In this video we break down EXACTLY what effect video games have on our brains, why games aren't fun anymore, why you have a lack of interest in games and how we can make them fun again. With some research into neuroscience we can understand just what's going on in our heads and take action and countermeasures to bring games back to life.

Discord is the reason why. People now only talk to their friends on discord and mute in game voice so no one can really even make new friends. I spend a week in halo MCC playing competitive with 5 hours a day an i didnt not run into one player with a mic. Only time i hear someone with a mic its to tell me to stop talking and doing call outs.
funny you say that, I've noticed something similar. It seems like in game chats aside from like CSGO are just way more dead.

The older i get (30 y/o), the harder it is for me to enjoy games. I just always have this nagging thought in the back of my mind saying, "I should be doing something else right now." Even when its a fun game.

I feel the same way. I feel like the older I get the less I play. Sooner or later I guess I'll just stop playing, stop buying new stuff. Whether I like that thought I'm unsure.
I use to feel the same way but after a long days hard work I feel like I deserve it because yes I got something done. The thought of doing something else came to me even on my days off so I just got off my ass and did something that would make me feel accomplished for the day then , play something before bed now I don’t feel that way anymore.

i've been saying for a couple of years now that game developers are soo focused on their games looking amazing, they completely put playability on the backburner. i don't care what anybody says, ray tracing does not instantly make a game good/fun.
This is because the industry is getting us ready for vr. The need cgi to be indistinguishable from real life. I’m in school going into this industry. It’s depressing to know really.

This is the second video I've watched about the neuroscience behind this, and I think my problem is that I've short-circuited the reward cycle by watching others play games and by looking up information related to those games - both in every moment of spare time I have. As a result, when I get home and sit down to play games, it's like the actual playing is too much work for even less reward compared to opening up 10 game wiki pages and watching 5 tutorials and 2 LP episodes.
Yeah as a kid I never had access to the internet. So it was either figure it out or your stuck. And you got rewarded and surprised by your reward.
Same reason I'm more invested in browsing and installing mods to games, rather than playing it.

Dunno. These aren't games I've played or even have, so I'm not actually "stuck" anywhere. Still, after watching maybe 5 minutes of gameplay, I feel like I got the same satisfaction as if I had already beaten the game. It's bizarre, but at least its good for the wallet
Go into ANY game that interests you as blind as possible until the first time it reaches it's end state (i.e. you beat it), THEN you can begin reading up on stuff or even considering mods. You will be way more informed as to what you need to get more fun out of the game (if only there was a way to...), you think about stuff for yourself, and you WILL find solutions. Games aren't rocket science, you've played enough of the damn things to already look in the right places most of the time, and YOU could be the cool guy on the internet coming up with a unique way to tackle some challenge.
If you want to play any game optimally from the start, you immediately downgrade it to a chore. Be a human, not a robot.
It wasn't until I got into VR that I started to feel the spark again that video games used to give me as a kid. It was like experiencing gaming for the first time all over again.

When I first tried VR it was the most amazing thing ever. But over time the amazement wore off and it became just another type of game. It's still fun, but the brain adapts to anything.

I was feeling this way all last year until my buddy got me into all the soulsborne game and Christ I haven’t been this motivated to beat a franchise in years , find a buddy and play through any of these games and you’ll have great time but just make sure someone knows the basics because the tutorials aren’t to knowledgeable in these games unless you read the notes

Amazingly, that's exactly what happened to me.
I don't have the heart for any other game besides soulsborne, I believe their different style (in an age where it seems that all "games are the same") attracts me and makes me want to continue with them.

