  • DO NOT Buy These 5 Mercedes Benz Luxury Cars!
Mercedes Benz is normally an amazing luxury car brand that's known for style, power, reliability, and luxury in most of their cars. There are some real issues though with these 5 worst Mercedes Benz luxury cars. You'll find some seriously unreliable cars, and a lot of talk about rust.
There are just certain #Mercedes #Benz #cars to avoid because of #reliability, and these are the ones I think you should watch out for.

We have owned two Mercedes-Benz W163s. The first was a 1999 ML320. The second was a 2002 ML500. The 1999 model did have power lock issues and the heater didn't work on the passenger side. Otherwise, the vehicle was reliable, fuel efficient and comfortable. We drove the 2002 ML500 about 133,000 trouble-free miles. We owned a 2008 ML320CDI and drove it about 133,000 reliable and fuel efficient miles. If we hadn't suffered extensive hail damage, we would have continued to enjoy the vehicle. We still own and enjoy our 2008 GL320CDI. It has delivered 187,000 trouble-free and comfortable miles. It is comfortable for long drives and delivers excellent fuel economy.

With 256,000 miles on my 1998 C230 Sport, non-Kompressor, my only regret is not getting the optional passenger power seat. I never thought I would own it for 23 years. Repairs, tires, belts, hoses, and maintenance cost around $600 a year, give or take. I got 13 years out of the original battery, and 10 years out of the second. It's a California car, still looks great, no rust, I treated the paint with a ceramic coating, and I perform all of the required maintenance on it. I'm told by my independent Mercedes mechanic that it's the last of the "forever" Mercedes, whatever that means.

I currently own two of the cars on you list. S500, and R500. I have had minimal issues over the years. The S500 did require suspension around 100K miles. No transmission problems, no rust and it is now 18 years old 190k miles. The R500 I replaced the air suspension around 70k miles. Other than the two batteries, no other problems. I live in Southern California, maybe that's why I dont deal with the rust.

I've dealt with many of the issues you've discussed, but even when I add up all of the repair costs, it's been a cheap vehicle to keep over the long haul. I still use it to haul 2 boats that weigh over 5000 pounds. My wife and I use if for very long haul trips. It's never left me stuck on the side of the road. The build quality, ride, torque, power, tech and comfort levels are beyond the BMW's, Land Rover and Jaguar I have owned in the last 20 years. Sunroof failed because it was a bit older by the time it failed and I ended up just scanning together cup holders amongst “settling”. I presumed you had the prefacelift version of the W163?
I bought my first one owner 2004 ML350 in China 8 years ago it had 140K km on it, it was 8 years old then, we added 60K km to it, most of them added when we took it for extended driving holiday, one of our holiday was 3 months with 15k km in the Xinjiang province in China, where some stretches of road were uninhabited for more than 100km and with no cellphone coverage, but we felt completely confident with it.
Cars of this age has the usual wear and tear but nothing unexpected, and find a good garage who knows how to service it properly is important, as I had a bad experience at the garage that a friend recommended who did not has the proper tool to replace the suspension arm ball joints and use a brutal method and hammering it in, damaging all 4 dust covers of the brand new ball joints. It broke down once due to failed fuel pump. Maintenance is relatively cheap if one knows a little about car and where to find cheap and good quality parts. When the U joint was worn the Mercedes dealership quoted about US1000 for the whole prop shaft assembly, as Mercedes do not sell the U Joint alone, aftermarket part dealers do not sell the U joints alone too. But I managed to find information online that Dana spicer supplied the U joint to Mercedes so had two U joints replaced for about USD50 (parts only) This car is still with me.
With the good experience of the first W163, I bought another single owner 2003 ML350, also with 140K km when we relocated to Malaysia. Added 30K to it during the 4 years ownership. It is just as good as the one we had in China. This car is 18 years old now.
I have to add that both cars had a complete oil change (motor oil, trans, axle, brake fluid, radiator flush etc.) after I bought them. Kept up to oil changes religiously. Both cars are rust free, they were well look after by their previous owners.
We may be relocating to Austria, I am contemplating buying another W163. This time it may be the ML270 diesel.
While I actually prefer the look of the prefacelift version, I did hear that the prefacelift version (pre-2002) are problematic and best to avoid and I have seen poorly maintained facelifted examples that were terrible too.
These were expensive cars, probably about the same price as the S class, and 5-10 times the price of Corolla if not more, there are lots of special features that ordinary cars do not have, it is unfair to compare these with a basic Corolla for maintenance as there are inadvertently a lot more things to fail and to replace, especially if they were neglected by their previous owners and skimmed on maintenance.
I have to admit that the W163 do not feel as well built, nor as comfortable as my other vintage Mercedes W124 and W202.
My advice to buying one is to buy a post 2002, 1-2 owners, well maintained and low mileage one, even if it cost twice more than the cheap and poorly maintained ones. Be prepared to budget for at least a 5 times more than a Corolla for annual maintenance. It takes 8 litres of fully synthetic motor oil, 12 iridium spark plugs that cost a bomb, but they last a long time, in between the 90k km I had with two cars I have only changed one set of spark plugs.
a well look after W163 is certainly a great buy.

Yeah, I've owned an X164 (GL450) and a W251 (R350 BlueTEC) out of warranty. There were some expensive repairs, and I ended up getting rid of the latter because of numerous issues. However, I think that they were great cars and would have both of them again. I think they were more worthwhile than my Porsche Cayenne S, to be honest. My mom's W211 (E500W4) is the best Mercedes that I've had. Absolutely no major problems. I spend probably about $200-300/year on maintenance and repairs. I've also really enjoyed my X166 (GL63 AMG). However, it's only 5 years old now and at 42k miles. It did have a major repair recently, but I am still under warranty.

It certainly can vary but the higher up the food chain chances are the pricier the repairs, potentially.

@@ECPP I have a 2019 Audi Q8 and even though I have only had it since May 2019, I have been very pleased at how incredibly reliable it has been. For a debut model, there have only been two dealership visits aside from 10k maintenance. A b-pillar rattle and a software update to address the throttle lag that customers (including me) were complaining about. I don't think I've ever been more pleased with a car than I have been my Q8.

@I CU I had to replace the suspension at 78k miles ($5k at Indie). Power steering leak, just topped off annually no problem. CD player stopped working, no one could fix it recommended replacing entire COMAND system-way too expensive. Otherwise, not too many issues. The car is now with my aunt who I sold it to at 105k miles. She is enjoying it. It's a 2010 GL450.

WHILE SEARCHING FOR RECALLS AND CRAPPY BENZ’ the gl was on the lists. Do some research before warranty ends and trade!!! Bmw with 400 series with b58 motors are super reliable. Have Toyota Supra motors in them!

    I have a 96 C220 2.2L, 26 years old.
    In perfect condition.
I just put in an 800 watt power amplifier to the original Becker radio along with a digital music light display unit where the cassette holder is also a dual 3.0 USB charger.
Mine has the head light wipers .
I'm looking into a turbo charger for this engine so I won't need a 6 cylinder.
