Boss Dm-101 vs RE-202 // What's the difference?

  • Sonically I mean... there are the obvious ones like the RE-202 is a digital emulation of the Space Delay whereas the DM-101 used 8 BBDs for a pure analog signal path.
    The DM-101 has a darker, more gooey tone, with the RE-202 being more precise (surprising to me as its anything but compared to digital delays) and having more tonal control. The tone of the DM-101 however is stunning so I throw in a little demo of it being itself at the end.

    I love the way they designed these. The fact that they’ve started to put some love into the design of pedals again, with a quality feel and clean as hell 1970s aesthetics. Imagine if they started making synths like that, analog synths with original design (but obviously influenced by older designs).

    The DM-101 sounds incredible. I definitely want to add a stereo BBD delay to my collection. The only thing i wish it had is stereo inputs. due to that limitation i would lean more towards the Flower Pedals Dahlia, or the Walrus Audio Meraki, but the DM-101 sounds so darn good. 😁

    If you have the Moog Matriarch, you have access to their built-in BBD based on the Moog 500 series modules which sounds amazing and which I think sounds better than the DM-101. That's stereo too and can be modulated however you want with envelopes and LFOs and other eurorack gear if you have it :-)

      It’s difficult to fit it on a pedal board though 😂😂 … I’ve not got the matriarch although I had one here for a few months. I never realised the BBD on it was so flexible, but much preferred it to the reverb in my GM.

    I tried the 101 and thought it sounded amazing, had the full stereo width that i feel the 202 is lacking. But that mono in is an absolute killer for me. I use pedals as outboard gear and it just kills all my stereo image. And the fact it doesn't go 100% wet means I cant put it in a parallel effect send without causing a weird phasing issue. Such a shame because I think the 101 might be one of the best analog delays I've heard

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Yeah I get that, and have been wondering why myself. I think its due to being fully analog - it would require another 8 BBDs for true stereo. I guess they could split them 4+4 for L+R but then the delay lines would be different.

      @chrisdavies9143 Před 10 měsíci

      @StarskyCarr yes absolutely, I understand too. And I know it's me just being one of the unbearable stereo crowd. The likelihood is the majority of people will use this in mono anyway. It's just a shame really because it sounds amazing and it's a really well engineered pedal, very powerful.

But it wasn't unusable or anything, just noticeably couldn't handle the input as well as some other pedals, Strymon etc.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Před 10 měsíci

      I wonder whether it's because it's using analog circuitry? to have true stereo delay would require double the BBDs. Having said that, even if it summed to mono at input might be more useful for people with stereo routing.

I thought "Oh, cool... he's using a Roland Boutique SH-01A like mine to demo these pedals! Wait, though... what are those plugs on the top side... mine doesn't have those (looking down at my desk to confirm that my SH-01A didn't have its plugs on top, but in back). Hmm... this is ODD... does he have the Roland Boutique sitting on something else that is gray with plugs on it? Hmm... no... it's definitely part of the... OH, WAIT, that's a REAL SH-101!" etc. etc. So, then I sit thinking "Yeah, like Starsky would even have something like a Boutique, of course he's going to have the real thing. I should get the real thing and stop being such a loser." (looking over at my P6, Pro3, Sub37, Grandmother, MS-20, Perkons, and every box Electron makes mounted on my Jaspers stands) Yeah... I'm nothing without a real SH-101. (Looking over at my Behringer Poly D) "Yeah... there's the proof I'm a cheapskate" (ALTHOUGH... to be fair... Starsky IS sort've responsible for me getting that Poly D after his comparison video was so impressive.) Still... it just goes to show you how vicious and predatory G.A.S. is... it preys on every single compromise you ever make and ignores every major sacrifice you've already made to try to appease the monster. The thing is, I'm not a materialistic person in any other way... just... SYNTHS (and drum machines... and sequencers... and pedals...and controllers...) :::sigh::: sick, sick boy I am...

    The DM-101 is more expensive than two DM-2Ws, and I'd rather have two DM-2Ws. An 8 BBD 1.2-sec delay needs SOME kind of filtering. I'm sure it has something hidden in the the settings, but that's really bad design. They had plenty room for EQ or filter knobs, but nope. My favorite big delays are the Zen Delay, Benidub Echo, and the Suhr Discovery. Those all have easy to use LPF/HPF, and it's something I use 100% of the time.
    The DM-101 is a great idea that was poorly executed. There's nothing interesting or elegant or intuitive about the interface. It's a dramatic contrast next to the RE-202 which has a lovely layout/interface. Maybe that's just because it's copying the lovely layout/interface of the OG Space Echo. It's also a real eye-roller that in 2023 they're still repurposing an old chassis with a Micro-B connector. It doesn't really matter. It doesn't need the connector for power. But it just screams "lazy design."

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Před 10 měsíci

      I guess the issue with EQ or filter is that to keep to an all analog signal path it would need 2 analog filters (L+R), not sure how much that would impact the cost.
      I agree on the USB though - an odd choice now it’s pretty much obsolete.