In my opinion. The reason games aren't fun anymore (specifically multiplayer games). Is because everyone is or wants to be tryhards and rather focus on being best at the game instead of actually having fun and enjoying it.
My Opinion.
There's a huge surge of people like that thinking they're the next Esports athlete. Although trying hard is something we all do, it has seen a massive uptick on online games for sure.
MinMaxing culture in it self is the reason most people hate gaming and also most games being focused online and always needing more content to play (on same game)

@@StewartStewart. Exactly. Everyone's acting like COD and Gta are the only games that exist like there's shit loads of games out there. Ever since I stopped playing doo doo ass COD and Gta my gaming experience has gotten way better and more fun. I've made way more memories with games such as Devil May Cry 3 and 5, the entire Kingdom Hearts series as a whole, The Soulsborne games and wwway more. I barely remember any of the shit I did on COD and Gta
As someone who has loved games their entire life (now in my 50's) the best advice i can give is to not give in to addiction. Do the things you're supposed to do in life and treat the games as a reward (even if you binge a game for 2 weeks straight, that's fine, but make sure you get your real life shit done and step away for a while afterward). This keeps you anticipating and looking forward to the next game (or binge) without it becoming a mundane exercise.

Interesting! I remember playing the first Assassin's Creed when I was young. I remember replaying it over and over, and I was always excited to get back to play it.
A few months ago I revisited it, and after a couple hours... I just quit the game. It was so boring. The gameplay was the same, but my standards/neural pathways/dopamine levels/whatever have changed. Now I understand why.
I loved the first assassins creed because of its vibe but also because it was simple…focused. After AC2 they went off the rails and started releasing games every year, i kept up but they just kept getting rediculously bloated with gameplay. I played AC3 to revitalise my interest in the series but when i realised just how long the damn thing was and the release schedule and the “plot” i really don’t need to play assassins creed games from now till the end of time

@@91Vault I think that more gameplay was a good thing, partially at least. Actually, the story is what made me stop playing those. After AC3 they started to stray far from the initial ideas and the series morphed into something entirely different than what was originally planned. I get though what you're saying, the first releases really were more simple, and there was something appealing about it.

I’m going through this trouble to enjoy games the same right now. I just bought a switch but every time I think about a game, a thought about how completing a games missions, challenges, side quests, is actually meaningless in adult life. “I can turn into a ball in this game?!” Doesn’t mean anything to me anymore because I understand it’s not so cool because all it is is a developer programming a character in this game to turn into a ball. It’s not real life, they can do anything. It’s whatever.
I think it’s mostly adulting, responsibilities, lesser imagination, and the fact that we can just buy any game we want and it dilutes the value of each one we have.

@@savnac You're not alone, when I was younger the idea of not being able to buy any game I wanted from Gamestop, made each game I had feel that much more special. Now I can afford pretty much any one I want and it kind of lessens the value.
I still look forward to games and have some in mind I for sure want to play, but it just sucks that it feels like this affirms the idea our childhood is behind us now. I honestly wish I could go back to how games grabbed me when I was younger.
Complaining about video games not benefiting your adult life? You are pathetic. You should play video games for fun and that's all that matters. Not everything has to be productive to be good. A time enjoyed is not a wasted time. Besides, video games do wonders for mental health.
And if you really think they are not useful at all then you are wrong because video games have proven to improve the brain in various ways. You can also learn many valuable life lessons. That's why I stick to offline single-player games. Just me and the video games, nothing else.
I have a list of reasons I’ve noticed (mostly multiplayer):
1) toxic multiplayer lobbies (this one is debatable, sometimes it’s funny, other times it’s cringe and kinda disgusting)
2) cheating becoming more frequent
3) no real award or accomplishment for beating a game
4) game devs ignoring or bashing their core audience
5) being used as a platform instead of a way to tell interesting stories
6) more monetized scamminess
7) now you have to do one of those “user agreements” instead of just “I bought the game and it’s mine now, no need to agree to anything.”
8) games copying others
9) games doing the exact same concept as before but doing it worse
10) games releasing glitch, buggy messes and with bare bones content at launch instead of releasing a completed game
number 7 is pretty truthful, imagine paying $100 or some new release of some shitty call of duty which adds like a different gun and like some better graphics and then getting banned for their servers (bought from wish) making you fall through the map and then get fucking banned for "cheating" and then their appeals just shows you the middle finger and you cant play the game anymore

Like most games from the past was like seasons were you want to know what was the reason for the ending storie but now it is just competitive and playing and games that are only to do the same thing for no reason that tells no storie such as the HALO games from the xbox 360 days
Which is what makes Doom Eternal and id Software so refreshing. They successfully avoided all of these. They created and released an entirely unplanned game mode just by listening to their community AND and it was free. Wish more studios were like that.
I don't even play multiplayer & have felt similarly. Video games are starting to feel too much like work & less like an enjoyable pastime. I don't know of it's because I'm depressed or if it's the games themselves. I've finished all of 7 games so far for PS4 & still have another 10 I've started. Only one of the games I finished really feels like it stuck with me, & that was Batman: Arkham Knight. Odd for a series that I'd enjoyed up to then, but never really got to me that much. It's just that last one. I really wish there hadn't been such an anally exorbitant amount of DLC for it, though.

