Loving the way Souness will return to finish his point, despite an avalanche of bafflegab from Jordan. Great entertainment.
Bafflegab. I like it.
Jordan couldnt get a word in, souness is out of his depth, Jordan when it comes to football is on another level to these ex player/s / managers. Read simons book, May change your mind about him.
@@AlexSmith-zh2vq I see what's in front of me, and what I just saw was Souness carrying himself quite well in response to Simon, book or no.
@@AlexSmith-zh2vq You should try listening properly to the sequences of dialogue.Jordan was the one out of his depth here, not because he lacks intellect, he has plenty of that. Was because he was being impulsive, due to his predisposition to defend businessmen, at the expense of "the possibility" that people in the football game might understand something, about recruitment.
He was then forced into a couple of concessions here because he realised he had the mistakenly assumed, what Graham was saying, instead of listing to the detail. Have to admit, you can't blame Jordan sometimes for doing this, because of some of the mental Midget, the has had to deal with on the show. I have more respect for Graham after this.I feel that sometimes when he's commenting, he let's his bias for Liverpool. get in the way, especially when she's talking about Manchester United. But here, because he's talking about the game in general being more reasonable and balanced.
Jordan was actually trying to say that owners don't get involved in the footballing decisions here, which I'm surprised that in for, because that's pretty stupid, as we can see that this is entirely the difference between well-run and not very well-run clubs in the Premier league.Graeme's point about Chelsea, and the guys coming in thinking it was more simple than it is, only to realise later that they've made some ludicrous decisions, is the point well made, especially because they couldn't be more careful and kept some backroom staff
Souness did brilliant here. As a spurs fan. This is probably the first time I’ve totally agreed with him.
You took the words right out of my mouth (as the song goes).
Not a lover of Souness but I agree. It was a good listen.
Are you serious? Souness talking complete nonsense and is following the narrative set by the papers. Clubs have scouts, recruitment depts etc. The owners are not picking players
@@fonejacker0 your talking nonsense every thing he said was spot on and I don't agree with souness much at all but what he said there was spot on with pochetinno in charge u literally saw that can u not. remember him being so frustrated saying that they should change his title role to coach and not manager
@@fonejacker0 United are the very best example of this. Ed Woodward had an awful lot of say as the footballing director type, to think they don't have a say is madness. Woodward had too much control because both David Gill and fergie left at the same time and he had more say than every manager that came there, Moyes was a walk over, van gaal wasn't respected, and mourinho wasn't backed in a couple of windows.

Damn it’s tremendous to have Souness join talkSPORT. A refreshing change from having to endure the insufferable gibbons that normally parade the show. (Sinclair, Keown, Agbonlahor)
I think Sinclair is good, more simple approach, but much more realistic than Keown. Agbonlahor is just not smart or well-spoken at all, seems to lack any sort of knowledge, let alone about football.

I usually hate what Souness comes out with but he is spot on here. Levy 100% made too many of the football decisions at the club. But it's not actually Conte which has changed that, its Paratici. Spurs did not have a DoF before that.
We had Franco baldini and he blew the bale money, probably why levy was reluctant to trust anyone else
Mate... Arnesen and Comolli springs to mind. Levy was always a fan of having DOF. It was Redknapp and Poch who didn't like them.
@@jontan6434 I'm not sure what this guy is on about we've had DOF's
@@alexbriantab I didn't mean ever in our history. If you look at the time Levy has been chairman we have rarely had a proper Sporting Director. Maybe Balbini, but he wasn't in the role that Paratici is in now. Or would you call Steve Hitchen a DoF? In any case, in undeniable that the chairman has made more of the "football decisions" in his time that he probably should have. Levy is a fantastic businessman, he is not a proven football person

Souness is like a breath of fresh air to this program. I have always found him rather dour to listen to but he's definitely capable of holding his own and he talks a lot of sense...
