  • Stray isn't all the meets they eye. By truthfully examining its gameplay, explaining the story, and honestly reviewing its ending, Stray isn't the cute cate game that was advertised.. For better and for worse. Is stray good? Is Stray bad? Here's the answer.
    I want to love this game, but it ends up being a novelty instead of a classic. too many reviews are getting mousey about what's holding it back from being a true masterpiece. pyrolive

    I've been yelled at over the internet for pointing out this exact same thing. Stray is not a good game. Yes you play as a cat, and yes that's neat, but below that it's really just not a good game. It has no exploration, no actual puzzles, no actual gameplay. You're just a cat, and you press the button to cat.

It's fine if you don't like it, but until you watch in agony as someone who is a computer science major with honors and has done special education with NASA spend three hours figuring out that they have to crawl under a barrier to proceed because of everything around them and everything they can interact with, you can't say there's no exploration, no actual puzzles, no actual gameplay.

    I had the opposite reaction to the purple light weapon thing breaking, that "combat" mechanic was the most repetitive and brain numbing part of the game, the Zurks were much better when you had to puzzle an escape from them, which only happened on the segment to put the radio thing on top of that tower. Everywhere else was "combat" revolving around popping eggs and walking backwards as they pop, and the poor chase sequences where all you did was hold the sprint button and tilted the left stick forward, rarely jumping. Another point to add about the restricted movement: jumping completely halted your momentum as you had to aim to the platform and press X, both done with the right thumb. The devs probably put more jumps on the chase sequences but they played it and thought they sucked ass because jumping sucks ass, so the chase sequences ended up almost jump free. About the movement, I think the moment you held the sprint button the cat turns into a horse, low acceleration, no sharp turns and no jumps really felt like a horse in a game with riding. For a cat game the movement doesn't feel like one, except for the game preventing you from falling or missing a jump clumsily. I don't know about the rest of you, but I had tons of bugs. Broken NPCs, stuff clipping through walls/floor, wonky physics, one game crash... I liked the game, but I guess I expected way more from the reception it got.

      You don't have to stop to jump, the cat autojumps of you hold X/A.
      I was pleasantly surprised by how well the game could predict where I wanted to jump, most games that do that end up being a mess to navigate. Though I do agree that combat was basic (then again it's really just a one level gimmick so I guess it was ok) and that chases could've been much better implemented. I also felt like running speed was too slow, I guess they found it was too difficult to control otherwise.
      Personally, not having read anything about it prior to playing it and buying it just for the premise of "be a cat" in a cyberpunk/post apocalyptic setting, I thought it was competently made and a fun 6 hours for 20 bucks. Now, if reviews hyped it too much, I'd fault the reviews, not the game.

    Great video as usual! But I do wanna say that even though I loved Stray it definitely does have some faults, the gameplay is very simplistic since all you do for most of it is solve environmental puzzles and talk to NPCs to progress, you only being able to jump to certain areas that are marked for you, it being almost painfully easy since the only sections where you can actually die are the chase sequences which are very easy to get through, as well as its puzzles not being very challenging, I still loved it regardless because of it's narrative and general comfortableness that it has. I'm generally of the belief that a game should be judged based upon it's qualities and compared to how much its worth (i.e. If a game is priced at 60 to 70 dollars, then I'm going to judge it as a $60-$70 game and whether it's worth that price) and for me personally I think Stray gives good value with what it has for it being a $30 experience. I think it's similar to what you said in your gaming masterpiece video, even though Stray does have some faults, what it does well (Storytelling, world design, etc.) make it so good. Regardless though this was still a great watch!
    Edit: Also I forgot to mention that I think part of why Stray got so popular was likely a similar reason to why Elden Ring did so good as well. To many people (Myself included) Stray felt like a breath of fresh air similar to ER in that it was a game with a unique concept/take on a particular genre, was pretty well polished on release compared to games like Battlefield 2042 or Saints Row as a more recent example, and that felt worth the price that it was charged at for most people

That is my favorite kind of atmosphere. I also like how they'll often have shop/town hub music as something that's diegetic rather than non-diegetic. It's just a shame that's all it has going for it. The most insulting thing about stray I think is that you don't get a secret alternate ending for getting all of the scientist robot's memories I hear, which seems like a basic ass replay value add that they just kinda... skipped over. I haven't played this game, but I did watch my brother play it for about.... 20 minutes, and it was quite clear to me in that small amount of time, some of the problems with it. Like, I noticed practically RIGHT AWAY that this cat can only jump up on to things in pre determined spots, and that he couldn't do any of the more cat-like things unless he just happened to be JUST IN THE RIGHT SPOT FOR IT. It was a really pretty game (he was playing on PS4), but it just didn't look that *interesting* to me. I remember one part in particular where there was something about a robot who was annoyed that he kept having to clean up paint, and his door was closed. As soon as my brother read that note on his door or whatever it was, I said out loud kind of to myself "I see, so you're gonna have to find some way to spill paint so he'll open the door to come clean it up and you can go inside while the door is open" and that's EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED 10 minutes later. I think this game could have been a little longer, allowed the story to be fleshed out more naturally and give some character to some of the characters. I wanted more of the bacteria things though. They seemed like such a crucial part of the game. Only to be forgotten.