That's why I'm starting to transition to more single player games and even the multi-player games I play have some sort of questing and mission achieving elements to it. I've been playing the same multi-player game for 3 years and playing open world games where I can just chill and explore is such a breathe of fresh air
subnautica, don't look anything up (guides), I went in with practically no info and no access to internet for months and had a blast, spectacular exploration game.

Awesome advice dude. I've noticed that when times in my life are busy and I'm not able to game, when I get time and come back to gaming, I seem to enjoy it more than when I stepped away.

Very well explained video! This shifting dopamine baseline applies so much to our lives. Like I made drawing my main hobby and work over these last 2 years. My output went from like 2-3 pieces a year to north of 30 a year very quickly. Aside from not getting the same joy as before I noticed my motivation to draw get lesser as time goes on.
Since then I been taking a break from commissions, Changing mediums, going out more doing plein air painting they really are helping me find my motivation again. Appreciating what we do in a different way helps us rebalance the dopamine receptors while not fully abstaining from the it entirely.

Games hardly blow me away nowadays. There was such a huge boom in graphics and technology going from N64 to Gamecube to PS3/360, but now so many games just have that generic unreal engine 4 look. It used to feel like a "next generation" console or game would be a gigantic leap in what is possible, but now it just feels like you get a few extra particle effects and some higher resolution textures. There's been standardization of mechanics across all games, like every game needs to have multiplayer, a leveling system, microtransaction currencies, and very low difficulty so anyone can beat the game even if you're half asleep. Also, updates make you constantly feel like you aren't playing the "real" game, because it's still half finished. If you find anything strange, instead of being excited about your discovery, you wonder how long it will take the devs to patch it out. And it doesn't help that so many development companies are soul-crushing to work for. When playing a game you have to wonder "is this DLC part of the artist's vision, or is this a greedy decision made by the publisher?"

I agree with the "all the same" part, mostly, one of the reasons, I guess, is because I need a challenge when I play a game. Not too much of a "casual" gamer. On the other hand, to be honest, there's only so much we can create that is "revolutionary". Creativity does not grow on trees super fast and infinitely. Some concepts are shit, no matter what. Some concepts are cool and work, but for a limited time. And, some concepts are good enough that people want to play them repeatedly.

I feel like part of it also comes down to feeling guilty over the time wasted when playing games.
gaming these days feels like I'm wasting the time i should've been using working on things that could benefit me in the future, which made games less enjoyable over time. But i also found that whenever I would finish a big project or felt like I've done enough work for my goals for the day, games became way more enjoyable because i could just have fun and spend my time guilt free.
It's like back in the day when you'd come back from school and did your homework that was all you needed to do to feel like you finished your responsibilities for the day, so you could spend the rest of your time just gaming and having fun
Yeah I definitely feel the guilt when I binge play to finish a game esp if it takes two to four weeks or more to 100% :/ I don't have the time to give more than 2-3 days to a game so binge playing for longer than that takes from my life and makes me feel sick.
this exact scenario is why I do not complain when a campaign isn't 90 hours. When people say "campaing is only 6 hours!" that's actually a good thing in my eyes