Levy is a great owner In terms of business. He has run the business side of Spurs very very well. He isn't a great owner when it comes to transfers and strengthening the squad however. But overall The reason Spurs are now in and around the Top 4 is in large part due to Levy's running of the football club
He has (maybe surprisingly) put a lot of trust in Conte and given the manager most of what he wants. We see the results already on the pitch.
@@davidcopson5800 When Levy and Joe Lewis brought Spurs they were a mid-table club. Within a few years the club had slowly increased in stature and slowly became a Financial and sustainable club. The appointment of Harry Redknapp finally got Spurs their first taste of Champions League football and ever since then Spurs have been consistently in around those European places. Slowly but surely the squad was developed over time and Money was consistently reinvested into other areas of the club to ensure it had little to no debt and that it is sustainable and profitable for many years to come. Now Spurs have been able to pay for a new stadium, Spend a little bit more in the market and still be consistently competing for European Football. Fans are very opinionated. They want their club to succeed on the pitch but don't necessary understand what it takes to succeed off it. Levy gets a lot of hate but there's no denying without him. Spurs might still be a mid-table side
The elephant in the room is Paratici, nobodys metioned him so far but I think the only reason Conte came to Spurs is him.
@@ramrodder1597 defo wouldn’t have got conte without don Fabio!
Yeah he is so great at business that he overvalued the naming rights of the stadium
Graeme Souness is wonderfully informed on what matters in football and what matters to the fans - I love his appreciation of the game.
I personally think that when Levy was negotiating with Conte, he had a very weak negotiating hand. Spurs were 9th, playing appallingly, headed entirely down the drain. Levy wanted Conte in the summer, but Conte said he was too raw from his Inter divorce. So when Conte negotiated for real, he could demand, and get, what he required to be prepared to come to Spurs. He didn't need Spurs, Spurs needed him. He came because he could see potential, because he wanted to work with Son and Kane, the best strike force in the EPL. But he was able to lay down the ground rules of: 'if xxxxx doesn't happen, I'm not coming.' AND he was prepared to walk out in the summer if Levy went back on his word. Conte is giving Levy tough love and it seems to be working....but it's only working because he's delivering results on the pitch. Without that, he would be out the door.....Levy's negotiating position is now a bit stronger, because he has given Conte the signings he wanted. If the transfer window finishes as well as it has started, he can then legitimately start to say: 'I've done my bit, now it's your turn, Antonio....'
True.
This is so true. You summed it up very well.👍
Nope sorry. That Spence deal was left to Levy because it was his idea. Conte wanted various other players and has not got them. I think Richarlison was someone he has settled for but he doesn't want players for next year or the year after - he needs players now. No rocket science involved - 'buy who I want' and he's still fucking around with prospects, almost like he is trying to make him walk.
3:03 Souness is right.
Mourinho wanted to sign a central defender.
Levy (thinking he knew better) overruled him and signed Bale on loan.

Levy is a businessman. He has slowly made Tottenham very profitable, turned them into a team which consistently is in the champs league most years, has been able to create a super stadium that is like a fortress for home games as well as a new training complex with the best facilities. Now he has all that in place, he has gone ligand tried to get the best managers money's buy to really challenge. Jose didn't work, Nuno was a mistake but now he has Conte he is backing him. From what I can see this is how you build up a club overheads while not having oil money. If he turns Tottenham into a team that challenges every year on a legit level, we will look at him as one of the best owners every to do it. In my opinion based on what he has d
LOL
@Mark Pretty much agree with.
@@theimmaculated6480 'Lol' what?
Redknapp literally said Levy would turn up with new players he had no idea were signing and saying look who I've got... Souness is 100% right. Harry R literally said it was like that. Not even a debate.
Mourinho said it too, he wanted a centre back and Levy got Bale back
Pochettino said in an interview to call him the coach as he had no input on transfers so Levy has always run the show up until Conte. If Levy doesn't win anything with Conte he will need to go as he has predominantly produced no success in his tenure.

