  • Should you upgrade from the RE-20? In fact do you even want a multi-head delay at all?
Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! We’ll compare the RE-202 to the Strymon Volante and Line 6 DL4 MkII NEXT WEEK. But for now…
We finally got our hands on Boss’s exciting new RE-202 and RE-2 Space Echoes. Why all the fuss? Well, back in 1974 Roland debuted perhaps the most loved and still-cherished tape echo unit of all time, the RE-201 Space Echo. Popular with guitarists forever, they’ve nonetheless waned from common usage because of their, shall we say, ‘mechanical fallibilities’. However that mechanical, analogue uniqueness is what defines the sound of the RE-201 and explains why you’ll still find them in studios everywhere, loved and maintained by people who just can’t make the sound any other way.
Boss - offspring of Roland - introduced the RE-20 pedal all the way back in 2007, a digital emulation of the fabled RE-201 in a relatively compact pedal format. Sure, it didn’t sound exactly like the 201, but it did a great job and has remained much loved ever since.
2022 seems numerically appropriate as all these 2s and 0s 1s have reformed for the all-new RE-2 and RE-202: two new pedals that benefit from everything Roland and Boss have learned over these 48 years since the seminal machine. As you’d expect, we have them all here for subjection to schwang.
Now this is not a deep dive into all the features. For that we’d //really// recommend Pete Thorn’s demo here: • THE BEST TAPE DELAY PE...
And to get another listen to whether the RE-202 and RE-2 sound like an old RE-201, check out Andy Martin’s demo at reverb.com here: • BOSS' New RE-202 Space...
Meantime, we’ll be asking some TPS-shaped questions, that hopefully doesn’t repeat [geddit, repeat] too much of what’s already out there. Enjoy the video!

I've owned an RE-20 for about 3 years and I'm happy with it. To my ear, I prefer the slight grittiness of the RE-20 to the 202. However, I think they both sound great.

  • @marcofioravanti4176
    @marcofioravanti4176 Před 2 lety +18

Thanks for the comparison! I still have my old, trusty RE-20.
To get it even less digital sounding and more "dangerous" I can highly recommend following treatment:
(With a little warning, too..! 😀)
    1.)
Put the RE-20 into the "Long Mode": Less pristine highs, doubled delay time. A "hint" of Lofi, if you will...
Fire it up holding "Tap" and keep holding it until the motion LED stops flashing and lights up solid.
Turn the "Mode Selector" to "2". Release "Tap" and tap it shortly once again. Ready.
( To go back to the regular "Short Mode" again, do the same, but put Mode Selector to "1".)
    2.)
    Refeed the signal:
Put the guitar or synth into Input A, as usual. Go from Output A to Input B!
Go from Output B into your DAW or next pedal or amp or whatever:
Delay signal gets relatively louder, a bit more saturated and flangey, gets sooner into self oscillation.
Warning: Putting the now "phased out" sounding reverb too high results in an unpleasant digital feedback mess!
So be careful with the reverb setting!! And now even the reverb is only mono...
    But, that said:
All in all, 1.) and 2.) make the RE-20 giving me a tad more convincing tape delay simulation!
I sometimes even back of both tone knobs by a good bit: Less highs, less bass = more mids, not in the way.
To having the delays cutting through the mix, go "east" with the treble knob instead.
    Cheers! Have fun!

Very cool episode. I'm loving the care with production details such as lighting and crafty edits. Too easy to let these go unsung. I was very struck by Dan's comment on sentimental attachment to the old girl. I really get that. The happiness from picking up my first electric while wearing a TPS shirt actually makes me play better. Or so it seems. Cheers.

Ah fellas, thanks so much for the shout out, I can't tell you how much that has made my day. I'm so glad that it was such an interesting question to you - in reality I think for me it was quite selfish, but you guys managed to blow it wide open and make it apply for a learning point for everyone.
You may remember recently my acquisition of a Marshall DSL15 - which I am still absolutely loving every single day - however, I feel like I am missing some reverb. But I tried a couple of different things (cranking the reverb to 11 and moving the Slo before the wet/dry split and turning the effect down a lot) and it didn't really inspire me anymore, so I went back and listened to a couple of the delay shows and I felt myself seeing the lines blur between the delays that I was enjoying hearing, and what I would consider to be reverb. I think what I have discovered through this show and the previous shows is in reality what I am missing from the sound of the Marshall is a multi-head delay - whether it be an Echorec replica or a Space Echo reissue etc. It has lead me to some more, personal questions about things I may do with my board - but maybe that's a video for me to make. Great show as always guys and absolutely awesome to see Mick back on the vintage Strat again and to see the Gretsch come back out! Big love to the TPS family and see you guys soon.