I'm so busy between Work, School & a Relationship that I feel physical pain when I try to unwind with videogames.
It's really interesting how many people in the comments seem to be expressing some kind of guilt over gaming.
In my opinion, smaller dev company cares about the game and a large amount of focus is spent improving it, they inevitably sell and games turn into cookie cutter mobile games with extra monetization. I am curious if this video can help me with some kind of 'ignorance is bliss' mentality though, interesting so far.
I think seeking out unique, passion-filled games from smaller/indie studios is the way to go. You're only doing yourself a disservice by wasting your time on a mediocre game made only to please investors. There are plenty of amazing games out there, you just have to look for them.
This channel is so underrated, love your videos and it's obvious you put a lot of work into them.
As a 29 yr old who's been slowly losing interest in gaming over the last 5+ years like it's an inevitable divorce, this is the most therapeutic thing I've seen in a long time. I thought I would be so happy to finally return to my staples like Battlefield and Halo but after playing both I feel like I'm losing faith. I'll tell you something that killed it for me. The inability to play multiplayer without another console, another TV, another game, and another subscription. It infuriates me that I can't kill some zombies with my son in Back 4 Blood without blowing a whole weeks pay. The whole reason Left 4 Dead was so good, was because you could play with friends and family right in the living room without any extra nonsense. Why would they remove the selling point from the spiritual successor? I don't know. What this video explains can also be true for movies as well. I have a tradition every October to watch a Horror movie every night of the month. I was noticing that the movies I chose had lost some of the impact they once had. The realization that I can stream literally any movie kind of makes it less special. Years back, if I wanted to watch 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' I would have to search all over Blockbuster and video stores, and since it was an older movie, it would be rather hard to find. So when I finally find a copy on VHS, it feels like such a treat and becomes a sort of activity. Unfortunately it's the same way with music, and as the video points out, video games.
DUDE. YEAH. So lame I can't do split screen, especially with PC. So many times I've had friends over with a powerful rig and you still can't just split the screens.
I agree with you, every game should try to add splitscreen so friends and family that don't play a lot can still play and have fun. Atleast Smash bros and Mario party are still like that and its why they are some of my favorite games

There was a time where I thought I’d never enjoy video games again so I stopped playing them for a few months. I ended up going hanging out with friends and getting drunk all the time and it was a lot of fun… at first. Because I usually stayed at home playing video games all the time going out and socializing with other people became a new and exciting thing to do, however that didn’t last and I ended up not wanting to hang out with anyone anymore because I just didn’t find the enjoyment anymore.
I remember the day I started playing video games again. It was like revisiting an old friend, as pathetic as that sounds lol. The point is I now I realize exactly what was happening to me when I got bored of video games and when I got bored of socializing. I recommend balancing your day out so that way they aren’t filled with so many activities that give you dopamine without any work. It’s a terrible feeling to be depressed because ironically you’ve made yourself too happy. Because then you feel extra upset because you can’t think of a good reason to why you’re upset other than “nothing entertains me anymore” and that overwhelming feeling of dread kicks in hard. Just take a break and put some work into something else. Dopamine detox
That's a crucial lesson man. You need to work to earn the rewards, which oddly enough reinforce your work ethic. Dopamine builds habits and reinforces behavior so you need to tie it to something. years of me drinking also taught me that lesson in a much more severe way which is in part what led me to studying this topic. This video is just the tip of the iceberg explaining the biomechanisms that determine our life. for better or for worse. Anhedonia is death. But thankfully that can all be overwritten due to the brains neuroplasticity!!
Man I feel you. I am a hermit by nature. But since all this crap in the world has happened I cannot stand staying at home anymore. I just want to get out and go places and do things. Honestly I dread going home and sitting down being surrounded by 4 walls. This video was great.

Anything can turn into work when you do enough of it. Videogames even encourage that behaviour, "grinding" out rewards and achievements. The people who play for hundreds or thousands of hours of a game then leave a negative review may be a meme, but they did it mostly to themselves.
Honestly for me it’s because most of us have entered the “real world” and have too many responsibilities or are working so much. Your friends are never online and if you have time off you spend it resting or only have the time to spend a couple of hours. For example, I LOVE Fallout New Vegas but I don’t think I’ll ever again have the free time to play through the game in its entirety ever again and the best parts of games like call of duty or Minecraft was playing with your friends, who are never online anymore because they are also working around the clock.
Just turned 20 and this is so darn true! For example; I really want to stream, but I work 6 days a week and I am in a serious relationship. It makes it nearly impossible to find time to stream or play with my friends. That and school combined, plus the fact my friends are in college or university right now makes it much harder to play games with 'em.
I'm still in high-school and this is already starting to happen. It's not gonna get any better is it?