Graeme is spot on. Exactly what I have been complaining about since Boehly took over. You don't fire everyone the 1st year you walk into a business u know nothing about. You keep the former ppl running the biz for at least a year 🤦🏾♂️. That's why we have been terrible in this transfer window
Marina is still there on an advisory basis until the window closes
@@seaniekay she offered to be there. There's no proof he has been taking her advice or kept her on that advisory role. If Marina was doing our deals. They won't be taking this long and Barcelona won't be bullying us throughout this window.
@@drpitaar273 Barcelona haven't bullied us at all. The players they bought chose them over Chelsea. All this hype about chelsea vs Barcelona is just pundit created content to fill columns or air time. I personally think Boelhy has done a decent job and he isn't finished yet and won't be this window either. He appears busy as he is creating networks for future business and the players he has bought haven't been bad deals at all most have been cheaper then expected.
@@seaniekay Cucurella for 62m is a terrible deal. Market value 28m, Brighton got him for around 20m. Chelsea should have paid no more than 40m for a LB with only ONE good season of PL football.
@@drpitaar273 if marina was doing our deals lukaku would still be here and that’s a fact. She don’t like to take losses but it needs to be done all the wood needs to go wether it s a loss or not. He got lukaku out got 3 players in that improve the squad and has sold timo werner for half the amount Roman paid. In the long run he will take L’s whilst trying to figure it out but he’s done well tbh in his first window.
Levy hasn't brought the club success on the pitch, but he has laid the foundations for the long term success of football club. Yes, it allows the board and owners to make more money, but how else were they going to compete with the big boys financially? Developing the infrastructure was a necessary investment that your average impatient supporter won't want to acknowledge now, but will look back in 10 years and be extremely greatful that it happened.
I agree with you. At first I did wish he injected money into the team instead of the stadium the season after we left the lane. But I got over that when I see the level of manager we have and that our transfer policy seems to have improved. Also the training facilities are great. Levy should stick to generating the money and let paratici his team and conte build there squad.
Spot on. I actually cringe when I see comments like "one trophy in so many years". I guess people forgot that these teams were already up there spending big money, and spurs were playing catch up even before ENIC.
I’ve always rated Graeme. His vast knowledge will be a great addition to this show!

True.
My new favorite line while in an argument “alright one question at a time” for
Souness REALLY adding value to Talk Sport and a great voice against Jordan!👏👏👏
Good punditry by souness
Great conversation, neither gave any ground and I can see both points of view.
Superb debate and perfect foil for Jordan the two will have great chemistry. Somebody else articulate enough to have a proper discussion with
Glad Danny isn't on here as much. You could see he never real held a consistent view and constantly wanted to try and say something that Simon agreed with - which ended up with him having "fluid" views.
I thought Danny looked as though he was only there while he waited for the toilet to be free, so he could be sick.
Danny is still on every well, just not on Mondays
At least Murphy can string 2 words together compared to Sinclair and gab
I rate Danny personally but he's no Souness.
Love Simon Jordan, just finished his book! Incredible by the way, an incredible business man, had unreal highs but huge lows. Read that if your looking to start or run a business. What a guy, Souness has only been manager level, he doesn't know what's going on above his head. Brilliant.
thats was a great debate both had good points and at times both were right depending on the time of the club there talking about
Souness is such breath of fresh air with Simon on here. Than having Trevor Sinclair & Martin Keown making up things that suits their own agendas in a debate with Simon.
The biggest thing I would say is DL did spend money but some of the deals happened rights at the end of transfer window and it does not help the team to have a good pre season, what we were led to believe was DL negotiated to get the best price hence the delay, what we see this season is Spurs signed all the key players before others started, I was surprised to see that most of the business was done with more than one month left. Let’s see what Conte can do with this group
Agree with Craig C. You can hardly dismiss the others by name, in the same sentence as heralding Graeme. And it means Simon is no longer the sharpest knife in the set. Jim has his work cut out, and he'll enjoy every minute of it.
