You are exactly right! It's not that they are in the playoff hunt, but instead it's how they have got here. Collapsing the last quarter of the season does not leave anyone with confidence for this team moving forward.
Yzerman is a great GM .. except when it comes to picking coaches. Blashill and Uncle Fester are good assistant coaches and know the X's and O's- neither of them are good leaders who motivate or inspire anyone or know how to chew out someone who needs it. We need a Craig Berube or Gerard Gallant type who can be an a-hole at times when its needed.
The time for nurturing players is at the lower levels of the game. Lalonde is a nurturing type coach.Just too bland for the NHL .

I agree and that's a very detrimental flaw to have as players age and opportunities thin out. I'm also starting to wonder about his roster building; after 4 drafts and where we've been drafting, we should have more than 2 guys playing w/ the big team (not counting Edvinsson as he only played the last several games). and many of his own contracts/vet player acquisitions have not turned out. Not popular opinions but you have to start asking...
Seems like I rarely agree w/ Cookies but he said every single thing I'm thinking...this "race" will eb won by who stumbles the least. The organization and the Yzerbots don't seem to think that goal posts can be moved...Yzerman was supposed to accelerate the typical rebuild time.

Honestly this teams probably gonna be totally different next season, you got a lot of rentals on this team, that I wouldnt bring back, Kane, Perone, Veleno, Ghost, Fish, Sprong and Reimer, Kane only acceptation if its a cheap 1 to 2 year deal, other then that, im good on the ageing talent thanks, and take Newsy with you
When a project in industry starts to faulter , sometimes you have to make mid-course corrections.Sometimes major corrections.
Irrespective of the players on the ice, Derek Lalonde is just not the guy to get the job done.He is a great guy , but his style isn't conducive to winning at the NHL level.
The Yzerplan may creep ahead, but don't expect major improvements with Lalonde as the coach.

Wings really miss a Holmstrom in your crease tyoe battler. And having Larkin with his skating ability getting beaten to death in front of the net is stupid .
Yzerman needs to start paying for stars. Not paying for depth. Look at the top teams, they are very top heavy and then fill out their roster with depth.
With Kane likely leaving I suspect Yzerman will still think it is premature to go after the kind of players that would repeat this season's unexpected success.

@@Pablo-gl9dj I guess that depends on when. At the trade deadline he thought they would get in but prior to the season he seemed to agree that the Atlantic was too good and that Florida is ahead in the rebuild.
Goaltending is the problem.
When you let in six goals you are not going to win.. when's the last time you seen a Detroit goalie stand on his head and win a game for the wings? Washington's goalie won the game for them the other night..
This team is never gonna win until we start playing the edvinsson’s and kasper’s etc.. this team sucks I don’t know how nobody realizes this . Copp and compher are severly overpaid bottom 6 guys (no idea wtf Yzerman was thinking)
We have to get rid of some deadweight and play the kids . Debrincat like 1 goal in 20 games , he’s had a horrendous season. Deal him and go after a Sam Reinhart and fix that defence

Wings fans are desperate for any warm fuzzy feelings about the team. Setting the bar so low that a couple more wins is considered 12 months of success? Yzerman needs to stop micromanaging the coaching and hire an experienced head coach. Two rookie coaches in a row, failed. Get some objective eyes in the room with zero connection to the Wings. The team is an alum country club from top to bottom. Everyone has a job for life here, regardless of performance. Zero accountability. At this so called rate of progress, it will be 12-15 seasons before they improve more than other teams and be a Cup contender.
Does it suck that they may fall short? Sure but if your not Able to appreciate the growth that this team has done. Then you sound entitled like your owed. That's not how it works. Also I really like how the coach talks about this team.He talks about it truthfully instead of trying to pander to fans.