This is where sacrifice comes into play, you have to weigh up if your time is worth this or that. The worlds best know this well, they'll sacrifice the entirety of their young years, relationships, friendships, everything to pursue the passion they have. Always weigh things up, your heart will tell you what to do
You are doing a great job with these in depth gaming videos. I'm almost done with my game design degree and I am extremely terrified of the future of gaming honestly. Mostly because of what my instructors and fellow students think in terms of the industry. Get ready for more monetization guys, because I promise it’s not showing any signs of going anywhere anytime soon, unfortunately.
I make a habit to not play video games during the week, and only on the weekends. I put my attention to other things besides a game to balance everything out

I actually studied video game and design and I noticed that all of the industry was about profit, not about being stories or fun... I dropped out because not only was the course too expensive but I didn't want to kill my love for gaming....
I feel for you. I was making games since middleschool and enrolled into an art school to make games. Realizing the state of the industry disappointed me so hard I dropped out.
I still am plotting a videogame concept in my mind though and want to realize it someday as a hobbyist. :)

Yeah it was amazing for a couple hours until it just became a bunch of aimless running around, collecting the same stuff and fighting the same enemies. I don’t know what it is about Breath of the Wild but it was unable to hold my interest as well as Link to the Past did. Maybe it’s because in 1992 there weren’t a lot of JRPGs so the genre was fresh, whereas Breath of Wild released in a market saturated with 3D JRPGs.
I had a similar issue with BOTW until I played it on pc and tweaked a few settings to make it more fun imho

I think for me it was around the time developers stopped designing games based around what they thought was fun and cool and started designing around what a bunch of scientific studies say is fun.

You're right. Ever since Minecraft became the top selling game in the world, we started getting BILLIONS of survival/crafting/building games because of statistics. I love Minecraft don't get me wrong, and it was fun in the beginning with games like Subnautica, Stranded Deep, Green Hell, The Forest etc. but eventually it became boring and annoying, i don't wanna spend time chopping trees and digging, farming, grinding.. Repetitive little tasks that can drive you insane. That was never the main fun in Minecraft anyway, it was the complete experience.
Now i cannot stand survival/craft anymore, i stopped playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Metal Gear Solid 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider because i got tired of all that resource gathering, plant harvesting, fruit picking, herbs collecting shit.. Even though the games are not that grindy, just the idea of collecting shit around makes me tired.
Just place few items in the room and that's it, let me explore the game in peace without bunch of collectibles every centimeter of the map! It used to be special when you found an item in game, but now it's just ''Ah what's this shit over here, let me pick it up because i can't leave it there, maybe it's something good, but it's nothing good, it's just shit, it's a shitty little crafting resource and it's used to craft shitty 2 minute XP boosters or some shit, you need 3000 of those to craft 1 booster and you don't even use them so your inventory is full anyway, and it goes in circles.. I don't even look at the beautiful graphics anymore because i'm collecting items like fcking Pac Man eating oranges, i cannot stand it anymore!
Tbh this is why I like indie games. Some of them have really nice stories or concepts

As a tip. Taking a break can make you better at playing certain games. Your Neurons need time to rewire, so that those paths which are linked with "success" and "dopamin" keep growing, while other nasty habits can be forgotten.
This way I got decent with Rocket League. You can not grind up your brain by playing daily! You get crazy!