Great show! makes a huge differance having souness on, two very intelligent men having a intelligent coversation about football and its workings. Lets have this instead of Martin Keown and Sinclair.
Daniel Levy has made many mistakes at Spurs, but I don't believe there is any basis at all to say he chooses the players. There's been many articles written about this, including a great one in the Athletic earlier this year. Of all the managers who have left with some sort of grievance (and there's been a few) none have ever said Levy was choosing the players. Sure, financially he runs an incredibly tight ship which has undoubtedly cost Spurs some good players over the years, but there's no basis to say he chooses the players for managers. Even in the All or Nothing documentary he says he has no knowledge of players and wouldn't know where to start. His say is 100% financial. Have a go at him over Super League and furloughing of staff etc, it's deserved. But Souness is wrong on this.
Lol yeah keep believing that
So he doesn't choose the players? Ok cool.
So if the manager ask for "player X" then it's Levy's job to get that right?
If he doesn't because the cost is too high.
How do you suppose that conversation goes?
Basically the manager will ask for a player. Levy will try to acquire that player within his very stingy budget.
Obviously they will miss out on the highest costing guys who will more likely than not be the best players.
So he's forcing the manager to stay within a particular price range, couple that with players desire/availability to come, compatibility with the squad and tactics, age etc. And essentially he's "choosing".
Look at it this way; there are 5 options and Levy says two of them are too expensive, one loves life in Spain and isn't eager to leave, one had a nasty ankle injury.
Who do you "choose"?. Is that even a choice?
@@keystone6162 I think what you've described is some way off of what I was describing, in that he doesn't choose the players, doesn't sign players the manager doesn't want. Souness more than implied he goes over the manager's head and gives them the player he thinks is better. If Mourinho or Redknapp were forced to take players they didn't want and that Levy had forced players on them they would have certainly let us know.
You're right, in so far as everything he does is based on finances, which are strictly tight as I stated. He might not offer his manager a great deal of options due to his limiting of finances, but let's not get it confused with those chairman who 'want to manage.' He isn't one of those.
Levy most likely sets the financial parameters for transfers, then the manager/director of football has to find players within those parameters. Ultimately, Levy is restricting the types of players which can be bought, but the manager/DoF choose the specific players.
Athletic lol
There's a name that's missing here and that is Fabio Paratici. As the MD Football at THFC he is now the main wheeler and dealer with Player Recruitment / Disposal - It was he who persuaded Conte to join last November and together they are completely re-hashing the whole footballing structure and philosophy at the Club - and we long-suffering supporters are starting to see its benefits. Credit to Daniel Levy for bringing Fabio into the Club - and for buying into the way in which they want THFC to finally fulfil its full potential.
That was a brilliant, intelligent debate with two strong minded men who know a thing or two. Even if you don’t agree with what they say it’s still a good listen 👍
Great chat
I think levey (spurs owner) is one of the best owner out I know they haven't won a lot but how many clubs have but what they do have is the a great foundation for the future even if the prem fell apart they have the best stadium In the world now and money in the bank they will be amazing in the future
He isn't the owner
They'll blow it all. Fail central.
I agree with Souness on this one. I do believe Levy imposed transfers on Rednapp, AVB, Poch and even Mourinho. I'm not saying those managers didn't get anyone they wanted, but only if the deal was right for Levy. For example, Van De Vaart was a last minute bargain that Levy initiated, negotiated and completed. He's even done it this window with Djed Spence. Comte admitted he wasn't his choice but was happy to have him and thinks he's a good player. The difference this time is Conte IS getting the players he wants and Spence was the only one Levy chose. Although Udogie could be another Levy transfer, to get in, loan out and then sell in a few years for a profit.
