      @@AlexSmith-zh2vq You should try listening properly to the sequences of dialogue.Jordan was the one out of his depth here, not because he lacks intellect, he has plenty of that.Was because he was being impulsive, due to his predisposition to defend businessmen, at the expense of "the possibility" that people in the football game might understand something, about recruitment.
      He was then forced into a couple of concessions here because he realised he had the mistakenly assumed, what Graham was saying, instead of listing to the detail. Have to admit, you can't blame Jordan sometimes for doing this, because of some of the mental Midget, the has had to deal with on the show. I have more respect for Graham after this.I feel that sometimes when he's commenting, he let's his bias for Liverpool. get in the way, especially when she's talking about Manchester United.But here, because he's talking about the game in general being more reasonable and balanced.
      Jordan was actually trying to say that owners don't get involved in the footballing decisions here, which I'm surprised that in for, because that's pretty stupid, as we can see that this is entirely the difference between well-run and not very well-run clubs in the Premier league.Graeme's point about Chelsea, and the guys coming in thinking it was more simple than it is, only to realise later that they've made some ludicrous decisions, is the point well made, especially because they couldn't be more careful and kept some backroom staff

    I personally think that when Levy was negotiating with Conte, he had a very weak negotiating hand. Spurs were 9th, playing appallingly, headed entirely down the drain. Levy wanted Conte in the summer, but Conte said he was too raw from his Inter divorce. So when Conte negotiated for real, he could demand, and get, what he required to be prepared to come to Spurs. He didn't need Spurs, Spurs needed him. He came because he could see potential, because he wanted to work with Son and Kane, the best strike force in the EPL. But he was able to lay down the ground rules of: 'if xxxxx doesn't happen, I'm not coming.' AND he was prepared to walk out in the summer if Levy went back on his word. Conte is giving Levy tough love and it seems to be working....but it's only working because he's delivering results on the pitch. Without that, he would be out the door.....Levy's negotiating position is now a bit stronger, because he has given Conte the signings he wanted. If the transfer window finishes as well as it has started, he can then legitimately start to say: 'I've done my bit, now it's your turn, Antonio....'

    Levy hasn't brought the club success on the pitch, but he has laid the foundations for the long term success of football club. Yes, it allows the board and owners to make more money, but how else were they going to compete with the big boys financially? Developing the infrastructure was a necessary investment that your average impatient supporter won't want to acknowledge now, but will look back in 10 years and be extremely greatful that it happened.

    Daniel Levy has made many mistakes at Spurs, but I don't believe there is any basis at all to say he chooses the players. There's been many articles written about this, including a great one in the Athletic earlier this year. Of all the managers who have left with some sort of grievance (and there's been a few) none have ever said Levy was choosing the players. Sure, financially he runs an incredibly tight ship which has undoubtedly cost Spurs some good players over the years, but there's no basis to say he chooses the players for managers. Even in the All or Nothing documentary he says he has no knowledge of players and wouldn't know where to start. His say is 100% financial. Have a go at him over Super League and furloughing of staff etc, it's deserved. But Souness is wrong on this.

      Lol yeah keep believing that

    • @keystone6162
      @keystone6162 Před rokem

      So he doesn't choose the players? Ok cool.
      So if the manager ask for "player X" then it's Levy's job to get that right?
      If he doesn't because the cost is too high.
      How do you suppose that conversation goes?
      Basically the manager will ask for a player. Levy will try to acquire that player within his very stingy budget.
      Obviously they will miss out on the highest costing guys who will more likely than not be the best players.
      So he's forcing the manager to stay within a particular price range, couple that with players desire/availability to come, compatibility with the squad and tactics, age etc. And essentially he's "choosing".
      Look at it this way; there are 5 options and Levy says two of them are too expensive, one loves life in Spain and isn't eager to leave, one had a nasty ankle injury.
      Who do you "choose"?. Is that even a choice?

