    I actually worked for a gaming chair company so these were our office chairs, (cuz of course they were) and that experience was rough. I didn't realize how harsh it was sitting in these chairs because I knew nothing about gaming chairs at the time. I convinced myself that the chair was great quality and that my back must have been the problem. Fast forward a year, I'm working somewhere else completely, using normal office chairs with 0 back problems.... Gaming chairs are pretty ass...

      Super interesting. Can I ask what company? And yeah the back thing kills me as someone who spends their days editing I needed to throw like 250 bucks at a chair, ended up with a fantastic mesh back supporting chair that has saved my lumbar. Thanks for the info, Dylan.

      My experience is the exact opposite. Comfortable executive chairs are very expensive (~$300+) - which is more than most "gaming" chairs. Also, regular office stools are not designed with any kind of ergonomics in mind, leaving you with a lot of pain all over the body. I know, I have one in my cube at work. Whereas my home chair (just happens to look "gamey") is very comfortable, properly reclines and I fell asleep in it in multiple occasions. Wouldn't be able to do that in the office chair.

      Yeah I gotta say, for the price I think you can get a better gaming chair. For example I paid maybe 200$ and got a solid chair that can recline and has back support if I need it. I still have my old one in the basement for an office chair but the ability to recline is heavenly for my senile back lol.

They made more than they could sell to car enthusiasts because no one wanted to remove these features from their cars. These cheap manufacturers started bolting castor tripods on to their unsellable car seats after they saw Recaro do it for massive profits to a high end executive market.

I am constantly encouraging people to sit in the other chairs and feel the difference. Yeah, this craze of low-quality-presented-as-high-quality "gaming" chairs is horrible. Used a Respawn 110 for almost a year, and it SUCKED. My ass was in constant pain after just an hour of sitting. And the lumbar pillow was a joke. Always got jammed in the crevice between the back and seat of the chair. Didn't have a spring-loaded rocking system, armrests were connected to the back so they only moved when you reclined the chair's back part. It was a stiff, mostly plastic mess. AND it was already creaky out of the box. By the time I got rid of it, it was LOUD when it creaked.
    HOWEVER, I wouldn't say all gaming-style chairs are bad. I recently replaced it with an Anda Seat Kaiser 2, and my god, this seat is everything I wanted in a gaming chair. Memory foam pillows, a LARGE lumbar pillow that covers more area of the back of the chair, spring-loaded rocking, very thick and soft cushioning, adjustable armrests and an easily accessible lever system, and it DOESN'T CREAK AT ALL. Out of any racer-style chair, this is the only one I've ever been comfy for literally hours in. It was pricey, but worth it for me.
    But yeah 9 times out of 10 these "gaming chairs" are scams, made with the cheapest and least durable materials you can find. There are a few good ones, but if you're on a serious budget, get a regular office chair. They are usually infinitely better.

    • @xiChann

      Exactly, I feel like some points he gives only applies to "gaming" chairs under 150-200(still overpriced) but those normally have no support, padding, or adjustability. My gaming chair for 250$ has built in Bluetooth speakers, a decent massager, tilt and height adjustment, rgb, and good lumbar support.

    *The problem we have today are NOT the gaming chairs themselves. My gaming chair doesn't have the stupid excuse of literal rubber pegs for 'arm rests' and are actually the best ones I've ever had. I always put my legs up with my leg rest while gaming in which office chairs don't readily have yet, and if they do, usually made of mesh. The problem we have is the fact that the flagship game chairs that cost $400-$500 with NO comfort, NO style, NO lumbar support and NOT even real arm rests show up with your first search on ANY search engine. We have streamers and youtubers that get paid crazy amounts of money to make sure they sponsor them to not stop that any time soon. They make awesome gaming chairs around $100-$200 but so lost in searching for them that most people don't even know they exist. They also make Gaming Recliners that are electric and with cup and controller holders, also with some of the best arm rests and back/lumbar support. It's not all gaming chairs in general. • @MrVvulf
    @MrVvulf Před 3 lety +32

    I used to work for an office furniture specialty company (main brand was Steelcase). Even those chairs are rarely what a gamer really needs.
    What you want is a chair that reclines enough to almost put you in the same position you'd get in your grandfather's recliner (feet up and supported and all). That's the position that's best for your back if you'll be sitting for a long time.
    My personal setup is a chair I got off Amazon with a nice high back to give neck support if I want it, and reclines far enough to make it comfortable to prop my legs up on the stool I put under the kitchen table I use as a desk. Why a table instead of a desk? Because it allows me to push my monitor far enough away that I don't get eye strain, and gives way more surface area than a conventional desk.