When Conte Walk into Levy office and said, I want Perisic, the history of Daniel would say no, but he brought him in at the Managers request. It is grossly unfair for Conte to make public players that are being negotiated on and how they arrive that the conclusion, but Conte can do no wrong. For the record, Poch had us in the CL 4 years and Levy was slaughtered for not having enough ambitions. Now we are talking about moving up one place to third and that will be the genius of Conte. Hypocrites much? This idea of score keeping you see who Conte wants or not want is pitting the Chairman against the director of football and Conte's desire of which are all speculations. Conte should never have made such public statement. Especially for a guy that will walk away from a club because the toaster doesn't work. And what are we going to left with.
As a point of correction for Souness and Jordan, it was Franco Baldini the DoF at the time that spunked the Bale money on a load of dossers (Eriksen excepted).
Talksport is nothing without Simon Jordan
Love how Souness stays calm and sticks to his point compared to other pundits who debate with Jordan.
I am a huge Simon Jordan fan, however Graeme Souness addition to TalkSport is a fantastic one. Souness is absolute class, he was a great footballer and had the balls to stick the flag of his team while playing away in Turkey…..
I met him in a charity event before the Scottish referendum, he made it clear that Scotland stood taller as part of the U.K. but what was more obvious is his devotion to Scotland and love of football.
You can actually see the progression if you look at it . They've hired up and coming managers to try and help their progression into a stable top six club always competing with the other top 6 clubs for those champions league places . They've progressed their managers to managers with greater reputations and greater needs to build projects . So Levy called the shots to some degree but so did their managers , again to some degree . Better quality of manager demands more trust in the manager and recognition of the fact that the managers needs tie in with the needs of the football club itself . As for champions league this season , don't write off Chelsea and Arsenal yet . ManU are having problems at the moment but Arsenal; and Chelsea may surprise people , or rather Tottenham may find themselves up against a greater number of opponents with a capacity to win games than people are thinking now .
''one question at a time'' 😂😂😂
Levy 100% tells the Coach what players will be bought... no way does a Coach go to Levy and say "these are the plyers i want" and Levy works towards that...
Levy goes ro the coach and says "these are the players we're going to buy for you"...
Simon Jordan is smart. He is also clever at winning arguments. But what he is best at is making opponents buckle in order to win. When he has Keown and Sinclair in front of him it always happens. What I don't like is his penchant for changing the argument. Manouvering it around to make it look like he is winning. Souness can see it happening. He is able to take on board and digest and answer Jordan in a complete and unflustered way. Jordan at times fall into the Piers Morgan trap. In which he starts trying to talk over the other with a constant barrage of information ill related to what is happening. That annoys me because if you aren't quick enough it makes it looks like you are winning. But, if handled correctly it can make you look like a numpty . Good work Souness.
Totally agree!
Graham speaking facts , we spurs fan always do 😀
Another trophyless season ahead
@@Longrunthefox Yes, for your team.
Loving the show by the way. Graeme is right Chelsea only wanted that left back because city wanted him
And they ended up paying £12m over the asking price of £50m, great business for Brighton.
Another thing not being mentioned . When a new manager joins a club , the players he tries always at the start are players that manager is familiar with . It's also why I'm not sure ManU are going to have a good season . Because every link is with Ajax players and Ajax are a team thar are always not at the top echelons of their league because they can afford the best players in the world but because the dutch league is not that strong on the world stage compared to Spain , Italy , Germany , England , etc . Why is it always Rangers or Celtic in Scotland but they very rarely have good european runs . That's the same with Holland . So for now , Ten Haag is clinging to players hre's familiar with in terms of trying to get deals done but as time goes on , he'll have more team to judge his players and communicate with scouts at the club for both what he feels the club need and what the scouts recommend .
Brilliant debate!
Souness talking about Levy having too much say in transfers is gold when you consider he signed "George Weahs cousin" for Southampton. I bet the owners at the time were really pleased with that deal
I remember that transfer 😄😂
Simon is wrong here, Daniel Levy has imposed players on managers before, just look at Redknapp and Poch’s time at Spurs for a start. That HAS changed now with Conte working in accordance with Paratici.
