driver, you first check, if someone's coming towards you, you make sure they stop before you walk in front of them, because that's how you stay alive, it doesn't matter if you were in the right if your dead afterall.

nope, driver is obligated to stop when pedestrians is approaching zebra crossing. Failure to do so will cost driver 350€ and penalty points. Bear in mind that this happened in populated area,likely in town when special caution is necessary. There is no excuse for the driver action.

Doesn't matter what country. You as a person for your own safety should stop and look both ways before entering the roadway. Some people can't just stop.
First rule of crossing a roadway is STOP AND LOOK before proceeding- EVEN IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY! Always make sure the DRIVER is HONORING that right, and obeying the law- otherwise this shit happens. Does not absolve the driver, but does keep you from potentially being harmed. It is also the way he entered without looking that contributed to this accident. Yes, the car driver was wrong for failing to stop for the person in the crosswalk- but to not look is stupid.

I had the same, I stopped at the crossing to let a mother and a small child criss the road, from the other side a policecar nearly hit them. They had no siren or flashing blue lights on. I was furious. They didn't even stop.

Just because you stopped does not mean the other driver knew your intentions to stop for the pedestrian, who immediately steps out into traffic without looking. The pedestrian was not hit, but tripped on his own feet trying to get out of the path of the car. Since the driver did nothing wrong, he wasn’t required to stop but as a courtesy should have, to give assistance if he was hurt falling.
Saw this happen once at a strip mall that had a day care in it along with a Dollar Tree. A little old man tripped and fell into the road, this guy driving a truck was flying down the road of the strip mall, he blew by the stop sign almost hitting a mom carrying her baby in a carrier and almost swiped a couple cars in the parking lot when he couldn't stop cause he was driving so fast or rubpn over the man. Two cops were helping the old man up after they were leaving Dollar Tree after the old man. The guy stopped next to Dollar Tree at the TSC. I could not believe those cops screaming at this idiot. He got a reckless driving ticket, a speeding ticket and pulling through a stop sign without stopping. It was insane

The man that fell may have injured himself but I didn't see anyone ask his name or phone number to check on him!! My 101 yo great aunt had a minor slip and fall and walked around on a fractured hip 3 days before having Xrays. They pinned it and 3 days later she died. I hope the UK Police change that into a policy.

In this case, the guilty person is the pedestrian who, contrary to Art. 14.1a enters directly in front of a moving vehicle, also onto a pedestrian crossing, which is prohibited in Polish regulations. The BMW driver did not stop to provide help, which is also a punishable offense.
Crosswalks kill more pedestrians than anything. Too many think drivers are aware of them. Just last week a car stopped to let an old lady pass - she waved to the driver and was crushed by a car from the other direction. All cross walks should have traffic signals at them.
If you watch, the person walking was in the drivers blind spot the whole time. As the car moved forward so did the man. Yes the driver as at fault (and didn't stop) but you don't step off a curb (even at a crosswalk) without waiting for the driver to stop or acknowledge you. I've seen teens with earbuds in, looking at phone, step in front of cars so many times without so much as looking up. Pedestrians may have right away but that's little comfort in hospital.

What I have observed, in recent years, is that "courtesy " is disappearing from today's roads, and that common sense is being bred out of the human race. Both losses explain this event, and are, most likely, part of the cause of all the road rage incidents, happening today. 😢😢😢

This offense recorded from a car camera is from Poland. From 2022, pedestrians in Poland have priority at pedestrian crossings and the driver is obliged to adapt to the road situation.

The pedestrian jumped in front of the car as it was nearing the crosswalk. He should've been more careful. No car has enough brakes to stop that fast. That's basically suicide.

That pedestrian waited for the car and then stepped out right in front of him. He made it look like he was waiting for the car to pass, then stepped out just at the most inappropriate time. Stupid things like that get people hurt. Your laws are ridiculous and allow for passive-aggressive bullying of cars by pedestrians.

For everyone saying that the pedestrian should look both ways and ensure that it is safe to cross. This is Poland. The law says that a driver must be cautious when getting near crossing, and the pedestrian nearing crossing has the right of way.
To be fair tho, this situation is very sketchy. If You are a Polish driver you know very well about this law and the BMW should be slowing down seeing a person even near a crossing. SO new driver/ distracted/ imported
