Boss DM-101 (stereo) analog delay... with Synths?

  • UPDATE: Boss have updated the firmware to 1.02 in this, which addresses both topics I discuss in the video. Grab that update today!!
    Quick demo of the Boss DM-101 analog delay, focusing on stereo usage. It features 1200 milliseconds of BBD lushness, and many different modes to try. It also has MIDI sync capabilities, which I show. I'm running a Norand Mono directly into the Boss's mono input.
    Note: Don't make the mistake I did and try to use TRS cables for the output. They don't work because of the internal switching mechanism!
    This pedal-- intended for guitars I'm sure-- has a -10dB input level, so I tried to keep the Norand from distorting at the input, but sometimes it does. Typically in the studio I'll use this on an effects send and in EFFECTS ONLY (100% Wet) mode. For this demo, I set it to "Normal" output mode, which mixes the dry and wet signals.
    The modes from REFLECT to PATTERN are stereo, and I show some ping-pong type delays here. Dialing up the Mod Depth and Rate gives some almost Leslie sounds, so it might be nice on organs. I can't wait to see how it holds up to the Strymon Volante (tape delay emulator), OTO BIM (new 12-bit digital delay), and the Lexicon Prime Time 93.
    Is this the best analog delay pedal ever made? Maybe so, and I can't wait to use it live for my hardware sets.
    What are your thoughts? Is this useful for synths?

    Those dreaded high pitched noises aren't just painfully hurting my ears, but also naturally mute a BBD delay. When using BBD delay on vocals you can usually stop the delay by shushing sharply into the microphone, as long as the noise you produce is rather high pitched. Aside of the Variation knob positioning the delay in the stereo field in some setting, if I understand this right, you also crippled a lot of the delay tail with those terrible squeals. Outside of this complaint, I'm very happy you made this demo and demonstrated the Norand Mono along the way, both very interesting units I might want to own, outside of those high pitched bleeps. :) Thanks for making this.

      Thanks! Its a REALLY good analog delay, and flexible enough to use with instruments besides guitar.

    Incredible review on this new edition to the Roland line up, absolutely buying one of these after watching this. Really enjoy the perspective this comes from as it’s geared more towards production and producers of all kinds, not just guitar players. Very good performance to, really showcases all the sounds and what’s it’s capable of.
    Nice work 🤘🏼

      not nice work... no stereo input, can't use stereo modulation pedals before it in signal chain..

    Great work man. I was curious about this thing and wanted to see it used with synths more. I demo and showcase rare gear on my channel and i know the work that goes into them. keep up the good content bro. Subscribed and liked.

    Absolute deal breaker that it doesn't take line level signals directly

      Yup its tough if you don't have an Aux send or something similar to lower the line level signal.

    Great demo! Thx🙌🏽🩶 How did You sync delay with external clock source? I use Eventide Space as a source and DM101 does not follow with tempo changes.

      Ooooo tough question. In this case, the Roland TR-8S is the Master MIDI clock. I wonder if the Eventide Space has to be set to SEND MIDI clock somehow? Normally, effects boxes like this only receive and repeat to MIDI THRU, not generate and send MIDI clock. Then, make sure MIDI goes into the DM-101

      @@Manmademadmanthanks!
      Yes, Space sends midi clock. There was no problem with other gear - it works with Microbrute and TimeLine as a clock source.
      I am not sure how to manage midi on DM 101. Tried different settings, no success.
      Anyway, big thanks for very nice and deep review🙌🏽🩶 it was my inspiration to buy this great sounding device. 🎶🚀🎛️🎚️

    i can't believe why they made it with mono input... that sucks 100%

    • @Manmademadman
      @Manmademadman  Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah, I imagine this is because it's trying to stick to the DM-1 as closely as possible and its a single bank of BBD's, but still. Modernization would be great! At least there's stereo output via the PAN algs/taps, which are amazing.

      @@Manmademadman yes and it is sad, that can't use stereo modulation pedals before DM-101 like stereo phazer or flanger in signal chain..
      . In that price, stereo input should be there, like Boss Space echo RE-202 have.

      @vincewizz8534 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@uuno.turhapurothe difference is the RE-202 is a digital pedal. Having a stereo in here means doubling all BBD circuitry and adding various mixing strategies… it would likely have doubled the price of the pedal.