Did you listen to the video? ...Souness agreed with you ....levy did "previously impose himself/interfere in players in and out and like Graeme said here that is why Spurs have not won anywhere near the amount of trophies they should have,
@@gjef9971 yes I did… that’s why I said Simon is wrong.
I think the only thing that's changed over the years is the ridiculous amounts of money changing hands in football has led chairman/owners to either appoint a football director or take a closer interest themselves in transfer activity, but in my view all a chairman needs to do is appoint the right manager & the rest looks after itself.
The thing is a lot of the best recruitment at clubs these days is done by very knowledgeable football people, but souness wouldn't consider them football men as they didn't play at the top level on the pitch. Football has moved on from a manager buying a player on a punt because he likes the look of him
Conte pushes players a lot but they respond well because he also supports his players in a real way, has integrity and makes players/ the squad better because he knows what he's doing.
I can see both sides. And actually I think right in the middle is most likely. I doubt Levy has made decisions himself on footballing ability. But has he controlled an outcome based on financial constraints or decisions, absolutely yes. It mergers into one but the driver behind the decision is going to be different. I can see where Jordan is coming from entirely. Very reasonable and likely true but Graham has some likely hood too.
We have had technical directors before, we have had true coaches before that make those decisions. So I don't think it's all Levy. The guy is a pure business man, cut throat too. For him I'm sure it's all about negotiation of what works best finalically whisky trying to get the outcome the mangers want. Most of the time historically I think that has meant him saying we can get X so thr closest is Y. Much to the frustration of a manager so yes decisions made but from a financial/commercial angle.
Either way I'm feeling energised again with our Spurs for the first time now since Poch. I think we are back on track and making moves once again.
I think your right Graham this is the first time under Levy we have a manager that has the last say in transfers
Souness is a legend and gets better with time - from a spurs fan
The way Simon calls out genuinely 😅😅
Absolutely brilliant this Jim quality GS
How long before someone mentions Ali dia?
I love listening to Simon and he’s thought. despite his admiration for Souness, i’ll put Souey in his place early on and show him who’s boss on here, instant regret !! 😂
Well said Graham you spoke so much sense
Abramovich absolutely didn't get his trousers pulled down early on.. he came in, spent the cash and had one of the greatest English teams of all time.
What gives Levy away and why Graeme is right is the huge change in attitude towards the transfer market that Spurs have shown this year - how many deals have Spurs lost because they have acted so slowly and that can only be for one reason and that is the terms that Levy wants to negotiate - maybe the penny has finally dropped that success increases the clubs income whereas as transfers and salaries are an expense - the signing of Haaland by Man City shows how success can actually bring down your expenses because the best players want to play for the best teams - he has to be the bargain of the century and Kante is another prime example
Great debate :)
Finally someone who can out do Simon on understanding football.
Great show.
Souness knows his stuff and is very eloquent in making his points.
Lol Hitchen told you how spurs buys players in the amazon documentary. Manager is asked a STYLE of player. DOF (or equivalent) gets a list of players that a deal might get done. Then the club (ie levy) buys them. Go watch it if you're looking to contradict this first.
Souness is the best pundit out there - an intelligent guy who understands football and business. Insightful, considered, passionate but calm with a clarify of thought.
They actually filmed a conversation like this between Conte and Levy. They were sat down and Conte was telling him he wanted to bring this guy, that guy, and why etc, and it was clear to me that Conte is a man who wants to do things his way only. I think we all knew this about Conte already but the changes are now being seen in the windows, which is proof in the pudding. Conte wants to win trophies and challenge for the league eventually. That's what he builds and plans for.
I have been to the training ground on quite a few occasions and levy even has a say on how the amenity lawns are cut. He has a say in every aspect.
Simon jordan just doesn’t loose
I like spines and Jordan and enjoy listening to them but Jesus that was hard work
Simon met his match here. Quality viewing 👌🏻
Levy has been in control of the ins and outs of Tottenham just refer to the Pochettino comment that he should be called the coach of Tottenham as he had no say who was signed for the club.