    • @df4296
      @df4296 Před rokem +1

      @@keystone6162 I think what you've described is some way off of what I was describing, in that he doesn't choose the players, doesn't sign players the manager doesn't want. Souness more than implied he goes over the manager's head and gives them the player he thinks is better. If Mourinho or Redknapp were forced to take players they didn't want and that Levy had forced players on them they would have certainly let us know.
      You're right, in so far as everything he does is based on finances, which are strictly tight as I stated. He might not offer his manager a great deal of options due to his limiting of finances, but let's not get it confused with those chairman who 'want to manage.' He isn't one of those.

    I agree with Souness on this one. I do believe Levy imposed transfers on Rednapp, AVB, Poch and even Mourinho. I'm not saying those managers didn't get anyone they wanted, but only if the deal was right for Levy. For example, Van De Vaart was a last minute bargain that Levy initiated, negotiated and completed. He's even done it this window with Djed Spence. Comte admitted he wasn't his choice but was happy to have him and thinks he's a good player. The difference this time is Conte IS getting the players he wants and Spence was the only one Levy chose. Although Udogie could be another Levy transfer, to get in, loan out and then sell in a few years for a profit.

For the record, Poch had us in the CL 4 years and Levy was slaughtered for not having enough ambitions. Now we are talking about moving up one place to third and that will be the genius of Conte. Hypocrites much? This idea of score keeping you see who Conte wants or not want is pitting the Chairman against the director of football and Conte's desire of which are all speculations. Conte should never have made such public statement. Especially for a guy that will walk away from a club because the toaster doesn't work. And what are we going to left with.

    You can actually see the progression if you look at it . They've hired up and coming managers to try and help their progression into a stable top six club always competing with the other top 6 clubs for those champions league places . They've progressed their managers to managers with greater reputations and greater needs to build projects . So Levy called the shots to some degree but so did their managers , again to some degree . Better quality of manager demands more trust in the manager and recognition of the fact that the managers needs tie in with the needs of the football club itself . As for champions league this season , don't write off Chelsea and Arsenal yet . ManU are having problems at the moment but Arsenal; and Chelsea may surprise people , or rather Tottenham may find themselves up against a greater number of opponents with a capacity to win games than people are thinking now .

What I don't like is his penchant for changing the argument. Manouvering it around to make it look like he is winning. Souness can see it happening. He is able to take on board and digest and answer Jordan in a complete and unflustered way. Jordan at times fall into the Piers Morgan trap. In which he starts trying to talk over the other with a constant barrage of information ill related to what is happening. That annoys me because if you aren't quick enough it makes it looks like you are winning. But, if handled correctly it can make you look like a numpty . Good work Souness.

    Another thing not being mentioned . When a new manager joins a club , the players he tries always at the start are players that manager is familiar with . It's also why I'm not sure ManU are going to have a good season . Because every link is with Ajax players and Ajax are a team thar are always not at the top echelons of their league because they can afford the best players in the world but because the dutch league is not that strong on the world stage compared to Spain , Italy , Germany , England , etc . Why is it always Rangers or Celtic in Scotland but they very rarely have good european runs . That's the same with Holland . So for now , Ten Haag is clinging to players hre's familiar with in terms of trying to get deals done but as time goes on , he'll have more team to judge his players and communicate with scouts at the club for both what he feels the club need and what the scouts recommend .

    I can see both sides. And actually I think right in the middle is most likely. I doubt Levy has made decisions himself on footballing ability. But has he controlled an outcome based on financial constraints or decisions, absolutely yes. It mergers into one but the driver behind the decision is going to be different. I can see where Jordan is coming from entirely. Very reasonable and likely true but Graham has some likely hood too.
    We have had technical directors before, we have had true coaches before that make those decisions. So I don't think it's all Levy. The guy is a pure business man, cut throat too. For him I'm sure it's all about negotiation of what works best finalically whisky trying to get the outcome the mangers want. Most of the time historically I think that has meant him saying we can get X so thr closest is Y. Much to the frustration of a manager so yes decisions made but from a financial/commercial angle.
