MANMADEMADMAN: THROB1, s01e101
For as long as I can remember, I have thought about making music like this, throbbing dance music but through the thick wall of distortion. I don't know why it's taken me this long to do it, but it came to me today; minimal number of machines and gritty distortion with saturation so heavy that it becomes something else. This setup allows the manifestation of this fever dream. This is quite a bit like my "UNPATCHED" series a few years back, but with dedicated drums!
I plan on doing more like this in the future.
WARNING: This gets loud, and the distortion is completely intentional. You are hearing the raw output of the Roland TR-8S with no further processing, EQ, or compression.
Setup: Norand Mono into Roland MC-707 (with Bit Crusher on Master FX) and that feeds into the Roland TR-8S in stereo, side-chained to the kick drum. The Master FX on the TR-8S is set to Fuzz at about 50% wet. The side-chaining is crucial, as is the multiple layers of distortion. While this sounds analog, the only true analog synth is the Norand. Everything else is digital!

Make Roland boxes one long Roland box!

Smashing two @rolandsynthandaira machines into one monolithic surface makes Jack a Happy Friday! Crunchy AF (unintended) but you get the idea. Reminds me of Ye Olde Warehouse Days where the machines couldn't do these kinds of things on their own; they needed 10x as many boxes to do this. And every channel was overdriving a Mackie 1604 if you were lucky. Not as improv as usual but this time I ca...

The MC-707 is great for these top lines and fill sounds...and also for the AMEN BREAK warping, since it does it in realtime. All of these sounds were randomized so they'll never be heard again. Thanks for the overview! In this setup I would have put the delay return on it's own channel, so you could sculpt it more or even control the Feedback with the mixer send. What is this stand the Mixer 1 is on, is it stable enough or wiggly?

    • @el_dani
      @el_dani Před 28 dny

      ah you said it's an Apache A1, I don't find this particular model, what inch size is it? The Mixer 1 is kind of special in size, as it's quite deep. So is the 12'' model stable enough, does it just fix by weight?

    • @Manmademadman
      @Manmademadman Před 28 dny

      @@el_dani Looks like the Apache A1 has been replaced with the Warthog. I assume same build, minus the triangular foot. This stand DEFINES "built like a tank" because i could stand on it, and I have accidentally. It's overbuilt and will not rock or wiggle at all. Big fan of his gear!

    • @Manmademadman
      @Manmademadman Před 28 dny

      Appreciate the feedback... I have found over the years that delay into its own channel isn't necessary if there's a delay return like on the MODEL1. Why? Because the OTO has a feedback knob and programmable filtering built in, but more importantly because it takes up a precious stereo channel. Most other delays these days have feedback filtering too. The MODEL1 has a "lowcut on 1/2" button which does the additional job. In my studio, I have all effects going to a separate bus (Speck Xtramix CXI) so that they can be recorded/tweaked on their own in the DAW. Live (and in the heat of the moment) you can easily get lost and have runaway delays/reverbs and having one place to look works best for me.

    • @el_dani
      @el_dani Před 28 dny

      @@Manmademadman that‘s true. Only thing I will miss from my actual bigger mixer and what you can‘t do with this solution: send the delay return channel to another aux for example to put Reverb on the delay signal. I‘ll have all the inputs on a patchbay anyway, so if I‘m in Dub mood I can adjust my routing.

  • @hostnik777
    @hostnik777 Před měsícem

    Not sure if the settings were truly equivalent (assuming that Primal Tap's controls weren't scaled and calibrated to exactly match PrimeTime's), but in the first 2 examples especially, the PTime rang out a lot longer and brighter. I don't care if that's in a mix or not, I would 100% hear it. Were you not able to adjust the controls to match the sounds any better? If not, then I'd say PTap is a good approximation, but there's still a noticeable gap. Now whether that is 'better" or not really depends on your goals and mix. But anyone who says these sound the same is either deaf or daft.

