Using ESPN rankings of the top 100 players for sake of discussion, Riley Greene is the top Tiger entering the 2024 season and is ranked 81. That is the only top 100 player! Core? There is no core pieces still. The Lions show us core with two all-pro first team individuals and two second team. Additionally, the Lions have 5 in the top 25 list of those 25 and younger. Now, that is what a core looks like.

Scott Harris can’t honestly answer the questions publicly. What do you want him to say? That Baez is only on the team because the owner is too cheap to buy him out? That Tork is a bust and halfway through his year 3 season it’s obvious he’ll never be more than a AAAA player? That his boss is more concerned with his balance sheet than his win loss record? We all know the answers to the questions. If Harris answers honestly it’s career suicide.

Funny thing is, Harris doesn't owe the media anything! Remember the line from Money Ball, "It's a problem you think you have to explain anything!" This is year 2 after inheriting the mess he did from Avila. Harris needs to gut this organization and start over. And that's what he's doing. He wants to build this team via the draft and not overspend on players that end up like Baez. He's stuck with that horrible contract. We also don't have a core of young players that are consistent enough daily to bank on before we spend $$$ on free agents.

You don’t spend money just to spend money, you need the right players at the right price and they have to want to join your team. This is a rebuilding team so it’s not a destination. That means they have to overpay and for who, exactly? That’s just not smart. It’s good to be competitive, but spending money on just anyone doesn’t necessarily do that.

They tried the NFL in Europe in the 90s. It bombed. Sure, people will show up for the odd game as an excuse to get drunk but week-in-and-week-out? Sorry, football is soccer in the rest of the world. Then there is the issue of taxes and players being separated not only from their families but from their country. The suits think these guys are just plug-and-play pieces they can move around and tell what to do but more than a few players are already on record saying they will never play full-time in Europe. As for the Middle East, sure there is money there, and it is owned by a small minority connected to the royal families who run the place. I remember being in that part of the world and I was struck by the amazing highways, eight lanes, perfect condition, and traffic free. That's why they were in such good shape. Only a handful of people could afford a car. And security? In that part of the world? Forget it. You might as well put a "Kick Me" sign on the players back alongside "Free Money Here." Same goes for Europe, where Americans aren't too popular with a whole bunch of the fellas living in those countries. That would be a target rich environment for any terrorist who wants to make a buck or just a simple death to America statement. The NFL is kidding itself if it thinks it can replicate what it has here overseas. But they are arrogant enough to try. It will be interesting to see what kind of pushback they get from the players union. And Australia? Really? Ever travelled there? It is one helluva trip. Jetlag on steroids if you have to turn around in a day or two and play a football game. This is why I am only a Lions fan. I used to follow the rest of the league closely but Goodell is such a weasel-like scumbag and the league is just soulless. I won't give them anything more than minimum attention. Some day something is going to happen, something genuinely tragic and when it does, watch how the little cockroaches in New York scurry for cover.

I think Jack Campbell becomes a major force on the defense. With his length, size and drive he could become the next "Mad Stork"-Ted Hendricks-. It will be interesting to see how the young LB group goes after teams this season with both McNeil and Reader occupying the middle with Hutchison on one edge. We should find out right off the bat in 2024.

I think if Glenn is able to get creative the defensive backfield could be the story of the year for 2024. There is a lot of talk about the rookies, and rightfully so, but I have a feeling the Robertson kid they signed as a FA could be a difference maker. He's able to play man and he's got experience playing nickel. That will allow Glenn to move Branch around as a bit of a swiss army knife. And Iffy. I gotta say, no player surprised me more than Iffy. I didn't discount him, I just sort of forgot about him. If Mosely can bounce back and Jack Campbell can figure out to cover TE's, this defense could be elite. At the end of the day, I still think when the Lions do win it all people will point back to the top of the 2023 draft and say those were the guys who closed the deal. It will be tough, damn near impossible, for this years class to top what those guys did, but competition is a great thing and if anyone can ramp guys up and throw down the challenge flag it's Coach Campbell. This is fun. I love having a great football team to root for after so many years of rooting for crap. NFC Championship? I say Super Bowl. If not now, when. They have the horses and man, wouldn't it be special to knock off a team like the Chiefs, a team I liked initially but one that has gotten on my last nerve. Just go win it all guys.
