    Keep in mind they can all hear each other. Their minds are telling them to catch up and play in time with Rob. Their muscle memory is screaming at them “CATCH UP! CATCH UP! YOUR’RE BEHIND!”. Their headphones weren’t noise cancelling. They essentially had to concentrate on deliberately playing off time which is so difficult to do when you’ve played on time for so long

    • @vortexbeater8267
      @vortexbeater8267 Před 3 lety +106

      Not really. When you play for long enough, playing on time isn't something that you are forced to do. It helps with adaptability, but the stability is still there, so if you can get focused on being the exact same distance from the other one, it will be stable as long as no one messes up. Which seemed to be the biggest problem here

      @athmaid Před 2 lety +34

      @@eyeseeyou913 that's exactly what the comment meant I think. They can hear each other, but not on purpose. So they have to be careful not to sync up. Honestly they should have gotten noise cancelling headphones since even closed studio headphones they are wearing don't isolate enough. But that was probably not an option budget-wise when this was filmed. And it would have made for a boring video

    As a late beginner guitarist, I found this a bit encouraging. I know their job as a team is hard, but you rarely see musicians mess up, nor do you see how many takes they may do before they record one good enough to upload. I'm recording my journey as I learn just so I can see how much I grow with time, and I get frustrated sometimes when I know I can play a piece well but once the camera is on, it just changes everything. The more you attempt it, the harder it gets for some reason. My hands get clammy, and with each attempt, it gets more stiff. It's also tiring at times. I applaud these guys for trying 60 times. There must have been added pressure of everyone being there and time running out. The piece was quite complex with a lot of notes per minute and a lot of string skipping, but they managed to get it done. Great job!

      @kamekomiyamora Před 3 lety +38

      @@meneerhalfwerk7096 I mean, they each had their own sound-blocking headphones with their own personal clicktrack/metronome. I figured it's more keeping your own rhythm and playing the peace without mistakes, not getting confused or distracted by the other two (why one asked if they should move further apart), than it is 'playing out of sync'. The first guy would start on beat 1, second guy starts on beat 2, third guy starts on beat 3, and they all just have to play the piece perfectly after that. At least that's what I figured from watching.

    • @kamekomiyamora
      @kamekomiyamora Před 3 lety +6

      Could also be 1st person on 1st beat, 2nd person on 1+, and 3rd person on 2nd beat. It's quite close, but they're all playing in time with themselves. It's just a matter of starting on a different beat/time and playing through the whole song keeping in time with their own clicktrack/metronome. They could have copied the same person 3 times or record them separately, but they wanted to get the delay effect in that room all recorded at the same time. :)

      @@Fs3i Exactly 🤯 Even 10 takes is a lot of effort. It's not a short piece either. I could imagine the many times they were SO CLOSE but someone messed up. Deep down, I know everyone makes mistakes, but few show that. All you see is advanced players and pros. They could have just showed us the end result, but it's really nice seeing what it takes to have a clean recording now and then. Now I'm curious how many takes or cuts online bands do before they are satisfied, ya know?

      not analog. it's just delay. analog and digital refer to representations of sound in another physical phenomenon, like voltages in an effects box. the delay here is actual soundwaves produced moments later by other musicians. and the reverb is actual soundwaves bouncing off walls of the room. the delay effect is produced without any transformation made to/from an analogous signal.

    Getting three guitars to hit a decently complicated part exactly 3 sixteenths apart from each other and not sync up or move up and screw the whole thing up is a god tier move. Especially since it only took 60 takes. Me and one of my buddies worked on something like this years ago with me following him an eighth note behind and we never did quite get it, despite working on it for months on end and probably thousands of takes in the end.

      they actually just used a camera on a dolly, which they just moved around
      Scallon is a big fan of the dolly, so it’s no surprise that they got the cameraman to use it

      I think its because if you shout instantly after the song is over the recording software might pick it up and its a bitch to remove, so they give it like 2-3 seconds before they ask

      Right. Could potentially ruin the recording. I know i stay dead silent if I get a perfect take after an hour or two. Dont even breathe because i don't want the mic picking up anything else til im done.

    This is how i started to listen to music. I think in my own head that i can listen to one instrument at a time in a concert, to then expand the view from one to all gives me the chills. This creates that understanding of coherence in between the different instrument, to then hear the whole. In this end, this makes song so much more enjoyable to hear, and enjoy. Which is due to this song, Thank you Rob! :)

    takes me back to high school marching band. one year i played one of five bass drums, everything you play is split between you and 4 other dudes. its a lot of 32nd notes and stuff like that. you can practice on your own, but it doesn't sound like anything until you get everyone together, and when you do... prepare to be there a long time and to feel really bad when you mess up. its inevitable though. 60 takes seems very believable even for good guitarists.