@@cattysplat I disagree on some level. I stopped playing CoD for about 3 years and stopped gaming for a year and came back to gaming last year and played Warzone. For a period of about 3 months it was bliss until the hedonic adaptation thing started happening and I moved onto another game. I can’t blame Activision or CoD, those people try really hard every year to keep players entertained but it’s impossible innovate faster than players’ reward system’s ability to adapt. Every major business now understands the concepts of time spent on their products (not just in gaming but all across entertainment) and how crucial it is to keep them engaged.
A big part of why people burn out is that most people have been playing the same game, or it's sequels, or it's main competitor in the same genre, for 10-15 years.
Like there are so many absolutely amazing indie games and games from smaller publishers that give such a wide variety of experiences. But those require you to actually take some time and google a bit, and you might not always enjoy the first game you try right away.
Would love to see more videos like this. Probably my inner psychology geek was enjoying this too much.
The lack of creativity is a huge piece.
I personally love mods and that’s given me a creative outlet to use within my game, specifically Fallout 4.
As someone who does lots of modding I agree that it changes things up and gives games a breath of fresh air.
Mods go a long way to extending a game. For some games, it's practically like playing a whole new game. Done with one specific set of mods? swap them out and the game is refreshed.
Exactly, the industry is lacking creativity and is afraid of taking risks, hence why indie games feel more fun to play nowdays.

I think it's a much simpler answer for the most part...quality and lack of it. Nobody is pushing limits anymore or bringing anything fresh to the industry. The golden age of gaming from the 90's through to the mid 2000's that gave us titles like GTA, RDR, Half-Life, Bioshock and Dead Space are long over to be replaced by the likes of Fortnite and cookie cutter COD releases. Smart single player campaigns and head to head co-op gaming have all but vanished with squad based online gaming taking over leaving anyone that prefers anything different to often just stay with their older consoles and games. I've owned every Playstation since the first and 5 is the only one I've had no real interest to run out and get even if i could.
Uh there were quite a lot of good single player games even into the late 2000s and early 2010s

I don’t fully disagree but to be fair the whole “obnoxious multiplayer gaming trend taking over “ has been around for a very long time, like when every game was trying to be COD or the push to find the next hot MMO, or the weird hybrid genre that started with destiny and ended with Anthem (lol…anthem) The most annoying thing is when you see a game that looks really cool but because they’ve smushed it with multiplayer you can’t fully tell if it’s going to be worth your time on its own (really want to try deathloop but) That said i think through the last 15+ publishers have learned time and time again there is a market for single player games (just look at the success of the outer worlds) but of course the genre doesn’t lend itself quite as well to micro transactions
For me gaming died when it started to be too realistic. It already reminded me the movies I watched or past experiences. With that ,none of the games felt like a fresh new experience.
I always searched new experiences to live in them.
I agree. I didn't realize it at the time but in my younger days when game graphics still left something to the imagination, that's where the magic happened. My mind filling in the gaps and being left to fantasize the unknown was what made games more magical for me.

nothing beats the natural reward of physically doing activities. since i started going out fishing, hiking and camping i have no real desire to play games at all. games are still fun but they were never truly rewarding. you hit a lot of valid points in this video though
I used to build models, but I ended up playing games more often.
Even with travel time no longer an issue, I have not been able to get myself to build models and have fun while doing so, in a while.
I buy junkyard-bound shitty old cars/motorcycles, restore 'em, race 'em, then sell 'em for a profit. Now I'm getting into carpentry and home improvement. There's always rewarding work to be done, and if they're just going to keep pushing out the same crap I'll just give Jegs, Milwaukee, and the other boys my money instead. When good stuff comes out though I become a greasy basement-dweller (looking at you Valheim)
This is why I still play old and also ancient Games :)
Over 20 years old and they still make a lot of fun, because they're made with heart and passion (unlike most modern Games, who only focus on PROFIT instead of Gameplay experience and Story).

It really depends on the games. I look into games that I know I can enjoy fully. I'm currently really loving Spiritfarer, Metroid Dread, ans a few VR games like Beat Saber and Phasmophobia. The latter especially with friends. What I did lose interest over my 20-30 years of gaming though are MMOs.
I have found that story driven games,like the campaigns of Halo or cod, and visual novels,bring me the most fun nowadays.
Learning about a deep and good story I found to be better then the rush of getting the most kills in a shooter.
that's a vibe for sure. I need a bonkers ass story for me to be entertained these days. I think I've always been like that, but newer game mechanics just don't really seem appealing anymore. I need a reason to play instead of just the gameplay. Dark souls always seemed like the best fusion of those two elements imo.