    I've struggled with chair comfort for a very long time. I've never found a chair that I can just use for hours and hours and hours. This was major motivation for my trying a gaming chair -- it's a major change in chair style and I expected it to be a major increase in chair quality too.
    I've owned two gaming chairs. The first was a gift from family -- I'd mentioned wanting a chair, and I almost certainly used the phrase "gaming chair" since, after all, that'd be most of what I used a chair for. I told them I wanted time to look into options, but they got impatient and just bought *a* "gaming chair", somewhere in the 100 to 200 USD range. My experience with it very strongly aligned with what you've described in this video. It's build quality was honestly lesser than most of the traditional chairs I've used.
    The second is a SecretLab chair, which I am still using. The actual build quality is much better, and it has a meaningful warranty (5 years), but I very much feel the design issues that come with the "gaming chair" style. The bucket seat is adequately comfortable when I am sitting in the racecar-driver position, but as soon as I try to sit in it in any other way, it becomes horrible. I'm just not someone who can stay in one position for very long. It's supposed to have the lumbar support that you mention gaming chairs often lacking, but as with every lumbar support system I have used, I have not managed to find a configuration more comfortable than "no support". I will probably ride out its usable life, but I don't expect to be interested in "gaming" chairs when it's time to buy the next chair.
    A very strange issue with both chairs: I simply could not find a combination of position and configuration for which using a keyboard was remotely comfortable. It's giving me an existential crisis about how normal chair work -- I don't believe I've ever had this experience with a normal chair.

    I went through 2 _"Gaming Chairs"_ before finally doing exactly what you said. I went to Staples and got a chair that was infinitely more comfortable, actually rocked back and forth correctly, and has arms sturdy enough for me to do dips on them. I don't have to constantly stretch my back and it doesn't take 10 steps of slow walking to get slight hip pain to go away after sitting in it for a few hours. My ass also doesn't go numb besides my tailbone which would scream at me after 25 minutes because the padding on $250 game chairs is no better than the padding on $99 gaming chairs, or $35 waiting room chairs. I was literally stunned at the lack of quality. Lol, "Leg rests"? Yeah, those worked great, extending and then flipping into position that make you feel like you are going to tip over the minute you try to use it. Or the adjustable seat which was a lever you had to lift up, then manually set the back to where you want it to be, lock it back in by pushing the lever down, at which point you can sit again. The plastic armrests that felt like they were going to snap off every time I put any weight on them; ei using my arms to help push myself out of the chair because my legs and back were dead from sitting in the fricken thing so long... Ugh.
    I could see an actual car seat on a sturdy rockable base being comfortable to game in, but with no _"Power"_ options involved, we are still taking about a chair that probably has a $250 manufacturing cost and weighs 35lbs. That would be a cool gaming chair, but even at the $400+ price point you are not going to get that in a "Gaming Chair" unless you build it yourself because they are basically selling you $50 chairs at various markups with the only difference being RGB and very, very slightly more padding. Fine for 10-15 year-olds, but *PITIFUL* for adults. Heh, I just leaned back in the office chair I ended up buying and guess what I felt? Real lumbar support without some goofy pillow basically just pushing my lower back out way to far concentrated on my spinal cord along with 3"'s on both sides. Yeah, thats fantastic for your back. They should put the extra padding from the pillows in the darn chairs, while widening them so you get the "Bucket" look without actually being trapped.

    Ergonomics and anthropometrics have been studied for a long time. We have also been sitting at office jobs for a long time. There are quite a few office chairs (ex. Herman Miller Aeron chair, Steelcase, HAG) that have been out for decades that were produced by engineers and industrial designers with tons of experience in the field. These chairs are also not ideal for gaming, but I can guarantee they are better than these gaming chairs in question. A colorful and aggressive looking, bucketed racecar seat doesn't equate to office or gaming comfort, it equates to, well, racing in a car. Also, do not expect them to be cheap. R&D, design, high end materials and manufacturing techniques cost a lot of money regardless of where its made.
    The issue here and in most cases is consumer ignorance, giving marketing vampires an easy time shelling flashy colors and B.S buzzwords. Do your own research people!