    I played this game for about or over 20 hours. Iam for sure biase for sure. The levels, the atmosphere, I dig that. The control is restricting, its like realizing link cant jump after playing sm64. In Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask you cant jump, you have to walk to a certain spot to jump of a ledge. It feels a bit like that, but actually a bit better. When I speedrun Stray I realized, that constantly pressing jump is kinda boring. You almost do nothing else. Only if you explore the world and take time its not that abvious. It more blends in.
    Also if you try to play really fast, the game gets buggy. When I sprint, activate a door and went into a barrel the drone disappeared and never came back. Sometimes jumps dont get recognized. Its not rewarding, because their is no consequence and its not at any moment difficult. I like games with difficult controls like for example Quake 3 Defrag. But Quake 3 Defrag isnt that popular for a reason. If a game has difficult movement, its frustrating and an avergae person dont like frustration that much. Comparing very hard controls and Stray is extreme. But you have to hit the sweet spot, in the middle. In many games you cant concentrate on the scenery, in Stray you can, because you are not occupied to be careful. I dont say Stray is perfect. Not a single game is perfect, besides sm64. But Stray a novelty and stands out. For me its a very fluent little point and click like adventure.

      Some people just want to explore the world for five hours. Nothing wrong with that. So much people acting superior just for having a different opinion.

    never picked up the game, it was always off-putting that all people could say was "cute cat" and "cyberpunk".

    Yo is it finally cool to say the game is extremely shallow? I feared for my life whenever I'd so much as hint that cat game isn't a 10/10 just because it has a cat in it

  • @nachgeben
    @nachgeben Před rokem +4

    I thought it was clear the plague hit after they entered the shelter, though. The Zorks too. I also never felt hindered by the way the game played. It's more RPG than anything else, and cats don't randomly jump in the air. They don't usually jump where they're unsure, but can fail jumps, which is possible in the game. There's also the insinuation that all the robots were once human. There's the fact that this is Walled City 99. Where's 1-98? We're also given the information that in the lower levels--if we're to believe the Companions are just AI--that they were so loved and respected by humans, they live in their image. Meanwhile, the upper Companions are still just... robots. Implying either the control room elites left, died without uploading their consciousnesses, or left to the lower levels.
    For the record, I prefer the theory that the lower level Companions are AI living in the image of the humans that created them and loved them so greatly.
    Unfortunately, the Companions never bothered to learn about that hivemind because they're afraid and too slow to travel through, investigating. B-12 never knew about the hivemind since he was uploaded early on, before it spread so severely. Little Outsider (yes, that's the name I stick with for kitty) is a cat of probably 7,000,000 years of mental evolution, but still doesn't give a shit about that. Friends and family is all Little Outsider wants.
    There's so much, including side quests. Could there've been more? Absolutely. But I think you're definitely suffering from 'pro gamer syndrome' here. The only failing imo is that they made the mistake of not showing Little Outsider reuniting with his family.
    Still a good video though, you aired your grievances well even if I disagree lmao
    EDIT: For those who don't get the 7 million year thing, there is a piece you can find that states the city has been operating for over 2,500,000,000 days.

    first stage of the game you have to run away from the enemies, then second stage you can kill them with the uv lamp Great, after that you lose it and have to run again, then the thirdstage you have to hide, they had to do it like this in this order to be just, and honestly im grateful for it and
    i still think that stray is a great game for getting into gaming because its simple,

    • @chucklesdeclown8819
      @chucklesdeclown8819 Před rokem

      but isnt it too simple at that point, i wouldn't show that to a beginner gamer tbh, i think what lies in the multiverse would be a good beginning game, decent story, interesting concept, pretty good puzzles to figure out and its relatively simple, its just the movement buttons and the button to change dimensions, i think something so meh wouldn't be a good first impression.

  • @sonicadv27

    I liked Stray's simplistic nature. The only thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was how the cat was turned into an errand boy that could function as a intelligent human being. But that's to be expected from this sort of game and i can suspend my disbelief to a certain point.
    The "chores" criticism is one i find harder to agree with, because you can level that one at basically any modern videogame, as are your gripes with the story. I for one thought the story was gripping enough because it was wrapped in a level of mystery from start to finish, like a B-movie the meaning of which you have to figure out for yourself. The lore doesn't really matter, the outside world doesn't really matter, it was the cat's journey in those few hours, when he got to meet weird characters and a whole world it was unaware of, that really counts. The fact that it was a really polished game helped it too.
    It was easily one of the best games of the year, totally deserved the GOTY nomination in my opinion. Of course a lot of people just liked it for the cat, and it is a selling point, but i got something else out of it beyond the cuteness factor. I got to immerse myself in a world for a few hours and had an experience that will stay with me longer than a lot of other games with 60 hours worth of, as you put it, "chores".

    huh. i always thought something was off with this game, especially steam reviews and game journos only mention "its a cool cat game. cats are cool. dedicated meow button is cute. cyberpunk aesthetics are cool. 10/10 goty" at best, but no gameplay elements. you know, the most important thing of a game?

    Ah, yes - the "puzzle" where you just look around and then they tell you the answer, rather than actually analyzing the situation and going "Oh, that's what I do!"