I lost most of my “fun” reasons because of circumstances similar in real life to me and depression. The massive amount of choices were a hope rather than a stagnation because I’m in a developing country. It started when I was 16(currently 20’s) and heard my childhood game closed down. I was sad because I’m autistic so these games were my way of communication. Some games also changed for surreal/me too movements which I never got to explore when I was younger makes me sad that I’m finding for something that’s dead even before I knew it’s name. I don’t mind repetitiveness like in your video as long I get to try these older video games because I only get to see others play making me envious of what I missed out. I hope some might get my two cents or view on your points.
I like this guy's humor. And unfortunately he is spot on, rarity, oversaturation, uninspired games, and our brains getting used to the stimulus... games are just not that fun anymore. And it is killing me a bit. I had imagined myself playing video games until 100, enjoying the worlds and the challenge. Now I have games in GOG, steam, Xbox Game pass, Humble bundle, and more that I have payed for and just dont have the time or energy to play. It sucks really...
Well but the answer is simple, just like he said, stop playing games for a while and then it will be fun again.
I will admit to not playing as much as I used to, as bit of me insists that I play 6 or more hours straight or not play at all.

I would often just go from game to game hoping that the next one would be fun, until finally giving up and doing something else.

Dude I'm 19 y/o turning 20 soon. This couldn't be more true games for me just haven't been hitting as hard in recent years and as time goes it just gets harder and harder to play certain games now. Like smash is a game play a lot but overtime it's just not fun anymore. And over the past few years I've began to wonder if we're ever gonna recapture that same feel of fun we had years ago, only time will tell.

TL:DR don't get good at games and you'll always have fun in them.
also, what was said in this video is nothing but facts. i was thinking about this the other day so this video was like perfect timing. but either way, even if you take a break from a game you put hours upon hours into, you'll still have the muscle memory you built up over the time. once you re-log into that game, your muscle memory will kick in and you'll still be able to play the game. it's like riding a bike. hypothetically, you haven't ridden a bike for 7 years. then one day, you hop on, and have no issues taking off and cruising. same with games. you may not remember instantly, but just walk around for 5-10 minutes in one map in a private session, and boom. everything comes back to you. once you hit a certain skill-point, it's no longer fun. it's just how the game is "meant to be played".
The thing with the chemical balance you explained was especially noticable in music production for me.. Like when I make a beat I get exited about banging low 808s that stimulate my brain. So I emphasice making the bass or 808 "fat" a lot. And when I menaged to make an 808 that makes me go "yes uwu" Im happy and tend to overuse it in the next couple of days when making new beats. But then it gets stale and just doesnt have that initial punch anymore.. Its still alsmost the same sound just changed to compliment the new project at hand but i just got used to it. it doesnt exite me anymore. But when I do something else for some time or just not tproduce any music for some days and then produce some other music with other sounds that deviates from what I did before I can get that exitement back for these types of sound. Because if I dont get that pause I just make the bass louder and more distorted until there is apoint where its just not soundiong good anymore because I chase that tingeling again not noticing that I already achieved the exact effect I want the beat to have only that I got so used to it that it doesnt feel enough to me anymore.. Thats why I always have phases of making Trap Beats and then other EDM type stuff with other fundamental sound principals so I never get tired of one or the other too much and it keeps on being stimulating.
I mean sure u always can add to something like.. Distortion on an 808 but at some point u might just ruin the sound. and If u notice u tend to overdo something that worked for you before on some certain sounds it might be a sign u should pause doing that speccific thing and try making something else for a little while so you can come back with a refreshed understanding and a more balanced or true perception of that thing.
OR just know that you might have a altered/weighted perception of something.
Since when I listen to a beat I made some weeks ago where I know it felt lacking to me then, it all of a sudden sounds really huge and fat all of a sudden. Because my brain adjusted to not being overstimulated by my always chasing the bigger sound..
Dont get frustrated just change ur perspective. Allow your brain to always experience something different so everything can stay fresh'ish
Same with listening to the same songs over and over and over again. If you do that but not TOO much the song will be a banger if you havent listened to it for some time.. If you do it TOO MUCH it WILL become boring and it ruins it for you.