    Thanks for this video However, I wish you did chord to chord and line to line when comparing sounds You did "dual mode" on the Jupiter-8 but compared it to mono/whole mode on rhe system 8. That's wrong my friend. You wrote on top of that segment that the System-8 was not in dual mode so why didn't you correct it? I've owned 2 totally restored (by Kent) Jupiter-8's back during the 1990's and a Jupiter-6 but I kept only the MKS-80 Rev4 and I love the System 8. Love it. Btw, my JX3P on the system 8 is awsome. I did own during the 80's JX3P and later the Mks30 but now ive got 2 of the boutique JX03 and the System 8. They are so much flexible and can imitate the original easily. You also forgot to mention the System 8 itself lol. There's one thing I do love about the Jupiter-8 and its the Random arp. The progression is so cool and I never heard any random arp on any other instrument. Also the response time in the arp when in lets say dial mode bass is simply unbeatable. I'm still trying to capture it. I also love the JP08. Very underestimated synth

    Very nice instrument, both soundwise as esthetically. ❤ A modulation question though, out of curiosity: apart from S&H is there a way to ‘sync’ one of the LFO’s to the tempo of an inbound gate (for instance coming from a sequencer)? I honestly do not know if this way of syncing was all that easy to realise with 70’s circuitry. Most of the times, tempo based modulation seems to have been done with an additional CV output on the sequence, back in those days, no? Or by resetting the LFO via a gate, combined with a manual tempo synchronisation.

      It's not possible to trigger the LFO's (either one) with any input. I haven't found a way to fake this either. It was more important to me to get the S+H clocked from gate, which it now easily does.

      @@Manmademadman I like the walnut. STG was playing it at NAMM and he unplugged everything on the front except the output and the glide, and wondering what was triggering it. Are there more connections in the rear?

      @@leyetnin1the one at NAMM was normaled so you can play without patching. I think the one in this video was a prototype and so doesn’t have that. @thesuitandtieguy has mentioned that there will probably be MIDI on the back of the ones going forward. He is getting feedback on the units before committing to SMD based boards.

    Great video. I can't help but laugh when people say "the hardware sounds more three-dimensional! Fatter! Has more depth!" In a blind test no one would know the difference between these two. Hardware might be slightly different, but not "better." If the hardware inspires more creation, or if you just like collecting old gear like I do, then it's better for you. But most of the plugins these days are at parity and I can't understand people clinging to the idea that hardware sounds objectively better.

      Perfectly said! One thing thats not discussed is that theres typically an A/D and D/A conversion in there somewhere-- which is admittedly negligible, but all those imperfections can add up. I'm a MOSTLY analog guy (60 input Speck mixer) but the idea that effects are nearly identical to my ears (clipping aside) is amazing. Plus, a delay is only as good as what you pump into it, right?

      We are in a strange time of extreme fetishization of the analog era converging with near perfect digital emulation. I suppose it's inevitable that it lends to some oddball thinking. I go by two basic rules. 1) Does is sound good? 2) Does it inspire me to make music? The Vprom is perfect emulation of a Linndrum, but I actually bought the real thing, because it absolutely inspires me to make more music. For ME, the real Linndrum is better. But literally nobody could tell the difference in a song. @@Manmademadman

      Did you actually LISTEN to the first 2 examples? Or the 4th? The hardware was ABSOLUTELY more 3-dimensional. I was playing back through MacBook speakers on a half-closed laptop that was 4 feet below my left ear, and even then the differences were blatantly obvious. Now whether that means one is better than the other will depend on your goals, needs and preferences, but to say "no one would know" just speaks to your own ears.

    Is there an envelope follower you can apply to the filter & can you adjust the amount of env to filter?

      I WISH! There are CV inputs for Comp and SAT (L+R) and sidechain (for compression) but alas not for filter Freq. You've just got to work that knob by hand/ear coordination I guess.