I think that Andy's video for Reverb was interesting. I think it demonstrates the variability in each original RE unit. In general I have only ever preferred the tape units, but I think the 202 brings a lot to the table. Wish it had an analog preamp model in it because I think it misses a lot of the inherent texture that comes from the units having their own preamps - the Catalinbread delays are a great example of why it is great to have.
Thanks for another great vid guys

The difference between delay and 'verb was explained to me as being: delay = 'ordered' repeats and 'verb = 'random' repeats. This groks with the multi-head setting and the phasing/modulation artefacts approaching a perceived 'verb effect as aural complexity is compounded. The delay(s), however sped up and stacked up, will only ever approach 'verb because they are still fundamentally ordered repeats even with simulated reflections. Also points to the awesome, algorithmic mentalness of the great digital 'verb units in randomising the maths in a non-machine manner, being able to humanly 'emulate' space to our brains and yet be musically pleasant to the ear...man, there's some clever, clever dudes out there.

I love delay and almost always have it on when playing. If just noodling around I've found that setting the delay time to be a factor of my at-rest heartbeat to be very natural and relaxing. The physiological effect of music is part of what attracts me to it but it is also something that can affect my playing (rush, drag, over play, etc...). Tape echo in all its analog glory is hard, if not impossible, to replicate in the non-analog realm. I thought the RE-202 sounded really good. Looking forward to hearing it along side the Volante. Great show Leg Ends. Happy May Day and.....Cheers!

The RE-201 is so stylish, I always wanted one. My friend Art Najera has one, and it seems like Joe Satriani had one back when he was playing with The Squares. (All I could really focus on was that he had three (3!) Boss Pedals on the floor, a mind-blowing expense on batteries back in those days.) Anyway, seems that the Space Echo is actually way more artistic than I am. Maybe I will get an RE-2, but I'm going to keep saving up for that Fulltone SSTE.

Great video guys. Love your channel. Finally got my RE-202 and thought I'd just share this. I really wanted to be able to use the reverb by itself, which you can do, but only if you turn the echo volume down MANUALLY. My hope was that when I switch off the delay, the reverb could still be on regardless of echo volume or any other settings. I'm sure there is some sort of hack by using the presets or something but this is disappointing as I always leave reverb on. If anyone has a solid workaround, let me know!

    • @GarryHuta
      @GarryHuta Před 2 lety +1

If you select the Tape delay option, you can turn the parameters knob to change the heads. For example if you see just 1, it's just the one head. If you see 2,3 then it's the 2nd and 3rd heads. 123 will be heads 1, 2 and 3. You can also assign the right or left buttons to the warp or twist function for some crazy oscillation effects via the settings(Tap Division and Preset button). Check out the manual, there's a bunch of crazy things the DD-200 can do.

Yep. In this demo it seemed the “soup” created by the delays in the Re-20 was closer to those in the Re-201. The “fidelity” of all the delays and effects on them with the Re-202 seemed a bit additive and less organic somehow. Great when you’re listening to guitar played in isolation for a demo, but gotta wonder how it would sit in a band mix?

The newer ones sound great. I'm pretty wedded to my Keeley Echoes (not the "Eccoes") for multi-head type tones, but the RE-2 would look tasty next to my Boss delays. The Keeley is a Binson-style unit.
You can never have too many delays :)
At times, the RE-202's repeats seemed a little bit "separate" from the dry signal, if that makes sense. The RE-20 was kinda organic. It's darker, no doubt. Suited to brighter amps & pickups, agree with Mick on this.
I do appreciate the fidelity of the newer pedals.

I am absolutely in love with my RE-20. I agree that the fidelity of the 202 is above and beyond, but I can honestly see a place for both, as I'd imagine the 202 could be used as an outboard effect during mixing.
Having said all that, I think you guys should look into the T-Rex Replicator D´Luxe Tape Echo. While not entirely comparable, I do think it warrants attention as a device somewhat similar in terms of what it does delay-wise.

A couple of days ago I bought a Nux NDD-7 Tape Echo, which emulates the Roland Space Echo. I don't have a point of comparison, but it has a great feature set (I think most of the Roland), easy to use, small well-made unit, nice UI, mono in, stereo out, 1600ms of delay and even has a 40 second looper that can be used at the same time as the Space Echo. So far I'm really enjoying it, and it was less than half the price of El Capistan here in Tokyo. If you guys get a chance to review it I'd love to hear what you think...

This probably does 90% of what you'd look for with the sounds but to me, they all miss the unique characteristics of deterioration and random artifacts and peculiar 'misfirings' that a true tape delay has that makes it, well, unpredictable, but also desirable. The one thing that you can say is the upgrade and big check mark is the reliability and functionality that will probably stay solid for many years to come. I baby my RE-201 and hold my breath every time I turn it on.