Recently I am overwhelemed by the amount of games I want to play. I did felt like this and this video gave quite a good explanation for it. You combined humor so well that you made me like you from just one video. You got yourself a subscribe!
Getting into Vr has helped me refresh my love for gaming. Playing VRC has appealed to my social side and has given me a nice break from traditional gaming. A few weeks back I've decided to play more games on my PC and I've just been enjoying the time with them more and just letting myself more easily get immersed than before.
One thing that you should've mentioned would be intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. In regards of video games, intrinsic motivation is when players find it enjoyable to do something because it's personally rewarding. This mainly happens when players come across a new novelty and freedom. It's intrinsic motivation that carries games like skyrim and minecraft. Extrinsic motivation is more common in games, and it's when the game rewards you for doing something, and that's why it's enjoyable.
Its like what the internet did to the music industry. We used to have to LEARN to like what it was about a band that they got to release an album.. because we paid 15$ for an album, so you explored it more, you FOUND out what was cool about it.
And now if you aren't engaged in the first 5 seconds you look for something else.
totally know that feeling, I used to buy cds and BOY did you try to enjoy it, because at that point you're committed.
THIS 100%! When I younger I use to follow my local Hardcore/Punk scene and had to go to specialty record stores to find underground bands, there use to be this child-like wonder when discovering a new band and opening up the record sleeve to see photos, lyrics sheets, artwork, and other items that immerses you to the music.
This seems to be true of the internet in general. There's a million of anything and everything you can think of. Maybe that's part of why everything seems to suck nowadays. There's too much, it seems.

For me it's the fact that most multiplayer games are now "pay for play" and it takes the fun out of grinding which most older players are used to. As much as I enjoy a good single player it's more satisfying playing and beating a human besides a bot

As for the topic. I'm still very much into gaming, but I have no interest in anything beyond the Wii/PS3/360 era. I like watching videos about current gen gaming. Digital Foundry covering the Unreal Matrix Demo, for example. Holy crap, that game looks fantastic - technically - however, there is nothing there that makes me want to play it.
Occasionally a game will come out and I think "Ah if I had that console I would play that", but the urge is no longer there the same way as when I was younger. To be honest, I don't expect it to be. But I have friends who have the newest consoles, playing these new titles and all they do is complain and ask where's the best place to get N64 emulators. After spending, what, £600 on a console and 3-4 games?
Think I'm rambling here haha but anyway the general feeling I get from current gen is 'graphics = sales', sales > a great gaming experience.

Yes I’ve come to the same conclusion recently where Nintendo are ironically the only people releasing new things, but they do this by passing the same torch from installment to installment while searching further and further for originality. People might think they’ve played Zelda a million times but the breath of the wild link is a new person who’s in an entirely new experience that only reflects what you fondly remember. Apparently Metroid dread did the same thing recently. Meanwhile I’ll punch myself in the face 6 times if a AAA title can be produced that’s not another battle royale or FPS military shooter.

Fell out of love with gaming in my late 20s after having hit them hard since the age of 5, lmao. I just think it was a change in mindset for me. Very strange, though, like a switch being flipped. I occasionally read up on the current state of the industry, but I haven't touched a game controller for a very long time.

I love how you mentioned outer wilds in there. I recently started playing after a friend urged me to and it's so incredibly rewarding in the best way. You're fully autonomous, so you can do what you want, and with the only thing you gain being knowledge of the solar system, which is rewarding both because it exposes more lore and also more mastery of the system. It's fully paced by the player, and just the best level of difficulty design. Thanks for making this video

Got this video recommended, started watching and I thought "oh nice, another cool analysis channel" and instinctively thought you had like 500k subs, I thought that because your video production and editing is insane man. The effort you put into this video shines through.

Forza 4 and 5 really brought back some fun in video gaming for me. I really thought when I was in my 20’s video gaming would be something I’d love until I die. Now at 54, I’ve been bored but these games have brought back some of the enjoyment I had when I was a kid.

fantastic vid. ended to abruptly. was expecting a little more on the "cure" but still very informative. but it makes perfect sense. When I was younger, only had access to one game (betelguse very boring and repetitive) these days many many pc and console games - can get any one I want. now I dont know what to play, and even ones I like, cant stick long to it.