    I'm actually pretty happy with the SecretLabs chair (the Titan, not the smaller one). I got a fabric one, and it's a good middle-ground between gamer and office chair in that it has (adjustable!) lumbar support, the bucket shape is very slight (meaning you can stretch your shoulders and actually position your legs in different ways), it's very adjustable, and while the seat is firm, it's still comfortable. Still not as good as the office chair I have, but that chair was the same price used as the Titan was new.
    Those bucket-style racing chairs are absolute GARBAGE, though, including the small SecretLabs (the Omega, I think)? I sat in a generic one at an office store, and I couldn't believe how uncomfortable it was. No idea how people sit in those for long periods of the day; I don't think I could do it even if I was sponsored.

    I have a gaming chair with extending footrest and it gets used only when I want to deeply recline or use my steering wheel for the immersion. Controller games are great for it. When it's time to use the mouse and keyboard, the office chair with sawed-off-snub-nose armrests comes out. I also took an angle grinder to the bit that holds the armrests to the bottom of the seat and lets you adjust their wideness so that I can slide them out and off the chair without fully removing the adjustment knob when it's guitar time.

    A prosumer office chair will beat a gaming chair. I've sat on 1200-dollar ergonomic chairs and they are a beast when it comes to comfort and support. My ideal chair would be a relaxed fit high back leather or high-grade vinyl chair that is both very firm with 70 IFD foam and super comfortable where I can easily fall asleep on it.

    I’m in charge of routing all the non-conveyable (a fancy word for big packages) packages at an Amazon Sort Center. Dozens of gaming chairs come through the facility every single night and I’ve never understood the point of them. They look just like office chairs, the price is just marked up. It’s always baffled me. I finally got curious and decided to look into them and I ended up here. I’m still just as puzzled as I was before but it was an entertaining video nonetheless.

      @@ManleyReviews That must be what it is. I’m not big on watching other people have fun playing video games, but if you do go on twitch 90%+ of the people there have some kind of gaming chair whether they’re sponsored by them or not. If someone watches a lot of gaming streams they’re being constantly advertised to by those companies whether they realize it or not. So when they need a new computer chair, buying one specifically for gaming probably crosses their minds at some point.
      I’ve never been a PC gamer so the idea of buying a chair specifically for gaming is such a foreign idea to me. I got my computer chair off the curb one morning before my neighborhood’s trash got picked up and it’s comfortable enough. I may use it for like 5-10 minutes a day when I check my email and stuff. If I was routinely playing games on PC I guess I’d be more concerned about the ergonomics and other features of a chair but it’s just never been an issue for me.

    • @ManleyReviews
      @ManleyReviews  Před 2 lety +2

      it's that idea of just having fun buying things. As a PC gamer, there's a lot of fun in just getting new gear. Regardless of the actual utility of it. It can be fun shopping for those new mice, headphones etc. And when you play a lot of FPS you do start to see things like
      "man, if only my table was bigger, or my chair was more stiff, or my mouspad was smoother etc etc" those thoughts drive tf out of sales. At least with my own perspective.

    I recently bought a new chair to replace my old office chair (which was very comfy just like 6 years old). One of my top priorities was a mesh back and it was the best decision! It offers a bit of bounce so not stiff and most importantly it doesn't get hot to sit in. Also proper adjustability is important to getting things like back support right or chair tilt.
    AND office chairs are generally cheaper with better features than gaming chairs.

    I almost bought a gaming chair last year but my eyes bulged when I saw the price which was around Php 4600 or $ 90 ( this price is considered ridiculous for a Filipino). So I did some research about chairs and went down the rabbit hole for a while and I had a realization that it's best to buy an office chair and considering that my room has a mantled, old wooden floor, it's best if I just bought a chair without wheels because it can easily rip off the cheap, plastic mantle. Now, I have a Php 2300 or $ 45 office chair that has both lumbar and neck support that are so comfortable, I sometimes doze off in it despite sitting in it for more than 8 hours (with some bathroom breaks).
